Rhinos Don't Eat Pancakes

Daisy's mum and dad are always too busy to listen to a word that she says, so when, one day, she tells them that a big purple rhino has just walked into the house and taken a chomp of her pancake, guess what? That's right - nobody listens! But there's a surprise in store for Mum and Dad when they discover that a big purple rhino has gone missing from the zoo. Perhaps they should have taken more notice of what Daisy had to say.
Kids will love this funny story about a little girl and her most unlikely new friend.

Heerlijk voorlezen.

Surprisingly serious, this book takes on its subject at its face value. There is, in fact, a rhino. Said rhino moves into the house and does, against all odds, eat the pancakes. It's just that Mom and Dad don't see/can't acknowledge the rhino/elephant in the room. This works as a metaphor, but totally at a kids level in its word choice, quick-change attitudes, and brightly colored pictures.

Another one of those books that seems to be slyly directed towards parents more than children. It really is amazing how easy it is when you're an adult to dismiss a child when you've got other things vying for your attention. I'm glad the parents wised up at the end.

I hate this book. It's not cute, it's not funny, it's not clever. The ending is so abrupt.

Loved the last page and its little twist. It's tough being a kid and not being taken seriously. It's tough being a parent and not having/making enough time for your kid. It's tough all around. Thank goodness books like this with just the right touch of whimsy to leaven an otherwise lumpy situation are around to remind us all to take life just a bit more gently and lightly.

Daisy tells her parents about the purple rhino but they are to busy to listen until they visit the zoo and realize she was telling the truth. Sometimes all you have to do is take the time to listen. Wonderful little story.

This book is so true to life. Sometimes parents are busy and don't listen and don't comprehend what children are trying to tell them. And sometimes parents are great listeners and are very in tune to what they children need before they say anything. All parents spend some time in both camps. Isn't it nice that we have friends that we can have fun with too.

** Talking Points: Are you a good listener? Are your parents good listeners? Who are some of your good friends? What do you like to do together with your friends? And what do you like to do together with your family?

** Essential Oil Pairing Tip: I'd diffuse doTERRA's Balance essential oil blend. It's great at helping to create calm, grounded environments. Parent's need balance. Children need balance.

I read this book to my 4 yo daughter. She loved this book. It's a very cute book with a great message to parents. The illustrations are adorable, I want a purple rhino!

Daisy's parents never listen to her, they are always to busy and preoccupied. One morning at breakfast a purple rhino eats her pancakes. When she tries to tell her parents they are too busy and dismiss her. She ends up befriending the rhino and talking to the rhino since her parents won't listen. Her parents eventually find out about the rhino and from that day forward they start listening to Daisy when she has something to say.

"Daisy thought it was a stupid idea when there was already a perfectly good rhino sitting on the sofa"

Nobody listens to Daisy! So when a rhinoceros shows up in her kitchen and starts eating pancakes, neither of her parents pay attention. Daisy and the rhino become friends and her parents start listening to her. I enjoyed the subtle jab at zoo's not being a good place for animals and the art is out of this world beautiful. The people represented are a white hetero-normative family.

I love this book it is adorable and has a great message about when you don't feel like anyone will listen to you there is always someone or something that will be there for you. Also, it has a great idea of helping those who are lost and that it is important to not only talk but to listen to others. I think this would be a great book to read to young children as it is also pretty funny with amazing pictures depicting the big purple rhino in the story.

I love Sara Ogilvie’s illustrations! This book is a perfect class read - right up to early KS2. It’s quirky, sweet and silly. The present-but-absent parents will be familiar to some children but with a reassuring happy ending.

4 sterren - Nederlandse hardcover
