Delivery with a Smile #1

Delivery with a Smile

Rate this book
Jack worked hard to obtain a normal life. He might not love it, but it's better than the criminal life he left behind—even if it cost literally everything, and he really does hate being a damned delivery man. On the bright side, his route includes a friendly old lady who makes the world's best cookies and regales him with tales of her hot, jet-setting son. Normalcy definitely has perks.

Then he walks in on her and her son arguing with men at gunpoint.

Dim, undeveloped main characters, a caricature-like secondary character (Allen’s mother), boring story and dull erotica.

The repetitions irritated me to death. When Jack was not shrugging or amused, he shined his fake smiles at the world. It’s a miracle he wasn’t shot simply because of this.

I collected all the smiles, so brace yourself…

No romance, no affectionate moments, no humor (or if it is humor, I don’t get it…). I just realized that I had the same impressions on The Matchmaker too. So this kind of writing style is not for me, that’s for sure.

This shorty hit the ground running and kept the pace until the final (abrupt) page.

I didn't even glance at the synopsis, so the unexpected premise was actually a treat, if a little (a lot) unrealistic.

Overall, an engaging story for its size and theme.

THIS IS MY STORY! Hehe. Okay, not my story but it was written because I posted the Dear Author request! Lol.

I absolutely loved it and Jack and Allen. Allen's mom is a hoot. I hope Ms. Derr writes more about these two some day. I'd love to know how their relationship works out with Jack as Allen's new handler! :D

Thanks so much, Megan! :D

*** 3,5 Hitman stars ***

Allen laughed again, and really, the man was crazy hot for all he looked liked he'd fallen out of a movie or a video game.

Enjoyable read where a delivery man finds common ground with another "delivery" man.

And his mom? LOL

--------------------------------
"You should sit up front, sweetie."
"Mom!"
"Don't be sore with me for being right," she replied tartly.

Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group, Hot Summer Days event. Can be downloaded for an eReader at Less Than Three Press.

This was a great little short. Despite the length this was a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end and a nice HFN ending. It's not as easy as it sounds to have a short but thorough story with just enough detail and character development but not so much that it bogs down the story. Well done Ms. Derr! If you liked this then I would recommend one of my favorite hitman books (or books period), Zero at the Bone by Jane Seville.

YIPPIE, there is a sequel to this! The Christmas Package

This was actually pretty good! I only wish had been longer. Great banter and chemistry, but it felt rushed because of the short length. Still, a nice story.

Really fun free short story about Jack, a delivery man with a shady past, whose usual delivery to a sweet old lady goes totally wrong when he walks into a gun fight and finds his life taking a 180 as he’s swept up with a hit man (and his mom).

This is the first story I’ve read by Derr, and I appreciated both its humor and its fast pace, as well as the developing chemistry between the MCs. A very fun read, and I’m looking forward to checking out the sequel The Christmas Package.

As a heads-up, this is a free read from the M/M Romance Group’s Hot Summer Days event, but if you’re not a member of that group, it’s also free to grab from Less than Three Press.

I’m not sure what I expected of this.

I’m not sure what I thought of this.

I’m not sure what this review will be like (other than ‘short’).

Okay, it was a decent enough short story. It wasn’t anything mind blowing, but it amused me somewhat. There are plenty of faults – repetition in the writing, the flatness of some characters – but there were enough positive aspects for me to give it a three star rating. Mostly, the amusement won me over.

It was a free read, therefore I cannot complain.

The funny thing is this was just ok for me as a short, but if it was ever adapted into a full length novel I think I would absolutely love it. The characters were quirky and fun, and it was nothing like what I expected. I loved the premise and the action, but everything was just a little too rushed for me to really enjoy it.

I want to see Jack and Allen really have time to fall for each other not just fall into bed. I giggled madly at the turns this adventure took from the no one special delivery man who turns out to be a whole lot more than expected, to the hit man's mom whose one remaining goal in life is to hook her son up with a "nice boy." Nothing was quite what I expected and it was a fun romp. I just feel a little cheated because I feel like these characters and this story could be fan-freakin-tabulous as a full length novel.

Still as a short it's complete with a nice beginning, middle, and end. There's fun banter and flirting. Plenty of action to kick things off with a bang and drag the reader along on the ride. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that maybe someday I'll see something a little more come along and I'll get the chance to snap it up in a heartbeat. :) I do enjoy Ms. Derr's writing after all.

These stories -- this and its short short sequel, The Christmas Package -- are funny, breezy, entertaining reads with just enough romance and just enough action. I only wish there were more of them, and that they were longer.

Funny and not a dull moment. One badass, one sweet old lady, and one cute delivery boy show each other that appearances are deceiving.

Megan Derr! Where have you been all my life?
Looks like I'm going on a shopping spree at Less Than Three Press since that seems to answer my question!

I see your double and raise you! I couldn't have said it better myself. All calm cool and collected just makes me sweat!

This tripped my trigger in every single way that counts! I have it bad for snappy dialog and man do you have a way with words. You have most definately mastered the art of spinnin' a yarn!

Here's hopin' to see these two in Rio.. real soon.

Sexy, funny story about a hitman getting stuck with a suprisingly delivery man!!!

Lips brushed the back of his neck, making him shiver. "Now that's ....."
"If you make one joke about special deliveries," Jack cut in, "I will never sleep with you again, and I'll tell your mom you were mean to me."

Another freebie. I usually like Megan Derr's stories but this one simply didn't click for me. Both characters were/used to be professional criminals yet they behaved like complete amateurs. I mean, I know this was not David Morrell or Lee Child's kind of story but still. A lot of "fucks" does not a professional hitman make. Also, the storytelling was a bit confusing, especially at the beginning. And again - the author really should get a proper editor; for a short story there were a lot of mistakes there (latest instead of last and such).

When I read the prompt to this DritC story, I was really looking forward to learn more about this charming delivery boy that ended up in a dangerous situation. However, the storyline was completely unbelieveble and I didn't feel connected to the characters at all. I didn't feel the attraction between them and I was quite relieved when the story was over.

I still want to express my gratitude for the many authors that participate in this great event and I can't wait to read more of the stories!

Funny, loved the mom and the whole "crime-family-business" angle for both Allan and Jack. Great dialogue, just all around clever and witty. Loved the line (after they'd just finished a roll in bed)

Sometimes it's nice to have a quick read and this one hits all the high notes. I love a romance with humor and this one is definitely lot. Amusingly tongue-in-cheek situation and funny dialogue kept me smiling. The romance plotline was brief but rewarding, with some nice explicit sizzle at the end. Recommended.

Delivery with a Smile was written for the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s ‘Hot Summer Days’ event. It’s the first book in the ‘Delivery with a Smile’ series. This is told in first person from Jack’s, the deliveryman’s, pov.

Jack has worked very hard to be a normal guy with a normal job and a normal life and that’s just the way he wants it, but while on his delivery rounds he makes a delivery to his favourite old lady and walks in on more than he ever hoped for.

This is a great story that I didn’t want to end. Jack wants a normal life but finds himself tangled up in a delivery that he could have done without but happily embraces. Mrs Sweets is his favourite delivery and when he walks in to find her and her son held at gunpoint he is shocked, now he is on the run with Allen Sweet and his past experience helps him keep cool.

Sometimes I wonder if Megan Derr can do no wrong and then I read a story like this and I say yes she can… because I WANT MORE. This story is just brilliant, it’s humorous, enjoyable, and it has loveable characters and a great storyline that you just want to go on. Jack has a complex past which comes in handy when he finds himself having to run with Allen and his mother, Allen and his mother are much more than they seem, and Allen and Jack make a well suited pair when they have to finish Allen’s ‘special’ delivery.

This would make a fantastic novel if it was ever expanded because there is so much potential, it is an awesome short story that has a bit of danger, hot sex, running from the bad(ish) guys, great banter between the characters and a wonderful sweet old lady.

I recommend this to those who love hitmen, people hiding from the mob, smiling deliveries, a great story, a hot connection between characters and a happy ending.

***Read as part of the free Don't Read in the Closet: Volume Two anthology. Story #8***

Two very different delivery men with much more in common than they thought on a road trip.
"You really are a dick. Your mom is right, you need manners."
"I say please and thank you when necessary."
"And when more than that is necessary?"
"That's what the guns are for."

This was fun! I would like to read more about these two. - And Allen's mom!

I love Megan Derr stories. This one needed some more pages.
It felt like there was a lot of information missing.
But I like the basis. I'm a sucker for assassins and criminal stories.
I'd love to read this at full length.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Still loved it and wanted more.
I really would love a full length story from this.
Has all the elements that tickle my buttons, but it's just to short.
Still it packs a lot of info into so few pages, and the story doesn't feel cut short, even if it could be expanded.
"Delivery with a Smile" surely will make you smile all day.
It's funny, cute and smart with great characters and great writing.
A story about delivery boy (Jack: no boy in this story and I'm not delivery boy!!), hot-hitman-in-suit, and hot mama playing matchmaker for her hitman-son.
Dear Megan, please make sequel for your boys. They're deserves for more than 30 pages.
