A prolific writer, Gideon who also writes as Dana Ransom and Lauren Giddings, attributes her creative output, which once peaked at seven novels in one year, to her love of history and a gift for storytelling. She also credits the discipline learned through a background in journalism and scheduling writing time around diaper changes, Scout meetings, band lessons and outings to the Zoo Boo...and, of course, OCD. The due date for her third book and her second son were on the same day...and both were early! When on deadline, she'd turn on the laptop between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. to get a chapter in before work.
While the pace is often hectic, Gideon, a Gemini, enjoys tackling diverse projects. One month it’s researching the gritty existence of 1880’s Texas Rangers only to jump to modern themes of intrigue and possibly a legal thriller or two. Then, it’s back to the shadowy netheworld of shape shifters, vampires and movie serial killers. When not working on her latest plot twist before sunrise, even now that she no longer works 9-5, she enjoys indulging in Netflix, hosting her critique group, and feeding all things fur, fin and fowl. And, of course, reading.
Detective Charlotte (Cee Cee) Caissie is called to a crime scene that looks like it was committed by something superhuman. She's also trying to take down New Orleans crime boss Jimmy Legere and the two objectives intersect when his enforcer, Max Savoie, gets in her path. He's mysterious with an outrageous reputation but Cee Cee can't seem to resist him. Max was drawn to the courageous detective from their first meeting and to say a relationship between the two would be complicated is an understatement.
I enjoyed the story a lot though it was not without its issues. There are moments of writing brilliance, especially when capturing Cee Cee's emotional history. Oddly enough, it's the same character creating some unevenness in the story. Cee Cee's behavior at times was perplexing, downright cruel, which seemed off. Max, on the other hand, can't be more interesting and complex, completely mesmerizing me. Their relationship is at the crux of everything as all of the mystery and intrigue is tied to both of them in some way.
It seems like there are loose ends remaining and my hope is they're addressed in the next book. I liked the story's complexity and will definitely continue the series.
★★★★½ Not quite 4½ … more like 4¼... but, really, I couldn't put it down, so I'll up it to 4½. I'm doing a "buddy read" of it and I zoomed ahead of everyone else, even though I read another book in between, trying to slow myself down to keep pace with the others.
I've never read this author before, but she held me enthralled. I arrogantly kept thinking, "Well, I wouldn't have done it that way. Oh, that's a mistake." But her way was the right way, as I loved how she changed my opinion in certain scenes. And kept me guessing. Definitely worked for me.
This one was GOOD! I enjoyed this book even though it wasn't what I thought. For some strange reason, i was expecting a vampire book. However, it was a shifter book but it kind of wasn't. the emphasis wasn't on the animal but on the story and evolution of the characters.
Detective Charlotte Caissie had been trying to bring down mob boss Jimmy Legere for years. She hoped to avenge her father as well has herself for the pain and suffering at the order of Legere. In order to get to the mob boss, you must first go through his cold enforcer Max Savoie.
The more we got to see Max work, the more you could see there was more that lay under the cold surface of this notorious killer. How far is Charlotte willing to go to get her justice?
The character growth in the book was great. The story moved at a great pace, it was interesting, it was well written and the characters were likable. I always like the romances with the MCs on opposite sides of the law because it poses a great dilemma for both sides. Even though there was a little focus on shifter group, I am interested in seeing how they really work. I assuming book 2 will really go deeper as Max becomes a part of them.
I feel bad for Detective Caissie because her credibility is shot. She is compromised and I don't know how she expects to straddle this fence. I love her with Max but she has to give up almost everything, so I want to see how this plays out in book 2.
*Rereading yet again Jan. 2018! Love this book even after reading it many times! Let me start by saying I devoured this book in an afternoon and a late night of reading. I couldn't put it down. The chemistry between the main characters - Max Savoie, enforcer for the local mob boss and Charlotte (CeeCee) Caissie, homicide detective for the New Orleans Police department, is smoking hot! Of course, this is a budding relationship that can never be. There is no future relationship for a dedicated cop and a mob hit man. Max Savoie is the hot, sexy, dangerous, mysterious, not quite human bodyguard for Jimmy Legere - New Orleans crime boss. CeeCee has made it her life work to bring Legere and his mob empire down. When the chemistry between her and Max heats up, she realizes she may have just found her way in to gather information and destroy Legere. But she didn't count on falling in love.
CeeCee is a sassy, hot, sexy, take no shit New Orleans detective. She is as tenacious as a bull dog and nothing comes before her job - until a relationship with Max forces her to make some tough choices. She struggles with trust issues stemming from a tragic past and daddy issues. Both she and Max carry dark secrets that may be too deep and unforgivable for them to overcome.
Max is strong, sexy and yet vulnerable, and, oh yes, not quite human. You can't read this book and not fall in love with him. He is loyal to Legere - the man who rescued him as a child from a nightmare in the bayou & raised him to walk on a short leash and obey his commands...even to kill. Max loves and trusts Legere like a father. His world starts to both come together and yet fall apart as he is drawn to the alluring detective who can destroy him. Max has a big secret that he has to fight to protect, as his very life depends on it - he is a shifter. How can he ever expect a woman - a cop - like CeeCee to love someone like him?
Many secrets will be revealed in the reading of this amazing love story. Yes, love story...I found Masked By Moonlight to not only be an exciting, emotional rollercoaster ride but a very romantic one as well. Paranormal Romance and Romance/Suspense fans - You will love this story which continues in Book 2, Chased By Moonlight. This series is a must read. I'm a devoted fan.
Detective Charlotte “Cee Cee” Caissie is determined to bring down crime boss, Jimmy Legere, the man responsible for her father’s murder. Her best bet is to turn his enigmatic henchman, Max Savoie, against him. However, Max’s loyalty runs deep and has its roots in a dark secret that, if exposed, could implicate him in a series of disturbing murders.
Traumatic childhood experiences have molded both Cee Cee and Max into the people they are now. While Cee Cee’s past has made her strong, there is also an underlying sense of vulnerability that makes her very sympathetic. That said, her attitude toward Max leaves much to be desired and her behavior is often irritating. In fact, there are moments where she is actually unlikable.
Max is simply incredible. He is so sweet and loving toward Cee Cee (who isn’t always deserving), but it is impossible to forget exactly what he is and the danger that he poses. Thankfully, his secret is revealed early on so the story avoids the pitfalls of the exceedingly annoying "keeping secrets” trope. There is, however, an incongruity in his characterization as his relationship with Legere undermines his alpha status and makes him appear weak and submissive. Moreover, he doesn’t always exhibit the intelligence that he is credited with and has one or two TSTL moments.
The banter between Cee Cee and Max is wonderful and their romance is intense and steamy. The rest of the plot is quite straightforward although certain twists are predictable, such as the identity of the villain and the fact that .
All in all, Masked by Moonlight is a promising beginning to a series that has definite potential and it will be interesting to see where Gideon takes her troubled characters and their unlikely romance.
I wanted to like this book better. It had a lot going for it. The writing was well done. The werewolf part was interesting. The way he had been manipulated as he grew up to keep him emotionally dependent on the mob boss was interesting although it made him a bit too beta for my taste. The way he was so crazy about her was nice although it caused him to forgive her for all her doubts and betrayals. It seemed there was no real reason for him to love her beyond hot sex.
I didn't care for the heroine's character. Not only did she keep betraying and doubting him, she could not commit. Her being a cop covering for a mob boss (Max once he inherited the position) was just problematic for me and she didn't seem real strong, all her strength seemed to be mere posturing. We are also told she is really physically strong but not given any reason that she has iron fists.
The biggest thing I have against it though was it was one betrayal after another. Mostly Charlotte telling Max she loved him then betraying him. This must have happened 6 or so times in the book. I just got to skimming at the end because I was so sick of it.
When the book ends they have made up again but considering the way the book went, that reconcilliation will last at most 2 days. Where is the HEA in that. I don't believe this relationship will last. Surely as some point, he will get tired of her doubting crap.
At the back of the book there is an excerpt of the next book and the first thing she does is doubt him when a girl turns up missing. I won't be reading any more of this series. I don't really care for series where the main characters repeat and I certainly don't care to read about characters who waffle on trust and commitment over the course of several books.
Nancy Gideon's Masked By Moonlight has it's ups and downs as a novel. She has a great talent for writing and delivers an intriguing story line, but it's her characters who drag this novel down and make you question this book.
Charlotte (Cee Cee) Caissie is a New Orleans detective who as of late, has been working more and more crime scenes with mutilated bodies. Throats ripped out and organs missing, these murders look like the work of a vicious animal. All signs point her to local mob boss Jimmy Legere. To her, Jimmy isn’t just another con man, he’s the man responsible for her father’s death and she wants nothing more than to bring him down.
Yet Cee Cee has one problem standing in her way: Max Savoie, Jimmy’s right-hand man. She knows Max is attracted to her and sees her opportunity to finally get to Jimmy and enact her revenge. What she doesn’t expect are the intense feelings she’s developing for Max. The more she’s around him, the more she cares for him. They both know their relationship is impossible. She’s a cop...and he’s on the wrong side of the law. Will they both be able to follow their hearts?
The premise was smart, the hero was sexy and fascinating, but the heroine was about as prickly as a porcupine. Max was vulnerable, confused and mentally suffering. He was alone in the world and looking for someone to comfort him...and Cee Cee was not that person. It seemed every other chapter she was betraying him, manipulating him and stepping on his heart at every opportunity. So like a beaten dog that doesn’t know what else to do, he kept coming back to her. It was frustrating to read.
I also extend the possibilities of reality with most, if not all books I read. I understand bending historical accuracies or the norms of reality can make for a great book. With that in mind, I accepted the attraction between the muscles of a crime mob and a cop. It had great potential to make for an dynamic story about an impossible couple. What I had difficulty believing was the lack on consequences each side faced. There was no mention of a supervisor threatening Cee Cee’s job when it became very clear she was crossing lines she wasn’t meant to cross. Max and Jimmy’s people were committing crimes and she was either looking the other way or willing to supply him with an alibi. I couldn’t determine if that was romantic or depressing.
The heroine was the main problem. Some of her issues ultimately just made me dislike her. Max on the other hand, was a well-crafted alpha who had insecurities that made him absolutely charming. His youth has been full of emptiness and lacking love, so his feelings towards Cee Cee filled a void in this lost man. It makes him see his life and situation in a different light and makes him want something better for himself.
Max was fragile on the inside, but to the outside he could be a force to be reckoned with. It was easy to see why Cee Cee would become weak in the knees around him.
“Nice coat,” he said at last.
“You like it?” She adjusted the lapels of his black trench and stroked her hands over the smooth fabric. The Armani label said it must have cost him a small fortune. “It’s hard to find the right fit when you’re as tall as I am, and so stain resistant, too. Even the nastiest stains.”
“Are you saying I’m the right fit for you, detective?”
“That’s not what I’m saying at all, Max...You want your coat?”
“You hang on to it.” His gaze swept over her, the small, self-satisfied smile still on his face. “It looks right fine where it is. Think of me when it’s wrapped around you.”
Will I read book two? Probably. More than anything, I’m curious where this storyline is going. Maybe I haven’t had enough time to acquaint myself with Charlotte and perhaps the next book will shed a little more light on her character. While Gideon’s writing is solid, and her alpha hero is dead sexy, her storyline is full of holes and her heroine is cringe-worthy.
Sitting back with a big silly grin on my face after finally finishing this unexpected thrill of a book. The title and the cover weren't particularly appealing to me, but friends had touted it highly. Should have listened sooner!
The interaction between the two main characters, Max & Charlotte, is dark chocolate-with-cayenne intense. They are not the typical couple one sees in PNR novels. I was fist pumping the air when I first read CeeCee's physical description: short spiky hair and cafe au lait skin. How often does one see that? She's a Bad Mama Jama, who can kick ass in high heels. Similarly, Max is a study in contrasts: powerfully male, vulnerable and conflicted. In a total departure from the tired romance novel formula, he is the one who needs protecting and she is the one to provide it. His helplessness somehow makes him even hotter. (I love that the guy can't drive and needs his woman to take the wheel!)
Their dialogue is by turns crisp, wickedly witty, sexy without ever being vulgar, and earnest without being sappy. The insight into their thoughts builds a delicious tension out of the yearning and conflict Max and CeeCee feel for each other. Best of all, author Nancy Gideon has set her MCs on a path that makes their future a giant question mark, HEA in this book notwithstanding.
This is a well crafted, clever, unexpected thrill ride. Thankfully, there is more Max & CeeCee pond-filling interaction to come.
Masked by Moonlight was a lot different to what I expected. I loved the premise of the heroine, Cee Cee, being a cop, and the hero Max being an enforcer for a crime lord. I was immediately intrigued by Max - he was weirdly submissive though we knew him to be a werewolf/shape shifter. As the story progressed we got to know Cee Cee and honestly I didn't like her at all until about 75%. I wanted to protect Max from Cee Cee because she was just another user in his life and he deserved better than her manipulations. The swings of their relationship was tiresome to read, and to be honest I didn't know what Max saw in her.
The world building is virtually non existent - largely because Max was kept isolated from his own kind. I hope this is further expanded in book 2 - this might explain the primal attraction that Max felt for Cee Cee. As it was there was a whole lot of insta-love with nothing to back it up.
Overall, it was a decent enough read and I would give it 3.5 stars. I'm starting book 2 right away.
I think I would have given this read 4 stars if not that this is a new theme for me and those that I have read and never finished left me like ...ah.. I'll pick it back up.
I enjoyed this book much more then I had thought I would. Please note that the shifter/wolf world is new to me.
Max is a deadly killer "owned" my is master/father thug Jimmy Legere, that has the city of New Orleans on lock down to his power. When Max is introduced I found him alluring, very dark and his responses were spot on hot. He came off very alpha. He's intelligent by his own means and is crossed by what he is. As a child he was taken in by his master/father into a world of dog eat dog world where he's schooled to be top dog in harsh life. To the outside world Max is known as a ruthless killer and pet of Legere. At this point I'm intrigued and want to read more. Then I see what's life behind the Legere walls and found myself say WTF? What happened to my alpha male Max?!.... Max came across as just that a "pet" doing what ever was told to him And laying at the feet of Legere had me thinking...do I want to keep reading? I felt that Max was just a killer on a leash and when he was showing signs of being submissive, that intelligent, strong man just disappeared. But this reaction had me determined to keep reading.... And reading... And reading... And just like that it all clicked!!! Now I'm like yes!
The writing was a really good. I enjoyed learning more about Max. You see what he needs to portray to the world but behind close doors he's a scared boy trying to figure out where he belongs. He's loyal to Legere, the only kindness he has ever experience to which he thinks is just that.
Then Max finally gets the opportunity to step into the life of Charlotte Caissie. She flips is world upside down. She invokes feelings and thoughts that he only imaged he could feel and is driven to take action. This relationship puts a spin on the out come of Max making a print on what's his life can be.
This is the part that had me wanting to give an extra star but ....I couldn't wrap my head around how Max laid his head on laps of people he felt emotion to. How he seemed naive and lack of self worth. But then flips and is the Max I want to read more about. But then I was like wait?, what?, CeeCee becomes a game changer. I'm I reading the roles reverse? I have read books on how the male is always saving the female, the female is coming to terms of who she is and needs a male to help her decide how to figure out, the female trust and gets hurt, the female needs love and support to make this great decision .... But Max is the "male" going through all those emotions......I loved it!!!!!!! This was a good treat. Finally a male that needs saving! :.)
I liked reading Max feeling torn by loyalty, love and sacrifice. You saw a side that was humbled. But you also saw a side of an alpha male making is mark on the world of his own choosing. Seeing Max learning what and how he is and after the death of Legere you see him changing and taking control in his own hands. So my alpha!
I'm invested in the series and want to see Max come into his full worth. Can't wait to read the second in this surprising new theme. Finally a writer who got me hooked on shifter wolves! Thank you Nancy Gideon for getting it right and making a believer out of me. Yes, there are good shifter books out there!
Mobsters + shifters + tough cop heroine = a great beginning to the Moonlight Trilogy!
Masked by Moonlight starts with a gruesome murder of two men. Charlotte is called in to investigate.
Detective Charlotte "Cee Cee" Caissie is the daughter of a fallen cop. She doesn't apologize for her "in-your-face looks .. short dark hair .. model-sharp angles under café lait skin." She tends to dress more like Xena the Warrior Princess than Suzie Homemaker. But she's "tough, confident and capable. All Cop. All the time." That's not quite true though. She is strong, but also very fragile. She quickly turns to mush when she's around Max and for Max, Charlotte has become an impossible temptation to him.
Their attraction to each other is complicated by the fact that Charlotte is dedicated to putting away criminals and Max works for the city's Mob Boss. Max is an always-frustrating enigma for Charlotte. No one knows anything about him, no birth certificate, no SS#, driver's license, etc.
Max Savoie is "tall, dark and bold", Jimmy Legere's right hand. His silent enforcer. He's "confident without being cocky, powerful without aggression, and exudes complete control over what he allows the world to see."
Jimmy "rescued" Max when he was boy. He raised him to do/act/speak/dress exactly as Jimmy tells him to do. He's his "pet", given anything he wants, but owns nothing. Jimmy's world is all he's ever really known. As he becomes closer to Charlotte, the short leash Jimmy keeps him on becomes looser. For the first time in his life, Max wants something for himself, Charlotte. Max's past and despicable treatment by Jimmy have made him who he is and now he's becoming "more".
Tiny little annoyance: Charlotte is (almost) always referred to as "Cee Cee" when speaking, but hardly ever when spoken to by anyone. It's always Charlotte or Lottie (??Another nickname??)
I will definitely be reading the whole trilogy. I love mob stories and this tied in shifters in a way that made it a super fun read.
This is pure Urban Fantasy. A human girlie cop gets tangled up with a supernatural criminal enforcer, in a time and place that doesn't recognise the supernatural.
Homicide Detective Charlotte Caissie, NOPD, knows that crime boss Jimmy Legere's behind the latest homicide she's investigating and runs into his enforcer Max Savoie. Max does whatever Jimmy wants, as Jimmy rescued him as a child and has brought him up.
Well, Max did everything Jimmy wanted until Max met Cee Cee. Then all is confusion for him, and Cee Cee certainly doesn't help.
Mob politics also rears its ugly head when Jimmy's cousin Tjohn Legere kills Jimmy and tries to pin it on Max, thinking that he will take over the mob. But Jimmy has willed everything to Max, who is smart and strong enough to take over, but at what cost to Detective Cee Cee?
Masked by Moonlight kicks off a new paranormal romantic suspense series and the introduces the pair who will star in the first three books. New Orlean's Homicide Detective Charlotte Caissie, who's life is all about the job, is on case where the victims are savaged and torn apart. Her investigation brings her in close proximity with the local mob boss's enforcer, the dark and strangely compelling Max Savoie. And soon Charlotte finds herself unable to keep her distance and falling for Max even though she has good reason to believe that he just may be the killer that she seeks.
I can totally understand why the reviews for Masked by Moonlight were mixed. A dyed in the wool cop dating a murder subject and suffering no professional repercussions for indulging in such a conflict of interest and the fact that a murderer - one capable of extreme savagery - was a leading man did give me pause at times. But I still liked the book despite its flaws and what made the book for me was Max.
Yes, not entirely human Max has the potential for a thoughtless brutality, but he is also protective, sensual, loyal, almost submissive with his boss/father-figure, naive, and hopeful - desperately wanting love but sure that no one can love him. Without these vulnerabilities Max, the mobster's enforcer would not be a very sympathetic character but Max does inspire sympathy and it is this odd mix which calls to Charlotte and causes her to fall for this totally inappropriate man. Charlotte is far more difficult to like, she does not trust easily, and really is quite clueless when it comes to personal relationships. She thinks like a cop first and even as she develops feeling for Max, those feelings are mixed in with figuring how she can use Max to extract revenge. If it weren't for Max's admiration for Charlotte, and his unwavering devotion to her, it would be hard to hope that Charlotte could some how open up enough to give Max the love that he so hopelessly craves.
Both Charlotte and Max are damaged and there is a desperate intensity to their couplings which makes the joinings quite steamy - even though the scenes aren't drawn out or very explicit. With their pasts and their futures getting in the way, the relationship between the pair is not easy on any level and while their explosive chemistry keeps pulling them back together despite hurt and mistrust, it's going to take some major concessions to bridge the gulf between their worlds. I am glad that I get a few more books to see how they possibly can get their HEA. The series continues in Chased By Moonlight and then Captured by Moonlight.
Orginally reviewed at My Devastating Reads I think the first thing that drew me was the writing. It's beautiful, powerful and just a delight to read. You can see the action in your mind like you would on a movie screen, it's that vivid. And it's raw and moving enough that you can feel it all too--the conflicting emotions, the tension, drama, the pain and heartache. That's the kind of romance I love.
Max: I think I expected more of a traditional bad boy--cock sure and sweetly arrogant. What we get instead is a very vulnerable, good hearted man. It was hard to watch his trust broken and his world crumble down around his ears, and know that Max had no one in the world. He is truly alone, except for Cee Cee. He doesn't even own the clothes on his back. And his pain, which we witness several times throughout the course of the novel, really demonstrates his childlike nature, how fragile he is because he's placed all his trust in one man. The wrong man. As you read this, you just want what's best for Max and you want someone in the world to shield him from everyone that has used him. But as vulnerable as Max is, he comes into his own in the most incredible way. He somehow shields himself from the world--and although you always knew Max had that in him, watching him come into his kind of blows you away.
Cee Cee: What a complicated character! And I was so frustrated with her at first, but by the end I really loved her. She's sassy and strong and just the right kind of edgy for Max. She has a sweet, vulnerable side as well, but she never hesitates to kick ass, never hesitates to enforce the law--even at the expense of her own heart, Max. I felt like I should have been angry with her by that point in the novel, but I wasn't because I knew how much she loved Max and how much it was tearing her apart to be living with one foot in two worlds. And I had to admire that she kept protecting Max as far as she could each time he came to her, that she wanted to protect him and listened to her heart, and not her head.
Two great characters, a telling raw romance and a great start to the series. I can't wait to find out more about Max and his world, and to see how he and Cee Cee manage their personal and business affairs in the future. No matter how that plays out, I know it'll be a great read because Max is just that kind of character--the kind you just can never have enough of.
While this book started out strong, it didn't continue without issues for me. Detective Charlotte (Cee Cee) Caissie is a member of New Orleans homicide team. She's working on a case in which bodies have had their throat and heart ripped out. She has a suspect in mind but proving it is another thing. My first issue with this is the crime seems to be glossed over. If something like this occurred, newspaper would run amuck with stories, and the people would 1) be scared out of their minds 2) demand answers from those who sworn to protect them. It seems minor but the procedural element in this book fell short for me.
Then there's the MC, Max and Cee Cee. I liked them but their relationship didn't burn off the pages. Yes the heat was there but there's more to romance than just sex. While Max character seems like an alpha male at times, other times, he's lead by someone else on a leash, figuratively speaking. Max has been manipulated ever since his mom died and he's taken in by crime boss Jimmy Legere (who's also the man Cee Cee is going after). This is where I can understand why Max seeks out love and acceptance because very few know who and what he is. Max can turn from dangerous to what I call, childlike behavior the next. I can sort of understand that as his mental well being has been affected. Not knowing his father and losing his mother at a young age still affects him. Even though Jimmy regards him as family, it isn't in any sense as Max is used time and time again to do his bidding.
Cee Cee, on the other hand, seems to run hot and cold, which bugged me quite a bit and I felt bad for Max. The other issue I had is where was her supervisor in all this? Crimes are happening yet there seems to be no control over anything. No one is being held accountable for their actions. The only voice of logic was Cee Cee's partner. Again, may seem minor but I need to believe it!
There were some interesting and revealing moments, but there were also moments where it plateaued out. I get that this is a paranormal romance, but in order for me to buy in to the story, other elements should be plausible.
As these two characters story spans 4 books, I will continue on, but I'm hoping there's much more character progression as well. I do like the way Ms Gideon writes, it's just the execution that left me wanting more in this one.
This is hard to review because it is not what I expected. This is more a 3rd person POV UF with a relationship of long standing changing into something more. Does the relationship dominate, no it doesn't though it is a big part of how the investigation and storyline proceeds. The two main characters having a relationship is quite impossible yet they do and from a long time back though Cassie (aka Cee Cee, Charlotte) finds this out in the first part of the book as she didn't remember.
Max has been raised, controlled, and shaped by a crime lord. He is the muscle and totally devoted to his adoptive father. Cee Cee is a police investigator. She has a feeling where Max is concerned and thinks he is better than the man he works for. She blames the man Legere, for things that happened in her past and want to shut him away for life. This doesn't make for an easy relationship to build between the characters but it does. I believe Max has a bond like obsession for the officer and as Cee Cee learns more of her past, she realizes that she is connected to him on a fundamental level.
The case of Legere, Max's controller, and what the past tells the future has many twists and turns and is very interesting. Much is revealed and resolved. Exactly where the relationship is and can go, is not. To me a romance has either a happily ever after or happy for now, other than the tragic ones though this is none of those. This was about the crime and investigation and where both of the characters belong, there are twists and turns and it is interesting. We are left wondering how their lives as they are, he as a person in a crime sindacate and she as a police detective can move on after the changes that occur here. From the description of the next, they have more investigations to test their relationship and jobs.
Well hell...I'm going to continue this series...and it's going to make me crazy with the angst of it all. I'm still not liking Cee Cee much, but I do already love Max...such a sucker for the tortured hero am I. For most of this first installment, the only character I liked was Max...the others were just mercilessly using him (including Cee Cee). In a surprising twist, the ending has Max taking control of his destiny from the users. Time will tell if the cop and criminal can co-exist. It promises to be a wild ride.
It's rare that I would give 5 stars to the first book in a series, but I absolutely loved this! Looking forward to reading much more about Max and CeeCee.
Update, Jan 2018...just as good the second time around (might be the third...)! I just love the interplay between Max and Charlotte...the sexual tension is palpable. And when they do come together...hot, hot, hot!
Another great book in this series and i become more and more addicted to Max. I must admit it wasn't as good as the first one but still a good read. I loved it. My main reason not to give 5 stars was the heroine Cee Cee and her over thinking everything and don't trust Max as he did with her.
I didn't care for the heroine. I kept thinking I'd start liking her more but that never happened. Then I thought maybe the romance will make up for it. Nope. I started skimming ahead hoping the book would get better, nope. Then read the last few pages and am kind of glad that I didn't waste my time. No rating because I couldn't finish it.
Charlotte is a detective in New Orleans. A rubbish one but that's ok because the murder mystery doesn't amount to much anyway. Max is the bodyguard of the underworld crime king and he has been in love with Charlotte for years. Cue much angst and drama.
The setting of New Orleans is massively underused. I understand that New Orleans is an unusual city with a distinctive style and atmosphere but this could have been set anywhere. The story outside of Charlotte and Max's relationship starts with potential but gets lost in all the romance drama.
There isn't one scene that Charlotte and Max don't end up together in, talking and flirting. Normally with Urban Fantasy, I get annoyed because the love interests spend so little time together so you'd think I should have liked this. But, I don't know why, it just got too much, even for me. I think it was done at the expense of building Charlotte's world and so it all feels very limited.
Max is a sweetheart and my heart breaks for him the way he's head over heels and just wants to be with Charlotte. For a character that's supposed to be a hardened killer, he seems like just a big softie. He carries the whole book and I read it really just for him.
Charlotte is independent and fun to read but also she's kinda mean and closed off. She has her reasons but Max is such a sympathetic character and it's easy to forget he's a killer so it makes it hard to like Charlotte when she is so cruel to him.
The writing is average, there are some dodgy bits here and there but it's not offputting and it's a fun and easy read. There are 10 books in the series though so hopefully it will improve as it goes on!
I intend to read the next one, all the setup has been done so I'm hoping for a bit of a more in-depth story. If not I'll be quite happy with just reading another book with a lot of Max in it!
Masked by Moonlight is a fun, quick Urban Fantasy romance read with a likeable and very sweet love interest!
"Oh baby," she purred, her hand stroking the gear shift in a way that made him go all hot and cold. " I like things that are fast, dangerous, and wickedly sexy," she crooned, then grinned at Max. "That's why I like you."
Charlotte Caissie is a police detective based in New Orleans, and is on the hunt for the man who almost killed herself and her close friends, and who is responsible for the murder of her father. And the one man who is her link to Legere is Max Savoire, but matters between herself and Max are a bit complicated. They have a bit of intense history, and she knows she can't afford to trust him or let him melt the ice around her heart, because his only loyalty is to Legere. Max Savoire is much more than a man, and only two men known who he truly is, and one of them is Legere, who raised him. After his mother was murdered, he stayed by her side and protected her from any who threatened him. Legere found him after days of hunger and exhaustion, and took him into his home, gave him shelter and taught him everything he knows. Legere is more like a father to him, and trusts him even though he knows that Legere has done some evil acts. When he finds himself clashing with Charlotte, he finds that his loyalties are starting to split. He doesn't know who he really is anymore, and whom he can trust his heart and soul to. Will it be the only father he has ever known or the one woman who hold his heart?
This is not the first time I have read Masked By Moonlight. I bought this book when it first came out a few years ago, right around the time I first started blogging, but for some reason, I didn't do a review for it. I don't know why, so after reading a book by this author, Prince Of Shadows, lately I have been wanting to read this series, and I thought why not read the first book, so I can get a fresher look at the series and start from book one. The first four books are focused on this couple- Max and Charlotte, and this book is our first introduction to them. Masked By Moonlight is a story about a couple that has to fight and learn to trust and compromise even though they love each other to desperation. You see how they fight what they feel for the majority of the book, and you almost want to scream at them, and shout accept it already and just trust in each other. LOL However when does that ever happen right? The story begins with a act of violence and murder. Which sets the stage for the plot pretty well, with intensity and intrigue. Then you see Charlotte come into the scene to investigate, and has a run in with Max, and the story sets off.
Both of the characters are pretty strong willed, passionate and fighters. Usually I am a bit picky about my strong heroines. There are times I feel like the heroine comes off too strong, but I felt that Nancy Gideon put some balance to Charlotte. Even though she has been through some rough times, is a cop and detective, and has a tough shell, she also is tender hearted, and I liked seeing the softer side to her at times. For most of the story she is always fighting Max, and has ulterior motives, basically using sex to get to his boss, which is very underhanded, when Max genuinely wants her in his life. Honestly, I fell in love with Max from the beginning, and I couldn't help but be empathetic to his situation. Max doesn't know any other life than what Legere has shown him. Max is a werewolf shifter, and believes himself to be the only one. We see the introduction of a were clan, and you see how the plot slightly changes, and I enjoyed seeing the way the relationship develops, as the plot thickens to the point of bursting.
Overall a stimulating paranormal romance that will set your teeth on edge from the first page. I fully recommend this to any lover of paranormal romance with a hint of suspense and intrigue and a sexy shifter, with a dark past. A fast page turner, with compelling characters, and a story to leave you breathless!!! WORTH EVERY MOMENT!!!
If you enjoy Paranormal romance, then this is the series for you. The only thing I have to compare it to are Nalini Singh's Psy/Changling series and Lora Leigh's Breed series. The biggest complement I can give the series is it reminded me a lot of Nora Roberts In Death series featuring Eve and Roake.
I first noticed book 2 Chased by Moonlight at the grocery story. Hellz ya it's got a hot cover...rippling, sweaty back muscles, ripped white shirt and some claw marks...flip to Chapter 1, Page 1 for a little preview....Okaaaay you now have my attention.
Whatever you are selling Ms. Gideon, I am buying. Sold! Or it would have been except after I read the back cover, I quickly realized that this was book 2 in the series and I just knew this was one series I was going to want to read in order and enjoy from the beginning...and it was the right decision.
One of the reasons I found this book (and the series) so appealing was that this story took place in current day New Orleans. There were no underworlds or mythical beings with names I couldn't pronounce or strange powers and no slimy disgusting creatures that made my skin crawl.
Cops and crime lords, hired muscle, grizzly murders and the hottest werewolf since True Blood's Alcide (yes he was who I imagined for Max while reading), Masked by Moonlight has it all.
Max Savoie and Charlotte "CeCe" Caissie have a wary, contemptuous, flirtatious association. She's a ball-bustin' homicide detective keeping the mean streets of New Orleans safe and Max is....well he's a lot of things including the hired muscle for a major crime boss Jimmy Legere and he's definitely CeCe's grade A prime piece of succulent beef suspect when bodies start piling up in the Big Easy murdered in a grizzly, inhuman way.
I could talk about Max for the rest of this review *swoon*. Man is he a Mr. Yummypants.
Max is definitely caught between a rock and a hard place in Masked by Moonlight. Max owes his entire existence to his crime lord boss and he's 100% loyal and devoted to the man who has been like a father to him since he was a young boy. But Max has definitely had Charlotte on his radar for a number of years. In fact, she owns Max's heart, but has no idea.
Max is one complicated alpha-dog - literally. Turns out he's a werewolf. When transformed he is ferocious and unstoppable, but Gideon also writes him with great child-like innocence and vulnerability depending on who he is interacting with in the storyline. You can not help but fall in love with this complex man as his heart wrenching background is revealed. It literally tugs at your heartstrings.
Cece is undeniably drawn to Max even though she knows she can't be; doesn't want to be; doesn't trust the man as far as she could toss him....and yet she is. She has MAJOR trust issues, but not without basis. Yet at times I did find myself frustrated with her and wanted to yell at her to give the man a break. I understood her trepidation with trusting the man, and I had some inside scoop about Max that she didn't have, so I cut her some slack.
I love the fact that Book 2 Chased by Moonlight (June 29, 2010)and Book 3 Captured by Moonlight (July 27, 20100 continue the story of Charlotte and Max because this is one Big MAX attack that you can never get your fill of.
Max is tall, dark, and handsome with a wolfish grin - literally. He also just so happens to serve as the muscle for mob boss, Jimmy Legere. Charlotte is your typical "good" cop out to discover her father's killer while ridding the streets of evil one creep at a time. Under any other circumstance, we probably wouldn't see these two having much to do with one another unless one was trying to kill the other. In Nancy Gideon's MASKED BY MOONLIGHT, however, we get to see them in an action packed story full of mystery and passion.
Charlotte and Max are a fun couple to read about. Charlotte is fairly relatable to your average female reader and I found following her to be pretty entertaining. Max is super attractive and definitely a guy we wouldn't mind getting to stare at over coffee. Put the two together and it's like Ms. Gideon created an explosion of romance on the pages. The chemistry between these two is definitely one of the highpoints to me, although I will say that at times it almost felt forced. The relationship between Max and Charlotte was thrown impossible curve balls and yet still they manage to overcome them. I'll be excited to see where Ms. Gideon takes these characters in the second book in the Moonlight Trilogy, Chased by Moonlight.
Aside from the romance, passion, and the never-ending question of what will happen in Max and Charlotte's relationship, the underlying mystery and drama of the book makes for a fantastic read. The story is complex, holding multiple layers of depth, without being overly so. It is very easy to follow, but not so simple that your mind gets lazy and sleepy. Max and Charlotte both have questions from their past and it seems that the answers converge. Is there more to the story than either of them know? Ms. Gideon leads us through the book, easily hooking us with dynamic characters and her development of the plot. She throws questions at us, gives us a few answers and then tosses more questions our way. There really isn't a single moment in MASKED BY MOONLIGHT that leaves the reader feeling bored and ready to jump ahead.
I recommend this to any Paranormal and Romance fans out there. The passion in MASKED BY MOONLIGHT is intense and beautifully written, while the paranormal aspect of it gives it that feeling of "other" that readers find so compelling nowadays. Ms. Gideon appears to have a great series in the works here and there's no telling what she has up her sleeve for us next.
A werewolf! In New Orleans! Organized crime! Ravaged murders! A werewolf in New Orleans as the muscle behind the success of organized crime leader Jimmy Legere. The book begins hard and heavy beginning with a loser leaving his wife to a buddy of his to have fun with for a few dollars so he can gamble and shortly after their savaged bodies are found and the wife and baby are gone. Cue Detective Charlotte "CeeCee" Caissie on the case. Charlotte has a deep seeded hatred towards Legere as he had her and her best friend kidnapped and tortured as a teenager to get to her dad, a detective himself but is later murdered. First stop in the investigation? Legere's. Now cue Max Savoie. Sexy. Lethal. Loyal. A dangerous triad. Now cue love. Sounds like the making of a GREAT story, right? Wrong! The author goes off from what begins as a great story right to a horrible love story and kind of throws the rest in as an after thought. CeeCee who is supposed to be tough, strong, and in control cries. A lot. Entirely too much for a strong woman. Not saying strong women aren't supposed to cry but every other scene (or so it feels is too much) and Max the loyal "dog" that he is, defies his "father" for love at first sight? Oh and let's not forget about STUPID, STUPID, and more STUPID acts by a supposedly intelligent detective who knows HOW she maintains her job while wearing Max's Armani, openly stands up for him at the police department, openly sleeping with him and cohorting at the compound? Come on! Seriously? She is supposedly "trying to get close to him" and not once did the police chief say a thing to her, but her partner does? Really??? It's just a very weak story.
I, for one, don't care to read another one in this series. Too many authors are just pumping out fantasy/paranormal romances just to fill the shelves without even "trying". They are just getting the elements in, a weak story line, a cover with a sexy hero/heroine and fill it up with a horrible romance. Sigh

As soon as I heard there was a werewolf book set in New Orleans I knew I had to read it! I had such high hopes for this book and to be honest, it left me feeling frustrated.
Charlotte (CeeCee) Caissie is a New Orleans detective - tough and sexy. Max Savoie is enforcer to the most powerful mobster in New Orleans. Through a series of murders, they are thrown together and can't fight their attraction to each other. They both know it will never work, but they can't seem to stay away from each other...
The premise of the story was good - A good cop in love with a mobster; I just couldn't "buy" it. The characters were inconsistent. CeeCee is supposed to be a tough ball-breaking cop, yet she cries several times through the book and I felt like her interactions with Max were hot and cold with no in-between. Max is at times portrayed as brilliant yet in the next scene he seems childlike and dull-witted. It felt like the characters were written to fit the storyline, if that makes any sense. Their relationship kind of followed the same pattern -they'd get together and say they loved each other, then jerk away and hurt each other while hiding behind their cop/mobster roles. I had a hard time liking CeeCee, even with her painful past. She was just not very likeable. Strangely enough, I liked Max when he was with CeeCee, but not when he wasn't.
I also thought the murder storyline was weak and sort of pushed aside for most of the book and brought back at the end to tie things up.
I do plan to read the 2nd book in the series, Chased by Moonlight, before I give the series a "yea" or "nay". I'm giving Masked by Moonlight 2.5/5 stars.
No hesitance to give this 5 stars ^^ Walaupun genre seri ini adalah paranormal, tapi lebih banyak unsur thriller suspensenya :-D
