Scary Godmother has come down with the terrible Boo Flu! Will Halloween come at all this year? Of course it will, thanks to her good friend, Hannah Marie! This plucky little girl bites off a bit more than she can chew when she bravely volunteers to become the substitute mistress of all things Spooky. Written in delightful rhyming prose - whimsical fun for readers of all ages!
Jill Thompson is an American comic book writer and illustrator. Probably best known for her work on Neil Gaiman's Sandman characters and her own Scary Godmother series, she has also worked on The Invisibles, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman and more recently, Beasts of Burden.
There are quite a few different Scary Godmother books by Jill Thompson, as well as some produced when the character was under license to a large company. Stick with Jill's. The one we started with was a big black and white compendium that took forever to get through, though my son was fine with that and stayed interested. The Boo Flu is more accessible for younger kids, and in color, focused on Scary Godmother's friend Hannah. S.G. gets sick and little girl Hannah tries to take over her Halloween duties, only to realize that it's a LOT of work! Perfect for kids who love that Halloween spirit.
I like this one much more than the original Scary Godmother story, which seemed a little old and scary for the very young protagonist it involved. Wasn't quite sure how old she thought her audience should be for that book. But this one is sillier with it's spooky bits and comes off more believably for children (and Halloween-loving adults like ME!).
"She crocheted fresh cobwebs... She belfreyed the bats..."
I really enjoyed this story! It had a feel of the Night Before Christmas or The Grinch Who Stole Christmas in its storytelling, except that this one is about Halloween. The images tell much more about the story than the words do, and much time could be spent determining what is going on in the pictures. It is drawn as a graphic novel, and the text is very rhyme-y and singsong-y. I would definitely recommend this to people who love Halloween!
This ultra cute graphic novel/picture book was great. Scary Godmother is sick and Hannah tries to take over the Halloween preparations for her. The pictures are gorgeous, endearing and humorous.
