The Other Realm #6

Betrayal of the Court

Rate this book
Death. Theft. Marriage. It’s an average day in the Other Realm.

Someone keeps bludgeoning people in the Other realm to death. A couple of the murders were virtually in our back garden, so Emory has asked me to try and find the culprit. I’d feel better if I didn’t have Shirdal along with me, cracking jokes and on the verge of a deadly killing spree of his own. Plus, there’s the small matter of the missing multi-million pound Eye of Ebrell that I still need to locate.

Having overcome the damned challenges, you’d think I’d be welcomed by the dragons with open arms – but no … the court is still full of intrigue and hostility. A few weeks ago we flew to Lucy’s rescue and made some questionable decisions. Now it’s time for the consequences. The Elders are visiting Emory’s court and they’re here to decide Emory’s fate – and by extension, mine.

At this rate, I’m not sure we’ll survive long enough to get our big white wedding. Damn it, I was really looking forward to the cake.

Written in British English. For the maximal reader experience, it is recommended that you read The Other Wolf series before you read Betrayal of the Court, though the events in the Other Wolf series are explained if you prefer to dive right in.

Another intriguing journey in The Other Realm series where we see Emory brought to trial and Jinx solving murders...

I love this series, it's a fun read, full of mystery, romance and often nail biting edge of the chair stuff and the world in which the series is built is magical!

I love how the series brings in a reading order, we've gone from Jinx to Lucy and back to Jinx and soon I'll be dipping into the Witch books... something I am looking forward to... however, this book, Betrayal of the Court frustrated me at times, the writing seemed to 'drag' a little in places and sometimes I found it difficult to pick up where I had left off. This hasn't phased me, I am excited to press on with the series but I think a slight rest is in order so until I return to this world, I'll be dipping into something else to recharge my batteries - it's just a shame I don't have a Gato or Indy to help me ha!

It would've been better if I knew what the hell was going on!!! Like, I caught up to speed but which book was I supposed to have read before this? The Other Wolves series? One of the main plot points in THIS book keep references things from THOSE books but there's no indication to have read those books before reading this one. Anyway, haven't read the other books yet and I'll get to this once I finish this series, but I always hated it when authors do things like this.

3.5/5.0

This installment seems to lack a bit of cohesiveness. Jinx runs around putting out fires throughout the book but to no real avail. The daemon is still loose with no clues, the anti-crea are still getting stronger etc. etc. with none of it coalescing, rather it is all just left hanging… except the judgement on Emory. Now that was a bombshell and a HUGE cliffhanger of an ending!

I think I liked this book even more than the last?! I found myself so engrossed in the story that I was shushing my partner so I could read just one more page.

It was full of suspense, and the author's signature humor kept me entertained throughout. The stakes were high and the story moved fast, filled with mystery, action, and snotty dragons.

I loved learning more about the dragon court and its intricate dynamics, and the ending left me gasping for air. I'm already counting down the days until the next installment!

There are major spoilers for Lucy's books very early on so I highly recommend you read that series first. Trust me, you'll love it. There was also some talk of rape (but no graphic details) so please be aware of that and look after yourself.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Heather G Harris, and was very eager to continue with Jinx's story.  I read it in one sitting!  After the events in Challenge, one would think that Emory and Jinx might have at least a little time to themselves.

But no, Jinx is juggling cases, the machinations of the court, and a spree of dead bodies!  If that is not enough she also has to deal with everything for a wedding in two months time, while worrying about her soon to be husband and the pressure he is under due to the arrival of the Dragon Elders!

Emory's position of Prime Elite hangs in the balance due to him keeping his word in Heather's Other Wolf series (you do not have to read it to understand what has happened but I would definitely recommend it) and it’s approaching judgement day.

There’s investigations, a new addition, a famous setting, previous characters popping in and a (surprise) hen night for Jinx.  What could possibly go wrong....

Eagerly awaiting the next instalment!!!!😉

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book. Omg what a roller coaster ride! Running between laugh out loud funny, sad moments and heart in mouth moments. I need more!! I was sad to finish the book and can't wait for the next one. The ending was incredible. I had chills. I will be desperately waiting on the next book.

Just when I think these books can't get any better, the author proves me wrong and pulls this one out of her hat! Dialling the tension up into the stratosphere, Heather masterfully kept me hanging on by my fingertips until the final page, before delivering a cliffhanger that plummeted my heart into my stomach. Yep I ended this book channeling my inner Reynard which would have put the gargoyle's cursing to shame, but HOO BOY was it fantastic. Once again the humor and action were magnificent making me fall even more in love with this series and world that the author has created. I don't know what the conclusion to Jinx's story will bring but I do know it will be epic, and I can't wait to find out.

When people from the other realm start to turn up bludgeoned to death, Jinx is asked to investigate the murders. But finding the culprit might be trickier than she anticipated as the victim's look to have been killed in the common. If that wasn't enough after coming to Lucy's aid a few weeks ago, which resulted in big consequences for Emory, it's now time to face the music as the dragon elders are on the way to decide his fate. Oh and there's the tiny problem of trying to locate the Eye of Ebrel which is still missing. With everything that's going on, can Jinx solve the murders, find the Eye and assist Emory, while finding the time to plan her wedding?

Jinx literally has more problems than she can shake a stick at, not only is she investigating some pretty brutal murders but she is worried about Emory and what the dragon elders decide his fate will be. One of the things that I love about Jinx is her ability to take on more than most and find the answers that she seeks, it might not always turn out how she expects but she'll never give up on trying. In amongst all of the chaos I was delighted to see a drunken Jinx again after Lucy surprises her with a hen do. This time a sober Emory gets to witness her shenanigans, which was not only adorable but hilariously funny, and getting to see a drunk Amber is worth more than any dragons hoard.

Emory again shows just why he is one of my favourite characters, his charming personality along with his love for Jinx really know no bounds. Faced with the consequences of his actions after helping Lucy, he takes it with the grace I've come to love about him. Yes he is concerned about the fate of the gargoyles, (and all the creatures under his rule) but to him he can face anything as long as he has the woman that he loves by his side, which is much more important to him than a title (swoon). Besides come what may, I just know this smexy dragon will have something up his sleeve, regardless of what happens next.

Once again Shirdal had me in fits of laughter, the cheeky griffin is in tip top form with his snarky quips and behaviour, and he never failed to bring a smile to my face even when being serious. I especially loved the the banter between him and Reynard, these two together were a comedic duo made in heaven, that I simply couldn't get enough of. Yep I absolutely adore him as he lights up the page whenever he is present making it official that there are two griffin's my heart now belongs to. (Damn it Heather!)

I'm off to the last book and eagerly awaiting what's in store for Jinx next, I've even prepared as I have a feeling there will be tears on the road ahead. This is a phenomenal series which will leave you wanting more, so if you haven't read it yet, I strongly recommend that you do. Love it 😁

Normally, I pathologically HATE it when a book ends on a cliffhanger.

In this case, however, I'll give the series a pass, since the next book is already a/ out, and b/ available on KU.

Once more, I really loved being back with Jinx and the gang. I loved the snark, loved the found family and loved the female friendships (even if Jinx thinks she's not great at them).

I also appreciated the way Ms Harris - at least towards the beginning of the story - acknowledges our culture's tendency to prioritise the rights of abusers and harrassers over those of their victims because silence is just easier.

Yes, "innocent until proven guilty" is an important principle - but there's a clear pattern at the beginning of the book of people hiding behind that principle and refusing to do anything at all because it's easier than confronting behaviour that *might* be predatory. And the result in the book, as in real life, is that abusers get to continuing their serial abuse because they know nobody will call them on it.

And now I'm very much looking forward to finding out what happens with both Emory and the whole daemon influence thing.

I just finished reading an ARC version of The Betrayal of the Court by Heather Harris.

The stories of the Dragon Court and the Lucy’s wolf pack are intersecting as Jinx and Emory deal with court politics, a murder case, anti-crea sentiment inspired by a daemon, and a leavening of humour.

The ending leaves me counting the days until Revival of the Court in June. Read it as soon as it is available.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book. Plenty of action and intrigue as Jinx investigates some Other murders. Also a good dose of anxiety as Emory deals with the Elder dragons. Cute little comedic moments with a new puppy Hell Hound and Jinx's hen-do (bachelorette party). Biting my nails waiting to see what happens in the next book. Highly recommend Heather G. Harris books!

I love the dynamic between the characters in this series. Jinx and Emory are a lovely paring and take power couple to the next level.

The side characters are well established and thought out. They have good personalities.

It would be best to read Lucy's story before this one.

I hope you love it too. Oh, it ends on a slight cliffy.

Happy Reading!

I think I'm in agreement with a lot of other readers when I say this is the best episode in the series yet.

Jinx is balancing no less than three cases which all tangle together in strange ways. In addition she has a huge and increasingly political wedding being planned around her and Emory is about to face the consequences of his actions with regards to the gargoyles. As plates go, Jinx's is loaded. Not that there isn't some serious fun to be had here too, as well as plenty of action. No spoilers, that's all I will say.

This was by turns gripping, amusing and infuriating - in the best way. I'm so glad the next one is due soon - especially after that ending. Highly recommend the whole series.

This one was a serious low point in the series.

Where did the characters from the Glimmer arc go? Here they're just sucking up endless amounts of shit as if it is their job.

Also, I'm glad Lucy said what she said about the gargoyles, because I was saying that from the outset - I think I even put it in a status update - so it was really pissing me off that everyone seemed to be missing the obvious. He's their ruler. It is his job to do everything he can to protect them. If he stood by and just watched the whole species die, it would have been the worst dereliction of duty imaginable.

But yeah, this book was annoying.

So many things happened in this book. This was a difficult time for Jinx and Emory. There were new betrayals that I was not expecting. And that was hard to deal with. There were people who were once trusted and are not now. Who can they trust going forward? It’s hard to tell. Nevertheless, I was hooked throughout this entire book.

I can’t wait for the next and I hope Jinx story doesn’t end soon.

TW: SA, missing children

*I am an arc reader for Heather*

UGH THIS BOOK WAS SOOOO GOOD! *ahem*

In "Betrayal" Jinx is being pulled many different ways: she has to find Eye of Ebrell, figure out why people are killing each other, try *not* to antagonise the Dragon Elders even though she has ~feelings~ about them AND try to plan her wedding (or at least okay the choices that Summer makes).
It is so much fun watching Jinx (accompanied by Shirdal) get up to all their antics as well as some puppy shenanigans.

Spending time with Jinx is always a delight and Heather really nicely balances the fun with the more serious aspects. This book is a bit darker than some of the other books so definitely check out Heather's website for the triggers list.

One of the things that I appreciate about Heather is how open she is to feedback. And if you're reading this review you might be like... isn't feedback part of being on the arc team?? And it is! But many authors (in my experience) get defensive about critiques like 'hey this might be a bit offensive' etc. Heather is the most receptive author I've worked with and she also takes the time to explain why (on the business side of things) some suggestions aren't feasible. While this should be the standard, it isn't and it is such a gift to work with an author that tries so very hard to make her books as inclusive as possible.

Honestly, if you want a good read, go try Protection of the Pack instead. That book by Heather Harris is action packed, full of excitement, and most important, features a heroine who makes smart choices. This book, on the other hand, sadly falls flat in that most important department.

If you've read Challenge of the Court, you'll know that it ended with a pseudo cliffhanger -- the all important Eye of Ebrell has gone missing, and Jinx has been tasked to find it. The only thing is, literally weeks have passed since that occurred, and she did nothing at all to find it. At all. Then, rather than actually doing detective work, she just goes back in time to see who took it. Voila, problem solved. Only the person who did the stealing suffers no consequences, and a side character who enabled the stealing loses their job, home and standing in the community. All of which Jinx seems perfectly AOK with...

I wouldn't have such a problem with that except that the other main story line this time around is that she's trying to solve a string of related murders, and she doesn't go back in time to just see who committed THAT crime. Her rationale that a dragon may off himself because the Eye was stolen as being a valid reason to go back in time, but stopping a serial killer is not because he may not kill again just makes absolutely no sense. In fact, many of the choices Jinx makes in the book make no sense, and seem to be simply methods of moving the story along (or creating one where there was none...) Ditto with her determination that the killer should just be let go without consequences (where, as stated above, another character made one poor decision that resulted in nothing harmful happening at all, and she'd fine with the fact that his life is completely ruined).

I'm not sure what has happened with these last two books, but they just seem to have random challenges thrown out there that Jinx solves either far too easily, or ignores. Her motivation is lacking, and her actual detective skills are not on display. Her thought process is all over the place, and I just have a hard time buying her as an actual person rather than a poorly sketched out main character.

I love Heather Harris' other series (Protection of the Pack), so am holding out hope that the third in this set is better than the first two and that Jinx is able to redeem herself.

I received an advanced copy to write an honest review before the book release date. Heather's writing style and her storytelling has resonated with me right from her very first book, so this was an easy commitment for me.

Heather G. Harris has unequivocally written another fantastic installment in The Other Realm series.

Betrayal of the Court is an absorbing read that is fast-paced with twists and turns and a few "what the heck" moments. It definitely left me wanting more.

Jinx's relationships continue to grow and deepen, especially with Emory. Court intrigue can undermine any relationship, but Jinx and Emory's love and commitment to each other is a constant theme in the story. They are each other's true north, which gives them the strength to overcome one hurdle after another.

Another aspect to Heather's stories that resonates with me is the friendships and found family theme. Jinx started her journey as a solo human being with few attachments. Now, she is a magical powerhouse at the center of an ever expanding network of magical beings who truly care about each other and their world.

The Other Realm can be a bit dog eat dog….but Jink and her circle always seek to do the right thing…and they do it with style.

I highly recommend Betrayal of the Court and all The Other Realm books. It is definitely a world worth visiting.

Great follow up

This is an outstanding follow up. Jinx and company are back and several relationships are explored further and new ones brought to light. There's loads of action, drama, mystery, pranks (a really not well thought out one), and a puppy!! A super destructive puppy, but still.
Emory and Jinx are dealing with a lot from the gargoyle situation ( gotta read all the books, trust me) and their upcoming nuptials.
Add in a trouble causing daemon/demon, politics in their own court, plus the human-like court and their bigoted views and this is a whopper of a tale.
It ends on a shocking turn and to me, an all most Cliff hanger that makes me want to scream bad words at Heather while I adore her at the same time for these stories.
All in all, I can recommend this enough. Or all the others. Get them and have a wild ride.

Another Great Jinx Story.

I truly love this world & the characters that Heather has created! Jinx has grown into her powers and with that she has become an even stronger person. Jinx is one of my favorite FMC's. Her fierce belief that justice is not just black/white and loyalty are some of the reasons she becomes such a target for both those of good and bad.

This book picks right back up where we left off (if you have not read the series this might be a bit of a spoiler) with Jinx & Emory dealing with the Dragon Court and the random murders of different creatures. Life is hectic. Jinx with her truth seeking skills are put to the test in more than a few ways. I'm not trying to give too much away…but Reynard & Shirdal are two of my favorite side characters.

“I love it when people try to assassinate me. It really starts my day off right.”

What I didn’t expect was the outcome to the murders and the Dragon Courts Betrayal. I really need the next book to see what comes from the decisions made.

Another thrilling time with Jinx and Co. Solving murders, finding the egg, the treacherous Elders coming, but the best part was her hen party where she and her friends got shit faced, it was hilarious though we still need to see what Elvira will do about finding out about Jinx being a truthseeker. Then came the rude surprise at the so called trial. What a bummer but let's see what happens next.

I love this series so much! This book had my emotions all over the place because the characters in the story are so near and dear to my heart! Each book builds on the one before and this one is absolutely fantastic! The murder mystery in this one is gruesome but so I intriguing and I did not foresee the mastermind behind the crime. The ending is absolutely brutal and ripped my heart in two! I cannot wait for the next book.

As always Heather outdid herself. She's has a talent for storytelling not many have anymore. This book, like all of the ones that came before it was fantastic. It's action packed with humour and interesting, engaging story that you can't help but see through to the end. I'm excited more than ever for the conclusion of this series's. (Although in no way am I ready for it to finish) Seeing jinx's and Emory's relationship grow had evolve was a pleasure. I feel lucky to have found such an amazing series and even more lucky to have connected with this amazing author. She never disappoints and always delivers. I cannot recommend her enough.

I was lucky enough to have received an ARC of this book.

I can't say enough good things about this series. I love Jinx. She is such an awesome character. Along with other great characters that just make the story more interesting. I love the introduction of a friend for Gato. Jinx was very busy in this one. She had a murder to solve, finding a gem that was stolen, a wedding to plan & a trial to prepare for. Now I am urgently awaiting the next one to see what happens next. I see some revenge coming.

Jinx and Emory can't seem to get a break.
In Betrayal of the Court we find our lovers each dealing with their own duties while trying to
find a moment to themselves.
Emory is waiting for the fallout after he changed the basilisks to Brethren using a forbidden spell to save their lives. The spell that transformed them causes an almost fanatical personal loyalty to the dragon that performed the ritual which is why it was originally banned. The Elder Dragons are coming to judge him using the Eye of Enbrel which is stored in the dragon's hoard that Emory is responsible for. But it's not where the dragons left it...
Jinx sets out to support Emory as Prima after she passed The Challenge of the Court, so when several murders occur involving some of the Prime's sworn Creatures Emory hires her to investigate. Two of the victims were satyrs under Emory's purview, but there were two other murders bearing similarities to the satyrs' death. An Elemental and a Human. Somewhere along the way she has to find the Eye of Enbrel before the Elder Dragons arrive, and support Emory in his trial.
Once again, Harris has given us a gem to read. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting; I just couldn't put it down. You won't be able to either.
