Most were typical fairy tales but 3 things stood out: 1. Commoners who help royalty don't ask for anything in return 2. I liked the story about the search for a godmother. I learned about their culture. 3. Nice touch to end the anthology with a reminder that fairy tales are usually told to help children sleep.
Some of these were familiar from other countries' collections of fairy tales, but not exactly. A lot of fun. These are definitely post-pagan tales, so don't expect Baba Yaga, though :)
After reading some deeply disturbing and modern Euro fiction (the Lisbeth Salander series), these much older Euro folk tales were ALMOST as gruesome.....sometimes. And sometimes the tales were just enchanting and fun. I am less angry at those Czech cabin stairs in the Sumava mountains that kicked me in the a$$.....Their literature has soothed me.
