Seasons of Change

Rate this book

Rhys Godfrey, Lord Vernon and Lady Beatrice Chalcroft had been betrothed since childhood in an arrangement made by their fathers. Unlike most arranged marriages, Vernon had loved Beatrice since the first time he saw her. The season they should have been married found the relationship severed by jealousy and pride. Beatrice was sent away from home to reform her spiteful behavior, and Vernon was hurt and determined to forego love.

Lord Vernon decides to move on with an unemotional marriage of convenience.

Lady Beatrice finds herself reduced from a duke's daughter to a life of service in Scotland trying to learn the ways of the less privileged.

Will the two find their way back together again? Or will Vernon choose another bride first? Will Beatrice be able to humble herself and reform her shrewish spoiled ways?

About the author

Elizabeth Johns

Like many writers, Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen's clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was "forced" to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author’s books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen’s wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing.
Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother of small children, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.

What a season

Great story about Rhys, Lord Vernon and Lady Beatrice. Beatrice is the daughter of a Duke but was spoiled by her mother to where she only thought of herself. She was engaged to Rhys but because of her pettiness against her cousin she is sent to Scotland to live at an orphanage. Little does she know how much it will change her life!

Oi, gente!

Having read the first book in this series I moved on to the second book, and I was equally enamored as I continued the saga of the Loring and Abbott family. Not only is it (again) well-written, but it shows us that second chances are indeed possible. It is a story full of emotion, redemption and forgiveness that will leave you totally satisfied.

This story expands more into the lives of the characters and gives insight into the minds of these characters and will make you love them even more than in the book one. Another wonderful story from Elizabeth! I am definitely going to read book 3! Highly recommended.

Another well written book by Elizabeth Johns! I went from disliking Beatrice to adoring her. She takes a seriously flawed character and redeems them. It is wonderful and refreshing. I love the story and the characters. On to part three now!

Resenha

Beatrice, introduced in Surrender the Past, did not seem redeemable. She was an arrogant spiteful cousin to the heroine Elinor. Consequences caught up with Beatrice in this book, in the shape of her father who put his foot down, a bit late to my way of thinking. Then she lost her long time fiance and was sent away to darkest Scotland to repent her sins. That's when the real story starts.

Beatrice goes through many changes, some more believable than others. There we meet three children who make up the series The Descendents, each with their own book. Dr Craig is introduced, also a major player through the rest of this series and others. And gets his own book in the Series of Elements.

I have saved the best for last, Rhys Godfrey, Lord Vernon. He loves Beatrice and she loves him, but between them they have a !ot of issues and a lot of walls. This is one problem with the book. The HEA is rushed. Beatrice and Rhys needed to talk more to get where they want to be. Not a stand-alone, should be read with the series.

This is an action-filled romance, with a lot of flawed characters who are able to change. I am not sure if real life people are as able to transform themselves, but one can only hope. I am also unsure how much forgiveness there is in the world, and sometimes it patches over injustice, but here it seems merited. A bitchy duchess spawns cruel offspring, but they both seek to atone for their sins in different ways. I always like a Scottish background, and the cruel daughter learns to be kind by working to help attractive Scottish orphans with pretty names (but is Maili a Scottish name? I thought it was a Hawaiian name, though usually spelled Maile. Catriona is a good one, which we know from the star of Outlander). I imagine there might be a future installment of the series to see how the cruel rapist drug addict son fares. One odd trope I have seen often is falling and getting badly hurt as a dramatic
catalyst. Also, in this book, triplets abound, as multiples do in some families.

Being petty, a gossip and letting your insecurities rule your mouth often lead to heartbreak. If you don't hurt others, you hurt yourself. Maybe more than your reputation. Beatrice had long been promised to Lord Vernon. He had never formally proposed and she didn't know why. She had tried everything her mother had recommended from flirting with others to make him jealous to clinging to him around other ladies. Her cousin Elly had returned from America and she was blindly jealous of her. Through snippets of conversation she gathered bits of information and set out to ruin her cousins reputation.
Her father, brother and Lord Vernon come up with a punishment.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. This one was alright. The Scotsman first shows up in this one, and gets jilted by my least favorite character of this whole collection of people, so I really don't see much sense in her head.
Anyway.
I just didn't care much for either of the main characters so I wasn't super invested in it.

This is review is for books 1-3 in the Lorring-Abbott series. I absolutely have fallen in love with this series. I could not put it down which became a problem on my car trip. It was making me car sick reading so much but this was such a great romantic read. I am already starting book 4 and will definitely be looking for more from this author.

Lady Beatrice has gotten herself into trouble. Lord Vernon has canceled their betroth and she is sent away to Scotland in the midst of winter to think about what she has done. Little does she know this is Lord Vernon's property. Beatrice learns to live there and eventually to enjoy it. Lord Vernon shows up and their love for each other is still there. Read the story and see what happens.

Love her books!

This book parallels “The Series of Elements “ books and its fun to read some of the backstory of the same characters. Good to read each series in order.
I liked that this book addressed the issue of redemption. We hated the main character in this book in the parallel book but the author as usual, makes all things right.

Beatrice is spoiled and vindictive, but when her selfish ways hurt her cousin, who is already struggling, she is sent away. Given the opportunity to be away from the negative influence of her mother and to work and grow into the person she would like to be. She's able to find a small measure of joy and peace, despite her regrets.

The continuation of the Loring-Abbott saga did not disappoint.

Bea was a bit of a witch in book 1 and was banished for her behaviour throough the advise of her betrothed Rhys.

It took time for Bea to learn how really spoiled and wrong she was and Rhys was devastated since he really did love her.

I had issues putting down the book once I started.
