Long Trail Home was an enjoyable read! I usually like Vickie McDonough's books, and I'm happy to say this one didn't disappoint. The faith theme was really lovely, and the two POV characters engaging. While I probably won't keep this on my bookshelf, I'm glad I read it and I hope someone else gets the chance to enjoy it. *smiles* Looking forward to reading more of the TEXAS TRAILS series.

Vickie McDonough in her new book, “Long Trail Home” Book Three in The Texas Trail Series published by River North Fiction Division of Moody Publishers takes us to Texas in 1865.

From the Back Cover: A weary soldier returns from the War Between the States to Discover his parents dead, his family farm in shambles, and his fiancée married.

Riley Morgan takes a job at the Wilcox School for Blind Children in an attempt for a new life after the Civil War. By helping the children and the pretty blind woman, Annie, he begins to find renewed hope. But everyone’s future at Wilcox School is disrupted when the owner dies suddenly and the school is in jeopardy of being closed by the man who stands to inherit it. Riley’s remaining confidence in the future is shaken when Annie’s secret is revealed and Riley attempts to make peace with God.

Doubt meets hope, and fear gives way to faith in the Morgan family.

“Long Trail Home” is another romance set against the backdrop of Texas. Vickie McDonough takes up the story of the Morgan family that was begun in the first book, “Lone Star Trail” and continued in “Captive Trail” (though you do not have to read those books to enjoy this one, but it helps). Me, I really like Westerns. I like what authors can do with them and Vickie McDonough really knows how to write a Western. A School For The Blind That Annie and Riley work at is going to be sold unless these two can do something. Doesn’t seem to sound like much but let me tell you this is an exciting book. In addition to being suspenseful it is also a romance. Then there is the theme of starting over and putting the past behind you which isn’t always easy, as in the case with Annie. There is also the theme of defending those that need defending. If you enjoy history like I do then this book is for you. Ms. McDonough really makes you feel the heat and the dust and the danger. Every one of her characters seem to come alive and it is like you are there at the School fighting for it along with Annie and Riley. “Long Trail Home” continues being all about families and relationships and that is what makes this book a winner. I enjoyed this book a lot and am looking forward to the next one.

Long Trail Home by Vickie McDonough Book 3 of A Morgan Family Series

Riley Morgan is a nephew to Jud Morgan & Billie Morgan from book 1 & 2. His father, Calder had moved the family from Victoria area to Waco. When Riley's little brother, Timothy had died he took off and joined the army. Four years later he is heading home. When he reaches the family ranch he realizes life will not be the same ever again, bad things had happened while he was gone. When he goes to see his fiance he finds she had married as someone else. Tired, worn and smelly he goes and asks if he can help repair some fences and such at the Wilcox School for the Blind in exchange for food. Laura Wilcox offers him room and board in the barn if he will stay on and help. Many of the ex-soldiers had turned to raiding homes and it would be good for them to have a man around. So Riley stays.

Annie Sheffield had a new life for the past seven years, the only problem was she had to pretend to be blind. As a youngster her father took her from town to town. They earned their food by stealing. In Waco that first night he pushed her to steal a watch from a young man. She had heard a street preacher a few months back say stealing was a sin and she no longer wanted to do it, and this watch was special to the young man. But if she wanted to eat and not get her pa angered, she would do it. After stealing the watch and hiding out for a night, Annie discovered her pa had left her. That was when she saw the kids at the school were all fed, clean and dressed well. Laura knew she could see but the rules to live in the home were only blind children. When Riley came into the picture it changed Annie's life. She could not do many of the chores she had done without him noticing she was not blind. But he stayed on.

Laura also has a story. At thirty-four she is still single. The man she loved years ago made her choose between him or the school. She felt a strong calling to start the school and help the children to learn to live the best they could with their blindness. Sean Murphy was a blacksmith in town and Laura would see him at church but they never spoke. After all those years could a spark remain between them?

This story also shows how capable people can be even with a disability. Instead of being coddled and useless these children in the school are taught to do chores and live a life as normal as possible.

These first three books of this series are all so well written. They flow together as if there is one author. And they don't shy away from real life. There is death and diseases. Good and bad people. Love and hate. War and peace. There will be three more books coming out in 2012 by these same three authors.

Third in a series of Texas Trails stories of the early days in the State of Texas, "Long Trail Home" is the story of Riley Morgan returning from the War Between the States to his home only to find it devastated by an Indian raid and his family all dead and buried. Enter the scene a lovely blind young lady working in a home for blind children.

The story-line deals with the desperation of a young destitute and abandoned girl who finds what she needs in the home of a kind lady who schools and tends to the needs of a house full of blind children. The story-line also deals with the bitterness of a young man who has gone through the horrors of war only to come home to complete loss - family, home, and fiance.

The redemption of souls is always a beautiful story and in this book it takes on the beauty of redeeming grace and the grace of forgiveness.

Series connectivity: In Long Trail Home, book 3, Riley Morgan is a nephew of Jud Morgan and Billie Morgan from books 1 and 2 of the Texas Trails Series. Each of these books has a different author and yet the flow of the story or stories and styles merge so it would seem as though one author was writing. Character development is great in each of the books. Three more books in this series are on the horizon for 2012 release.

Long Trail Home is the third in the Texas Trails series which follows the Morgan family through different generations. I didn't feel that it added much historical and emotional appeal as the other two and it would serve better as a stand alone novel.

This inspirational romance follows Riley Morgan as he journey home from the Civil War. When he finally arrives in his hometown of Waco after years of bloody brutal battles, he discovers that his parents had been murdered by a tribe of Indians and his fiance married someone else. So clearly his life sucks. But this guy is a trooper. He cries for like a day and moves on. He can't bear to stay in his childhood home because there is nothing left for him there so he convinces the lady that runs the School for the Blind to let him room for free if he makes repairs around the place. While there he starts to fall for a young woman who has quite a sinister past as well.

Annie, took shelter at the school of the blind when she was just a young child. Her mother was dead and her father abandoned her in Waco so she faked blindness so she could seek refuge in the only place that would take her. For seven years she's lied to everyone in the community and the only one that knows her secret is Laura, the headmistress. As she starts to develop feelings for Riley she feels as if she needs to tell him of the deception but then they receive the news that the school is to be shut down, the timing is awful. Oh what will they do?!

For fans of breezy inspirational novels and light historical fiction.

Long Trail Home by Vickie McDonough
Texas Trails Series from River North….Moody Publishers

The Morgan family saga continues with Riley Morgan returning to his home in Waco, Texas, excited about seeing his mom and dad, and wanting forgiveness from him for leaving like he did. It just didn’t happen that way though. Riley returned to find an empty house, no one too welcome him home or tell him what happened.

Riley ends up helping out a friend that is in charge of a school that takes care of blind children. He is happy to live in a room in the barn, do repairs and upkeep to the badly need buildings and such around the farm in exchange for room and board, and of course the wonderful meals he would enjoy.

What Riley didn’t anticipate was falling for one of the ladies at the school. Annie, who was also blind or so he thought. Was she?

I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in this series, and this one didn’t disappoint. Vickie McDonough brings her expert writing skills to the series with a story that will capture your being and keep you instilled into the pages until the very end. The characters are truly believable and realistic, giving you the feeling that you’ve known them for a very long time!

I really encourage you to visit River North, the fiction division of Moody Publishers, and check out the Six books in this series. I will assure you, if you read one, you will have to read them all!

This book was provided by River North Fiction for me to read and review. I was not required or expected to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are mine only.

Long Trail Home is a compelling story about forgiveness and ultimately coming back home. Not only in the natural but in the spiritual.

We follow the story of Laura, Annie and Riley. Laura is the instructor of a school for blind children. She has sacrificed her own long term dreams for the children that she loves and adores. But when the school has been threatened to be shut down, will those dreams resurface? Annie, once was a homeless orphan. Now she has a family at the school, but will her deception be her undoing? She has found God's forgiveness but will her fellow man be as forgiving? Riley, a soldier come home to devastation after the war has found peace and refuge working at the school. But will he ever find "home" again?

I enjoyed Long Trail Home. Although the story line was a bit slow at times, there is enough action to keep it going and Vickie McDonough relays a great message. Forgiveness is the main basis of the story. God's forgiveness of the sins we have committed. Forgiveness of our selves. And the forgiveness of others. Coming clean and telling the truth can be the hardest thing to do at times. Especially when we are afraid of what others think. But the best thing we can do for our selves is to walk in the truth and trust that our Heavenly Father will care for us and protect us and lead us home.

As a young girl, Annie is forced by her father to steal becoming an expert pickpocket. When her father finally abandons her in Waco, TX, she comes across a school for the blind and decides to pretend to be blind to have the safety and love the children there know.

Fast forwarding a few years, Riley Morgan returns from the war to find his parents dead and his fiance married. Taking a job at the Wilcox School for the blind, he finds himself becoming more and more interested in the pretty, blind young woman that works there.

This is book #3 in the Morgan Family Series, a series which I am thoroughly enjoying reading. I like the characters and the story lines. However, this one dropped a star for trying to convince you that for all of these years, Annie has been able to fool everyone in town except the two women who work at the school. Incident after incident should have completely given it away, especially to Riley. That was just unbelievable. Over all, though, it was a good story that I enjoyed reading.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

LONG TRAIL HOME is the third book in the Texas Trails - A Morgan Family series (written by three different authors), but it easily stands alone. In fact, I read the series completely out of order, and it didn't seem to make a difference.

I felt really sorry for Riley, going through the horrors of the war, and then coming home to discover his whole family is dead and his future destroyed. I also felt for Annie who believed she had to lie in order to live at the school of the blind and deceive people. I wished she'd tell Riley the truth early on... I don't like it when relationships are based on a lie. The black moment felt rather contrived to me, but it worked out pretty much the way I figured it would early on, so in that way it was predictable. In another way, there was an unexpected twist at the end that worked it out even better than my initial predictions.

If you like historical fiction, you won't want to miss LONG TRAIL HOME or any of the other books in this series: A Rangers Trail, Captive Trail, Cowgirl Trail, Lone Star Trail, and End of the Trail (not necessarily written in the right order.)

This is the third book in this series by three authors. This book is set just after the civil war and is a good read. Riley has arrived back home to find his parents are dead and his girlfriend had married another man. He's devastated and not sure what to do. Meanwhile Annie had been living in the Wilcox School for the blind and is finally in a home where she is loved and wanted. I love how we see the continuing Morgan saga but also that the book can be read alone without the reader being confused. This book shows how people treat people with disabilities differently, we see how people shout to the children and Annie assuming being blind makes you deaf also. They also look at Annie as pretty till they find out shes blind then shes ignored. Its sad to think because of a disability people are treated differently and as if they are a burden when infact they can manage quite well. This book deals with acceptance, trust, honesty, and we see Annie being convicted of something she has been hiding and wants to be honest about. Great read.

This review is also posted on Book by Book.

Following Darlene Franklin’s and Susan Page Davis’ contributions to the Texas Trails series (respectively, Lone Star Trail and Captive Trail), Vickie McDonough successfully adds Long Trail Home. Telling the story of Riley Morgan as he returns from war and changing the scenery a bit by taking place in the town of Waco, Texas, this novel is equally as enjoyable as the previous two novels. As the characters learn to embrace the possibilities of the future, despite the hardships of the past, the story proves to be romantic and encouraging with a touch of suspense. It’s a great read for fans of the Texas Trails series (though could easily be read on its own), and now, I look forward to reading the next novel, A Ranger’s Trail.

Thanks to Moody Publishers, I received a copy of Long Trail Home and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

My daughter (12) and I are loving this series! Even though we are reading them all out of order so it is taking some figuring out, but I get them when and where I can.
This book stood strong right along with the others. It has a troubled hero running from God and a confused, beautiful, young woman who bowls him over and helps bring him back to God even though she was the one searching.
I gave this book only 4 stars because I found it too big of a stretch that a girl could fool a whole town AND the man she's falling in love with, into believing that she's blind for so many years. If she wore dark glasses...maybe. But she would look right at things, even his eyes once in a while and with a school full of blind kids he couldn't tell the difference?
Other than that...4 thumbs up!!

When Annie Sheffield is thirteen, her life goes from bad to worse when her father abandons her in Waco, Texas. With nowhere else to go, she pretends to be blind in order to have a home at the Wilcox School for Blind Children.
Several years later, her peaceful life is rocked when a returning Civil War veteran, Riley Morgan, takes a job as handyman at the school. Annie is drawn to him, but cannot reveal the fact that she’s sighted or she’ll have to leave the only real home she’s ever known.
Long Trail Home is filled with memorable supporting characters. I particularly enjoyed Sean Murphy, the blacksmith. This engaging story takes the reader on the Long Trail Home to a heartwarming conclusion.
Fans of McDonough’s Texas stories will love this one. I know I did.

This was a sweet, enjoyable story. It alternated between the viewpoints of Annie, Riley, and the headmistress Laura. Each are struggling with fears and obstacles, but lean on each other for strength. I did find it hard to believe that Riley couldn't figure out that Annie was not blind. There also seemed to be an easy solution to Annie's dilemma- why couldn't Laura feed and board her in exchange for her work at the home- without the pretense of blindness? I liked the setting of a school for blind children and the compassion which was a major theme of the novel.

In her usual style of fine writing, Vickie McDonough once again comes out with another winner. I love Vickie's style of writing. The characters are well developed and she delves deep into what makes them tick. She touches on sensitive issues and handles them with the grace. It's a moving story that keeps you pulling for both the hero and heroine to be able to overcome the obstacles in their lives and the issues that keep them apart. I highly recommend Long Trail Home.

Loved this book. I rarely rate a book a 5 but I guess everyone has their scale. However, a 4 is really high on my list. I wish there was a way to give 4.5 stars! That's what I would give this one. I LOVED the Gospel message delivered clearly AND COMPLETELY. So often an author will take you to the trough but not show you how to drink. This author was very clear. I enjoyed this one all around. Nice story, not too heavy, and just enough of everything.

I thought that this was a really good historical romance, with a nice dose of religious undertones. I enjoyed reading about the struggles each of the characters went through. I liked how the book helped both Annie and Riley with forgiving themselves, finding God and telling the truth (to ones self or someone else). Very nicely written.
