Raised by Wolves #3

Taken by Storm

Rate this book
In the eye of a storm stands Bryn, the alpha of the Cedar Ridge werewolf pack. She is young. Female. Human. Physically weaker than any werewolf, she could never survive a battle with another alpha, the strongest, fiercest, and canniest of his pack.

Yet she cannot refuse a summons from the werewolf Senate. A rogue werewolf is attacking humans. The risk of exposure threatens to destroy pack life, and the center of the crisis is Cedar Ridge territory—her own lands.

Bryn has no choice but to attend the meeting, a gathering of the most powerful werewolves on the continent.  The subject is the rogue wolf, but Bryn knows the other packs want what she has. Her territory. Her females. Her pack.

They want her death.

Werewolf law prevents the other alphas from making a direct attack. It also prevents her former alpha, the mysterious and powerful Callum, from coming to her aid. But it doesn’t prevent Bryn from knowing what she wants. To keep her lands. To protect her pack.

To survive.

Ahh! The cover has been revealed!

AND IT IS GORGEOUS.

The first is still my favorite, but this cover is so much better than the second.

After I Finished

What.

WHAT.

WHAT THE FUCK.

WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED.

Excuse me, I'm having an emotional breakdown.

description

description

Seriously, Jennifer, WHAT THE FUCK.

description

I can't believe it. I can't even write a review of this book because my emotions are colliding in a chemical reaction of rage, anger, sadness and depression.

description

I loved the first book in this series. I really did. I shipped the main character and her love interest.
The second book, I liked. It was okay, but not great.
For about 80% of the third book (this one) I was really enjoying it.

But then. Shit happened.

Seriously.

THE WHOLE FIRST BOOK IS COMPLETELY POINTLESS NOW BECAUSE OF THE ONE CHARACTER THAT DIED. HOW CAN AN AUTHOR DO THAT?!

description

I won't say it. It's too much. If you want to read this series, then most definitely read the first one and the second. But do not read the third, unless you enjoy having your heart ripped out for no fucking reason. And don't click the spoiler thingy if you haven't read this book.

This is character assassination.

CHARACTER ASSASSINATION, I TELL YOU.

Q: Every future I can find is coated in blood. (c)
Q:… a quiet Bryn meant Trouble with a capital T. (c) I'm pretty sure that by this point it's clear that Bryn of any description is Trouble with a capital T.

Bryn:
Q:
Bronwyn Alessia St. Vincent Clare didn’t get sad. She got mad. Or better, she got even. (c)

Chase is being as touchy-feely-understanding lovey-dovey as ever:
Q:
He wasn’t pushing, wasn’t asking me to change, but I knew he wanted me to have choices that I would never have. (c)

Callum doing Callumthenics in Callumese. The old wolf. Looking 'unassuming and unaware' right until he isn't.

Devon is a hoot!
Q:
WELCOME TO NORTH DAKOTA! The sign in front of me declared cheerfully. DISCOVER THE SPIRIT!
I glanced over at Devon. He held his hands artistically to the side and wiggled his fingers.
Jazz hands? I asked silently.
No, he corrected, jerking his head toward the sign. Spirit fingers.(c)

Caroline is a piece of work! Just look at this scene:
Q:
Caroline … had a gun in one hand and a crossbow in the other.
The gun was trained on Sora’s temple, the crossbow on Callum’s thigh.
“Caroline,” I said, my voice dangerously pleasant. “Do you mind?”
“No,” Caroline said, releasing the safety. “I don’t.”
“Caro, darling, as much of a Kodak moment as this absolutely is, pointing weapons at werewolves isn’t something one does at close range.” (c)

Not much else I can say without spoilering something dreadful. And, AND, A N D this book is actually quite unexpectedly developing on many lines, so I think not everyone would love that. (Yes, I LOVE getting spoilers - they never spoil anything, just improve all and everything. Sadly, not everyone agrees with my impeccable logic. And I won't argue this point as it is a question of personal preferences.)

So, the book is amazing. Much too good for the genre.

The only bad thing is the cliffy (seriously? The craggity-crap, how can this be the last book of the trilogy?). But yep. This is the last book of it. Did I say the cliffy is bad? Nah, I'm wrong about it. It is amazing. Just like the rest of it all.

I'm not happy with some plot developments. Dreadfully unhappy. Color me a banshee right now and you won't be wrong. I love my happy endings and… Too bad I don't grade books on how I like or don't like the plot. (Won't go further down that lane - no spoilers in this review!) But the book - it's going to be my new insta-shocking-fav. This is one of those rare cases when the book #3 is not weaker than the book #1.

Q:
“Three questions… One: do you have a car? Two: do you have plans tonight? And three: how fast can you drive?” (c)
Q:
In a way, I’d been building rooms just like this one in my mind my entire life… (c)

SPOILERS

Oh. My. God.

I give Taken by Storm 4.5 stars on account of the the structure, the writing and the words and phrases used.

But for the actual story itself? The conclusion? The last 42 pages?

ONE STAR! AT MOST!

Are you kidding me Jennifer? Did you really just ruin this series for me?!?

Not only did you kill Chase, Bryn's one true love and mate, but throughout the book their was barely any mention of him! He spoke at the maximum of ten times with the maximum of two god damn words! Then you took Devon away and put him in a different pack! Callum acted like a total ass! We didn't even get to experience more than one conversation with Ali! And now Bryn is alone and sad and broken and completely messed up.

I'm praying that Chase magically somehow comes back as a Shadow and lives forever with Bryn in the Cedar Ridge Pack.

So, make it happen Jennifer.

EDIT:

Hold up!

I just read on Jennifer Lynn Barnes website that this is the last book in the 'trilogy'! Are you kidding me. I'm actually crying. I know she said that it's possible she would return to the world of Raised by Wolves and write about Bryn's life after, but seriously?

And now that I've had time to absorb that crazy ending I'm slowly coming to terms with Jennifer's reasoning with it. Yes, Bryn has reached her coming of age and found her place amongst the world of the werewolves but it just isn't right, she can't be left alone without her mate, without her best friend. This makes me unbelievably sad.

*Cries for the rest of eternity*

Please, please, please, please return to Bryn's world and write another trilogy.

EDIT:

It's been two years and I am still incredibly angry and sad about how this trilogy ended. I'm also still waiting for that follow-up book.

I'm dying to read this book! My number 1 favorite werewolves-YA!!!

**Spoilers Alert**

I've finished reading this book since last week. It took me that long to pull myself together to review it.

I couldn't believe the author did this. I had a hunch that something bad might happen when Callum saw Chase approached then turned back to Bryn and said he was sorry for things that might or might not happen. I told myself that this was YA, in YA the main male character won't get killed. Apparently I was wrong.

I had mixed emotions. I was so confused. Part of me thought that the plot was well written. A big part of me hated that Chase had to die. It was brilliant the way Bryn easily took Shay's territory and Devon had a chace to attack and kill Shay when he attacked Bryn. I was glad Devon had become the alpha of Snake Bend Pack but I hated that he had to leave. Ugh!

I gave this book 2.5 stars with hope there will be a sequel.

Is there going to be another book to this series? Because this checked firmly into Heartbreak Hotel and I'm going to be very sad if that's what we're ending on. :( Fantastic book but geez. You want to stomp all over Bryn some more Barnes? Sure you don't need one last kick in? 4 stars

I really liked this book. I read it in one day. I couldn't stop. It was great, really. So much unexpected happened. Things I would never have dreamed of happening.
So, why did I give the book one star?
It's simple. From five stars, the book sank to one because of one event. One thing. Chase died.
I cried like a baby through the last three chapters. It's not fair. It's not how it's supposed to be. I'm a sucker for happy endings. I know this wasn't the typical love story, but still. It's not how it was supposed to be. The author has some balls to do something like that in a book. I'm sad, and I'm really pissed off.
So yeah, I liked this book, but I give it one star because the main boy character died.

Loved the book, nearly everything about it. The one thing I didn't like has caused me to only rate it with one star.
Chase dies... Seriously? What the actual hell?

I will still read the next one (if there is a next one) since I've loved this series for so long, purely in the hopes that somehow, some way, Chase will come back. If he does come back (as a ghost or whatever..) then I shall change my review of this book (maybe) but until then I am thoroughly angry with this book and the author for even putting me through that emotional trauma.

The next book better be released pretty darn soon and have Chase back in it too or I may just give up on this series all together.

EDIT***

Okay, so I've just seen that Barnes has no plans to continue this series, even though it wasn't, in my opinion, even completed! I may not be an author myself but I don't think someone is a true author if they just leave a series like that, killing off main characters and not even really finishing the story. You wait the whole time for Bryn to become a werewolf and just as she does, no more series, seriously?
This has gone from being my favourite series to my least, and so has the author.
You don't just leave a series like that, as if you've gotten bored. Do you not even think about your fans?
I will definitely not be suggesting this author's work to others any more, if anything, I'll be doing the opposite.
I'm very passionate about my books and I think authors should be too, obviously. But I just feel as if Barnes isn't as passionate as she should be, after just ditching this brilliant series.

This book is incredibly epic. Suspenseful. Rife with mystery and pack politics and all those good things we’ve come to know and love from the first two books.
DON’T READ THIS BOOK.
Seriously. I wish I hadn’t read his book. In a couple days, or weeks, or months, after I’ve had time to cool down and get over the ending, I’ll understand why it happened and that, yes everything that happened made sense and had to happen and blah-di-blah-di-blah.
But I will never, ever forgive this ending.

****This review will completely spoil the book for you. So don't read it if you even think you might read the book*****

Ok let me start off by saying WHAT THE FUCK!! I mean what is this?! Barnes, could you possibly put your character through more! I feel like the end of the book stops the depression stage, abruptly and without hope. She lost her boyfriend and her best friend. She didnt really win anything except revenge. I was expecting something more meaningful to happen than achieving peace. Bryn doesnt really grow enough in this book for it to be the last. All she really discovers about life is that it sucks.

Ok enough of my ranting, bascially shay calls a senent meeting because there is another rabid, a female rabid. Bryn thinks it might be Maddy so its a race for them to find Maddy before the other alphas(shay) do. Bryn is still pretty broken up about having to kill lucas. So she is going through that moral delama. Then they find Maddy and there are all kinds of little twists and plot turns until Bryn goes up against shay in the final battle. Then shit gets real, not in a good way.

I seriously wanted to throw this book across the room when I was done with it. It really disapointed me. I thought it was a good book in the sense that I could easily connect with the characters. But what happened to them pissed me off. I think I wouldn't be quite so mad if instead of Devon becoming alpha of the other pack, Bryn took it all and became the leader of the biggest pack in north america with Devon still as her second, supporting her. That way she would have been left with something instead of ending up pretty much where she was at the begining of the book minus one mate and one best friend.

Full review to come in June (hopefully)

All I have to say is this better not be the last book. That ending is great for a cliff hanger-ish type but not for an ending of a series.

***UPDATE 6/10/12*** I talked with someone from Egmont while at BEA about this series and she did say this was the final book. I did mention how disappointed I was to hear this was the final book. So, with that being said...my rating is going down from a 5 star...

Oh my freaking goodness SERIOUSLY WHYYY! of all people to kill of why him as quiet and slightly mysterious his character was (not going to say who dont want to spoil it for people who havent read it) i thoroughly enjoyed him and bryns scenes together and how protective he was of her and how he loved her so simply and how no matter what put her first (ok pretty of obvious who im talking about right?? im just soo suprised and gutted though i do respect that though there were alot of scenes were the main character bryn could have become swallowed in all her pressure and everyone getting killed around her i do appreciate the author not making bryn a melodramatic depressed drama queen but instead accepting the wrong and trying to do something about it instead of just crying all day like etc.. lets just say a loved one of hers dying and trust me ive read lots of book were the protagonist just sits there pondering how her life sucks and she doesent deserve this while bryn sucks it up and practically says fuck it im not going to sit here but im going to do something.
Though there were many ups in this novel what seemed to bother me was how they were high up on hey your mine no your mine which obviously your going to get a lot of since this is a novel about werewolves and werewolves do tend to be quite possesive which i understand but hearing it all the time just bothers me because if i was in a type of situation like that i wouldnt want someone always trying to claim me like that though bryn did give them free will and didnt force anything on them she did slightly get a bit possesive in what i percieved from reading the raised by wolves books above from all this the novels were highly interesting and kept me wanting to read more and more which is a very good thing though the ending for me was quiet blatanly obvious i mean c'mon you all must have seen it coming though this for me made it all the more captivating leaving me biting my nails anxiously waiting/hoping for the next book.

Oh My…GOD. Where to start with this review, as most know I have been in love with this series from the first book, I loved Bryn’s feisty attitude and Devon’s personality, and of course how could I not mention Lake, she may not be physically strong in comparison to the other werewolves but she is fast and loves her guns. Jennifer Lynn Barnes has out done herself in this book.

In Taken by Storm, the setting takes place a few months after Lucas challenges Bryn. Bryn is called to a council meeting where she is faced with a terrible realization that a rabid is on the lose, and in her mind realizes the possibility that this rabid maybe someone she is all too familiar with. We see Bryn working along side Jed, Caroline, Lake and Chase, quite the group wouldn’t you say? Especially since in the last book Caroline was trying to kill them, of course things have changed since then. Here we see her more independent and in charge as ever (like she isn’t already most of you might be saying), I loved it, though I have to say it was sad not to see much of Ali or Devon through the chapters, but the journey that Bryn and her friends were in for kept me locked into the pages. There was so much going on, each chapter never gave me a chance to take a break, I had to read on…..I needed more!

I loved the story plot, though at first I swore I had figured out what was going to happen, but of course it was all a trick, with a different plot hidden just beneath the surface! I was proven very wrong! As I read through the chapters what I had originally thought to be the plot was not, though some things I was able to guess from certain hints throughout the book. Take by Storm was put together in a way that captivates you from beginning until the very end.

This book will have you in suspense, it will have you smiling, laughing, astounded, sad and just overall enthralled by the overall experience of it all. And may I say, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, how dare you give me such a cliffhanger at the end! I need to know what happens next for Bryn, and what is Ali going to say! * yells “Noooooo it can’t just end like that!” for dramatic effect* I do hope Jennifer Lynn Barnes does return with another book in the Raise by Wolves series. 5 out of 5 bats!

Not so much a review as a quick commentary. This final (from what I understand) book in the trilogy is the best of them and I enjoyed (and have re-read) the first two. I'm having a hard time putting into words why this series has stuck with me but it definitely has. The story arc is good but there is something about the writing that makes me think very hard about all the other YA books I've read and what the reader takes away from them, consciously or subconsciously. The ending? Yeah, I was soooo not expecting that but from book one I could tell that this wasn't going to be your usual "girl meets boy then meets another boy, love triangle ensues, girl gets super powers and kicks butt, off into the sunset they go" kind of of story. When it came down to Bryn and some hard choices being made, they were, and I have a lot of respect for an author who's willing to stay true to their characters and stick the landing on a finish that felt realistic.

I see some of the reviewers have given this one a low rating because of how the book ends, but I really didn't mind it.
I still loved the story.
I would love to read more about what happens next, but it doesn't look like any other books are in the works (yet?). Since this is the only series Barnes has written that I really enjoyed, I hope she continues it.
If not, it was good trilogy.

Love the characters and the first two books were great...
Particularly towards the ending...this book felt rushed/condensed..making sure things that had been hinted/spoken about came to fruition.
Despite saying that I would love to read more about these characters.

First and foremost, a very important issue needs to be addressed. For those of you, like me, who are wondering if there is going to be a fourth book in the Raised by Wolves series, here is what Barnes has to say: “I knew that this book would, in many ways, be a conclusion to the plot lines, questions, and character arcs that started in the first two. I can’t say for sure that this is the last book I’ll ever write about Bryn, but I can say that I would be happy with it as a finale if it were.” *pauses and broods over statement* *broods some more* Nope, I’m sorry. Try as I might, I am not content with this ending. I want more! I want to know what happens next (MAJOR spoilers- do not open unless you have read the book): While the plot lines may have been tied up nicely, I am still not wholly satisfied with this ending (a series should not end on a cliffhanger, in my opinion), so I will praying, down on my hands and feet pleading, for there to be a fourth book. Please? Please, please, pretty please?? I am not above begging.

description
You cannot resist this face!

[Tries to gather what little of my dignity remains] Ahem. Okay, I am cool and composed. So how was the book, you ask? Absolutely, mind-blowingly amazing!! Just when I thought this series could not impress me more, Barnes dishes out Taken by Storm. This is definitely one of the few series available that actually gets better and better with every addition, and Taken by Storm is the best book in the series, no contest. It defied all my expectations, which were already pretty high. The story starts a little while after Bryn met with Callum (end of book two), and things immediately get intense when a Rabid shows up and Bryn is confronted with memories she would rather not remember. However, this Rabid is believed to be female, and all the big boys (aka the Alphas) come out to play in hopes of adding her to their ranks. When Bryn learns that Maddy might somehow be involved in the Rabid’s killings, it becomes a race against time and the other Alphas to figure out who the Rabid is and save Maddy. If things are not bad enough, Shay starts pulling out some of the tricks he has up his sleeve for some time, and he is anticipating the day when he takes over Bryn’s pack. But Bryn happens to have a few tricks up her sleeve as well….

I know I already mentioned that I loved this book, but it will not hurt to say it one more time. Taken by Storm was beyond brilliant. Barnes seamlessly creates a story with a gripping, ever-changing plot filled with intense action, charming characters, and heightened emotions/feelings, a prefect trifecta. This book made me feel so much; I laughed and I cried and some emotionally trying moments tugged at my heart. I love how Barnes captures the mentality of a pack being family, and I respected the strength of their emotional bonds to one another. Bryn is human, but she is their Alpha, and they will follow her through thick and thin. I cannot even begin to try and explain the appreciation I have for Bryn. Being human, she is physically weaker than other packs’ Omegas, but that never stops her from doing what she thinks is best and fighting for her pack. Shay throws her down rather heavily in this book, but she stands up and pushes right back, and I cannot help but have the utmost respect for her. Her iron will and keen mind are all the arsenal she needs to make the other Alphas regret challenging her or thinking of her as weak. You have got to love a girl who can own Alpha males. All the old favorites are also back, and even good ole Archer makes an appearance (I lovveee his name!).

I really cannot do this book justice. If you have not read it (or this series), then you need to remedy that quickly. Raised by Wolves is one of the greatest werewolf books I have ever come across (if not the very best), and you should not miss out on it. Treat yourself! I just hope Taken by Storm is not the last time we read about Bryn.

To conclude my fangirling review, I have a letter for Ms. Barnes.

Dear Ms. Barnes,
I [politely] demand a fourth book. You do not want to see me go all Rabid (it's not pretty). I will eagerly be awaiting the next book within a year! :)
Thank you,
A BIG fan

I wasn´t expecting much of the book, but it surprised me. Out of the 3 books, I think this one is the best in the series so far.

Everything starts when Shay calls a Senate meeting because there´s a new Rabid on the loose, but what really matters is that the Rabid is a female. So of course everyone asks Bryn if any of her females are missing and that where everything gets tricky...

Bryn accepted Maddie leaving at the end of book 2, and she fears she may be the Rabid. She´s set on finding her in the hopes of saving her from herself and the other Alphas since they settled in the meeting that whoever finds the Rabid gets to keep her.

I look forward towards book 4 :)

Heartbreakingly sad and incredibly angsty, this could not have been any more different from the first two books. The storyline was more complex. It was more serious and deep and it really demonstrated how much Bryn had developed to become the person she is now. I really appreciate the author's ability to actually do that; however I did not appreciate her killing off one of my favorite characters (even though it fits and is deeply moving). That was just cruelty. Other than that, it was just amazing.

I love the cover, but her hair looks really dry even though it's supposedly pouring rain on the cover. Maybe I'm being too technical.

This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking about a change and I wrote a small chapter on the unconscious part of her changing (if it happens). It goes like this:
spoiler ahead!!
(view spoiler)

I woke up by Dead Man's Creek again. This was becoming unconscious routine, I thought, looking around.
Why am I here?
I couldn't remember being knocked out.
Why am I knocked out? Oh lord, I might be missing something!
I started worrying. What was going on while I was unconscious? I reached out to Chase desperatly, hoping that he would tell me exactly what was going on. I couldn't reach out. Something was blocking me.
Panic flooded my thoughts. My heart beat raced. And adrenaline coursed through my veins. I got jittery. I quickly got my panic under control though, calming down slowly but steadily. I stopped to think.
Maybe Chase wants some private time.
Maybe I'm knocked out 'cause I was training way too hard or something.
Yeah right.
I don't know how though, but very soon my heartbeat was back to normal, and I was as calm as I could get.
That's when I realized wolves were howling. Faint, but getting louder by the second. I went towards the woods on the edge of the creek.
And that's when a saw the circle of wolves surrounding the area. The circle was positioned so that there was two rings, the she-wolves in the front, the males in the back. They were completely surrounding the creek and the clearing beside it where I was.
I stared at each one of them wondering if this was a dream, a nightmare, or some kind of illusion. When usually am unconsious, nothing happens. And this isn't nothing.
All the more reason to worry.
But I kept the worry to a minimum as I watched them. A she-wolf padded out of her place in line and came to my side. The gap that she left was filled quickly.
I looked down at the wolf. "Dog is Man's best friend. But I guess that a wolf is also the ancester of a dog, so wolves count, too."
Raw amusement glittered in the wolf's chocolate eyes. She followed me back to my seat by the creek.
I looked at the wolf for a while. She was a good-looking one, I had to admit. She was almost fully black, and where she was black, it was jet black. But on the ends of every piece of fur was brown, then gold. She was big, had broud shoulders, but the rest of her was sleek, like a panther. But her coat looked like silk in the broad daylight. Despite her lankyness, she had an aura of power that I could feel from twenty yards away.
After a while, though, I got bored.
"Do ya like to swim?" I asked, kind of of-mindedly to the wolf. The wolf, of course, didn't answer. "Well, if you don't like it, then stay here, 'cause I'm goin' for a swim." I said mockingly, not expecting an answer. The wolf stared at me like you-have-got-to-be-kidding-me, but climbed into the water with me when I went in.
The water was cool, refreshing and washed my worries away. The water was clear, and my thrashing arms barely left a ripple on it's surface, telling me how small I was compared to it.
Just like my impact on the world.
Minor.
Tiny.
Unnoticable.
But it's perfectly fine with me.
I don't need the world to notice me.
I'm fine the way I am.
I'm fine with just Bryn.
The wolf also looked serene, her shifting paws keeping her up with an ease I didn't have.
I sighed. Then I tooked a deep breath and went under. It was nice when I was unconsious. I could see the bottom and the fish crystal clear. I could dive deep and touch the bottom, 8 feet down (it was a deep creek). I feel like I can do anything under here. Of course, it stops when I run out of air.
I got out.
That how the rest of the day went till sunset. The day was spent sitting, petting Wolfina, and swimming. Don't forget the cat naps.
But at sunset it changed. I was sitting back against a (really) crooked boulder, and was watching the western horizon. Wolfina came up to me and sat by my side, staring at the sunset, too. The other wolves, still in the woods, began howling louder, like they were about to run.
Wolfina didn't suit the she-wolf at all I thought, the setting pink-orange rays of the sun, creating a magnificent aura around the wolf. She was magestic, alright. Then I decided not to name her. No name in the world could describe her, so it was better not to give her a stupid name she would always surpass. I pulled my hand of the ground to pet her. I stroked her fur softly.
But I couldn't pull my hand away. My hand was stuck to her fur like there was super-glue on my hand. She seemed to become transparent.
I was shocked. But what shocked me more was the change of scenery. The world seemed to flicker, and then all of a sudden I wasn't by Dead Man's Creek anymore.
The ground under my feet was mossy, and when around I realize I'm in a really, really big cylinder. It's about 20 ft across, and 60 ft high. Do the math. 18,840 sq ft. Impossible to climb.
But that wasn't it. The sky overhead was dark and cloudy. It started raining.
Big, fat drops of blood.
Now it became truely scary. But to keep myself under control I started thinking about how ridiculous this was.
Well, this adds a new meaning to 'It's raining, it's pouring'.
Apparantly, it wasn't the right thing to think 'cause I started recognizing all the people who's blood was falling onto my face. Now it was pure terror. Chase... and Ali... and Devon... and Lake... and Maddy... all of my pack's blood was raining down on me. And too many other people I didn't know.
And that's when I realized it was flooding, fast. My neck, above my head.I started thrashing, then I swam up. Terror and adrenaline isn't a great mix. But it was an ocean inside of me.
I am Bryn.
I will survive.
Will I survive?
Survive I will.
I am Bryn.
I will survive.
Will I survive?
Survive I will.
I kept up my chant in my mind. I came into a back floating position and closed my eyes.
I will survive.
I will survive.
I will survive.
I will survive.
I will survive.
I will survive.
I opened my eyes. The clouds were still there. But it wasn't raining anymore. Blood had filled up the pit so fast. I was floating at the top of it. Land was 10 feet from me.
I can swim that far.
I started to swim toward land. But the blood is thick and impossible to swim through.
My mind snapped. A rush of red came through. My thoughts were set on one thing.
I am Bryn.
Survive. Survive.
SURVIVE.
I felt if my life depended on the few words. There was nothing else in the world but to...
SURVIVE!
I started paddling with a force I never knew I had. And I started making progress. A foot, a yard, 2 yards. And through the red haze, like a whisper, my arms told me it's tiredness. But the red shunned it immediatly.
My only goal was land. Almost there.
A crawled up on to the bleak land.
I can wake up.
The red faze was clearing away.
I knew it for sure.
I can wake up.
I wasn't trapped here.
How?????????
Suddenly the answer came to me, crystal clear. I looked up, and there it was.
The purest.
Silver-blue.
I'd ever seen.

Like it. I got a bit too jittery so I wrote it. But seriously, the book is going to be so much more awesome than a measly fan-made chapter!!

Let me start off by saying that this has to be one of the best werewolf series that I've read. Barnes has an amazing talent when it comes to getting inside the characters' head and portraying every emotion where it resonates with the reader.

I can’t tell you how much I love strong heroines and Brynn is one of my favorites. This girl has been through it all. She handles everything that comes her way like the alpha that she is. In Brynn’s case, that doesn’t always mean that her decisions don’t have consequences. There were some major events in this book and let me tell you that on two occasions I balled my eyes off. I never saw it coming!

I would recommend this series to anyone whether you love weres/shape shifters or not. This series is ranked at the top of my list along with the best of the best. If you haven’t started this series, why wait? This is the perfect time to jump on board and enjoy a series that’s filled with a great cast of characters and some unbelievable action. You won’t be disappointed!

Although I cried my eyes out when Chase died, I was as devastated when Devon left to be in charge of his brother's pack. And very stunned, yet not surprised, with the ending. I cannot believe I've EVER read a book where the main female protagonist underwent losing the character whom she loves. And I was simply bothered by how Callum went out of all of this completely unscathed. I seriously wish there was another book, because she finally got her wish of becoming a werewolf...

This ending took everything that was great about the first one and threw it down a 1,000 story window. I'd been hoarding this book series for 10 years, wanting to eventually read the entire seriies and I finally did. I loved the first book, but this hurt me on a different level. I wish I could go back in time and stop myself.

4 stars!

Sooooo I always complain about books because the main characters is SOOOO happy and AMAZING and everything is ROSY. But when it isn't rosy and happy, I'm also complain. Except it's more complain because I'm sad, but it fits. Because life is NOT ROSY all the time.

SPOILER

Okay. WHY DID CHASE DIEE!??!!?!???!? And now DEVON???? Is the ALPHA? SOOOOOoOOo Bryn has nobody? At all? She is just lonely? Stupid rules too, a wolf for a wolf huh? Well I don't blame Caroline though, I guess she didn't mean to kill them? Or if Bryn would just say, oh they aren't my pack. So then CHASE and JED wouldn't have had to die!!! But at least Shay died hehe YAY!

Also the ending was kinda strange, but I think she basically just had Callum Change her into a werewolf. Which HELLOO COULDN'T YOU HAVE DONE THAT EARLIER?!?!?!? And you know, all the Chase dying thing could have been prevented.

The way the beat Shay was interesting, but I guess Shay was pretty stupid on his hand too. Why bring his whole pack??? But I guess now Devon is the alpha of Stone River Pack, the senate will sway. BUT I want to see another book after she turned into a Were. It would be cool. Anyway yaaa beyeyey

I can't believe she did that. I can't believe she went there, but Jennifer Lynn Barnes went there and then some. I turned into a crying, snotty mess reading this book. There's a reason this is my second favorite shifter series and Barnes proved that so much while I was reading this book.

I don't even want to say too much because there's just too much that is too easy to spoil. Besides, just thinking about it makes me start crying again.

All I can say is, that the book picks up a few months after where Trial By Fire left off. At first, there's no trouble, but then that douchebag Shay (and no matter how much of a douche he is and how much I despise him, he's still a favorite villain. He was consistent.) calls a meeting of the Senate. While there, Bryn discovers there's a rabid killing humans around the No Man's Land of various territories. Shay tells them that this rabid is a female. Of course, all the male wolves, save Callum, want to go find this female and force her into joining their pack. This of course fills Bryn with dread, because the only female this can be is Maddy, who she allowed to leave her pack because of the crap that went down with Lucas. Bryn and Callum come up with the theory that they need to find Maddy first, so Bryn, Chase, Lake, Caroline and Jed set out to find her.

So very many things are revealed. Some incredibly shocking things. Barnes surprised me over and over again. And just when Bryn was resigned to having to do yet another horrible thing and sacrificing more of her humanity, she gets a break. The problem with the rabid is solved in a way no one expected to be possible. Too bad something even worse happened after that. That's when I started with the waterworks and pretty still haven't stopped. I have a feeling that I will tear up any time I think about this book.

Callum told Bryn before the hunt for Maddy that she would have to be human for this, but of course, he never told her what "this" was. And now, she can never forgive him. I know he kept it from her to keep her alive, but it's still so awful. I love Callum and I always will despite his manipulations. I know he loves Bryn, but she keeps getting her heart broken and I feel so terrible for her every single time. This was almost too much.

I suppose her Change was always meant to happen this way and this is why he kept her waiting, but I have to wonder what it cost him. He knows she feels nothing for him anymore. He was practically her father. He has to be hurting. Man, what I wouldn't do for Jennifer Lynn Barnes to write something from Callum's POV.

It is going to suuuuuuuucccccccccckkkkkkkkkk waiting for the fourth book. Seriously, I'm so anxious for it already. Honestly, I love this series, but it breaks my heart. I stayed up until 5am to finish reading the book and writing my review. The series is just so addictive and really good. But Jennifer Lynn Barnes, you are killing me.
