Bobbie Faye #1

Charmed and Dangerous

Rate this book
Previously published as Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad A NovelWhen Bobbie Faye wakes up on the morning of the Lake Charles Contraband Days Festival, she's looking forward to balloons, booze, and babies in pirate costumes. Instead, she discovers that her trailer's flooded, her no-good brother's been kidnapped, and the criminals are demanding her mom's tiara as ransom.Soon Bobbie Faye is committing (unintentional) bank robbery and (fully intentional) car jacking to retrieve her family heirloom. The one bright spot comes in the hard-muscled, impossibly sexy form of Trevor, the guy whose truck she just took hostage. Luckily, Bobbie Faye knows how to outsmart angry bears, drive a speedboat, and handle a gun. As for handling Trevor? No gun-shyness there. Now, if only that pesky state police detective, who also happens to be a pissed-off ex-boyfriend, would stay out of her way . . .

Toni McGee Causey

14 books265 followers
Toni McGee Causey is the author of the critically acclaimed and nationally bestselling “Bobbie Faye” novels—an action/caper series set in south Louisiana; the series was released in back-to-back publications, beginning with CHARMED AND DANGEROUS, GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE GUNS, and WHEN A MAN LOVES A WEAPON. She is also a contributor to the USA Today Bestselling anthology LOVE IS MURDER, as well as the KILLER YEAR and the DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS anthologies.

While pursuing an MFA in Screenwriting, Toni had scripts optioned by prominent studios and recently produced an indie film, LA-308, which now has offers of distribution pending. Toni began her career by writing non-fiction for local newspapers, edited Baton Rouge Magazine, and sold articles to places like Redbook and Mademoiselle. In her copious spare time, she practiced her Ninja skills, though she can’t prove it because no one ever saw her.

She and her husband, Carl, thrive in the French Quarter, where they’re not the craziest ones on the block. Sometimes, they’re not even second craziest. She and Carl have also owned and operated a civil construction company for over thirty years [hence, the crazy], with projects all over Louisiana, Mississippi, and south-eastern Texas. They are also working on a home/remodeling project in the Quarter. Her grown sons survived her (they might say ‘barely’ but they don’t get to write the bio, ha!), with one becoming a SWAT police officer and one becoming a Firefighter. [In other words, Toni rarely sleeps.] Meanwhile, she and Carl are absolutely frothing-at-the-mouth proud of the two g-kids and three step-ish-g-kids (it’s complicated, but it’s all good).

One day, when she’s grown up enough, she’s going to get another puppy. This may take a while.

This book series really reminded me of the Stephanie Plum books and I'd recommend it to fans of that series, especially those of the Team Ranger persuasion. =) It was actually funnier than the Stephanie Plum books. It started out quick and just kept barreling along. Plus it took place in Louisiana, which I'm a fan of.

Apparently at some point, around when book three came out I guess, someone decided to change the titles of the first two books and I don't know why. The titles of the first two are much more amusing and I love the covers with the crawfish(?) critter on them.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.

My first Bobbie Faye book was "Girls Just Wanna Have Guns," which I liked a lot.

I expected I'd like this -- the kickoff to the series -- just as well. I didn't.

The pace here was too frenetic.

Bobbie Faye's personality and humor are just as vivid and distinctive, but I just didn't care all that much.

And the Trevor-v.-Bobbie-Faye love buzz was much more sexy in the "Girls Just Wanna."

I found myself skimming, just following the plot, due to an excess of dangers and near misses. Analogy: this was for me the book equivalent of watching a hyper-high-action movie, where I zone out because there're just too many special effects.

Action-packed and so much fun to read!

OVERALL RATING: 4.5 STARS

~The Characters~

People who know Bobbie Faye (or know of her) equate her with a disaster. What's funny about that is she never intentionally does anything to cause chaos; it just seems to follow her. She has a strong sense of loyalty to her family, even though her siblings keep taking advantage of her. That would usually be a pet peeve of mine, but what I liked about Bobbie Faye is that she's never whiny about her life. She just seemed to accept her lot and is trying hard to keep going and survive.

The people who care about her, like CeCe and Cam (her ex), lament that she's become so self-reliant and never asks for help, but my heart sympathizes with Bobbie Faye because she had to learn that the hard way through experience. I have the same mindset and could totally relate.

I also love that she's not without skills, which surprised people (aka Trevor), like her shooting and knowledge of boats (including how to hotwire one).

Reading Cam's POV made me sympathize with him and hurt about what could've been between him and Bobbie Faye, but it also made me see why they weren't right for each other. Still, a (tiny) part of me wishes for an alternate reality where they could be together (because he's still so freaking in love with her).

Bobbie Faye: “He doesn't want to be in love with me... And that makes all the difference in the world.”

Trevor doesn't have his own POV, but seeing him from Bobbie Faye's eyes got me sold on him. The way he treated her was so special and new to her (which sucks because honestly, it was bare minimum). I love that he accepted her and even delighted in her quirks instead of being annoyed with her, which is what Bobbie Faye expected. He never blamed her for anything that happened except for the ones she did do and even saved her multiple times. To a woman who's been on her own for a long time, finding someone she can lean on in times of crisis is a gift. She even started to spiral a few times while they were on the run, and Trevor was always there to hold her together.

“I'm here, Sundance. For you. I told you that you could count on me.”

Nina (Bobbie Faye's best friend) and Ce Ce (her employer) were also interesting and full of secrets. I'm eager to learn more about them and find out what those secrets are. I enjoyed Alex's appearance too (Bobbie Faye's ex, who is a gunrunner, and determined to get his stuff from her, which turned out to be love poems - good love poems according to Bobbie Faye).

Another thing that made me laugh every time is how people in that area of the world (or Louisiana) instantly recognize Bobbie Faye and hold her in some kind of reverence for being the Contraband Days Queen. I adore this book for giving me a glimpse of the vibe/culture in Louisiana.

~The Plot/Writing~

I see other reviewers comparing it to Stephanie Plum/Janet Evanovich's writing, and I agree. Everyone's a comedian in this book, and it really shouldn't be taken too seriously. It's also interesting because this book is told from multiple POVs (and in third person, too!), which could be jarring to readers who are used to only reading POVs from the MCs. This caused the story to progress slowly, but it didn't affect my enjoyment at all. It's crazy to realize that the whole book/story happened in just one day!

DO I RECOMMEND THIS? Heck yes, I do.

WILL I REREAD IN THE FUTURE? Yes, probably many more times.

First: This book was rereleased as "Charmed and Dangerous," with a few editing changes and a new cover. No, Amazon nor the publisher specify this anywhere.

This book is a tour de force that will keep you up long past your bedtime! Causey writes that a reader once told her she read the book while in the shower because she couldn't put it down, and I believe it! This book is the perfect mix of humor, adrenaline, and a little romance. I laughed so hard I cried!

Causey's writing style is wonderfully unique, and I could recommend this book based on that alone. If you are interested in different writing styles, take note!

I have read and re-read this book, recommended and gifted it to friends. Causey has been compared to Janet Evanovich, but personally I think she packs more action and humor in one book than Evanovich does in five.

I very rarely rate five stars, but this book deserves it. It is truly a little known gem of a novel. The sequels only get better, get all three at once and save yourself the wait! There are also two short stories on Causey's website that are worth reading, a prequel and one set between books 2 and 3. I would actually recommend reading the "prequel" after the first book, you will appreciate and understand it more.

Yeehaw ! What a ride this book was. This girl Bobbie Faye, has the worst and the best kind of luck all thrown into a hurricane and then flung at her. She is southern fried, hot headed, stubborn and smart and willing to face whatever she has too full on. Her love life is a mess, her home life is a mess, now her whole life is a mess. it all began with a water leak, a rotten brother and a tiara. There are Cops, FBI, Gunrunners, Voodo-ists, bank robbers and a couple sexy men to liven things up a bit.
Everyone is a bit afraid of her

This book did not have a dull moment. I was lucky to catch my breath between disasters. It was fun, light and very entertaining. I plan of reading the rest of her adventures. Come on down to Louisiana and visit with her for some fun.

Started this book last year but didn't get past the first few pages. Picked it up again as a sort of palate cleanser from reading another genre and read all three books in the series in a little over a week.

I'm not going to lie, there is so much over-the-top-ness in the book I really am surprised I enjoyed it so much. But I think that is the key - this was pure entertainment and that is exactly what I needed in my life right now.

I definitely think fans of Stephanie Plum will enjoy the humorous tone in this book but just picture the disasters Steph got into and multiply it by 100. If you were annoyed by Steph's antics in those books, I don't think you'll enjoy this series.

For me, though, there's a certain charm to Bobbie Faye's character that I just rolled with each disaster to see not only how she would handle it but how the characters around her would too. I enjoyed her interactions with Trevor and loved how she stayed front and center in most instances instead of playing back-seat driver to the big, strong hero. There's also a sort of romantic triangle with one of Bobbie Faye's ex-boyfriends who is a cop that is on Bobbie Fay & Trevor's trail as they run around trying to save her brother from kidnappers. Just a heads up because some people aren't a fan of the ol' triangle storyline.

Overall, a fun read that I hope will be released on audio because I think it's a great candidate to be brought to life, so to speak :)

This has to be the funniest book I have ever laid my hands on! I laughed till I cried for well over 30 minutes as I raced through the pages of the first 5 chapters. Bobbie Faye wakes up at 4am to a flooded out trailer, She finds out her brother is kidnapped and held for ransom over a worthless tiarra. The only shirt she can find to put on is a SHUCK ME, SUCK ME, EAT ME RAW babydoll tee. An electritian shows up to cut off her electrity, all while her trailer begins to collapse. Off to the bank she goes to get money for the electric company, where she accidentally robbs the bank. Then she kidnapps a man and the chase is on. The cops and the feds are after her and the action doesnt stop there. She soon finds herself at the bottom of the lake, being chased by a bear, captured by gunrunners, multiple explosions and so forth.

I can honestly say this is one of the BEST books i have ever read. Props to Toni McGee for this one. Im reading the sequel now and cant put it down. (hint she gets kidnapped 3 times within 15 minutes)

I highly reccomend her books! Happy reading

Bobbie Faye Sumerall wakes up to a trailer full of water from an overflowing washing machine and a phone call from her brother saying he's been kidnapped. She is instructed to bring the ceremonial tiara she wears in the Lake Charles Contraband Festival as its queen in order for her to get her brother, Roy back unharmed. Bobbie can't figure out what is so special about a cheap tiara, but she goes to her safety deposit box to get it. What follows is a series of disasters starting with Bobbie Faye interrupting a bank robbery in which she loses the tiara and leads to a chase across the bayou with a man named Trevor who seems to be helping her.

Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day is a gem of a story featuring an engaging mystery, exciting adventures, and a little romance. Bobbie Faye is a catastrophe that never ends as evidenced by the opening pages of the book that include a map showing several of the locations where she has caused extreme chaos. There are many laugh out loud moments as Bobbie Faye and Trevor try to save Roy while other supporting characters add humor of their own. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter also point to Bobbie Faye as the culprit in many earlier disasters. More emotion would have added another layer to this narrative, but overall, Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day is an entertaining novel that leaves this reader wanting more. 4 1/2 stars

This isn’t normally the kind of books I read since it had a bit more action than what I was used to. I found myself wondering wtf was going to happen next. I don’t think it’s enough for me to pickup the rest of the series but it was entertaining!

Oh. My. Lord. ! .

If you love Jennifer Crusie's Agnes and the Hitman, are you ever going to love Bobbie Fay! Bobbie Fay is like Agnes... on steroids! What an insane, hysterical, laugh till you cry (or die laughing!) riot of disasters! Heck, this series blows even Stephanie Plum right out of the water! I don't know how this author does it, but she. is. a. genius! The hits just keep coming, one right after the next, past, present and future, leaving the reader just as mind-boggled as the characters! I can't stop raving about it! I wish there were more than just three, and the novellas. I can't even...!

I don't think I've had this much fun reading a book since Stephanie Plum first arrived on the scene. The story of Bobbie Faye Sumrall, Contraband Festival Queen and walking natural disaster moves at the speed of light. Bobbie Faye is infamous throughout the state of Louisiana for being at the center of so many calamities that insurance companies publish maps identifying various locations where she has struck. (The map at the beginning of the book is for the 'south western region' and includes train derailments, fires and the "destruction of governor's motorcade (no fatalities)") On this particular bad day, Bobbie Faye wakes up to find her trailer flooding due to a broken pipe and in the midst of dealing with that receives a phone call informing her that her brother has been kidnapped and if she wants to see him alive again she must turnover the Contraband Queen tiara (a worthless peice of iron made by her great-great-great grandfather) as ransom. What follows is a roller coaster ride that never lets up.
I loved this book. Bobbie Faye is great character. Strong and brave but also vulnerable. As she makes her way through a truly bad day she finds herself involved in a bank robbery, takes a sexy ex-FBI agent hostage, blows up an oil rig, tangles with alligators and angry mama bears, and brushes up against several pissed off ex-boyfriends who run the gamet from a state police officer to the local gun-runner, all of whom are still in love with her. This is over the top stuff, but it is also laugh out loud funny. I have already ordered the second book in the series and can't wait to see what she gets up to next.

Oh boy, I want to meet Bobbie Faye. She is a fire cracker! I'm so glad for public libraries as I probably never would have found and read this book if it weren't for my library's New Release shelf. I would say that this is a comedic chick lit mystery... yep, I know, the lines are blurring more and more every day. :O)

Bobbie Faye wakes up one morning thinking that she will have the day to prepare for her home visit regarding her niece. Considering her explosive past (yes literally!), Bobbie should have known better. The fatalities include her trailer, her car, a bank, a truck, a boat... or maybe 2, or 3, or..., an oil rigger, a shack, a salt mine, a junk yard... and that is seriously just 1 day in Bobbie Faye's life. Since there is a very nice summary above in the book details I won't make you read any further summary by me. LOL

From the story line, I believe the author wants you to know that while this is an unbelievable day by our standards, it is a normal day in Bobbie Faye's life. That tells me that any sequel will be even funnier and loads of fun as well!

This book is very entertaining and I laughed through much of it. Her family and friends are a riot and the men in her life are just hot! If you find this at your library... GRAB IT! If you like to buy books... THEN BUY IT! I don't think you'll regret it.

2.5 Booker Hooker Stars

We were a bit divided on our thoughts on Charmed and Dangerous, but there were a few points that most of us agreed on.

What we liked: Most of us enjoyed the cute humor and some laugh-out-loud moments. It was especially easy to relate to for those us who are from small towns. While there was some disagreement on the characters, some liking Bobbie Faye, everyone liked both male leads.

What we didn't like so much: Charmed and Dangerous was WAY OVER-THE-TOP. Did you catch the all caps? It was pretty much like reading a book in all caps, all the time. The action was non-stop, which sounds like a good thing, but it gave us no breathing room...and that's not to mention that said action was just too much. Much of the book felt forced to some of us, as if the author was "trying" too hard to be the next Janet Evanovich and not quite getting there. There were also a few of us who found Bobbie Faye not too likeable or relateable.

Overall, this book packed a punch of fun, non-stop, one-day action, but for most of the Booker Hookers, it was simply too much.

I'd say this was about a 3 1/2 stars. There are a lot of good things about this book, but a couple that bugged me as well. Man, if you though Stephanie Plum was a disaster in the making, then you never met Bobbie Faye. I think her destruction total for this one book equaled about the first 5 books for Stephanie.

What I enjoyed:
* The quotes at the beginning of the chapters about Bobbie Faye.
* Bobbie Faye's willingness to do anything to save her family.
* Nice, fast pace of the book after the first few chapters.
* Cam and Trevor.

What could have been better:
* I hate love triangles, especially when both guys seem great.
* Based on the little bit of information given on their breakup, I totally side with Cam and it makes me dislike Bobbie Faye a bit.
* Bobbie Faye seems oblivious to all the people who care about her and want to help.
* The beginning of the book was a bit slow and kind of depressing.

Bobbie Faye's brother has a habit of getting himself into bad-women situations, but it is particularly bad when he is kidnapped by a gangster. Bobbie Faye that is currently taking care of her niece has to save him, while running from the cops, the FBI, ex-boyfriends, news reporters and a social services' assistant.

This book was suggested by Goodreads' algorithm since I like Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. I was utterly surprised to find this over the top in comparison, I never thought of Plum books as toned down but somehow they feel more realistic and I like their humour better. This was an entertaining action story though I missed being introduced to the characters and confused them a lot. The suspense did not work at all, and the end was written to make me buy the second book, which I did not enjoy since I am afraid the suspense is again poorly built.

This is a great read, if you need some laughs. The main character, Bobbie Faye Sumrall, is a caring person who defends her family and protects her niece and helps her brother, when he's in trouble. Known as the Contraband Days Queen, this mystery takes you all over the place in New Orleans. We understand why this bad day has gotten worse by the minute. And with every twist and turn, we're in for a surprise at the end. Every dog has its day, but for Bobbie Fays, she ends up with tons of rotten luck. There's a hint of romance and oodles of humor into this mystery series. When you think it couldn't worse for her, it did with tons of obstacles. This one is a hoot.

I enjoyed this book soo much! It was fast paced, funny, with a very interesting and distinctive heroine and a thorougly adventourous plot. I loved that when Bobbie Faye said she could do something, she really could (sometimes better than everybody) but at the same time she wasn't stupid - crazy, yes but she knew what she could handle and what she couldn't and she's always thinking with her head.

Oh LORD, this was funny! A tears-running-down-your-face funny. And what a fabulous character, that Bobbie Faye. We're quite fortunate that she's fictional. Because otherwise, well, most of us here in eastern Texas would just have to move to the other side of the state, away from Louisiana! That way, we could still enjoy reading about her without becoming innocent bystanders.

Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day

I give this book three and a half stars. This is another book that I wouldn't have read if it wasn't for my book club. It was cute and funny but a bit predictable. It sort of reminds me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series but not as funny.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover this was not a romance, since it seemed to be billed as one. I would class this as a combination of mystery and "chick lit", since it was much more focused on the humor and adventure. A fun, easy read, very humorous and engaging.

This was really more of a 3.5 for me. Almost would have been a 4, if not for a few details. If you are looking for a crazy fun summer read, this is it! I was so glad to see there are more. I plan to take the next installment on my beach vacation in a few weeks. Bobbie Faye is a whirlwind of a natural disaster, although with the best of intentions. She just creates havoc wherever she goes. Or rather, havoc Follows her, wherever she goes!

I love crazy, down and dirty characters, and this story is chock full of such people. Picture the crazy cousin that everyone has a story about....and then picture an entire town full of crazy cousins. That's about the gist of it. Although at times it was a little overboard with the redneck sterotypes (probably what knocked it down a notch for me), overall I thought it was a fun story with characters I can want to see more of. Hopefully the next story is just as good or better!

This book is well written, funny, adventurous and action packed! All my favorite attributes!
It’s full of mystery and surprises— but not too outlandish or carrying unbelievable plot twists, and packed with hilarious disasters from the quirky, yet just trying to survive, lovable main character. She has a rich history within her hometown she adores, but that doesn’t necessarily adore her back, (albeit the history is dysfunctional & not at all glamorous). She hasn’t had it easy, but she doesn’t dwell on her not so great past or circumstances- she does what she can to move forward.
I loved the character!

I liked all those aspects of the book along with several of the characters. I also thoroughly enjoyed that it hints towards a potential romance, yet it’s not at all a romance storyline or containing sex scenes, just gives a little flirty flirt and that’s refreshing to me.

Will definitely be reading the rest of the Bobbie Faye books!

Some plot holes seemingly, a little bit of repetitive language (that “geeky” boy), and the perspective changing was sometimes hard to follow. The quotes at the beginning of chapters were cheesy, but not bad; just go in expecting some corniness—in a fun way!

HOWEVER, this was an all-around exciting read with plenty of twists. Did it need to be quite this long? No, but I think it was because the author really loved these characters and the setting she created.

Definitely give it a go. I’m reading the rest of the books! :)

I picked out this book because it was on a list of funny mysteries. I thought it was a bad knock-off of the truly funny Miss Fortune series by Jana DeLeon. Both are set in the bayous of Louisiana. Both feature an attractive heroine and a studdly law official. But while the Miss Fortune series moves quickly, Bobbie Faye doesn't. While Miss Fortune has a cast of lovable and funny side kicks, Bobbie's were primarily annoying. And while both have some violent moments, Fortunes' tend more to the slapstick while Bobbie's are truly violent. Stick to Miss Fortune and don't read this series.

When somebody kidnaps Bobbie Faye's brother, she'll take on anyone that gets in the way of her getting him back. This includes police, FBI, angry ex boyfriends and organized crime. With a reputation for causing disasters and an unwillingness to ask anyone for help , she creates chaos as she tries to save her family.
With a bunch of offbeat characters and an ample amount of humour this was a fun book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely read more of this series.

This book was a thrill a minute action ride, and I highly recommend it to any Evanovich readers. This book has exploding gun shacks, bear attacks, and all manner of mayhem centered on Bobbie Faye, our heroine in whose wake destruction usually follows. It's set in Louisiana with a cast of colorful characters. I liked this book so much that I called the library to order the sequel the instant I finished it.
