If a persocom's memories are stored on a hard drive, are they real? After all, a hard drive can simply be erased. This question has been driving Hideki mad as he searches for his kidnapped 'com, Chi. Hideki has always maintained that persocoms are just machines, but his heart tells him that there's something special about Chi, and he can't let her come to harm. As Hideki and friends follow the kidnapper's online footprints to his lair, a mysterious duo keeps watch on the proceedings with great concern. Chi has proven once before that she holds the potential to be quite dangerous, despite her innocent exterior. Should her self-defense mechanism activate again, it could prove even more destructive. The clock is ticking, both in Hideki's search for Chi and Chi's search to complete herself.
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
The kidnapping plot is resolved. The author of the mysterious books is revealed … to us. It's much too early for Chi or Hideki to know who it is yet. And we get some interesting revelations about Yumi’s past, which will probably be developed further in the next volume.
Things are chugging along nicely. Only three more volumes to go. Recommended!
That dual personality aspect of Chi is interesting and I hope it shows more in next volumes. Also, I'm glad a number of things cleared up in this volume. On a side note, I want more mushiness between Hideki and Chi. :3
And now I have to wait until after my vacation, haha. Things got a lot exciting in this one, Chi is still kidnapped and we see how she is doing with the rotten dude who took her, I really liked Kotoko she was adorable! Hideki and his friends are doing all they can to find and help Chi. I loved it. I also loved that Chi went into Chobit mode (as I would call it). I loved that the guys in black aren't that bad, yes, I read the story before but that was years and years ago. I would love to know more about them. I love the picture books and love reading them, would love to see them for real though. I hope that the next volumes give us some more answers! I want those. Also, more bakery owner and Yumi.
I’m actually intrigued by the plot, I remember most of this story but I definitely don’t remember what Chi actually was made for and whatnot, looking forward to finding out.
Chi gets rescued, but not before she drops a bomb: no one but "that person just for me" is allowed inside me (where her on/off switch is conveniently located). A robot who wants to remain a virgin until marriage? Apparently Chi's quest, as per Hideki's landlady's husband (who is no longer with us but somehow involved in this), is to give all persocoms the ability to be happy. I'm unsure about her "dark half" and how this is all going to be resolved, even if Chi and Hideki end up together.
I'm also still wondering about the spy-looking pair who seem to be searching for Chi but mostly are just hanging out on a roof somewhere. We find out a little more about Yumi and her involvement with the bakery manager, but not much else is revealed about her insecurities over not being as smart or pretty as a persocom.
Hideki may not know much about computers, but he does know he is lucky when he finds one abandoned on the trash. Computers with human appearance are increasingly more common and people are starting to prefer their company over fellow humans. Hideki is sure he knows his computer, named Chi, isn't human, yet he too can't help but react to her very human behaviour.
Chobits was one of my first manga and so it definitely gets nostalgia points. This is also one of my favourite works when it comes to CLAMP's art - it's gorgeous throughout! Chi has a beautiful design and, whether programmed or not, has such a cute personality. Hideki is also a nice guy - I mean, he's perfectly average and there's nothing that really stands out, yet I can't help but like him for his kindness.
The plot, however, isn't quite my thing. Even when I read it the first time around, I remember thinking it was moderately boring at parts and the finale was lacklustre. The characters are all likeable and it's nice how the supporting cast is included in the story, but there are just some elements that feel very off about this story. There is a certain amount of fan service which doesn't suit the rest of the story. The fanservice is nowhere as extreme as you can get it in other manga, but it didn't match well with the philosophical take CLAMP was trying to pull off.
To make matters worse, the whole philosophy aspect was a bit of a miss too. The story raises many questions along the lines of spending too much time with computers rather than fellow humans or what it means to love an object, one you know doesn't have a soul. Somehow, I feel as though CLAMP threw common sense into the wind and went with the less rational choice; loving objects is perfectly natural and equal to loving a human. I'd honestly rather have had some conclusion of computers being able to develop human emotion rather than just it's ok to love something that's not real.
I didn't quite get the point of the ending, there seemed a lot of build-up and drama but then nothing big happened. But even though I've had a lot to complain, I'd be lying if I'd say that I don't like Chobits. The beautiful art, the nice characters and many individual scenes really make up for the so-so plot - and of course, nostalgia.
This was the first manga I ever read: an 8-volume series by CLAMP titled Chobits. I loved the cute girl on the covers with her fancy dresses, but what was even more intriguing was the fact that she’s a computer! In these books, “persocoms” (humanoid computers) are the latest advancement in technology. When poor student Hideki finds Chi (the girl on the cover) tied up and abandoned in the trash, he takes her home, thinking he’s gotten himself a free piece of software. Only, when she boots up, he discovers that she’s not your average persocom – there’s much more to her than meets the eye.
What was so fascinating about this series is how it explored the relationship between human and technology. Computers and other pieces of tech are designed to make our lives easier, and the persocoms in this book are no exception. They function as store clerks, secretaries, personal assistants – all the functions of your laptop or smart phone, but with the ability to walk, talk, and interact like a person. Only it doesn’t end there. Throughout the series, there are examples of “relationships” between the persocoms and their humans. Whether or not an artificial life form can have feelings or fall in love is in fact the crux of this manga.
THIS is where I draw the line. I am so bored. I got halfway through this book and I felt NOTHING.
Loved the storybook, loved the idea of computers, actually liked the ecchi setting, liked the artstyle too. What I hated was that I didn't really feel much about these characters. While Chii can be somewhat excused, I don't really feel anything about anyone else. These characters have very bare backstories and motivations and all are only existing to help the protag and his hatsune miku doll's romance. What is happening??? The kidnapping got resolved so easily. And in a very lame way - what was that even???... I don't know. This is where I draw the line. :) Thank you. I really like the whole dilemma of 'but do computer's feelings matter?' dilemma, but I am sure I can find a better book or manga to read to find the answer.
Please don't get offended or take this review too seriously. Just because I didn't feel attached to these characters doesn't mean you can't be. Have a nice day. <3
Chobits is one the most memorable mangas of the early 20th century. Exploring the relationships that can be formed between humans and persocons, Chobits takes you to the heart of mending a broken heart anew. Chi, as she is named by Hideki, a rebooted persocom learns to interact with the world like a newborn. She slowly learns words other of "chi" and cares for her master Hideki. Hideki comes to care for Chi as time passes and learns of her mysterious past, the shadowy figure and the circumstances that lead him to finding her.
Originally I read Chobits as a child and found the characters and the story cute, romantic and simple. Today as an adult, I found it much less compelling. The characters design flawed, the image of the ideal woman could or are perceived as and the a very simplistic dialogue with nothing to show for. I would recommend X/1999 instead if you are looking for something from CLAMP.
Another very intriguing book in the Chobits series. I find myself contemplating the longterm logistics of a persocom that does not age and can break down, so depending on quality of make and capacity for upkeep, there’s a simultaneous “frozen” quality to one’s age and appearance, yet there is age in technology. And for those who are in relation with their persocoms, would they not have an arrested development? If persocoms are just meant to “serve,” I wonder what that would do societally speaking. We do see a couple of female characters struggling with being “replaced.” Yet we do not see the alternative for men. I find that interesting.
Still adore Chi and the cast as a whole, for the most part. Still, the precarious position that Chi’s reset button is placed is bizarre no matter how you think on it.
3.5 Stars, this volume was more of a wrap-up as we begin the final volumes of the series. Hideki rescues Chi only for her to wig-out and affect all the surrounding persacoms again. A quick update with Hibya revealing she indeed help create Chi and for some reason cannot interfere with her destiny currently. Also, Yumi used to work at the same bakery with Ueda and clearly has a history with him. Chi grapples with her emotions for Hideki and continues to hope he is the someone just for her. It's not a bad volume, but really more of a transitional one as plotlines are beginning to close.
This series is still very good. I am enjoying it, but I do wish we had more information. I guess that's the point though... I also wish that the book series she reads wasn't so vague and oddly worded...it feels confusing because of the way it is told. If you weren't involved in the story, the book would make no sense whatsoever. And how are they able to publish a book so fast?? All non important questions, but still I have them. Cant wait to finish the series!
Technically, a 3.75 out of 5. Things are getting really interesting now in terms of the story. I'm glad that Chi is safe and back with Hideki now. I know Hideki was really concerned about finding Chi. Her abilities really are different from other persocoms and it is interesting to see her development and her bond with Hideki deepen.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This volume felt the most nostalgic to me. I think a lot of the plot has been set up so well that we can read in a better flow. The fan service has also significantly calmed down, so we can just focus on the plot for once (thank god).
That aside, there were some particularly beautiful panels in this volume. The whole series is uniquely gorgeous of course, but this one just stood out to me.
