I was very surprised with the dept of information supplied in this book. The pictures and history of this popular studio is testimony to the Disney magic of storytelling.

A nice and richly illustrated history of the Disney studio from its humble beginnings in the early 1920's to the advent of the Disney Renaissance (the book is from 1988, and recounts the turbulent years of 1984-1986, but was released too early to tell the tale of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' and 'The Little Mermaid', although both films are mentioned in the end as being planned).

The book's biggest treasury, however, is its extensive filmography, which covers every Disney film, whether animated or not, from 1920 to 1987.

I'm a big fan of animated films, and interested in the technical side of things as well, so this was a good book for me. The first third of the book is a history of the Disney company, from its early, difficult beginnings, when there were several touch and go times, to the huge corporation it now is. The book was published in 1988, so misses out on the more recent developments in computer animation. The rest of the book is made up of an extensive filmography, which, while interesting, does get a bit tedious. This book is good for anyone interested in Disney, film or animation.

The text was well written and very informative. My only complaint was the use of black and white frame grabs of color films. It's interesting that the authors refer to the release of Cinderella as a renaissance for the Disney studio, when the official Disney Renaissance began a year after this book was published with the release of The little Mermaid. There's a nice section containing every film made by the Disney studio (until 1988). Directors are mentioned, as well as a summary for each film. Also listed is a listing of all the academy award winners and nominations.
