Northern New Jersey has a new local hero on its cultural crime turf. He's Andy Carpenter, the Paterson defense attorney who can sling a quip as fast as he can outmaneuver a snarling prosecutor. Acclaimed author David Rosenfelt's first novel, was nominated for an Edgar Award, now in this new novel, the intrepid lawyer is thrust into the spotlight where he risks becoming a media victim...of the most fatal kind. His streak of murder case acquittals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named the Tara Foundation after his own beloved golden retriever. Yet after turning down cases left and right, Andy Carpenter thinks he's facing a midlife crisis. When a friend, a newspaper owner, calls in a favor and asks him to protect his star reporter, Andy is less than thrilled. His new client is Daniel Cummings, a journalist who is being used as a mouthpiece by a brutal serial killer. Things only get worse when Daniel is discovered near the body of the murderer's latest victim. And after Andy himself starts collecting anonymous death threats, he hears the news every defense lawyer dreads...and moves to within a dangerous keystroke of becoming tomorrow's obituary.
I have gotten to this dubious position with absolutely no planning, and at no stage in my life could I have predicted it. But here I am.
My childhood was relentlessly normal. The middle of three brothers, loving parents, a middle-class home in Paterson, New Jersey. We played sports, studied sporadically. laughed around the dinner table, and generally had a good time. By comparison, "Ozzie and Harriet's" clan seemed bizarre.
I graduated NYU, then decided to go into the movie business. I was stunningly brilliant at a job interview with my uncle, who was President of United Artists, and was immediately hired. It set me off on a climb up the executive ladder, culminating in my becoming President of Marketing for Tri-Star Pictures. The movie landscape is filled with the movies I buried; for every "Rambo", "The Natural" and "Rocky", there are countless disasters.
I did manage to find the time to marry and have two children, both of whom are doing very well, and fortunately neither have inherited my eccentricities.
A number of years ago, I left the movie marketing business, to the sustained applause of hundreds of disgruntled producers and directors. I decided to try my hand at writing. I wrote and sold a bunch of feature films, none of which ever came close to being actually filmed, and then a bunch of TV movies, some of which actually made it to the small screen. It's safe to say that their impact on the American cultural scene has been minimal.
About fourteen years ago, my wife and I started the Tara Foundation, named in honor of the greatest Golden Retriever the world has ever known. We rescued almost 4,000 dogs, many of them Goldens, and found them loving homes. Our own home quickly became a sanctuary for those dogs that we rescued that were too old or sickly to be wanted by others. They surround me as I write this. It's total lunacy, but it works, and they are a happy, safe group.
After starting listening to this series at #23 “Dog Eat Dog”, I’m now working my way through the series!!
I thought this was the most intricately plotted of the 3 books that I’ve listened to!!
It begins when Andy, who is a lawyer who hates “lawyering” gets involved in yet another case. He doesn’t need the money, he just inherited 22 million dollars!! He also is riding the wave of popularity after putting away two criminals and winning hard fought cases. He is a happy man!!!!!!!! Working with his buddy on their dog rescue center, The Tara Foundation (named for his beloved Golden Retriever)
Andy talks like he’s a tough guy but when his friend Vince Sanders, owner of a newspaper, asks for help protecting one of his journalists he gives in. Daniel has been the only journalist that a serial killer will talk to and Vince is worried that he will become a target???
At first Andy thinks this will be an easy job, Daniel Cumming is a star reporter and knows his way around a courtroom.
The case seemed to be closed at one point, but I just knew there was more to come. There is, but I won’t tell you because it will ruin the read. It’s a very good twist and certainly not one I saw coming.
Great mystery that I enjoyed puzzling out with another wonderful narration by Grover Gardner who seems a perfect fit for this character.
I can recommend it to all mystery readers and of course, DOG LOVERS !!
I would have interviewed Andy Carpenter for this review, except that according to him:
My interviews would be better suited to the E! Network, providing “E” stands for “evasive”. Or maybe the Sleep Channel, if there is one. What I should have done was brought Tara [his Golden Retriver] and gone on Animal Planet.
Once again, with his witty humour intact, David Resenfelt has managed to write a mystery/thriller/police procedural/courtroom drama novel that is witty and intensely suspenseful at the same time. I can’t talk about any of the plot without spoilers, but I will say that just when you think everything has fallen apart, suddenly there’s a win only somehow that falls apart, too, and things look bleak once again. Then . . . well, I’m sure you get the idea.
This one is like being on a really fast roller coaster – and it’s a fun, entertaining ride!!
This has become one of my favorite series. It has a good mix of mystery and humor, where the humor seems to fit in better than some other similar books, and it's not usually silly, show-off humor that distracts from the story, but just makes everything more fun and interesting. Some of his jokes are really good, and delivery is natural so they almost aren't noticed if you don't pay attention - the best kind, I think.
I thought the story was very interesting and complex. I'm overjoyed that there are close to 20 more books in the series.
****6/21/24**** Another satisfying read by David Rosenfelt! I really like the humorous banter vibe that Rosenfelt infuses the Andy Carpenter with, and I also like getting to know the same cast of characters even better with each novel. There is what feels like a serious legal angle to the books without them being dark or violent, and there is enough focus on the social relationships between the main players that it keeps you engaged and makes you keep caring for them. I didn't find the newspaper owner or the murder suspect as compelling as the core plots in books #1 or 2, so I'm giving this 4-stars. The audiobook narration is excellent, and easily understood at 1.5X.
****6/19/24 **** Just started the audiobook for #3 in this series; thank you Los Angeles Public Library. Love walking/doing mindless tasks with "lighter" audiobooks like this, that use the same cast of characters, so you form an understanding of who they are, and can kind of relax into reading them, like you're with old friends. I find it a great series, and am glad there are so many I can explore over time.
This is a Legal Mystery, and this is the third book in the Andy Carpenter series. I have to say I had trouble getting into the beginning of this book. I found the middle ok. The ending was good. I do love the characters of this book series, and this was no difference. I just did not love the mystery in this book, but I did not hate it either.
BURY THE LEAD (Legal Thriller-New Jersey-Cont) – VG Rosenfelt, David – 3rd book Mysterious Press, 2004- Hardcover Defense attorney Andy Carpenter inherited $22 million so working isn’t something he has to do. But when a serial killer is murdering woman and cutting off their hands, Daniel Cummings, a local reporter and son of one of Andy’s friends, is arrested for the murders. Andy doesn’t believe he’s guilty and, with the help of friends and colleagues, is out to find the killer while defending Daniel. *** I’m not quite certain why, but I keep seeing shades of Robert Parker in Rosenfelt’s books. Perhaps because Andy is quick with a quip and Rosenfelt writes very good dialogue. Perhaps because Andy loves his dog and thinks it’s the most perfect dog in the universe, even though it’s not quite as annoying as Spencer’s Pearl the Wonder Dog. Perhaps because Andy has a serious love interest to whom he’s not married, although, happily, Laura doesn’t have any of Susan’s annoying characteristics. But Rosenfelt is no imitation and definitely stands on his own. He has created some great characters and yet isn’t afraid to kill off important characters. He knows how to balance humor and tension. The tone of the book is light, but it contains a whopping good, unpredictable mystery. I’ve really been enjoying this series and am really looking forward to continuing with the series
A pretty typical courtroom drama that I love to read. I like the characters. There is just the right amount of wise-assness and wit to the affable protagonist's take on the world that I was willing to embrace his take on his legal profession, views of the mob, charity, police, love, and dogs. I end up liking the guy. Virtually all of the other characters are rich in supporting ways from his low-key love interest to his buddy that answers his questions in song lyrics. I caught myself laughing out loud several times while reading this book. A funny story, Great Dialog, and a reasonably good plot.
You know a book is good when you are laughing out loud throughout the novel.
I love Andy Carpenter. Andy is really good at being a defense attorney, however he isn't a defense attorney very often as he has a very large inheritance and gets to pick and choose his cases.
Andy's friend, Vince (a newspaper owner) asks Andy to defend one of his reporters, Daniel. Daniel is a star reporter who keeps getting phone calls from a serial killer. After Daniel is found at the scene of the crime with evidence in his car and his apartment, he is charged. Andy is torn on whether or not Daniel is guilty since all signs point to Daniel committing the crime. Soon it's clear that Daniel is being set up and Andy and his team need to rush to figure out who is the killer.
Andy is hilarious. I'm always laughing at his courtroom humour and even his inner thoughts. I loved even the minor stuff like the coffee stock and how it was a running reference throughout the novel.
What makes this novel (and series) so great is that there is always a fantastic crime to figure out. I had so many suspects in my mind and of course I was wrong!
3.75 stars. Still enjoying this series although I wish it were a bit more gentle at times… but then it wouldn’t be a thriller. Great sense of humor, many smiles and laughs whenever I read one of these. Enjoying the recurring characters, although they don’t have the depth of some of the other crime series I read more for the characters than the crime. I read these mainly for the laughs 😀 Print and audio versions, both top-notch!
4 Stars for Bury the Lead: Andy Carpenter, Book 3 (audiobook) by David Rosenfelt read by Grover Gardner.
It looks like Andy Carpenter is having to defend someone who could be a serial killer this time. But it also seems like he has mob ties too. It’s definitely not a straight forward case. And then another murder is committed. Who is doing the killing?
There is lots to enjoy with Rosenfelt's book featuring Andy Carpenter, a millionaire attorney. I like the wry humor--it reminds me of Lawrence Block's "Burglar" series. It's a good mystery with several unusual characters. I'm glad there is more of this series to enjoy!
Rosenfelt has a winner with this series. His lead characters, Andy Carpenter & Laurie, are a stitch and this murder mystery/courtroom drama is well plotted and exciting. The surprise ending is also well hidden and a nice finish. Recommended.
An absolutely fun book, it is a quick read/listen and funny. I listened to this book at work and it was perfect backdrop for blocking people in the surrounding cubes and still being able to follow the story. Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter is a defense attorney in NJ, has a bit of Colombo-type underdog in him but with a dry, witty humour that had me chuckling out loud at work.
The reader, Grover Gardner, is several levels above excellent. His Andy Carpenter has overtones of Andy Rooney (from 60 Minutes) and is funny, dry and intelligent.
As a dog lover, both Rosenfelt and Andy Carpenter, dogs are featured prominently in every book. Carpenter owns a Golden Retriever named Tara and started a dog rescue foundation called the Tara Foundation. Funny, so did the author. Carpenter works out many of his trial problems while walking his beloved Tara, whom he believes is going to live forever. Carpenter's pals and significant other are well drawn characters with normal names like Lori, Vince, Pete and fit right in with the NJ environment. It's easy to tell these people are friends as well as colleagues, no one is perfect, and all sling friendly barbs and quips with the ease of long practice. You instantly feel a part of this group and want to go hang out at Charley's (the local bar), watch a few games and place losing bets alongside Andy.
Bury the Lead - a good double entendre - has more plot twists than the other two books I've read in the Andy Carpenter series and gives Andy more heartburn than usual. Andy's friend, Vince, asks him to take the case of a reporter on his staff who is being used by a serial killer to taunt the police about the crimes. The serial killer calls the reporter to brag about the latest victim and tells him where to find them. Eventually the police suspect the reporter is the killer and now it gets interesting. The local mob gets dragged in much to Andy's regret since they are scary people and Andy is a coward. (His words, not mine.) Several twists later the real story is figured out and Andy's life is saved by ..... Well you'll just have to read it and find out.
I highly recommend this book and this series, they are totally fun and what some might consider a light, summer read. Although I honestly will prefer to listen to them since Mr. Gardner brings the characters to life in a way that suits the book and characters perfectly.
Another fun, short mystery that was well read & plotted. These are 'chip' books because I can't listen to just one. They're all pretty much the same, differing only in the details of the dilemma, but that doesn't mean they're not fun.
I liked it enough that I went looking for more books by this author & found out that the Tara Foundation, a dog rescue started in the last book, actually is a going concern run by the author. I have a book about it reserved & hope to listen to it soon.
Andy Carpenter is fast becoming one of my favorite characters. Still not keen on working overly hard after his windfall Andy reluctantly takes on the case of a friend. This is a well plotted book with some really interesting . These books are fun and interesting to read. I can hardly believe I only just heard about them.
I am trying to provide some different views on this series. I am at a loss. I really enjoy it for what it is. I love the narrator and the characters. I like the author's writing style. It is a great escape for me and I can't get the next one soon enough. I enjoy this series as much as I enjoy the women's murder club by patterson. Give it a try if you haven't read this one or that other series.
A solid 4 star read and adding 1 more for a great series and an author who has 37 dogs! I'm sure I'm the only one who is only on number 3 in this series - but for those who just came in from another planet- this is a fun, fun series to read..........!!!
A quick fun read. I love this series. As others described the main character, witty, he is. If you love legal thriller with humor, I highly recommend this series. Also good for dog lovers.
Another great court room drama with a good bit of mystery! I love these crime/drama series with great new plot in each book, along with wonderful constant set of characters that are in the heart of each book. Andy is a great sharp minded lawyer surrounded with lovely secondary characters that give the books this extra special addition. Andy is super funny and his internal conversations are hilarious. I do feel that sometimes the “funny” or the “sarcastic sense of humor “ of his is going a bit too far, but I love him!
My only complaint is that Andy, who is 38 years old in this book, sometimes sounds more like a 58 year old. I didn’t decide if it’s the writing of his character or the narrator. I still love it! Off to the next one.
Andy Carpenter is at loose ends when his friend who edits the local rag newspaper calls him. His star reporter is in a bit of a Mean Season relationship with a serial killer, and may need legal protection.
Soon enough, the reporter is arrested for the killings, after being found near a body, unconscious.
Audible. Complicated plot, lots of dead bodies .. Vince is very much a major figure in this story AND indirectly saves Andy from certain death (in Cleveland,Ohio) @ the end. Willie & Sondra meet & marry.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Another Andy Carpenter winner for me. Great storyline that kept me guessing until the very end. His recurring characters are all well flushed out and flow in the storyline effortlessly. Vince has asked for his help after the police arrest one of his reporters as a serial killer. It appears to be a setup but, why? Andy's personally and whit once again has me completely enthralled along with his relationships with recurring characters.
I continue to enjoy the persons of Andy Carpenter, Laurie and their friends. These are warm people who care about others and help.
As a side line, Andy is also a prosecuting attorney. It's a side line because he's rich and his main concern is helping people. He only helps those wrongly accused.
The mystery is well plotted and convoluted. The humour is there throughout and very entertaining. The characters, as I've said, are warm and friendly. It all comes together in a wonderfully readable and fun story.
I am slowly reading the Andy Carpenter books as I like the humor and easy read. Andy loves for dogs is shown throughout the series. I like is feelings about working. Marcus is an interesting character as all of them. In this case a serial killer is killing woman and cutting their hands off. Andy's client is the son of his friend Vince. Exploring the events Andy's team began to find some strange things happening. The ending will surprise you as it did me.
Lawyer Andy Carpenter is asked by his friend Vince to represent his paper and its star reporter who is being used as a messenger by a serial killer. Soon the reporter is arrested and goes on trial as the murderer and Andy will uncover a new batch of secrets. One of Rosenfelt's eary stories about Carpenter, this was a great mystery read.
This one was pretty good, twists, turns and surprises! This is the third book in the series - still waiting for First Degree to arrive from ThriftBooks! I am doomed to reading these out of order. I will stick with Andy and the team just to see what kind of a mess they get into next.
Most of my gripes are with the author: As usual a character named Daniel? He totally gives away the plot of Book #2 by references. Fingerprints from severed hands for ID purposes? Half of 600 million should satisfy anyone!
Perhaps it was me, but this book was a tad difficult to follow. In case you’re not familiar with this author, this book is the second in a series of 20plus books that feature defense attorney Andy Carpenter and his rescue dig, a golden retriever named Tara. Andy becomes involved defending a reporter who has been accused of murdering (and severing the hands) of 3 women. Somehow, the mob has its hands in the crime and this is when it becomes confusing. Despite that, the stories are a light romp through the world of criminal investigations and trial work.
Oh, I love this book. This author never fails to surprise me! I love this series and I can't wait to read the next one. I truly appreciate the fact that Rosenfelt is talented enough to write a legal suspense murder mystery without resorting to foul language.
In this 3rd book of the Andy Carpenter series, Andy is asked by his newspaper friend, Vince, to represent his newspaper and his journalist, Dan, when he is accused of being a serial killer. I also loved the parallel story of Rosalie and Eddie and the Tara Foundation dog rescue!
