APA Citation: Kirschmann, J., & Inc. Nutrition Search, (2006). Nutrition Almanac (6th ed.). New York, NY: McGraw Hill Publishing.
Call Number: Ref 613.2
Reference: Almanac
Relevance & Relationship: There are several classes within the Home Economics Department that would benefit from this resource. For example the basic cooking class, nutrition class, foods and beverages class. This book is $21.95 but can be found for less expensive online. This is the only nutrition type of reference almanac.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to inform readers about essential vitamins and minerals. It also will help readers make better choices for foods, specifically what food can help cure common ailments and what foods can make a person feel bad. The book compares good versus bad fats, which food ingredients and additives to avoid, and gives an introduction to several herbs. Overall the information contained in the book should help improve your health, control your weight, and increase energy.
Validity: Joan Price of Amazon.com gives the book an overall positive review citing up to date and accurate information besides the height/weight charts which Prices states are irrelevant.
Format: This resource is a print media. The book is written with two columns and has numerous bulleted lists throughout the book. There are also smaller sections based on the type of information that are labeled with larger, bold text.
Arrangement & Presentation: The table of contents is very user friendly and includes titles with issues associated with the title in alphabetical order. There is also an index provided in alphabetical order for easy access to key terms.
Diversity: This book can provide useful information on foods and nutrition no matter what cultural or academic background. There are not any other reference nutrition almanacs available, and no other nutrition references were this in depth with 384 pages and a long list of additional references.
