, 130 pages, fourteen stories, with a colour illustrated title page, and black and white illustrations of the fairy tales, each concerning a dragon and the occasional dragoness
Ruth Manning-Sanders, youngest daughter of an English minister, describes her childhood as “extraordinarily happy. . . with kind and understanding parents and any amount of freedom.” She read omnivorously, and she and her two sisters wrote and acted their own plays. A Shakespeare scholar at Manchester University, she later married Cornish artist George Manning-Sanders. They began married life in a horse drawn caravan, and traveled to all parts of the British Isles. Mrs. Manning-Sanders has collected folk and fairy stories from around the world and she published more than 90 books during her lifetime.
The beneficent dragons, unsurprisingly, mostly come from the Far East, with a couple of Greek ones. But, besides the dragons that demand maidens, there are also ones like ogres, and ones that turn into doves, and one that makes a rather diabolical bargain.
Some of the short stories in this were a great read. It’s a good book for kids to see different sides of dragons. We usually think of them as these scary creatures, but in some of the stories they were helpful.
I really enjoyed reading this collection of stories! They’re not super long and they are very readable. I also liked the mixture of cultural stories and display of “good” and “bad” dragons. Its a very fun dragon collection.
This book it exactly what it says on the tin. It is a collection of stories about dragons.
I really liked this book because the stories felt very much like fairy tales and some very reminiscent of well known stories. Yet they also felt unique enough to be an enjoyable read. Would completely recommend for kids and fans of dragons!
A very enjoyable collection! Not the author's best, but a lot of fun nonetheless. Would highly recommend to the younger reader who is looking for a good collection of fairy tales. Manning-Sanders is one of the best!
My favorite stories included "Constantes and the Dragon", "Stan Bolovan", "Yanni," and "The Thirteenth Son of the King of Erin".
