I'm a former TV news anchor who know writes fiction for a living. I publish collections of sweet, sassy romantic short stories called Flirts! Bell Bridge books is publishing my Willowdale Romance Series. No Foolin' debuts November 25, 2012.
I got this free short story ebook today as I was browsing the internet looking for something quick and simple and something that would cheer me up since my youngest started school today.
I found "The Hot Girl's Friend," and absolutely adored this story. It's about two friends, your typical gorgeous, needs to be center of attention friend and the average looking friend who gets stuck alone when it comes to finding love.
This story not only made me laugh with the humor, but at times I found my blushing when Jane would blush. It was a quick read and wish it was a bit longer, but I found it quite enjoyable and I am looking forward to reading the other short stories by Lisa Scott.
Jane is Miranda's friend, and they are usually out together during their nights out. Jane helps fending off the men for Miranda, because she is gorgeous and every guy’s fantasy. With a hot girlfriend like Miranda, Jane wonders how is a girl like her suppose to find her happy ending.
THOUGHTS
Flirts! 5 Romantic Short Stories, is a small collection of stories by the author. Some of the books in the collections are free and the whole collection can be bought together.
This was such a cute and funny story. It almost had a feel and humor of the movie, 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’. And the title of the book says it all as well. Jane and Miranda are friends. Jane always plays wing-man to their nights out, while Miranda is on the prowl. Miranda is the six feet tall blond that's hard to miss in a bar or club, so, on a particular night out; Jane meets Brady, a bartender.
Brady was just such a nice guy, mixed with sexy and the guy next door description mentioned in the book. Jane, was just a regular girl who expect nothing when out with her friend. Their chemistry was fun and enjoyable to read. Brady took Jane out to prove she's hot, but selfishly derails her invites from guys interested in her. I have to applaud the witty excuses and humor in this book, it was the added bonus that made this book interesting. With Brady's derailing tactics, this leaves Jane, a little confuse because he doesn't seem the least bit interested in her. Though this book seems predictable, everything about this short novella was sweet, cute, funny, and even sexy.
I hardly write reviews about books I didn't like, but funny..today I feel inspired and actually have something to say about this short story. I will try to be as constructive as I can, cause though I'm rating it 1 star, it really doesn't mean the story completely sucked and that someone else won't like it. As I always say, reviews are subjective, so if you still feel like reading this story (even though you'll read this review) it's perfectly OK.
Ok, got that off my chest and now moving on with the review.
This is one of the 5 stories from the collection of short stories "Flirts!" by Lisa Scott. I really haven't heard of this author before and got this book cause of 2 main reasons: it was a freebie on Amazon, so I thought WHY NOT READ IT, and second the cover caught my eye.
I'm not much of a short stories fan, but despite it I thought it would be nice to discover a new author. It's a fast read, definitely, but from the very first page I didn't like it (which is something that rarely happens to me).
The story itself reminded me a lot of Something Borrowed and Something Blue by Emily Giffin. It's about two friends, Jane and Miranda who have a funny (at least according to me) relationship. And though I really loved Rachel and Darcy and forgave them about breaking the Rule No 1 in every girlfriend relationship, I just couldn't accept that Jane lives as Miranda's shadow.
Somewhere around the middle of the story I found out about the real reasons behind their strange relationship and why is Jane so overprotective, but NOPE, I just couldn't swallow it. Maybe I would enjoy the story more if the author concentrated more on explaining Jane and Miranda's friendship instead of describing how gorgeous Miranda is (and how plane Jane is).
So, I really wanted to like this story, from reading the blurb I thought it would be a fun read. But...how do I put this politely..it just wasn't for me!
Reread: 11/3/17 - My initial review remains the same, but I seem to have enjoyed the story much more this time around, as I was planning to give it 5-stars. It could be, however, the fact that I haven't read anything that was not either school or work-related since May! I blame the euphoria of reading for fun!! Therefore, I'll just bump the rating up to a 4.
Original Review Cliched and predictable - yes! Adorable, sweet, and even a little bit heartwarming - Absolutely.
You can probably tell this story by the title alone, and most certainly by the blurb/synopsis, but it was a cute read anyway. While Jane's self-deprecating manner was on the annoying side, there really wouldn't have been a (short) story without it. Plus, her razor-sharp wit, when it came to repelling undesirables, made up for her self-doubt and added a chuckle or two as well.
**This short story was a promotional freebie on Amazon for a short story collection called Flirts!**
This story was the perfect short read. I could feel the chemistry between the hero and heroine right away with the banter flying back and forth. The author managed to tell a complete story without making it feel like she was cutting corners to stay within a certain word count. The romance was sweet (translation: no sex scenes) without pretending that the characters didn't ever think about sex. I will definitely be checking out more of Lisa Scott's short stories when I want a quick romance break.
I found this short story on Amazon kindle. This was a rather fun sweet short story, I loved the relationship between Jane and Miranda, it definitely defines true girl pals! Even though it was quiet predictable I still found it fun to read, it flowed well, had fun characters that you could relate to in some ways! It is a good read if you have a bit of spare time to cram in a book
SUPER short but sweet and just what I wanted to read tonight. The romance was adorable but if the heroine is actually plain, or plump, or whatever her undescribed characteristics that made her pale in comparison to her friend Miranda, then I feel like this sweet piece of fluff is getting my hopes up. Men like this are just not real.
Great little story. I find Jane to be quite interesting. And Brady seems to be an okay kind of guy. Together, their insecurities make for some interesting exchanges.
I do like the concept of this story. The girl who thinks she’s “just the hot girls friend” when actually she herself is worth finding the love too. I do often have issues with the “other girl” trope because whilst it is highly realistic sometimes I think the story does a disservice to the girls who feel like this but this book covered the topic well I felt. The story felt a little rushed but not enough to ruin the story and this does come from the fact it is a novella length story
“The Hot Girl’s Friend,” A Short Story by Lisa Scott
As a woman, it’s only natural to compare ourselves to other women. Whether we’re pretty, tall, or skinny, there’s always someone prettier, taller, and skinnier. Ergo, it’s completely natural to hate the existence of this other woman. But what if the other woman is your best friend?
Meet Jane. Jane is a successful veterinarian, prankster, and the perfect girl-next-door. Enter Miranda: Jane’s gorgeous, six-foot-tall blonde bombshell best friend. Wherever they go, guys flood Jane wanting to know if the “model” is single. Eager to have a little fun and given Miranda’s blessing, Jane is keen to make up as many ridiculous stories as possible in a single night to deter the man-traffic from her best friend, as well as scope out the decent guys. All is well and good until a hot bartender catches Jane in the act and questions her methods. Suddenly, geeky Jane is forced to explain her methods and her past to sweet and sensitive Brady, all while trying to keep her head about her. When Brady and Jane strike a bet to see if Jane is capable of getting a date, both must cope with their developing feelings and fight off their eager friends to find a happy medium with each other.
Written by Lisa Scott, a former TV news anchor turned short story author, “The Hot Girl’s Best Friend” is a great embodiment of female roles and relationships, and makes a great little short love story read if you’re in the mood. It’s everything we learn to love about young adult fiction: romance, denial, and a hot best friend who’s probably going to die from some disease….Or something like that. Regardless, it’s short, to the point, and easy to read. However, I do wish the story was a little longer. I felt like the relationships between the characters developed too fast for a real love story. Part of the allure of a good love story is that maybe the characters’ relationship will last longer than Britney Spears’ first marriage. However, if you’ve met and have started dating a total stranger who knows where you live and stalks you at work, I don’t anticipate a lasting relationship. As a hopeless romantic, this saddens me.
I recommend this story for those who love love stories, those who love short stories, and those who just want to read a quick story for a pick me up.
This sassy short story packed a fun punch. It is the second one I've read by Lisa Scott and I just love what she can do with a short story format.
Jane is the consummate best friend of the beautiful vivacious girl. Jane's got her own looks and sparkle going on, but she can't see it and feels constantly eclipsed by her friend. While out together at a bar, Jane is doing her job helping to fend off unwanted guys from Miranda, when she finds herself enjoying the time spent with the bartender, Brady. He's fun and helps her and better yet, he doesn't seem to want Miranda.
Brady sets out on a quest to show Jane that she's got what it takes to get a guy by taking her bet that he can't find someone nice who wants to date her. Jane takes that bet and starts out on this new venture with Brady. She could have told him that no guys would measure up because he was around, but she is afraid to find out for sure that he really is only being friendly.
As I said, this was a fun read. Jane is the narrator and it is obvious from the get-go to the reader that she isn't catching onto the clues well when it comes to Brady. It was cute to discover that the flirtatious Miranda isn't as shallow as she seems. I really enjoyed watching how Jane and Brady's chemistry worked so well.
It was a fun, feel-good happy read that I recommend to someone to fill a nice little slot in their busy day.
So this is the second story I've read by Lisa Scott, and thus far 100% of her heroines have been self-conscious women unhappy with their appearances who have seemingly no issue whatsoever judging men by how *they* look. But, since this story obviously (I mean, look at the cover) has no intention of taking itself seriously, I'll let that one slide. I mean, nobody is trying to make a political statement here, right?
THE HOT GIRL'S FRIEND is about Jane, your everyday average single woman, whose best friend Miranda is a 6 foot blonde stunner that every man on earth wants to date. Jane pretty much spends her social life making up extravagant, disturbing, and entertaining excuses to strangers about why they shouldn't seek a date with Miranda, who has no interest in men without good looks, fancy accents, and money in the bank.
One day a bartender overhears one of Jane's triumphant speeches to deter the onlookers from her BFF and he's intrigued by her spunk. He decides to set her up on a date with one of his friends -- which would be all well and good if Jane weren't semi-interested in the bartender himself.
It's goofy and cheesy and weird, but I can't deny that it was a fun little read. Just keep your expectations realistic and you won't be disappointed. (Especially if it's still free when you get it, right?)
This is what a short romance is supposed to be. The chemistry is very believable because it doesn't rely in insta-love (or even insta-lust.) It doesn't hurt that I love that the less-than-gorgeous wing-girl gets the guy.
Stumbled upon this free short story accidentally while browsing iTunes store and thought why the hell not. A funny, light and quick read. Exactly what one would expect after reading the synopsis. Witty characters, hilarious dialogue, lil bit of drama, fluffy romance and tons of fun overall. Not to mention very likable characters. The protagonist, Jane, is a cynical bitch, sorta. With a gorgeous crazy best friend. One night, she meets one very cute bartender with amazing dimples (well, according to the protagonist, at least...). And they make a bet about setting Jane up with someone during the next three weeks. Needless to say, things don't go as planned. All in all, this story is all about cute romance, adorable friendship and likable characters. What else one could wish for?
The Premise Can the Plain Jane finally get the guy?
Jane is the friend of Miranda, the hot girl who Jane protects by fending off the unwanted advances of random guys, never being seen for her own attractions until she meets Brady, the bartender who overhears her outrageous stories to get rid of said guys.
The Good Surprising little novella that really worked for me because it took the time to develop the H/h attraction through showing vs. telling, my fave kind. Dialogue was good, the chemistry was there between them.
The Minor Quibble About the only irksome thing is Jane not realizing that Brady’s attracted to her.
The Bottom Line It’s a good story and I really liked it. I’d definitely keep an eye out for more from Ms. Scott.
Short, sweet and predictable romantic story about a girl who has a best friend who is 6ft, blonde, and the the kind of girl who gets all of the male attention. Only thing is, this blonde girl is picky. Her friend, who considers herself less attractive, fends off guys all the time who are asking her about her friend, and makes up excuses to get them to leave her alone. The two girls then have a fun time laughing about the silly stories made up later on.
The "less attractive" girl finds out that not all boys are only into looks, as she stereotypically believes, and a guy she meets in a bar sets out to prove this to her.
The Hot Girl's Friend is a short story about twenty-something plain Jane. Her best friend is a tall, curvy blond who is used to having (and stealing) all the attention from the so-called less attractive girls like Jane. After befriending a cute bartender and making a bet, she soon discovers that she may not be as plain as she thought she was.
This short story is a fun, easy read. It's both witty and charming, a great addition to the chick-lit/romance genre. The dialogue flows well, and the characters are believable. I definitely connected with the story, and my attention never wavered. I can't wait to read her other stories.
Miranda is a 6 foot tall leggy blond most guys are (literally) falling for. Miranda is only looking for a "no strings attached" hook up. Jane Jameson is the 5'4 witty brunette, Miranda's bestfriend, her wingman who's always on "the sideline".
Tonight at McGinty's is no different. As Miranda is constantly surrounded by admirers. Jane watches from the side where she meets bartender Brady Flynn. No doubt, there was an instant connection. Jane is attracted to Brady but assumes Brady is interested in Miranda.
I enjoyed this short, delightful read of two people who eventually realized that sometimes, life might just surprise you!
Flirts! 5 Romantic Short Stories by Lisa Scott 1 - The Hot Girl's Friend Jane Jameson feels like plain Jane next to her tall, blonde, bombshell friend, Miranda. So why bother trying to get a guys attention when they go out, instead she sends the guys away with unique stories about her friend when they go to the hotties friend to get close to her. She just can’t believe that Brady, the bartender at McGinty’s Bar, is really is not interested in her friend. And challenges her to spend time with him without Miranda to prove she is just as pretty and desirable. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
This was a very short story. However, it was perfect for what I needed. Overall flow was good. The author did a great job of connecting the two leads without having to lay waste to an entire forest. It didn't quite get to my normal level of sexy but the comedy was just my type of sarcastic dry humor. And most importantly, it was one for the little guy... or gal. With me trying to shorten my long list of freebees and other waiting unread titles in my eBook library, the current rate being 1 read to 6 added daily, this was a great little accomplishment... of sorts.
