I hate story lines where lies and deceit are the main device throughout, especially with such an abrupt ending but one cannot get around the great writing and can't put down aspect here.

Patrik Cleary MacGruder, though he doesn't use that last name
…is on a mission for Scotland when he stumbles on a naked woman who's about to be raped by English soldiers. He kills them and he and she go on the run from the wrath of other English soldiers. He reckons he'll drop her off with friends and finish his mission.
Turns out the woman, who gives her name as Cristina Moffat, is in fact Emma Astyn, an English mercenary in the employ of evil Hugh de Cressingham. Her task is to seduce Patrik, learn the name of the spy in Edward's ranks, and obtain a missive Patrik is carrying. Oh, and kill him if she finds it convenient. So the rape thing was a setup. Not a very well thought-out one, in that Emma failed to consider that Patrik (who is a famous assassin) might, like, kill the soldiers who were helping her establish credibility. She guilts a little over getting the men killed but not as much as I'd expect if she really didn't see this coming.
She was right about one thing, though—coming upon an apparently Scottish woman apparently being raped by English soldiers was a good way to make sure Patrik would protect her. Now all she has to do is finish the mission.
Yeah, love can be damned inconvenient sometimes.
Cosby gets points for working real people (Cressingham, among others) into her story, which is set against William Wallace's rebellion. Also, I always like it when the heroine is not some shrinking violet. Add in some good adventure and believable development of the heroine's character (that said, the romance comes too early—there's a reason but it still kind of robs the reader of the chance to watch the relationship grow). Magic rocks aside, this one gets a solid 3.5 stars.

Another predictable but light hearted read.

I found the storyline twist at the beginning of the book very surprising and entertaining! This was an enjoyable read that wove it’s characters through the Scottish and English time of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace and their rebel fight to free Scotland from the English rule of Long Shanks. This was a passionate love story during uncertain times where sides were changed back and forth and you never knew who you could trust, therefore, survival was a game of chess. I look forward to reading the other brothers stories.

Every MacGruder brothers book was excellent, but Patrick's story was the most emotional for me. Diane Cosby has become one of my favorite authors. She puts so much realism into both her characters and the story. Her writing style let's you "see" everything...the people, the scenery...and "feel" every emotion and every action and reaction of the characters. It is a true pleasure to read her books.

This is the first book I've read in this series - so now I need to go back and read the earlier three. I really enjoyed the story, although at times I really had to concentrate to follow the historical storyline that was the background to what was actually going on in the book. I loved the fey elements.

This was a good book, it hit the ground running, but I think that parts of this were really hard to swallow.
We have England's finest, and highest paid mercenary, Emma Astyn (year is 1297)and yet she never behaves like a spy. Not once. I get that from Patrik's point of view she was a helpless young woman, but even from Emma's point of view, she doesn't think/act like a spy. With the exception of her competency with a knife, she had no spy skills whatsoever.
Emma is England's finest mercenary and she is hired to infiltrate Patrik's rebel group and find out everything she can, but the biggie, her number 1 priority is to steal a message that holds rebel info and their next move. This writ is on its way to a certain bishop who is a key player in the rebellion. He will then give it to William Wallace. So Emma pretends to be Cristina, Scottish lass who is about to be raped by 4 English knights. Who comes to her rescue (as planned by Emma/Cristina)? Patrik of course. What bothers me about this plan, is that she is told by he's a blackguard, has a dark heat, is an evil barbarian, yet she's willing to bank on him saving her, a random damsel in distress? That logic doesn't follow.
Once she and Patrik are together, he stirs things in her she has never felt before. They bond, they laugh, they love, and then Cristina/Emma betrays him. I'm a sucker for the big betrayal plot line because I love seeing them make up. I loved the scene where Cristina/Emma had to prove herself loyal, and no one believed her (why should they? she's lied to everyone and is an English spy). She proves herself, though, and I loved how she handled Patrik's brothers. There were hints of the mystical too, which was pretty cool to see.
This has the makings of an excellent novel, but it just didn't quite deliver. I think that once Emma and Patrik realize they have feelings for each other, the fact that she was still thinking about stealing the writ was soo wrong. I mean, she's telling us she now realizes she was hired by the bad guys, and that Patrik and the rebels are just trying to live their lives and find a bit of peace, and yet she's still willing to give this information to her employer? Total fail.
It really is a good storyline, and I don't mind suspending belief for the female spy in the 13th century, but the author really needed to deliver on that end, especially since the heroine wasn't blackmailed into doing the dirty work, or she wasn't a noblewoman who was new at it. This was an orphan from the streets, a woman who chose this profession. She was England's finest spy. Other than that, I'd say that their romance was believable, and the brothers and their wives (from the previous books in the series) were great to see, and the action scenes felt accurate. The ending was abrupt, but I really thought the leading action was good. As you can see I did rate it 3.5 flames, so I did like the book, I just had a hard time believing the heroine was a spy.

What more does he have to loose? That type of thinking makes Patrik a great asset for Scotland’s cause against the English. But he should be asking himself, what is he missing he could possibly gain?
Patrik is a man doing his duty to his country, even going as far as sacrificing his potential happiness for it. He has already lost his brother’s due to actions meant to protect family and country. Patrik is once again in a similar situation he was in years ago. And as years ago he has to decide to overcome his prejudice or suffer loss.
Emma is a strong skilled woman, a perfect match for this Scottish warrior. Too bad she knows he would also kill her if he knew her secrets. That doesn’t stop her from trying to find out all of his.
A wonderful historical romance, Cosby has written another great addition to the MacGruders series.

Good, but not quite as good as his brothers' books, mostly because the idea that the rest of his brothers didn't check more closely to make sure he was dead is tough to accept, and the notion that someone would keep his survival from the others is even stranger. Once I got past that, the book is excellent, which is not surprising. This author is an expert, producing finely crafted stories that make me smile, laugh, and cry, in between envisioning phenomenal scenery and smelling great food. And feeling the wind. There is a lot of wind, rain, and heavy forest. I like that in a book, I guess. I think I'll go read some more ...

What an awesome story... After having met Patrik Cleary MacGruder in the previous MacGruder stories we what he has done. Now we have Christina Moffat/Emma Astyn who also must come to terms with her deceptions. The redemption of two characters is what this book is all about and their journey to allow each other love!
Diana Cosby so came through here in "His Destiny". Never was there a moment of boredom, I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Diana Cosby does it again with a real page turner that is hard to put down. This book is part of a series but each novel is stand alone so no need to read the others first but once you read her work you will want to read them all. I am personally so excited that in this story we learn grandma Macgruder has left another stone.. so maybe there will be another book...I sure hope so! enjoy!

This was okay. I liked Patrick but Christina's whole personality was a bit too confusing and convoluted. The ending of the book seemed rushed as well and the distances they all seemed to travel on foot seemed a bit far-fetched as well. All in all, an okay read but nothing special.

Ok, the last part of the story seemed a bit rushed. Still a cute little romance, but I liked the first 3 books a tad bit more.
