As Patrick and his older brother Hank rake leaves one autumn day in this follow-up to Patrick's Dinosaurs , the younger boy asks where the dinosaurs went. Discontented with the traditional theories put forward by Hank, Patrick imagines that dinosaurs once peacefully co-existed with humanity, building all sorts of infrastructure and amenities for people. Finally getting tired of doing all the work, the dinosaurs left Earth in a spaceship, and humanity slipped back into pre-historic ignorance, forgetting their time with these ancient giants...

Like its predecessor, What Happened to Patrick's Dinosaurs pairs a fun, entertaining text from author Carol Carrick with immensely engaging artwork from illustrator Donald Carrick - a husband-and-wife team that worked together on many books. It taps into the childhood fascination with dinosaurs, and explores the important role that games of make-believe play in the lives of the young. I appreciated the fact that this particular game of make believe occurred while the boys were doing their chores - in this case, raking the leaves - as this highlights how playing pretend can permeate every aspect of a child's life. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for fun, dinosaur-related stories that are heavier on the imagination, than on the facts.

This is the second book I have read that puts forth the theory that dinosaurs built spaceships and went into space...I wonder if I should call Coast to Coast and bring this up! Seriously - great 'dino-book' for kids.

One of the few sequels to picture books that I think may be even better than the first. Patrick explains HIS version of what really happened to the dinosaurs to his older brother. Great story, great illustrations. Again, a favorite of my oldest son.

This book devastated me emotionally as a kid (though in a good way...). There's something so poignant about the idea that we humans lost a paradise of sorts in an earlier time, isn't there? This is a sort of Garden of Eden myth for secular children.

oooooh! My son is a dinosaur lover and can I just say this is a very cute book. It's funny and children can really let their imagination go wild when reading it. I love, "Dinosaurs got tired of doing all the work, so they built a big spaceship and left." This could be a fun read aloud for grades k-2.

This is a cute follow-up to the predecessor, "Patrick's Dinosaurs". Both of the books meld imagination and fact well, and show an older brother's indulgence and reassuring presence all at once. I loved the illustrations - they seem like simple drawings at first, but upon closer review, they are very whimsical and Seussian. Patrick asserts his version of history in delightful and interesting ways - dinosaurs building humans houses, teaching them a variety of skills, willingly leaving earth in a giant spaceship when they felt mistreated. Confession - I quite like Patrick's version better than the asteroid version!

Patrick and his brother, Hank, are raking leaves. Looking into the sky Patrick sees dinosaurs in the clouds. He tells Hank his theory of the dinosaur's demise. Patrick thinks that long ago dinosaurs and people were friends. The dinosaurs built houses for the people. When they got hungry, they knocked down trees and planted bananas which they always shared with the people. The dinosaurs made wind-up cars, airplanes, and roads for the people. They put on shows when the people (who weren't doing anything) got bored. Finally, the dinosaurs got tired of doing all the work. They built a big spaceship and flew away. The people, who didn't have anyone to take care of them, became cave men. Every so often the dinosaurs come back to check on the people; their spaceships are the shooting stars.

I would read this book to a third or fourth grade classroom about a unit on fossils and dinosaurs. It's a fun book to read to students about different types of dinosaurs that existed before.
