I give this book 3.5 because of its unfulfilling ending.

Bret works for his uncle in Boston. Although family, his uncle and others in his family refuse to acknowledge him as an equal. When his mother died his uncle refused to take him in, resulting in Bret living on the street for several years before being saved by a loving woman.

Bret is now in Boston trying to prove himself worthy of being part of the family but things are not going as planned.

He's sent to Texas (where he lived with his adopted family) to bring back the daughter of his uncle's partner to get control of her stock in their company. His uncle's aim is to marry her to his useless cousin.

Emily has no intention of leaving Texas and going to Boston. Although her father is dying, she's determined to find a way to hold on to her ranch. As she gets to know Bret, who is an awesome hero, she starts to fall in love with him. Bret, naturally, starts to feel the same way but his irritating obsession with his Boston family stands in the way of them getting together.

I enjoyed this book, although I found Bret's determination to integrate himself into his rich but horrid family irritating. And I would have liked a chapter telling what happened when he went back to Boston in the end to tie up loose ends. The book felt unfinished without it.

Why are all these books OUT OF ORDER?! The Virgo in me cannot abide! This is more of a middle-of-the-road read. I liked Bret as an adult; I lowkey liked Bret as a kid. He was solid, even if he was a lil bit of an unlikeable brat. (The other siblings did him dirty by never talking about him, and I was surprised Zeke and Hawk showed up to aid him.) I liked Emily. I liked Jinx. But the book is weak in plot. Bret's whininess about his Boston family was eye-roll-inducing. Emily is 19; Bret is 27. I know I like Bret more than Chet, do I like it more than the initial book (Jake)? Probably not.

As of now, my rankings are:

1. Matt
2. Pete
3. Sean
4. Buck
5. Jake
6. Bret
7. Chet
8. Ward
9. Drew
10. Zeke / Hawk
11. Luke

This is an expected romance. The lady is a rancher in Texas. The guy grew up in Texas but moved to Boston to be a clerk. Her meets her -- they fall in love -- she doesn't want to go to Boston -- he does but then he returns to Texas forever to marry her.
