Alix Rickloff

Critically acclaimed author of historical fiction, Alix Rickloff’s family tree includes a knight who fought during the Wars of the Roses (his brass rubbing hangs in her dining room) and a soldier who sided with Charles I during the English Civil War (hence the family's hasty emigration to America). With inspiration like that, what else could she do but start writing her own stories? She lives in Maryland in a house that’s seen its own share of history so when she’s not writing, she can usually be found trying to keep it from falling down.

This story is very good, I will definitely read it again. This is the third book in the "Heirs of Kilronin Trilogy". I did not read the first two books but, this book did explain the prior situations.

It has been seven years since Elizabeth was left at the alter by the man she loved in her childhood. Eventually she is able to move on from the betrayal, humiliation and loss to try to make a new life for herself. She feels she is ready to marry Gordon and be happy, but the one man she never thought she would see again walks back into her life the night before the wedding as a guest.

Brendan has been constantly fighting or trying to outrun many enemies over the last seven years- including his own demons. He is determined to fight the evil mage Miclodor to the death, even if it is his own before the mage unlocks the past to redefine the future. Brendan only has one problem- the key to his success is a precious stone he left behind with Elizabeth when he callously left at the alter.

While Brendan is searching for the stone his feelings are growing strong for Elizabeth. He knows he can't pull her into the danger that is ahead of him, but he can not keep her safe if she stays in her home without his protection. He has sworn to do anything to correct the wrongs he has done these past seven years. But is he willing to sacrifice this brave, bewitching woman that Elizabeth has become and to give up hope on any chances to be with the one person who is starting to mean everything in the world to him?

Fantasy nightmare

This is Brendan's story. Full of angst and anger, loss and love. A fitting end to the trilogy as the story turns full circle as Brendan seeks redemption and forgiveness and to right his wrongs. Good story.

This blurb came from the author’s website here.

Heir Of Danger is the conclusion of Alix Rickloff’s Heirs of Kilronan trilogy. Despite my OCD tendency that drives me to start every series with the first book, I went ahead and started with this one because I really liked the blurb and it reminded me of the epic fantasy romances I used to read. I highly recommend that you read the first two books before picking this one up. You can follow the action and infer some of what happened previously but there is a lot of back-story and world building that I think would add to the reader’s understanding and enjoyment. I say this because I was somewhat lost in the beginning specifically with some of the non-English pronouns used to describe different groups of people. I actually looked in the back hoping to find a glossary. I could also tell that some of the characters had some painful past history with each other that I would have enjoyed knowing.

Even though it took me a little bit to grasp enough of the backstory to really get into why Brendan was risking his life, I was immediately sucked in with my introduction of the villain Maelodor, and Elisabeth’s first encounter with Brendan. I think that was when Elisabeth captivated me as a character. Initially I wasn’t sure that she would be a strong enough character to help make her own destiny or if she was just going to be swept along by events. I was very pleased to see that Elisabeth refused to just accept what happened and continued fighting for information and to make her own decisions. Her strength of will was rather important as the book continued.

Brendan was a tortured hero in more ways then one if I have ever read one. It seemed like everything he tried to make up for in past events, it just made things worse. Yet I could also see how he made it worse on himself so he certainly wasn’t blameless. It was fascinating to watch Brendan as the story unfolded and see his struggle to complete what he saw as his redemption, sacrificing himself along the way, without dragging anyone else he cared about down with him.

This novel had revenge, betrayal, kidnappings, death one of which I think came too easily, love, magic, visions, and things that really weren’t quite as they seemed. Given the sheer amount of activity in this last book I had to wonder if the first two moved at a slower pace and built everything up to this or if Ms Rickloff kept things moving quickly throughout the entire series.

I give Heir of Danger a B+

Think back to your growing up years, was there a special boy you had a crush on? One who always seemed to be getting into trouble yet could turn around and give you a smile to make you melt? Elisabeth knew one such young man, and she should have ended up getting married to him except he disappeared. Which would you rather do, take him back with kisses or slug him?

Elisabeth chose to use her fists, a true sense of her character peeking out in that moment. She is feisty and stubborn even though she may not have any hidden magic or secret talents. Seems she is just perfect for a certain bad boy named Brendan.

Brendan has really dug himself a hole and inadvertently taken Elisabeth down with him. Even though he has made some poor choices he is still fighting to repair the damage and is willing to put himself on the line for Elisabeth. Now that screams deep feelings, even if he can’t bring himself to say the words. It is his feelings for her that make all the difference, even when you have given up hope.

Heir of Danger brings the fey to England, both the light and dark courts. Rickloff has given the legends a nice spin with beings that seem to be descendants of the fey and other mythical type beings, Killer being one bright star in the story. Killer is a fur ball of a dog who takes it upon himself to shadow Elisabeth and make faces at her, just enough to make you wonder if there is more to this four legged friend. It is fun to see Elisabeth, who is almost a regular human, handle being thrown into situations that have the potential to end in war. Lucky for Brendan she doesn’t always hold her tongue!

A fresh take on Regency England and a great paranormal novel. Not only that but there is also a great romance involved, a jilted bride abducted by her ex-fiancé. Both fighting their attraction and unsure if they are falling in love or just want to take out some aggression on each other. If you enjoy anything fey you do not want to miss this series!

This is the third in this series and follows Brendan Douglas as he attempts to correct the evil that he has unleashed on the world. It started out very slow for me but then about halfway through began to pick up. The author left a few things hanging for me, but really a nice job of finishing the series. I love this author's writing and her combination of historical setting and supernatural world. It's so intriguing to me. In this story Brendan has come back from the dead and meets up with his former fiance - Elizabeth, right before she is to marry again. But the evil Malaedor is after her and so Brendan kidnaps her. This is such an interesting relationship and the author takes time to develop it. Elizabeth has known Brendan since he was a young man and she had a crush on who she thought he was. 7 years are gone and they come together as very different people. Brendan is a difficult character to like, he has done some terrible things. And Elizabeth is not always easy to like either. This author does not do easy characters in her stories, which is one of the reasons I like them so much. The ending is well done and the story concludes in an unusual way.

Not quite as confusing as previous two novels in trilogy but still has areas of fuzziness. An exciting finish to the series as Brendan Douglas struggles to right the wrongs that he has initiated and attempts to protect those whom he cares about, including the woman (Elisabeth Fitzgerald) whom he jilted seven years prior. Unfortunately, he needs her help and inadvertently thrusts her into the middle of the evil Maleodor's plans for world domination. An unexpected four-legged ally accompanies them on a quest which may end in tragedy for everyone but the strong connection forged between Brendan and Elisabeth may give them an edge nobody has planned for. Good strong finish to the series.

A perfectly wonderful and magical ending to this engaging trilogy. This book had just the right amount of blending to keep it driven but romantic. Rickloff was ruthless in her delicious weaving of danger and desire, could hardly put this one down! I loved the paranormal twist to the regency timeframe. New and exciting!

I have enjoyed this story, especially the writing and historical setting. I have not read the first 2 books and am anxious to do so as soon as possible.

I tried for months to read it. I never liked either character. Never cared if they rekindled their romance. Finally, I gave up having only read half the book.
