“Helen Keller: Courageous Advocate” (Graphic Library) by Scott Welvaert

Handy introduction to the story of a phenomenal person.

“Before me I saw a new world opening in beauty and light, and I felt within me the ability to know all things.” - H.K. (p22), quote from 'The Story of My Life' (1903)

Anne and Helen began to make money selling books and articles. When that stopped producing income they went on lecture tours. “After a few years, people began to lose interest in the lectures. Anne and 38-year-old Helen decided to perform live shows ...” (p25)

Written in a graphic-novel format, this quick life-story of Hellen Keller should appeal to young readers who are interested in or are being introduced to biographies. Helen (1880 -1968), a blind and deaf girl, is taught by Anne Sullivan, and the two women grow together over the next 48 years. Helen learns to read and write Braille. She authors a dozen books and graduates from Radcliff College (the first deaf and blind person to attend a university).

i decided to read this book because I always have been wondering who Helen Keller was. I only knew she was famous woman back in the days.

I put this book in 'A graphic novel'. This book is a graphic novel, story of helen kellers life. this book starts off with 5 years old Helen's life. Helen was deaf and blind, to 5 years old child it had been very awful and stressful. but she had gone through her though times even she was in worst condition (being blind and deaf) people ever could have. I found very interesting on the part how Helen Keller was deaf and blind. I had some kind of prejudice that all famous people back in the days, became famous by inventing or discovering something. but my prejusidice have been broken by reading this book. My favourite quote was "The public must learn that blind people are neither geniuses nor freaks. They have minds that can learn and hands which can be trained. it is the duty of the public to help them make the best of themselves so that they can win light through work." I liked this quote because It sounds so meaning full and public often think that people with some problems are freaks. and also i learned something from this quote. that I will treat people equally even they are diffrent from others. My favourite charater is actually Helen's teacher,Anne even Helen couldn't hear nor see her Anne tried her best to make helen to fit in the social.

This graphic novel tells about the life of Helen Keller and the numerous obstacles she overcame to not only pursue higher education, but also to support others' rights to do so as well. It's a good entry in Graphic Library's Graphic Biographies series.

The story itself is short and does not have a great amount of detail, but the additional information provided in the back of the book about Helen's life gives readers resources to learn more. It's a decent way to bring history alive and make it more interesting for young readers.

The narrative is very conversational and provides a fictionalized account of the dialogue between the individuals in the story, and is also sprinkled with direct quotations from primary sources. Overall, it's an inspirational tale and shows how one woman's persistence and determination helped her to succeed when many thought her disabilities would be too great of a barrier.

The illustrations are colorful and cartoonish, and seem to represent that period in American history well.

A very short writing with an overview of Helen's life. Just enough to make me look up other books about her to read in the future including her own
