I am rereading this series because I thought I remembered how awesome it is. I was wrong! It's freaking better than I remembered. I literally read this one in two days and I couldn't put it down! I can't even express how excited I am reading and gushing about a book again! It's been awhile since I enjoyed a read as much as this one! Shifter fans HAVE to try this series. So freaking unique. It's an oldie but goodie!

Still as good the third time around. I love how steeped the book is in Texas and Tejano culture. The novel uses Tejano as a term for those who colonized Texas when it was part of Mexico and then stayed on after Santa Anna's defeat. Now it means anything from a particular music (not just Selena) to a Spanish speaking person in south Texas. But from the pecans, to the weather, to the Quinceañera, this book hits its setting dead on. New and familiar characters are set against new and familiar villains alongside a hot tale of two cops falling in love. Lol, truthfully I skip the "hot" parts on reread. These are not my favorite graphic love scenes. If you are looking for PNR/erotica light set in south Texas this book is good enough as a stand alone. Fiesta everyone!!!

I used to like this series, now it's a NO!

Cara believes very strongly in 'protect & serve' & sharing power. This is IMO used against her by Adam (& Will).
Adam is known for inflexibility.

Adam
Told alpha used binding to make pack attack 2 'Were cops' (villain alpha thought found out -- bound pack missed signs). 3 dead.
Cop uses gift lets Adam 'see' how alpha forced J to badly attack her mate T, (Strong resists alpha) as tried to stop her.
Told ruler alphas use bond to mute pack alphas, so less challenges.
Still: binding is good, he / J; T etc. miss 'pack in their minds.' (bound = cult)

*Mate bond to Cara, only sexually loyal. (deadly possessive, *can't harm {unless bind forced!}. Alphas can have many people 1 side mate bond to them. Males get 1 mate bond, if had sex can be no others. Females no issues!)

A, J, T talk bond 'She really thinks of it as a horrible thing, & unless I can find some way to convince—'
Here's Eddie (family, trusted, mensa smart problem solver). Instead of telling Cara, E (found his lover with looks & ID that fooled bouncers etc. is 16) gets Adam to bind him to stop 'wanting'. (Eww on using the gay guy, given the bigot lies! Why not a female being fooled!)

Uses new bond strength of J, T & E (not to get through block to use mate bond to send power) & 'slight binds' Cara! (No way binding magic didn't leave effects! - IMO 'A' felt her hidden stronger magic with the binding) C turns pathetic hands over her pack.

Uses their guilt convinces them binding is way to get girls back! (yep let all feel / deal with pain if one hurt etc. /s)

Adam tells them Cara to co-rule, will bind last in case of problems. (Why would one co-alpha need to submit bind to the other first?)

Uses bond with all pack to use pack magic etc. against Cara's wolf who heard co-ruler & doesn't see why she should just submit.

Cara 'I'm losing it, heat is coming on'. A's 'I have to get you fully out of control so we can share full ruler power'. (funny how he wasn't when got that power! Seems not 'harm' even though could kill her! /s)
Uses Cara's & all pack magic etc., to force her into her uncontrollable makes insane, heat (very rare inherited condition, stupidly flushed 'meds' after told got opium etc. in. A knows this & that her mom was too 'heat intoxicated' to fight being gang raped to death.
C did not want heat sex especially in front of her magic frozen, but fully aware, pack!
C's 'heat insane' out of control. A's in full control, he overcame 2 wavers. He's 'not just about pack, I'm falling in love with you' as he rapes her! C was 'No' while she still had clear mind; - intoxicated not consensual!
IMO he was showing pack & her that she belongs to him! Even with '2nd' proper binding her wolf was still 'kill him'.
IMO he 'knew' he was a lesser alpha. Why else trigger her wolf to heat insanity? He's seen she runs pack as a joint effort, so it was about control over her. He couldn't win a fair fight against her wolf! IMO No submit binding wolf would have shared power!)

{FYI Females do chose to co-rule with weaker males}

Bound heat mad wants to be his 'only alpha female, his female'... if co-ruler she'd be both, the latter, she can 'have' others! During this, he wants her to be 'just mine'. (He does not want to share her! Was it 'her' want or 'him' in her head. Handy he's now always in her mind after he's been told its okay for ruler alphas to 'mute' other alphas in their pack!)
Cara 'too soon to commit', but after her 3rd binding to him, 'loves him'.

Cara drank all the kool-aid.
Sudden realisation 'I was wrong, binding's wonderful, its brilliant we all know each others deepest secrets & I can feel everyone in my mind. Mom would be alive if pack had been bound.'

Can control their pack (i.e moon shifts) without the bond.

Binding doesn't stop heat!
'Frozen' mom to not escape = easy target.
Scent draws non pack males for miles!
'Frozen' affected* 'bound' pack = dad / safe pack would still have to deal with others & guard 'mom' every moon!
Even powerful alpha with pack magic can't keep 'freeze' on wife etc. as tries not to fall to mate's scent as battles keyed up males & 'kill' urge, (monthly bodies would be noticed!) even with back up.
(Who 'suddenly' put that idea in her head. She could break binding if Adam doesn't keep her 'stupid')
(*magically pheromones don't really work on mated to others, or a ruling alpha using full pack magic)

If can't block the link in time it will kill 'all' bound pack if alpha dies! Cara said in battle, when it looked possible! (Guess that's why sensible do a 'light' bind, but not Adam.)

How can a 'Ruler alpha' hide things from / manipulate / control via the bond.

Such a 'deep' binding 'cords solid as steel' (inflexible like Adam), rather than a light one, that everyone's deepest secrets were shared. (Raul 7, now knows 'how' pack males killed his gran!) -- bound think this is great!

FYI Lucas, ancient wolf leader, only uses a light binding, so all keep privacy etc.

Cara's pack: very healthy, no division between 'were' & non, all are pack none are excluded even around hunts.
Teen from 'new' pack, doesn't want to soon shift because she sees that 'were' treat 'humans' kin as lesser people. -- Normal in 'were' culture to be family but not pack etc. Often bullied, they often leave in their teens after its clear they're not going to shift.
Cara before learning (via Eddie) of teens feelings & what she'd seen first hand, did not believe in binding. Why even knowing how to, she'd never done it.

Post Binding
Cara's human pack, notice their were family are now closer to each other & to the were newcomers, acting like kin to strangers. They feel excluded. For the first time ever there's a division between family & pack.

Will (were cops = not bound!) old 'friend' 'saw' events.
Vision:
'expand to encompass the whole of your kind, rather than just your own pack' - kind = were only.
'several of your pack, your family, will die in terrible, bloody agony' 'you must be the one to knowingly send them to their deaths.' - Sis / BIL were not on rescue!

All over C told:
Will 'No binding only difference your sister & BIL died.' - How, said 'several' dead family on mission!

C in lesser need unconsciously {later told}, after finally learning healers can do so from any were, pulled A's power from 1200+ miles away! If not hit with binding she'd have done it again!)

Even 'addled' C knows she's broken her beloved family, it's now dividing by 'type' (then cult effect**).

Human kin: Saw suspicion & jealousy in them. Saw a rift. Will not let it grow to the level of fear & hate she'd seen in minds of Adam etc. She'd find some way to include the humans in the circle, because they're still 'were'. **They get to help make the tribute to Luis.

(Hmm only other wolf who challenged Adam is dead.
She's going to deign to allow his human family to help with his tribute.
She'll probably want humans to share their deepest secrets to 'bond'. A will 'convince' her that triggering her insane heat while he holds humans frozen to watch is good for bonding. /s)

NOT true Co-rulers
very powerful Will only addressed Adam when chose to allow binding pull ( said could sever later, hypocrite!). He'd know who was in 'true' control.
'1 unit 1 mind' that A controls, because he will manipulate Cara (heat; ignorance; her nature & use pack / her own power) to keep her only 'his'!

Adam 'treble bound' Cara, E,T,J (double rest) to him with binding them to her. Though she drew his blood he was unaffected 'binding' wise. When he took hers the bond let C take wolf's control! - He 'might' be bound once to C from last.
(IMO Co-ruler binding = each in 'full' control 'blood' half pack, bite lip, then share blood to bind & share power.
Makes no sense that a co-ruler binding would have one ruler bind the other if plan to share power as equals!)

Healers are rare, yet wasn't fully trained. No trainer sent when 'top dog' realised!

Lucas: 'impressed chief justice from when in were cop school, got her made sheriff! Says you can trust C to be a good pack leader, so its gold standard.'

C's alpha or she'd not 'pull' Adam, be able to moon control pack!

Why is Lucas acting like C will follow A! Her healer power felt his 1 way bond & used it.
Even if mated, L's alpha wife was mated to another 1st, yet wed L & they had a kid after!

Unfreezes pack, drew them closer. [[ to marvel in the sensation of the magic & the sight ]] He's the exhibitionist.

[[ he could feel the wolf inside her thrill to his touch. But this wasn’t all about the wolf.]] Anything done in heat madness is the wolf reacting, through Cara!

Cara [[saw strength in binding ]] [[ sad it had taken a crisis ]] [[ the ultimate democracy ]] [[ Each voice in her mind a counsel ]] [[ wasn’t dictatorship as her papi had feared ]] (probably lived it!)
[[ suddenly knew her mother didn’t have to die. ]]

The fact that after she's 'treble' bound she no longer cares that she'd public sex, is very telling, since Adam revelled in it. That for all his claims of co-rulers, A is still manipulating her through the bonds. Cara now 'thinking' wonderful has no reason to 'see' anything else, dig deeper.

had me fully hooked until the halfway point and then I started to get tired of it and I cant pinpoint why. the story is good. the writing well done and the despite their being A LOT of characters they were decently rounded out. it took me so long to finish (months) just because I couldnt stay hooked in the book.

Cara never asked to be Alpha of her small Texan pack but when her mentor and Alpha got sick, Cara was forced to step up. And she’s not doing a bad job or it either. Until she decides to use her Sazi strength in the presence of a young girl and a dying woman. Saving the woman’s life may be the end of Cara’s if the council deems it so.

Adam’s pack is very different from Cara’s. His Alpha is not a kind man and in fact, has sent Adam on a mission with the intent that Adam would be killed by Cara. Adam luckily is able to prove that he didn’t intentionally invade another Alpha’s territory but was rather sent to scout out a protentional move. That honesty was able to save his life. But the issue still remains. Adam’s pack has become too large in number to successfully stay off the radar of humans. So, the council has come up with the plan to merge Adam and Cara’s packs.

Adam and Cara do get on pretty well and the ability to lead their pack together isn’t at risk by any tension between the two. Rather the risk comes from a child sex trafficking ring and rogue snakes who threatening either Adam and Car hold dear.

This book wasn’t for me. First of all, it’s written more in the style of an Urban Fantasy novel then a romance novel. There’s a ton of plot information to digest and very little romance to offset it. When I say plot line info, I really mean it. It was very hard to follow the majority of the time and what I could understand made my head hurt. The world of the Sazi is a very harsh one. Not the pretty world of a normal shifter novel. It was brutal. Characters unable to control themselves sexually, the council able and willing to kill people so easily.

Another aspect of this book that made me not a fan is that its was sooooo boring. All that information tossed at me and nothing actually happening. Just talking…lots and lots of talking.

This is how werewolf romance should be done! Although there was admittedly a lot more backstory to this book than most romance novels, the change was welcome, and the authors' writing style made the experience enjoyable. Still not as top-notch as Patty Briggs' Mercy novels, but darn close. It's good to see writers utilizing the Pack structure as a plot point as it's all too often left out in a genre that relies strongly on a very social breed. You can't have all your wolves and weres glorious and beautiful and interacting like Borg. People's personalities interact and change group dynamics.

I liked this story mostly because it was almost entirely an emotional story, drawing on the changing social dynamics of the group to fuel people's actions. Well done.

Cara is the leader of her pack and not doing very good at it. With the whole secrecy thing it's just to much. In comes Adam with his wolves as well and the deputy too boot. Well things are bound to get a little crazy between Cara and him. Why because they are fated mates and the clash from the beginning. But working together doesn't seem to bother Cara and Adam because they are working to stop the killing of the young in both packs. They discover in each other things they like and from there the relationship is easier to manage. I mean they are not biting their heads off whenever they see each other. Now that they get along the monster out there may be targeting them. What will they do to protect their pack?

This story follows a Timberwolf shifter as he and a number of his pack are banished from Minnesota to live amongst a small community of red wolf shifters in Texas. Meanwhile, a flock of vicious Sazi raptors are taking human victims, further disrupting this upheaval and forcing the two packs to work together to stop the murders

I think this is in the middle of the series. I really enjoyed it. Sazi are the were people. Wolves from Chicago have to move to the area of Texas that has red wolves. A vicious group is kidnapping girls with some purpose they have not discovered. Good action, creative mythology and good characters. Will want to read more in this series.

Adam is sent to Texas to meet with the alpha there to begin integrating their packs, when she didn't even know about it. Many twists and turns. They both learn about being alpha and solve the mystery of the attacks on humans and kidnapped girls. Another good read.

Both of them are cops, he's a timber wolf and she's a Mexican red wolf. Raptor and snake shifters.

The sacrifices of the lead characters makes them worth the read. This duo continues to create situations that tweak the werewolf legend to fit the needs of the story. I like the fact that familiar characters are interspersed throughout the story to help create a sense of continuity.

This is my first Sazi book - I jumped right into the middle, lol. I love it! It's a very good shifter story with complicated characters and more realistic shifters than most shifter stories have. Definitely recommend.
