Book 4 in the Shadows of Justice King of the Chicago underworld, smuggler Slick Micky is targeted by an old enemy eager to take over his operation. With her ability to induce deadly illusions, Trina Durham is the best assassin around. She left Chicago when Slick Micky killed her best friend, but this job offers an irresistible chance for vengeance...
Regan Black, a USA Today bestselling author, writes award-winning, action-packed romantic novels featuring kick-butt heroines and the sexy heroes who fall in love with them. She and her husband currently enjoy the empty-nest life in the South Carolina Lowcountry where the rich blend of legend, romance, and history fuels her imagination.
First, let me say that I wasn't able to put down "Tracking Shadows" once I started reading it. It is a book that immediately interested me because I had to get my head around the film noir atmosphere with the tinge of a science fiction addition. I loved it from the first paragraph.
Regan Black has the mind and hand of a Mickey Spillane on steroids. I couldn't stop reading her sassy lines from characters that grabbed me like a steel wrench. Her anti heroine, Trina, is the alpha woman we dream of being...smart, beautiful and strong in a man's world, but sensitive, and carrying around that emptiness that the love of life can only fill. She's scarred by the loss of her childhood sweetheart, the only person who made her feel safe from a family who mistreated and beat her down emotionally. As and adult, she finds the physical and intellectual outlet for her emptiness and her psychic gifts by becoming an A+ assassin bent on revenge for those who killed Joel, that childhood friend.
Joel has become Slick Mickey, the biggest gangster smuggler in Chicago, with a staff of "mules" who distribute contriband to those who pay for it in secret. The title of Slick Mickey is coveted by gangster rivals, and assassins are recruited to knock Mickey out of his seat of power. With technologies and gifts of his own culled from the 2096 futuristic discoveries, Slick Mickey is able to maintain a fortress of security, and a family loyal to his secure and family-like ways. There appears to be a soft center at the heart of this mobster boss who only deals in sugar, coffee and cigarettes, and not drugs and dangerous contraband unlawful to the futuristic government.
It is through the impact of Trina and Slick Mickey's ill-fated reunion that we experience the tension of love and hate on the characters. They are wonderfully and richly developed. Each of them are characters who seem alive and emotive people; they kept me in mind of a younger Russell Crowe, and a Scarlet Johansen couple. Tough and tender...
The technological components of this book are subtle and don't overtake the story which was refreshing for one who isn't quite capable of understanding all the nuances of that sort of thing. There was just enough to keep a novice interested, maybe a little more than that, but not enough to make one set aside the book in frustration.
Ms Black has written quite a few books in the 2096 timeframe, which is of great interest to me now that she's gotten me started! I'm going to be looking for her books and reading them in sequence. I like her writing style.
Regan Black has a certain edgy quality to her writing. She writes like an old "beat" reporter in a way. It's just awesome to read. If you're a fan of old 1940's detective novels, or if you like film noir..."The Postman Always Rings Twice" or "The Black Dahlia," I believe you'll like "Tracking Shadows." It's not that the book is so much like those I mention above in full...it's just that flavor kick that's so unusual, I predict you'll want to come back for more.
I would not survive in this world. It was intriguing, everything is regulated. Everything. Even coffee (I would die without my coffee fix). But it had such a great mystery to it. Trina out for revenge, instead of just a paycheck offered up a great story. And Slick Micky gaining loyalty from his mules by kindness, but still being firm, was different that what I would have imagined for a crime lord.
Trina wants to avenge her best friend by taking out Slick Micky, who is responsible for his death. Trina's power was interesting. She can create illusions, change her appearance, torment, to slip through the cracks. It definitely made for an interesting dynamic to the assassin bit.
Tracking Shadows was definitely a good read. I highly enjoyed the mystery. It wasn't too immersed into the dystopia genre to turn me away from the novel. If you haven't looked into this book, you should. It was very enjoyable.
Tracking Shadows is a smart, sexy and dangerous read that you won’t be able to put down!
When her only friend was murdered Trina Durham ran away from Chicago, escaping her grief while learning how to control her unique psychic abilities and make a name for herself as a deadly assassin. But now Trina is back and she is out for revenge against the man that murdered her best friend. Taking the hit on Slick Mickey, the biggest smuggler in Chicago, was suppose to be an easy in and out job but it’s turning out to be anything but. When the mobster finally steps from the shadows her past and present collides, revealing deadly secrets for each of them and putting their lives even more at risk.
The world that Regan Black has built in Tracking Shadows instantly intrigued me; a country where the government has restricted anything bad for you, cigarettes, caffeine, alcohol, and where technology has had major developments. These restrictions have brought a great money making opportunity to Chicago’s mobsters and that is where the story starts. Slick Mickey is a mobster with morals; never dealing in the hard stuff and taking care of those that work for him as if they were family, his character appealed to me. The protagonist, Trina, really came to life on the pages though and was an incredibly endearing character. The emotional and physical tension between her and Mickey brought an edge to the story and grabbed at your heart. Each character in Tracking Shadows was feisty, strong and independent. Wonderfully developed with an immense amount of depth, providing witty dialogue and introspect. Regan Black has an entertaining and simple writing style allowing the story to flow smoothly. The world building was superb and didn’t overshadow the actual plot or characters.
Suspense and intrigue with a dash of romance, Tracking Shadows was a captivating read that felt twice as long as it’s 120 or so pages. I will definitely be checking out her Shadows of Justice series, which feature several characters from this novel that captured my attention.
In 2096, when scarcity is commonplace, and even everyday items are outlawed or strictly regulated, a few enterprising entrepreneurs have tremendous influence over black market items. In Chicago, Slick Micky, runs his organization in a firm yet strangely benevolent fashion. Of course, when you are at the top of the heap, the opposition against you is formidable. When Micky’s friend and partner is murdered, he is determined to unravel the conspiracy aligned against him, and protect his family.
As clues are uncovered, an assassin is unleashed. Then the situation really gets complicated as Micky’s past finally catches up to him. Old hurts and long-buried feelings resurface when Micky discovers the assassin is Trina, a beloved friend from another lifetime ago.
Micky and Trina seem to be continually repelled and attracted to each other even though both have changed significantly during their years’ apart, but when the chips are down, and tough decisions must be made, they seem to end up always protecting each other’s back. This story weaves a spell that kept me glued to the pages as the convoluted and exciting activity ultimately delivered me to a supremely satisfying denouement.
I really enjoyed this book. I don’t think I could live in a world where coffee and sugar are “restricted substances” and I will sure try to be one of Slick Micky’s customers; especially because he is not your usual “smuggler”. Being a fan of this series I was greatly rewarded with this story and look forward to see what the author was in store for us.
If there is one genre that I love almost as much as romance, it's urban fantasy and when I find a book that has both - I'm in serious heaven. I was given a review copy of Tracking Shadows as part of a blog tour and I'll admit, I generally stay away from futuristic stories but I'm telling you, right here... right now... I WOULD'VE BEEN A FOOL TO PASS THIS BY. I absolutely fell in love with this book and wild horses couldn't drag me out of it. Forget being pulled into a story, I was sucked in and held captive. I did NOT want this book to END *pouts*
What an amazing storyline. I have to give kudos to Regan because there was no point in this story were my energy lagged or where I found my attention drifting. She created characters that I instantly liked and I'll admit, I was a little "unsure" about the name Slick Micky. The image that came to mind was not very flattering and for a romance junkie who is all about the sexy and swoony, I had my fingers crossed. What a welcome surprise when Micky turned out to be this guy that was all kinds of seductive goodness. I LOVED everything about him... the danger of his position as the "head" guy, the protectiveness he felt towards those who worked for him, the vulnerability and emotion he brought with his feelings for Trina and just the "feel" of him. I can't describe it... I'm crushing hard!
I LOVED the concept Regan used for smuggling. It made me giggle that the contraband of the story were things like sugar and coffee, things we take for granted now but in the future, things we'll move heaven and earth to get a little of. I love that even though Micky was the "King of Supply and Demand" with his slogan "Anything.. anywhere... anytime", he worked hard at providing a safe place for people. I loved all the drama that came with the story, the conspiracy and hidden plots in trying to assassinate Micky and the incredible intelligence it took to figure it out. It was a complete rush to read as it slowly unfolded.
I am a huge fan of strong heroines. Nothing turns me off more than a weak spined female that cowers and simpers and waits for a knight in shining armor to sweep in a make everything better. Sure, that may be nice once in a while, but nothing beats reading about a woman who can think for herself. Trina is this kind of woman and I loved watching the way she developed throughout the story. She was so hell bent on revenge, devastated over the death of her BFF and as her plans unravel, she's left unsure of where she fits. What she does know, is she will protect and do all she can to keep the man of her heart safe. I really liked watching her melt and change and accept that Micky wasn't who she believed he was.
I have to share. For the Menage A Blog, the author shared one of the swoony moments in the book. It left me with a huge smile on my face but there was another scene that touched me, so much I'd recommend the book just on it. Micky, for the big, bad smuggler he was, grieved heavily for the loss of a beloved friend. When it came time to give his speech at the memorial, his emotions choked him and it was Trina who helped him through it. CHILLS that kept on coming as he later sought her out and the moment they shared had me stop reading so I could share it with my BFF. It's emotions like those that make reading an amazing experience for me and I was SO glad to find them in Tracking Shadows.
This is definitely a book I'd recommend to die hard urban fantasy lovers but also to romance lovers because it really was the best of both worlds. This book has a lot to offer and I'm really glad that I had the chance to read it. Now, all I need do is convince Regan to write more Micky. I feel an addiction coming on! Happy reading.
Chicago, in 2096. Slick Mickey is undoubtedly the king of smugglers; his key products are caffeine and sugar. Mickey lives in the shadows, no one knows who he really is and few rarely see him. His reputation is larger than life. Mickey has many enemies and few friends. Those who work for him love him. Those who work against him fear him. Trina Durham counts herself as his number one enemy; Slick Mickey killed her best friend years earlier, causing her to leave Chicago forever. Known as the best of the best assassins, she has a hidden weapon in her arsenal, she can induce deadly hallucinations. Now the opportunity has presented itself for Trina to exact vengeance against Slick Mickey, and get paid for doing it. Trina will not be deterred as she and Mickey play a deadly game of cat and mouse, both discovering that the person behind the mask is not always who they seem.
Slick Mickey has many faces and personas, so that even his best of friends don’t know who he really his. He is tough as nails when it comes to protecting his business interests, and has the reputation of someone you don’t want to cross, but the people who work for him love him in almost a cult fashion. What a dichotomy he is, on one hand he is feared and ruthless, on the other soft and caring to his people. Who is he really? He is a great character that you love one minute and not so much the next. Trina is one of the best female leads I’ve encountered in a while, she isn’t embarrassed by what she does, and she’s good at it and is proud of that fact. She can change herself from one person to the next in a matter of minutes, what fun to watch her work. Like Mickey, she has a soft side but boy howdy does she hide it well. The push/pull between these two was full of unexpected twists and turns for both of them, I don’t think either one of them was aware of how they felt at any given moment. There are some good secondary characters here that help to move the story along, even some old friends from previous books.
I have to admit I was a little worried when I found out that Slick Mickey would be the lead in this book, we don’t know a lot about him from previous books and what we do know isn’t all that good. I always thought of him as almost a throw away character and was really worried that he would not be able to carry a book on his own, boy was I wrong. Slick Mickey steps up and not only holds his own but does it with style. I liked Trina, for an assassin she isn’t a bad type, I might even go so far as to say she was almost too good. There are some great high tech gadgets in the book but not so much that you get lost in them. As with the other books in this series, there is some great dialogue and snappy one-liners, but also some serious moments as well. One of Mickey’s mules, April, while saying goodbye asks Trina to contact her if she needs anything, and says, “Promise me, with words.” I don’t know why but that line just said a lot to me, almost like April was seeing right down beneath Trina’s cover.
You don’t have to have read any of the previous books to keep up with this one (But why wouldn’t you? They are great!). There is violence here, all within the story line and not too graphic, and some sex, again not too graphic. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves futuristic urban fantasy mixed in with some good old-fashioned mushy stuff. Way to go Ms. Regan, you deserve the elusive 5 stars from me.

After reviewing Ms. Blacks three books in her Justice series last year, I was excited to hear she had another book releasing. I had no idea what Penny and I would be Dual reviewing, and was just looking forward to read something from Regan again. Ms. Black’s books offer strong heroines, along with alpha males who do not dominate, but accept their women as partners. This book did not disappoint.
Trina was an assassin. The moment this became a viable career choice for her, was her loss of a school friend, Joel. This was in the 2090’s in Chicago where commodities like sugar and coffee were banned by the government. Like prohibition, smugglers dealt in services to people ‘in need’. At that time, while both in high school, Trina watched Joel try to sell these commodities to the students who needed the nicotine, sugar or caffeine rush. To her horror, she watched Joel get killed by a tremendous explosion, while trying to get a piece of the pie cutting into Slick Mickey’s lucrative business.
The relationship that could have been, but never was, haunted Trina until her hatred festered and her only desire was to avenge Joel’s death. Her wish was to eventually kill Slick Mickey. Her career path was destined.
In the previous books, we met Slick Mickey. He was a side character, giving aide at times with his connections to our main players in Chicago 2096. Petra, Jaden and the others could be found at his expansive warehouse hidden from the outside world. We didn’t know too much about him and I was surprised to learn at page one about Trina, her past, and her plans that brought her to Chicago to kill him.
Chicago’s underworld is ruled by different factions, all infighting for money and power. Everyone vies for the big title. Slick Mickey has worked hard making sure to take care of his people he calls family and they will lay down their lives to protect him. Trina has powers to make others hallucinate. This helps her with her job creating pictures in their minds.
Again Ms. Black has brought to life a story of excitement, love, and faith in a fast paced story with mysterious twists and turns that keeps you furiously turning the pages to see what happens next! Trina’s strength and intelligence is dazzling, and our Slick Mickey is up for this as well. This was one dynamite read… the whole series is.
Expected Release Date: May 3, 2011 (Available Now!) Publisher: Self Published Imprint: N/A Author’s Website: http://www.reganblack.com/ My Source for This Book: Won in a contest, picked up from Smashwords. Part of a Series: Yes, Book 4, Shadows of Justice Series Series Best Read In Order: Yes Steam Level: Steamy
I’ll admit, I was a bit surprised that I’d never heard of this author until I was lucky enough to snag this book in a contest. With plenty of action, a solid dose of romance, plenty of angst, and a very intriguing future society, this book was truly wonderful. I didn’t realize going into this story that it was part of a previously established series, and as such there were occasions where I felt as though I’d missed something, but in general I think it stood quite well on its own.
The entire concept of the government controlling such innocuous substances as caffeine and refined sugar was believable to anyone who has their eye on the ever-shrinking personal rights of Americans these days, and just as with the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920′s, it is easy to see that some higher-ups would easily turn a blind eye to illegal activity in smuggling and distributing the very products many of these people consume themselves.
Overall, I loved it. The angst surrounding Micky’s identity, and Trina’s belief that she wasn’t worthy of him due to all of the blood on her hands was well played, and the romance felt organic without overtaking the plot. There were just enough fantastical elements to keep the story solidly in the realm of urban fantasy, and the pacing was fast without exhausting the reader.
Highly recommended for fans of slightly futuristic urban fantasy and a welcome reprieve from vampires, werewolves, and magic.
Genre: Romantic Suspense w/Paranormal Elements My Usual Genre? Yes on the Romantic Suspense; no on the Paranormal elements but that was just some psychic powers, not weird creatures of the night or demons, so that aspect of the book didn't bug me much. My Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Why I Read This: Cover caught my eye during a free giveaway (a year ago) from a Twitter contact that I did not (at that time) know very well, so I figured why not? Actually, I solicited her for the name of her cover designer and we ended up chatting ever since. Still took me a year to get to her book.
My Review: From the start, the author's voice is gripping and original. I absolutely loved the opening scene of the book. Interestingly, I didn't realize this was Book 4 of a series until I remembered to go add it to my currently-reading shelf on Goodreads. That's when I noticed it was part of a series, so I guess that says the book opens independently enough I don't feel I've missed something in an earlier book of the series.
On the downside of that same coin, however, the story jumped right in without any backfill on the series' events, the world or the characters' previous history in the series. I didn't "need" this info to follow the story in this specific book, but in retrospect, I think some series connectivity would have improved the early chapters of this book. For instance, I was starting to get confused with the vague references to "Slick Micky" or "the Slick Micky." Not only did I keep wanting to spell it "Mickey" but the presence of "the" (as a title rather than a name) made me wonder who or what this person was and/or how many of them are there? It was obviously part of the mystery of the story but I think it was one of those cases where the author withheld just slightly too much and left the reader uncessarily confused. It was just slight, though, not enough to ruin my entire reading experience.
One of the things I loved the most--and right out of the starting gate--was the author's voice. Regan paints rich word pictures and uses a gritty gumshoe tone to build a suspenseful ambience against which the story unfolds in layers. It's not quite peeling an onion but there is definitely a detective novel feel to the start of this book.
With the introduction of a new character, Trina Durham, in Chapter 2, I found myself really liking someone and not caring that I didn't know where or when I was or what made the world the way it seemed to be. The fact that the character distracted me from my analysis proves her richness and depth. I did remember reading in a description of the book that there was a psychic assassin or something like that and at the time, I recall I'd rolled my eyes at the idea, but the more I read, the more I became a fan. The scene where Trina is a veritable killing machine was awesome - a very crunchy fight scene worthy of a milfic novel. The "psychic" skills definitely enhance Trina's killing abilities.
Unfortunately, in Chapter 3 when the POV changed, I got distracted again by the lack of time, place, setting details. I kept wanting to know when this was--obviously in the future, but the date is never stated--and what it was that happened between now and then. The future world was changed, not quite dystopic but there was talk of sugar and coffee being outlawed. It sounded like a joke at first (satire?) but it quickly became apparent that Regan intended it to be a part of the future world. I spent too much energy trying to figure it out to stay really invested in the story.
Given how completely Trina's character sucked me in during Chapter 2, losing me in Chapters 3 and 4 due to world-building seemed off. The quality of writing was superior to this level of mistake. It was at this point I took off one star from my 5-star rating and sadly, I kept myself "on guard" for the rest of the book, looking to see if this star could be redeemed or if I needed to take away another. I would have preferred to just read the book and not be on the lookout for issues. Had the world building been solid in the first few chapters, I would definitely have just read for the sheer joy of this book and how well it was written.
There was one other instance of "author withholding" that definitely caught my attention and would have distracted me but thankfully, Regan answered the question right away, around the 25% mark. It has to do with the Slick Micky character's real identity. I'll refrain from giving away that spoiler here. It's a good one, though.
After this point, I just loved all of the crossed paths plotting! The pacing in the middle really picked up and since I was finally, fully-invested in the two main characters, I started flying through the book, yearning to read more when I had to go to work or do something else. Thinking about a book when you're not reading it is always a sign of a writing job well-done.
In the second half of the book the story turns, changes tone slightly from the gumshoe detective novel into a more classic romance novel. This is pretty much the definition of a classic Romantic Suspense novel. The two MC's have an awesome first kiss and I just loved the plot twist about Joel's appearance due to his prior injuries. I like to have flawed Heroes that are so attractive inside you just don't care what they look like. I found the whole "kiss in darkness" to be iconic.
Then, finally, when I got to the big sex scene, it was just as hawt as had been promised by that first kiss. The romance novel side of this book was completely rewarding, while there was very little actual sex. It was more romantic than it was sexual, which honestly, I prefer (despite being known for my own steaming hot and explicit sex scenes).
Finally, we come to The End and Regan still managed to impress me one more time. See, I love symmetrical plotting--those times where we come, at The End, to the same scene we visited at the beginning but with a new outcome. I often try to do this myself, as a Romantic Suspense author, but it's not as easy as it sounds. When it clicks into place for an author, it's magical and this really clicked for Regan.
The ending left me satisfied with Joel and Trina's romance, satisifed enough with the mystery-style plot but still interested in reading more about this world and the people in it.
My one and only gripe, even at The End, was that I still had no world-building backfilled anywhere. I have to subtract one full star for that lack; otherwise, I could find no flaw or fault with this book. It was exceedingly well done from plotting, pacing and character development through to the imaginative ideas and original voice. And my final word on this? I would definitely read more by this author.
This book was a very nice surprise for me. I read it on a rainy night, when I wasn't in the best of moods. But it was a quick, fun, read and because Regan's writing is really awesome and flows so smoothly, I didn't even feel like I was reading a book, but like I was watching one of my favorite TV shows on a lazy evening. All the crime, mystery elements, the high tech cool things featured in the book and the tension and the bickering between the main characters helped a lot in that matter. ;)
Tracking Shadows is told from Micky and Tania's POVs. When they were very young, they were best friends but a terrible accident separated them forever (or so it seemed at the time), before they got any chance to explore their growing relationship. The hard times America was going through made them take hard decisions and go on different, dangerous paths: Micky became Slick Miky and Trina became a very feared assassin. And years later, another murder and the tension that stirred Chicago brought them face to face again.
As the king of the smugglers of Chicago, of course Miky has enemies. Well, one of them killed his friend, his partner, his 'sister' and will do anything to get rid of him and take the reins of his kingdom. And Micky will do anything to find this murderer and to protect the people he cares about. Trina is a kick butt assassin with psychic abilities (she can use scary hallucinations to kill her enemies). She could never get over her best friend's death years ago and she promised to avenge him, which led her to this solitary and dangerous life. But when things begin to stir in Chicago's mobsters' world and her principal suspect seems closer than ever, she comes to investigate. The two crimes seem to be connected, and their both investigations bring Micky and Trina unexpectedly close to each other. And this is when the things get interesting, but anything I would say in the matter would be a major spoiler, so... You'll have to read and find out for yourself what happens next. ;) (but it involved a lot of "OMG you've got to be kidding me" moments).
I loved the main characters, they were easy to relate to and their chemistry was perfect. In fact, they are everything we need the main characters from an Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance book to be and then some: kind of arrogant, snarky, hot main male character, witty, kick butt heroine, hilarious bickering between them and delicious tension. And there is no insta-love, which, obviously, is a plus. They may have not seen each other in years and they may rediscover their relationship and who they really are, but their feelings for each other go way back and the last events only made them stronger and more impossible to ignore. Micky wasn't "half as heartless as the world believed", considering his reputation as a smuggler and all, and Trina did what she had to do in order to survive those hard times and to avenge the death of the only person she ever really cared about. They are caring, smart, assertive, capable of taking hard decisions when necessary... They are simply awesome!:))
I need to mention that the first chapter was a bit confusing and sometimes things seemed to be happening too fast. I also had the urge to roll my eyes at the characters' internal monologues a few times, but in the end, everything kind of made sense for the story development.
So Tracking Shadows is definitely a page-turner, full of action and twists and turns that will keep the readers on the edge of their seat. The suspense, mystery-crime, conspiracy and futuristic elements, the film-noir atmosphere combined with a touch of humor and the perfect dose of romance make this book a very interesting and entertaining read, a perfect getaway from the everyday routine. As I mentioned before, reading it feels more like watching a great TV show!
*Review based on the e-copy of the book I received for free from the author to review as a tour host of the Tracking Shadows Blog Tour. I expressed my honest opinion about the book and I wasn't influenced or compensated in any way for posting it.
A short way in the future, various substances, such as sugar and coffee are outlawed. The crime boss, "Slick Micky", procures these for his customers. But someone doesn't like Micky in charge and has hired assassin, Trina, to dispose of him. When Trina discovers his identity, will she harm him or help him?
In Tracking Shadows, Regan Black has created a very realistic view of a future Chicago. It was easy to believe in the outlawing of various substances we currently see as innocuous, and that a criminal element would spring up to get these things for people.
I loved Micky. He was an intelligent man, with a strong protective streak, trying to do his best in the circumstances he'd ended up in. He seemed to lose some of the intelligence towards the end and start acting more on emotion, but I think that showed development of character.
Trina I wasn't so sure of. I liked her character arc, but there were sections where her reactions and decisions made no sense to me.
I found the story, as a whole, fast-paced and absorbing. The very first words drew me in, and I could hardly stop reading in the middle. The author certainly kept the action up. For me, it seemed to slow in the final third, but I think that was due to the change in direction of the storyline.
For anyone who likes a lot of action, strong, intelligent characters, and doesn't mind a couple of sections when the author switches point of view in the same scene (pet peeve of mine), I would recommend you try Tracking Shadows.
Tracking Shadows by Regan Black is a story about Slick Micky the smuggler lord of Chicago's crime scene. Slick Mickey is not your normal criminal kingpin choosing to deal mainly in the lighter side of banned substances (sugar, caffeine, cigarettes, etc) he has a great setup for all of his mules. Unfortunately another local crime lord thinks they can do a better job being the smuggling king of Chicago and an assassin is hired to take him out. Starting with the murder of his partner and oldest friend puts Micky on the defensive and he begins a quest to find out who is trying to have him killed.
Trina Durham is one of the best assassins in the world. Taking the job to kill Micky was a pleasure for her as he killed her best friend in highschool. The chase that Trina is on to find Micky circles around as Micky tries to find her and who hired her.
Regan weaves her tale of suspense and intrigue around her characters very skillfully. The future that she creates has some wonderful advancements in technology and show the government getting more and more extreme in their restrictions of what they consider bad. This story will hold your interest from start to finish keeping you eager to turn the page.
"Tracking Shadows" by Regan Black that I received free through Smashwords was an amazing read.I couldn't put this book down.I read it on my Kindle and it was nail-biting tension.
The novel takes place in Chicago, in 2096. Slick Mickey is undoubtedly the king of smugglers; his key products are caffeine and sugar. Mickey lives in the shadows, no one knows who he really is and few rarely see him. His reputation is larger than life. Mickey has many enemies and few friends. Those who work for him love him. Trina will not be deterred as she and Mickey play a deadly game of cat and mouse, both discovering that the person behind the mask is not always who they seem.
This is not your classic love story. But it is a great one. Black has interwoven this story with all the classics found in other great works. Mystery, intrigue, deception, betrayal, and romance. Top that off with a great story line and some misdirection and you have one great book.
I loved reading this. It’s borderline dark thriller but not enough that I found myself going ‘ewww’ when heads rolled. It was graphic enough to portray its meaning but not enough to make me lose my lunch. The story line was believable and so were the characters.
Rarely have I read such a deep story and gotten carried away as I did with “Tracking Shadows.” I fell right into it and when Trina hurt, I felt her pain. I loved the bad guys and good guys alike and mourned for the deaths and rejoiced for those spared. This is such a good book I recommend you read it twice.
This was my first urban fantasy novel... and now I'm hooked!
The story between Trina and Joel takes place in a dark futuristic atmosphere. It's very different from what I'm used to (I usually read paranormal and contemporary romance), but very interesting and intriguing.
The plot is complex and action packed. I sometimes had trouble following what was happening, but it could be because English is not my first language, or because I haven't read the other books from this series.
It was still such a great story that I bought a bundle with books #1, 2 and 3. Can't wait to read the story of some of the characters I've met in Tracking Shadows!
I won this book on a blog tour in exchange of an honest review, so here it is : I honestly loved it!
I don't read a lot of sci-fi or futuristic books. However, I have the pleasure of being in a Blog Tour with this incredible lady and I had to see what my competition was bringing to the table.
Tracking Shadows has given me cause to be a little nervous.
The first line sucked me in and I couldn't put my Kindle down. Murder, smugglers, a little dry humor. This book had it all. I don't think I'd make it in Chicago 2096 at all. No sugar...no coffee; you know I'd be Slick Micky's top customer :)
There were a few times I had to go back and re-read a few things (was he invisible?) but other than that I really enjoyed the book and am honored to be sharing a tour with Regan.
I'll admit it took me a few pages to get into this story, but once I did I had a hard time putting it down. I loved this book. To me it seemed like a future that could possibly happen, one where all our choices are taken away. The only problem I had was I wish the story had more futurist type things in it. What's there is good, however. Great book. I would definitely recommend it. I plan on reading more of Regan's books.
Regan Black is a new author for me and Tracking Shadows really caught my interest when I first heard about it. I was so lucky to get my hands on an E-copy and I think it was a very good book. I really liked Trina and Slick Micky they were both characters who was easy to identify with. They both had big personalities so as a reader you could connect with them on some emotional level. They had to make some hard decisions. Trina was broken in a way and it was amazing how she little by little picked pieces up of herself and put them back together in a new way when she went along with her quest. It kind of made her a whole new person.
I liked how the story took place in 2096, the almost no sugar, no nicotine and no caffeine policy was a great twist and it really made me think about how our world will actually look like when that year comes along. It's an interesting way to tell people that you can try your best to get rid of something even by making a law, but it will properly still be there "underground". I liked how the location reminded me a little of a film noir, the descriptions was very well written.
The story had a few slow moments where I felt that there was to much talk and not enough action, but it was a mysterious and thrilling novel, it gave hope in a world where there was very little and to find romance in such a world...that gave Tracking Shadows something special.
I look forward to read more books from Regan Black.
Trina Durham has one thing on her mind: revenge. She’s out to kill Slick Micky for the murder of her childhood friend, Joel. She’s an assassin with a unique ability to induce hallucinations, both horrifying and wonderful, in those around her and she plans on using it to find the Chicago mob boss.
Slick Micky is the king of smuggling in 2096 Chicago. He deals only in non-lethal contraband like coffee and sugar and delivers always and on time. He’s a master of illusion and only a few know his real identity, but someone wants to topple his empire. He has a loyal team that surrounds him and no one has been able to reach him, until now.
Micky’ and Trina’s world are about to collide in this dark urban thriller. The plot moves along quickly as the author peels back the layers surrounding these two people--who they really are and what makes them tick. Intrigue, suspense and a simmering romance makes STALKING SHADOWS an excellent read. Fans of thrillers and romance will definitely want to pick up this title.
wow. Great book. i loved the underground world of smuggling in Chicago but then to add in the hint of the unexplainable, just enough to be believable and not cheesy...i think I've found my next series "must-read"!
