Forced to leave her Indian people, Saylah, the daughter of a white man and an Indian woman, seeks a new life amid the white settlers in the Pacific Northwest, where she encounters an exceptional family of English pioneers, the Ivys
Where to start? I cannot say enough about this author. She just doesn't write well, she writes magically. It like each word lifts you up and walks you into a story that is so intriguing, mystical, and enthralling. Every chapter brings you closer to the people, the land, and feeling of each person written. When you read this book, you not only feel like your there, but you are watching the whole thing unfold in front of your eyes. How she does this is beyond me, but one truly talented lady.
The story is well written and plot is great. Characters are so believable and you love each person written in this book. This author is not just talented but amazing in how she writes.
I read this book when it first came out in the early 1990's. I was awaiting a sequel but the author seemed to drop off the map. I was recently discovered a sequel was written so I wanted to read the original again first. The author's descriptions of the natural beauty of the setting are very lyrical. I can almost see and smell from her writings. The characters are interesting enough to make me want to read the sequel more than 25 years later!
This is one of the best books that I have read in years. Once started it was very hard to put down. Kathryn kept the story going from page one until the very end.
Beautiful love story about the human spirit. This book explored so many emotions. Sayla had to learn not only how to trust the love of her new family but herself too. Then to forgive herself and the family she left behind. The turmoil that her and Julian go through is complex and rewarding at the end. I have read this thought provoking book every year since it was first published and I have grown with this book in so many emotional levels. It deals with humility, love, anger, acceptance, the power to forgive, trust, and love again. I have to admit I almost gave up on the book in the beginning because it was a slow start for me but something told me to hold on and I'm so glad I did.
Absolutely amazing book. Fascinating insight into Native American culture. Awesome characters. Touching story that really makes you stop and think about how things are in your own life. I thought it was just awesome to get to go with Tanu/Saylah through her transformations and see her finding herself on her own terms. Simply one of the best books I've ever read.
Love story between a Native American girl and a white man. Not bad, but too long. Would've been a good story at half the size. Not too original, but not bad.
Wow this books was not what I expected. I was thrilled reading it and it taking place in British Columbia and involving the Native Indians there was a breath of fresh air.
