Jane True #4

Eye of the Tempest

Rate this book
Nothing says "home" like being attacked by humans with very large guns, as Jane and Anyan discover when they arrive in Rockabill. These are professionals, brought into kill, and they bring Anyan down before either Jane or the barghest can react. Seeing Anyan fall awakens a terrible power within Jane, and she nearly destroys herself taking out their attackers.

Jane wakes, weeks later, to discover that she's not the only thing that's been stirring. Something underneath Rockabill is coming to life: something ancient, something powerful, and something that just might destroy the world.

Jane and her friends must act, striking out on a quest that only Jane can finish. For whatever lurks beneath the Old Sow must be stopped...and Jane's just the halfling for the job.

Take a look at the Jane True series cast:

- a half selkie who constantly engages in conversations with her libido;
- an attractive shapeshifter with a rather canine sense of fashion;
- a powerful gnome who always carries her rocking chair with her;
- a kelpie named Trill who turns into a pony;
- a satyr with a loincloth problem;
- a former porn star turned lesbian heiress socialite;

if you feel the corners of your mouth turning up by now, the Jane True Series might be just the thing for you.

Then, if you think you might want your story peppered with:

- incredibly funny and incredibly bad jokes (obviously complementarily);
- obscure and not so obscure pop culture references;
- an action packed urban fantasy plot populated by all kinds of supernaturals;

then you HAVE to read this series.

This book has been, so far, the very best in the series and I can't wait for the next book to come out - alas, next year.
I'm hacking off half star because of the rather huge plot hole in the middle of the book. Mr. Peeler, how could two of your most experienced characters act in such an amateurish way?
Nonetheless, a great funny UF series which doesn't get enough credit but I hope more people - with the right sense of humor - will read.

Just like the first three books in this series, but for different reasons each time, 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Even though there are numerous references to what's gone on before, this book is about as far from being a stand-alone as I've seen. There's a whole lot here that isn't going to make much sense if you haven't read the previous book, Tempest's Legacy.

As I've done before, I'll refer you to my review of the series debut, Tempest Rising, for an explanation of our first-person narrator Jane True and the Old Sow, the real whirlpool between Maine and New Brunswick that becomes important in the present story: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

And with only one exception all the active characters here are familiar ones from the previous book, so here's that review for a round-up of the characters and their supernatural species: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

That one exception is a remarkable new character in a remarkable location, whom I really enjoyed getting to know & hope you will too. Overall, this is a rewarding series, but it really, really needs to be read from the beginning.

Well, this time we don't have all the pain and suffering of books #2 and #3, which held my ratings down, so why only 3.5 stars again? Disappointment that throughout most of this story two of my favorite characters are incapacitated and out of play: Anyan the barghest who's turning into Jane's true love, and Nell the delightful two-foot gnome in charge of local supernaturals. Those are two caring individuals, and although several others care a lot for Jane, they're in secondary roles here.

And I found many of the key action scenes hard to visualize, but at the same time it was impressive how far beyond the ordinary this adventure takes us. We start in good old Rockabill, Maine (reality check is in that first review link), where we learn (for the first time I think) that something beneath the Old Sow has been drawing supernaturals of all species toward this tiny town. It's pointed out that our sweet narrator Jane True is the only supernatural character in Rockabill who was actually born there (human father, selkie mother, remember).

And then four of the adversaries from the previous book come to Rockabill. Phaedra the malevolent Alfar leads Graeme the sadistic rapist and their two harpy sidekicks, and they're all about unlocking four "locks" consisting of magical glyphs planted by ancient Alfar around the town. Unlocking the last glyph will liberate enough force to destroy most of the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, which is something Phaedra and Graeme really look forward to on their way to world destruction.

Who can stop them with Anyan and Nell out of the picture? Well, check out the cover to this one--there's Jane on the right, cute as ever, and on the left is that blonde chick whose whole body is covered with magical tattoos. We met her in the previous book in scenes that practically shouted she was going to be a major player, and she certainly is one here. She's called an Original because she's from a time before the supernaturals split into so many different species, so she has all the species' powers and abilities wrapped up in one, and Jane never knows whether to trust her or mistrust her.

But now she settles in, becomes well liked in Rockabill (while Jane is in a convenient coma...you just have to read it), and then teams up with Jane and her friends to try to save the day. Her real name is a string of sounds that don't occur in human speech, but she's happy Jane's nickname for her is Blondie because she was a fan of Debbie Harry's rock group in the 80s. She's kind of pansexual, and she gets Jane to be more than a little bi-curious, so there are a few sexy scenes even in Anyan's absence.

And as the story develops beyond all familiar boundaries, we find out that Blondie isn't just an Original...she might even be older than planet Earth! The whole mythology of the Alfar, so carefully constructed in the first three books, is overwritten in this one with a much grander and longer-term worldview that encompasses the evolution of all life forms on earth. Take a deep breath before you accompany Jane and Blondie out to the Old Sow and plunge into its depths!

Odd. So Goodreads totally deleted this book from my shelf.... so I'm just re-adding it and my review.

Alright, it’s official. I love Nicole Peeler. There, I’ve said it. I’m SO glad that I finally got off my ass and read her Jane True series because it is truly a wonderful, hilarious, hell of a good time series.

The Storyline

In the fourth installment of the Jane True series, after an altercation with a group of humans who attacked Jane and Anyan, Jane uses a power against them that no one knew she possessed. She used so much magic that she practically fell into a coma for the better part of a month. When she wakes, things aren’t much better; actually, they’re quite worse. Jane’s friends inform her that Phaedra’s evil group has been searching out the locations of four ‘locks’ that are around Rockabill that when unlocked will unleash and ancient power. It’s up to Jane to locate the locks and get to this ancient power first so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

My Thoughts

I won’t continue to gush about my love for this series, I’m sure everyone is fully aware by now, since this will now be my fourth review of this series and I’m probably starting to sound like a broken record. As far as new thoughts and feelings, I must say I am so glad that Jane and Anyan are still ‘together’. I absolutely adore those two.

I loved seeing Iris go through her healing process after what she suffered in the 3rd book. It made it all the more real that the author didn’t simply glaze over that whole ordeal and transform Iris right back to her normal funky self.

It never ceases to crack me up how Jane’s libido has a life of its own and it’s almost a completely separate entity form Jane.

’Now I can do the slurping! My libido crowed, causing me to blush. I hated when I blushed at my own sex drive.

The Ending

I had this horrible feeling that I was going to be left with some massive cliffhanger about midway through the book. Fortunately, that feeling was short-lived as Nicole managed to wrap it up quite nicely. All I have to say though… poor Jane and Anyan. Lol Can’t they get cut some slack here??? I can’t wait for the fifth installment; this series just keeps getting more and more exciting!

If you have yet to read this series, well… what are you waiting for?!

3.5 stars...

I just wrote a terribly long review, and then GR spazzed and the review was lost....

So, I'm not rewriting. I will say that I don't agree with how Ryu is handled in this book. Jane is USING Ryu more than he ever used her. And then after Jane asks for a favor, she's immediately turning around and calling Ryu selfish. I'm perplexed by Jane's new nympho nature. Okay - first she lusted after Ryu, then Anyan, and in this book she has a make-out session with Blondie? Seriously Jane, get it together. She seems to want to hump anything that looks good to her at the time. Maybe there is a sexual component to her powers that the reader doesn't know, yet.

This is not my favorite Jane True book.

Nicole Peeler has risen to the very top of my list of funny authors. I don't think I've ever laughed so much with a book. Maybe I'll write a full review during the weekend, but I don't see much point to it. Being the fourth book, all anyone needs to know is that it lives up to everything I was hoping for and more.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: A tense race to find out what is stirring beneath Rockabill before the bad guys do. This book is progressively more serious than the rest of the series, but still delivers all the jokes and jabs we expect from Jane and her friends.

Opening Sentence: I awoke slowly, languorously, my still-mostly-sleeping brain registering surprise when my nose smooshed into soft leather rather than sheets.

The Review:

The Jane True series has been a delight to read; the new installment, Eye of the Tempest, is no exception. Jane has been roped into a dangerous and time sensitive mission with the whole world riding on the outcome. Though it sounds a little intense for Jane, believe me when I say that she is up to the challenge with her usual flare.

Jane is not the girl you would choose to save the world. She has only been aware of the supernatural community, her mother’s people, for barely a year. Her control of her magic is still rudimentary and she still relies heavily on those around her for support. So why is it that she is the one in charge of finding the four locks that hold an ancient weapon away for hundreds of years? Maybe because the locations seem to hold significant memories for Jane. Maybe it’s because Anyan and Nell are incapacitated and she is the next best thing. Maybe it’s all based on the word of Blondie, the Original who seems to always be there when Jane needs her the most. Or maybe it is just a pre-ordained destiny that is calling to Jane to fulfill. We know that Jane will do almost anything for those she loves, but can she be counted on to save ALL of man and supernatural kind, both good and bad?

Jane’s love life with Anyan is hard to decipher. Though it seems that they are now trying to be a couple, Jane still has doubts. They even try to have several intimate moments; all of which are interrupted in one way or another. The idea of the two of them together is terrific. I find him so much more Jane’s type than Ryu was. Can Jane get over her reservations about being with Anyan? Can Anyan talk her into it? Will they ever have a chance to knock some boots or will the sexual tension be dragged out through the next book as well?

Blondie’s character is still an enigma for Jane at the beginning of the book. While Jane was in a coma for a month, Blondie made nice with Jane’s friends and earned their trust. Of course, she has yet to earn the trust of Jane, and for good reason. Blondie keeps secrets; a lot of secrets. These secrets, both about her past and her motivations, she slowly reveals to Jane throughout their search. Jane really gets annoyed that she waits to fully reveal everything until the very end. When we do find out the full story, Blondie’s reasons become understandable and acceptable. It gives her character a depth that would be lost if we didn’t discover it bit by bit. On the plus side, Blondie is a tremendous flirt and is constantly propositioning Jane; which is always fun to read.

The weapon they search for is wanted by the bad guys as well. It becomes a race to see if Team Jane or Team Jarl’s Lackeys will get to it first. This book delves into the idea that Jarl and his views are shared by many all over the world, and that Jane’s unnatural fixation on him may be shortsighted on her part. There are hints at a larger war brewing within their community that will have devastating effects on everyone, human and supernatural alike. When even long forgotten ancient entities, like Blondie, feel they are forced to choose sides; you know that this war is far more important than any petty feelings Jane harbors for one bad guy. Can Jane take up the reigns and be a leader for the forces of good? Or will she falter under the pressure and end up costing her side the war? What could possibly motivate someone like Jane to break out of her tiny mold and become the woman she is destined to be: the lives of her friends and family? Food? Sex? It seems in the past that Jane’s stomach and libido make many of the decisions on her behalf: Which is part of the reason she is such a lovable character.

With far more serious issues discussed within the book, Eye of the Tempest still manages to deliver on the funny. It is a perfect blend of hard-hitting action and side-splitting humor that make the series as a whole a great read for anyone.

Notable Scene:

“What does every war need?” Anyan asked, clearly rhetorically. I’d noticed that the barghest, while normally short-winded, did enjoy the occasional rousing speech. Unfortunately, he wasn’t talking to a cabal of military strategists, and we like to mess with him. So before he could finish his own question, we’d jumped in to “help.”

“A punchy code name?” I hazarded.

“Fabulous uniforms!” Iris blurted out.

“Bulletproof jockstraps,” stated Caleb, getting into the spirit of things. Iris had obviously brought out the playful side of the normally serious satyr. No wonder he liked her so.

In the meantime, at his words, the entire group of us sitting in the circle-including the kelpie, with her eye-level pony view-all turned as one to look at the satyr’s package. Undaunted, he reaffirmed his opinion.

“Definitely bulletproof jockstraps.”

“Yeah, um, no,” Anyan said. “What every war needs is an advantage.”

“And an army,” I added, helpfully.

“And food. Don’t armies march on their stomachs?” said Amy Nahual.

“Which means people to cook the food-“ I agreed.

“Shut up!” Barked Anyan.

FTC Advisory: Orbit Books graciously provided me with a copy of Eye of the Tempest. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. The only payments I receive are hugs and kisses from my little boys.

Sexual tension. To the point where it's almost painful! Oh, and some other stuff. It must be said that Jane's libido is one of my favorite characters and when it's being denied she gets grumpy. And snarky! What I wasn't prepared for was the . . . twist.

Basically Jane becomes the chosen one. My book friends know how much this annoys me. Very few authors can pull off “the chosen one” bull crap and it always puts the fear in me. But this is Peeler. To me she can do no wrong and I highly doubt she's going to make Jane some kind of super-none-can-touch-her-ego-cray-cray type lead. As Jane goes on this next chapter of her life. Nope. Peeler handles it well. Jane is a Champion and this book only furthers her status as an amazing lead. The Jane True universe has been 100% unique—awesomeness—that fans have greatly appreciated. With this new mythology of the Alfar being revealed I'm sure fans will be blown away.

All of the amazing cast of characters are here. It amazes me each time how much I love all of Jane's friends, especially Jane's employers! The build up of Anyan and Jane is awesome. Also, frustrating as they keep getting interrupted. It doesn't help that some of Blondie’s origin story gets tossed in, and Jane develops a girl crush on Blondie . . . those scenes are pretty steamy. It was like this whole emotional thing. Anyan and Jane. *Fans self.* Blondie and Jane. *gulp* Mercy! Yet I'm team Anyan all the way and I want to see more of that relationship build. It would be cruel to have the amazing buildup and emotion to only be cut off before it really gets anywhere.

In the end I was shocked by the sudden “Ultimate Champion Jane” twist and the truth behind the Alfar. Thank you Peeler! This series is going to keep knocking my socks off with each new addition and I look forward to it. There is apart of me that felt this book wasn’t at great as the others. However! The whole world of Jane True is one that I've come to love and I count down the days to each new release. Tell the next adventure!

Sexual Content: This book is hawt! Great make out scenes and some naughty ones. Nothing too explicit.

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

Waking from a month long comma, Jane finds her peaceful small town in turmoil. Weird things are happening in Rockabill and when Nell and Anyan get taken out of commission by a nasty spell, it’s up to Jane and her new friend Blondie to get to the bottom of it all (literally). Be prepared for non-stop ass kicking action, lots sexual frustration, and as always snarky and humorous dialogue (internal and external).

This fourth book I felt it was a bit different from the others in the sense that it was more fantasy-like because it had a quest. Oh yes, a full blown Zelda-like gotta-kill-the monsters-at-the-elemental-temples-to-unlock-the-powers-to-save-my-princess kind of quest. In Jane’s quest is more about saving the world (or half of it) and her prince-turned-dog.

In the mean time we get to learn more about Alfar history and how the many supernatural races got made. Blondie’s tattoos are wicked awesome (you’ll see why). A little bit disconcerting was Jane’s attraction to Blondie. Not that I have anything against that, but it just seemed absurd that Jane would be panting after someone she didn’t even trust while her hunk of a man ran around stuck in doggie form. I thought Jane would be more considerate and worried about Anyan.

Sigh. Now for the part I didn’t like. All I can say about Anyan’s fate is Ms. Peeler you are a cruel mistress. How could you deprive us of Anyan for a whole book!? How could you leave things unfinished? It’s not ok! I get that this part of the story is more about Jane and how she needs to decide if she will be a simple warrior or a champion in the upcoming war. But still, an overly frustrated reader doesn’t make for a good combo when doing a series. More so when the frustration has a year to cook, since the next book comes out Summer 2012.

How many will return to read?

*Review*

Jane has been busy since we last read the Tempest's Legacy. A month has since passed and Jane and Anyan have been searching high and low for those responsible for killing Jane's mother Mari. Now that Jari and Morrigan have been exposed for what they truly are--conniving and loathsome beings that were responsible for killing off half-breeds--it’s only a matter of time before things come to a final conclusion.

Yes, Anyan and Jane are together and that asshat Ryu is nowhere around since becoming co-ruler of the Alfar compound. The constant sexual tension and teasing between Jane and Anyan is a bit tedious at times, but fun as well. I think it’s all a test of readers’ devotion and patience with the series that we haven’t ganged up on her and screamed that she needs to stop teasing us with sex between the couple and get it on already!

Jane and her Rockabill crew consisting of Trill (kelpie), Nell (Gnome), Iris (Incubus), and Caleb (Satyr) find that they are under attack by a mysterious force. Humans actually attack Anyan and Jane who for the first time ever, actually removes the threat permanently. Jane ends up unconscious for a month and starts dreaming about a being that could be considered the first on earth. The good thing that comes out of her being unconscious is that her father is told and understands the truth about Mari and Jane and the other supernatural living in Rockabill.

For the record, I'm still happier than a clam at high tide when Peeler adds Grizzie to the storyline. She is way over the top with her comments and the clothes she wears, but is adorable and lovable at the same time. She absolutely loves Jane to death.

Jane and crew later learn that the creature underneath Rockabill that has been pulling supernatural creatures towards the town for years. The only one that was actually born in Rockabill is Jane. They are also given dire warnings by the humans in town of bad things to come if the creature is unleashed.

We learn more about Blondie, the so called Original being who has pulled Jane out of trouble several times now. We learn where she came from as Jane travels that road via touching her tattoos on Blondie’s body. I also wondered for a time if Peeler was going to have a Jane/Blondie moment that turned into something else since Jane started to have a girl crush at one point. There are some really hot and steamy scenes spun throughout the book between Jane and Anyan and Blondie at one point.

We also learn that Jane is the chosen one, or champion that the creature has named in order to stop the evil villains from unleashing hell on earth against the human race. Her fight to the death with Phaedra, Graeme, Kaya, and Kaori, was a long time coming. I was personally tired of having the rapist incubus around trying to mess with Jane all the time.

Peeler also removes the veil from Jane and allows her to be a super hero who takes on all comers and doesn’t need anyone else’s assistance. Yes, she still has reservations as to who she is and what her destiny is. Yes, she still questions her abilities at times of pressure. But, now that she is the Joan of Arc for the rebellion against Jari and Morrigan and others, it will be fun to watch where Peeler takes Jane from here.

Tempest’s Fury (Jane True #5) releases summer of 2012.

Nicole Peeler books are always a treat, and Eye of the Tempest proves no exception to the rule. As per usual, I purchased it the day it came out, read it as fast as possible...which was slow for me this week (too much life going on). However, I will now proceed to whinge until the next book is out. What can I say? Peeler is always good.

In Eye of the Tempest, Jane True has discovered something interesting about her home town of Rockabill Maine. The town is the center of an ancient power that attracts all forms of the Supernatural, which surprises nobody who has been reading the series (but apparently is a huge reveal to Jane). In trying to locate the source of the power Jane and company must discover four keys hidden all over Rockabill...and the first one immediately renders two of the party useless (not dead just but useless...in all means of the word). Jane must persist with a new ally she only half trusts in order to find the power, and the chosen one, before the war begins.

I'm so happy with this series. I have a hard time finding anything wrong with it. The characters are all so much fun to pal around with for 300+ pages and the humour is spot on cheeky. This might have been the first book that I felt was a set up book in the series - a middle book, but I'm not mad at it. Transitional books are fine for what they are if they are done this well. This is definitely the book that sets you up for the next few in the series. It's book 4. That makes sense. It's time for a 4.

Fans of Anyan will not be disappointed in this book and I'm glad that Peeler is moving the two towards each other. Also, she had a line about Jane launching her vagina at him...which, if you recall from my review of Tempest's Legacy, was something really wanted to read.

My wish, for the record.

"In fact if Jane can figure out a way to launch herself vagina-first at Anyan I think that could potentially make my life."
Peeler's line, for the record.

"I didn't want her to think that I was abandoning her - hos before bros and all that - but I did want to ascertain that she'd be well away before I launched my vagoo at Anyan's face."
Page 39 in Eye of the Tempest.
Right. I'm claiming that line. It's mine. Completely, even if it's unintended for me.

4 out of 5 stars. Love these books!

The Jane True series is one of my favorites and I was really looking forward to this book (in spite of the horrendous changes they made to the cover). Though it was a quick read and still pretty good, it was by far my least favorite book in the series and left me with mixed emotions. I love Jane and I really wanted to love this book but I just didn't. It fell flat for me and when I finished I was both sad and a little angry.

Snarky Jane was still there and kicking ass but certain scenes were really drawn out and rather boring. I found myself wanting to skip ahead and that doesn't happen often. Though Jane's inner battle with her libido is always funny at times she was more concerned about her bicurious attraction to Blondie instead of fixing doggie Anyan. Hell her libido seemed more important than even saving herself in the middle of battle; that annoyed me. I found myself wanting to tell her to concentrate before she became dog food. Speaking of dogs, how many times can you mention a dog peeing, smelling it and licking himself before it gets old? It's a dog and it's what they do, please move on.

The thing I found most disappointing about the book was the ending. I'm not talking about the end of the battle because I liked that plus Jane got a really cool labrys out of the deal. What I'm talking about is the buildup between Anyan and Jane; it has been going on too long to just leave the readers hanging like that. It was soooo anticlimactic. Yes I realize this is not a PNR series but come on. At this point I feel almost as tortured as Jane does.

Will I read Tempest's Fury, the next book in the series? Yes. Even with this book being somewhat disappointing, it is still one of the best UF series out there right now. Will I look forward to it as much as I did this book? Probably not.
August 14, 2011
I was so looking forward to this book and it's just a huge tease!! That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it because I did. Jane and Anyan just got home from their last huge fight and get attacked again leaving Jane in a coma for a month. When she finally comes out of it, not only does she have to play catch up but she finds out strange things are happening in the town. This, of course, leaves NO time for her and Anyan. And then "something" happens and there is absolutely NO time for her and Anyan.

Nicole Peeler has so many great lines in her books and this one did not disappoint. There were too many to pick just one or two or three and I was constantly busting up.

A few things that I didn't care for were the constant sexual frustration jokes, Caleb not wearing pants comments (the first couple...funny, after that it got old), her girl crush on Blondie (not that I minded it but what was the point?), and all the Alfar history and history with the creature.

Overall, I really enjoyed it ~ especially Jane and Anyan. I can understand why Nicole Peeler left us frustrated even though I wish she wouldn't and hopefully there will be more Jane and Anyan in the next one.

I love Jane True. It is such a fun series.
The details of each story really add a lot to keeping me reading this series.
Jane's character has progressed and grown with all her experiences.
Jane True is back. We learn a new side of Jane in this book.
I like this new part of Jane. Jane has grown and has to be more independent.
I like when a character can have a new aspect that lets the books grow in a new direction.

I am sooo intrigued by this series! With every new installment, Nicole Peeler manages to reel me in deeper to Jane's world of manic Alfar antics and mind blowing magic! I can't imagine what Jane will get herself into next, but the countdown is on! Summer 2012 cannot come fast enough for me, but here's hoping that the publishers bump up the date!

Book four in Nicole Peeler’s Jane True series was disappointing. I loved the previous books. Each one continually got better. The end of book three, Tempest’s Legacy, was awesome. I craved Eye of the Tempest. It was everything I expected for about a chapter and a half. Then I met a Jane who worked my nerves. I couldn’t stand her. Especially when she said stuff like “You are the lord of my vagina.” It wasn’t funny. It was annoying.

In this book, Jane was overwhelmed with lust. Almost to the point of it being all she thought about. She wanted to make out with the stove, Anyan and ___________. Every thought was about Anyan’s junk, licking junk, dry humping ____, etc.

I’m also pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to be making out with the woman underneath me.

So, yeah, her need to have an orgasm has her making out with a woman. WTF! If she hadn’t been all about Anyan in previous books I might not have had such an issue with it, but it became ridiculous as the story progressed. That leads me to another issue. What’s up the crazy inner dialogue between Jane’s libido and virtue?

VIRTUE: You’re just going to train with Nell, as usual. Don’t get all crazy.
LIBIDO: I’ll give Anyan a training!
VIRTUE: You’ll do no such thing. (A)He is undoubtedly the one who will do the training, both inside and outside of the bedroom. (B) This is the time for magical traiing. Not the naughty kind!
LIBIDO: Mmm. Naughty.
VIRTUE: Focus!
LIBIDO: I’ll give Anyan a focus!
VIRTUE: I hate you.

I read a review which explained it perfectly, so I’m not going to try and restate it.

The author’s treatment of Jane’s libido as a minor character (…my libido thought, etc.) is over the top. I doubt there is a single page where it isn’t referred to at least once. To make matters worse, Jane’s “virtue” has now been personified as well. And the two are commencing to argue with one another. I have never met a person or a character who is such a slave to her libido.–Leigh Porch, GoodReads

And that sexual connection between Anyan and Jane? You know the one we’ve all been waiting for? Well, be prepared to wait some more. As Suz pointed out on GoodReads, “Cock blocking as a plot device runs amok in this book.” Every time the sexual tension builds, something or someone interrupts to the point of ME becoming frustrated. But there is more that bothered me.

There are several info dumps that change everything. The first of which is Jane awakening from a coma to discover her father has been healed. For the past three books we watched Jane worry about her father’s health. Miraculously that is no longer a problem. Jane has also worried about her father learning about the supernatural and her mother’s death. That is all handled off pages, too. Jane’s father tells her what he learned while she was out of it. I could go on, but I’ll leave something for you to discover for yourself when you read the book.

Finally, let me say I’m totally squicked out when I read books about water creatures being wet. Yes sexually. Cause when things heat up, and the hero is all “oooh, I like it when your wet” I think gushing water. Water fountain, hell–waterfall. lol So think that and read this:

“So wet,” he murmured against me. “I love how wet you are.”

Unfortunately, Eye of the Tempest irritated me. I read the entire book, but I didn’t enjoy the trip as I have in the past. There were cameos from major characters (Jane supporters) from past books, but the story focused on Jane and a character from book 3 as they attempted to save humanity. I’m hoping the next book is better, but I won’t run out and buy it.

Another great entry in the Jane True saga. What I like best about this series is the skilled storytelling. Dr. Peeler crafts a really good tale for each book and has a clear plan for the series as well. It's just tremendous fun to sit back and watch Nicole do her thing, she writes these books that are just wonderfully good fun on the surface but that are also really thoughtfully designed and smart. The series has a clear plan, it isn't like some that just sort of bumble along with the heroine jumping into various mysteries each book and quickly losing steam several books into the series. Each book in this series expands Jane's world, both personally and in the overall story arc. It is really satisfying to read each book and see Jane grow up and gain power as a woman of the world, in her relationships with her friends and family, with romantic relationship, and as a power to be reckoned with in the supernatural community. And the way that the supernatural story arc expands during each book makes it really interesting to follow the story as well; what started out in the first book as a local conflict became regional, and is now has worldwide implications. Each step of the unfolding story made sense, added interest and urgency and was totally logical and skilled storytelling. Underneath the banter and laugh-out-lloud humor and really exciting action and very sexy love scenes (and very frustrating interruptions) is a lot of skilled writing.

So, as for this book specifically, it's sort of the first book in the next stage of Jane's story. They wrapped up their hunt to shut down the Alfar labs and in the process there was a major shift in political power in their region that seems to have sparked a revolution that may effect the whole world, or have revealed something that was there all along. And although Jane would love to settle down in Rockabill and shag away with sexy Anyan (who can blame her), she is once again caught up in major events as they happen. Because quiet Rockabill has a lot of secrets, which makes a lot of sense, or else why are all of these hugely powerful magical folk all living there? Too convenient, eh?

The story was very good. The focus was really on Jane taking the next step in deciding what she wants to do and what she's willing to do. She continues to grow in strength both emotionally and magically. I loved the addition of Blondie and the revelations that went with her. I liked the follow-up about Iris, that things weren't just dropped or swept under the rug. I also like the way things are handled with Ryu, very adult and appropriate. And of course I like best the way things were handled with Anyan. But these interruptions are going to make me insane!

My only quibble in the whole thing was how her dad got healed. It felt too easy. If he could get healed that easily, why didn't someone tell her earlier, she could have told him her secret and gotten him heathy long ago. I'd have been awfully mad if someone made my dad suffer for all of that time, with a chance that he could have a heart attack and die at any moment unnecessarily, but she never questioned the timing, was just glad he was healthy. Maybe Nicole realized that she needed him healthy for something in a future book or something, but it felt really sudden and out of place.

But that was such a tiny little thing. Overall it was a very good story full of laughs, excitement and sexy times. Can't ask for more than that.

I have been reborn, I thought as I got my shoulders through the hole, but I got caught on my bottom half. And I shall henceforth be known as Hips-Got-Stuck.

Eye of the Tempest, the fourth book in the Jane True series, is what I am deeming straight up Classic Jane True. It is a lot lighter than the previous Jane book, Tempest’s Legacy. While the stakes are high, they are handled with so much humor the high level tension in the previous books is for the most part absent. I spent a good majority of this book giggling my butt off over Jane’s constant cracks over No-Pants-Wearing-Huge-Schlong Caleb, and basically the narration in its entirety. As always, Jane’s libido is in full effect, constantly battling with her virtue. Here is one of my most favorite Jane narration quotes:

Where will you go? I asked her, trying not to smile when she motioned toward the beach quite a ways up the shore. After all, I didn’t want her to think that I was abandoning her—hos before bros and all that—but I did want to ascertain that she’d be well away before I launched my vagoo at Anyan’s face. pg. 40

Our favorite selkie goes on several journeys that are just one funny after another from page to page. From fondling Anyan’s Wolf Challenger Restaurant Range to having a group Shake Weight session with some ancient crystals, this book is so wrong and right. She gets to spend a lot of time with Grizzie and Tracy, Iris, Trill and Nell, and we get to learn a lot more about the edgy blondie, called … Blondie …. because her name is so ridiculous to pronounce. Many times throughout the book I was reminded of a raunchy Scooby Doo gang with the ongoing banter. Did I mention that Caleb has a huge dong and never wears pants? Yeah. Jokes galore. And Ryu is mostly out of the picture in this one which really made me happy because he needed to get gone. I like it when he only is on the phone a couple of times, I think he makes a vocal appearance twice and I may have rolled my eyes both times. Oh and I have to include the next quote because it’s up there with Sea Code, bitch! for me:

And then I finally experienced the stuff about which songs are written: Blondie Supermanned this ho. pg 198

While this Jane True novel changes gears and shows its fluffy side, it is also a setup for some very big events that are coming. But what about Anyan, you ask? I am extremely irritated by what DR. PEELER decided to do with Anyan!! — buuut in a good irritated way, not bad, I promise… she is just a really huge tease. TEASE! I’ll put it this way without spoiling anything: the journey that Jane has to travel is really about figuring things out on her own, facing her greatest fears without her safety nets. With that being said, I am quite pleased with the direction things are going overall. Another great dose of writing that is addictive and engaging, you won’t want to stop once you start. The Jane True Series:

Tracking the Tempest
Tempest’s Legacy
Eye of the Tempest
Tempest’s Fury (Summer 2012)

I could not put down EYE OF THE TEMPEST. There is non stop action, fantastic kick butt characters, tons of sexual frustration, laugh out loud commentary and some great surprises thrown in to make what I feel is the best Jane True novel yet. Jane has really grown into the supernatural world and herself. She gets some more answers and finds a new ally in her fight to protect. Her and Anyan are attempting to start up a relationship that has been forming for a while, and I'm super excited about it. I have always liked Anyan and hope book 5 has a lot of him in it. I wasn't sure how I felt about Blondie at the beginning but she really brings something new and fresh to the series. She turns out to be extremely loyal and I think Jane has a friend that will stand by her side through anything in her. The war is officially on and I will be there every step of the way. Cant wait for TEMPEST'S FURY in 2012.

Start of the book was not so great, but then book take same fast action, comedic and intresting phase where I have grown used in Nicole Peelers previous books.

Jane True is not typical paranormal heroine, but she is really independent woman who can make her own decisions and these independent thoughs are not typical I disagree with male lead and then realises during book that male lead was right. Nicole Peeler makes much more intresting plot twist as she make male lead to be cursed as dog most of the book and Jane gets new adventure companion, ancient fay who has unutterable name (least Jane can't say it), so Jane call her as Blondie, which Jane's libido, who has personality it's own, founds this ancient female fay very actrative, even that Jane didn't have any bicurious tendendies previous books, but reason for this attractions could also be Jane long dry spell. And same time as Jane's virtue and libido fare their conversations about which how Jane should sleep with, Jane's old enemies come back to haunt her and this time their plans threaten whole world, at least west coast of the North America, which is for Jane same thing. And to stop villians plans Jane much help Blondie to become champion of the most ancient creature of the world who a traped under continent of the North America, but this plan is not as straight forward as it seems.

I love how realistic character Jane is and her supporting cast is also very good. And best thing in this books is Nicole Peelers light and funny narration, but still her world has very dark side on it, which contrast it's lightness very well.

Eye of the Tempest by Nicole Peeler stars Jane True, a half silkie. Jane has a destiny that even she is unsure she is ready for. Jane and and her friends are being led to fight a war. A war bigger then even Jane herself can imagine. When a powerful and ancient being, with the power to destroy half of the eastern sea board (and possibly the world), awakes Jane must use her gut and heart to decide what is the right path. Her friends and family are in danger and she must be the one to protect them.

I LOVE this whole series and so far, Eye of the Tempest is at the top of the list! Jane True is a character that you love to love. She is good through and through and always puts those she loves first. Everyone should strive to be a little more like Jane! Accept maybe her ability to get cock-blocked at every turn! =) Seriously! She needs some kind of DND for the supes! Jane and Anyan’s relationship has progressed….well except the cock-block issue previously mentioned! The characters are well written, well formed, and I love them all! Ms. Peeler has probably one of the biggest spectrum’s of personalities in one series that I have ever read! There are bullys, pot heads, flaming lesbians, hot steamy men, and Jane’s libido has its own voice…….need I say more! Bottom line is (in case its not obvious at this time) LOVED IT and cannot wait until Tempest’s Fury is out in July….damn that sounds too far away!!!!

Apparently I forgot to mark this read in Goodreads but had put it in my database as done and reviewed. Huh. This is what I wrote (I keep my reviews in calibre, too):

Definitely not the best effort in the series and the end could be called a cliff hanger, although I won't quibble too much with it given that most of the events of the book found a resolution. Cock blocking as a plot device runs amok in this book, however. It runs too long to be cute in the beginning, but ends on a massive cock block and consummation never happens. Underhanded, Ms. Peeler. Not nice at all.

She also uses this book as a set up for a longer arc, which is ok but I really would hate to see too many of them end the way this one did. If it becomes a trend I will likely stop reading them until the series is finished, then pick them back up and read them back to back.

The first three felt to me like the author was having fun. This one felt like she was marketing the next two. Decent enough story, but disappointing handling of it.

This is the longest time i ever take to read a book. It was frustrating that I was actually skimming through it but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.

This series is pretty nice but as years goes on.. the talk about Jane's libido has taken a toll on me and her constant conversation with her virtues and libido really puts me off.

There are some missing chapters for my book and I was pretty much skimming through it.
Almost every page, Jane will talk about her libido and it gets really tiring for me.
Even when facing danger or crisis, her libido will still talk to her.
She is the horniest woman I ever read about.

Sad to say, this book has so much potential but it is not working for me anymore.
Hopefully the next book will be better and not much talk about her libido at every single page.

I might read the next series from library but i will not collect the dead tree version book anymore.

Just my 2 cents worth.
I am sure others will still love this series. :)

After the tumultuous and dramatic events of Tempest's Legacy, Jane True is happy to be home in sleepy Rockabill and looking forward to some downtime, although she's not looking forward to explaining to her father that her mother is never coming back due to having been killed by the faction of supernatural beings that Jane and her friends have been fighting. And she's looking forward to her new developing relationship with Anyan the Barghest and his absolutely fabulous Wolf Challenger Restaurant Range. Unfortunately, Jane's life never goes as planned. On their way to see Jane's father, they're attacked by a human team of assassins in full SWAT gear. Anyan is gunned down and Jane nearly kills herself protecting him and herself. And that's just the first two chapters of Eye Of The Tempest.

Jane wakes up a month later to find that the mysterious blond woman with the tattoos from the end of Tempest's Legacy has made herself at home and ingratiated herself with Jane's friends and family, that her father now knows everything and doesn't seem at all phased by the fact that Jane's doctor is a goblin. Of course, it helps that the goblin fixed her father's heart problems. Unfortunately, one of the reasons for bringing Jane's mortal father into the loop is that the war between the factions is heating up and a major battle is brewing in Rockabill of all places.

Some sort of mysterious force is possessing random Rockabill residents and causing them to utter cryptic warnings. It turns out some sort of legendary source of power is hidden somewhere in the Rockabill area and that there are four locks that need to be opened. Jane and her friends and Jarl and his faction are soon in a race to open the locks and find the clues that will let them have access to a very old power source possibly dating back to the time of the origins of the supernatural races.

As with the three previous books in the series, Peeler does a good job of balancing the serious and humorous scenes without the tone shift seeming at all jarring. So we get the running gag of Jane never being able to consummate her relationship with Anyan because of interruptions mixed with their first attempt to open a lock going disastrously wrong, resulting in Nell the Gnome being turned into a baby gnome with no power leaving Rockabill unprotected. Basically, Peeler has blended a funny sexy paranormal romance with a traditional fantasy quest novel in Eye Of The Tempest. All the elements are there, although the romance is mostly unconsummated due to Anyan being turned into a puppy at the same time Nell was turned into a baby gnome. The quest is a race against time and Jarl's faction, with his minion Phaedra repeatedly showing up to threaten Jane's life.

Eye Of The Tempest wraps up a number of ongoing threads in the series while setting up the next phase of Jane's life as she comes into her full powers and accepts her role in the supernatural realm. Jane's father now knows everything, so she does not have to lie to him and her friends do not have to glamour themselves around him, and the restoration of his health means that Jane is not tied to Rockabill by family obligations, although Rockabill will always be home, given that there is a seat of power in the Old Sow. Jane is also much more confident about what she wants from life and love and more accepting of her role as a major player in the supernatural arena.

While it is possible to read Eye Of The Tempest without having read the four previous books in the series, it really makes more sense for people to start at the beginning of the series with Tempest Rising, as each book builds on the next and the current book makes much more sense if you know everything that's happened involving intrigue amongst the Alfar and the major betrayal at the end of Tempest's Legacy.

Fourth in the Jane True urban fantasy series about Jane, her friends, and their stumbling adventures in fighting the bad guys in Rockabill, Maine.

My Take
This is a bridge novel setting us up for the adventures in Tempest's Fury .

Hide the milkbones. Jane is in almost constant conflict between her libido and her virtue. And it's just too funny to read. Considering what a sheltered life she's led, there's something to be said for the value of reading...ahem…

Omigod, Jane's sensual exploration of Anyan's Wolf Challenger Restaurant Range will stop you in your tracks!

Lots of back history on Blondie, her secrets, and her origin. Creature's life pre- and post-prison. And then there's Jane.
Ohh, her dad is so sweet! If only more people could be so accepting.
"Now I just have more accurate words to describe why you're so special."We should all be as lucky as Jane! Woof… In her family and her ability to EAT. Her real-ness is so refreshing. From her yelps of "gottapeegottapeegottapeegottapee" to the arguments her libido and virtue have---I love it when libido takes a bow!

Anyan and Jane just can't catch a long enough moment to themselves with their friends popping in on them!

Then there's "'Gagagaga…', my libido supplied, helpfully."

It's cute how Peeler brings in references to the real world—Charmed, pokes at seal clubbing, mohawks, Popeye, Tupperware as imagery is just so very Jane.

Peeler, please take note of the difference between "site" and "sight"—"He was just setting his eye to the site sight when he jerked hard."

The Story
Back from the battles in Chicago and still no rest for the wicked as Jane and Anyan are soon attacked at home. It's a short setback and everyone else has time to gather intel. Now, if they'd just spill it all at once when Jane wakes up...

The primary news is that Jarl's operations around Rockabill are only a small part in the total chaos. War is coming and Jane is at the heart of it!

The Characters
Jane True is half-human, half-Selkie and is facing a terrible task. Her mother is never coming back and she'll have to tell her dad the truth about everything. She's a big-eyed little thing whom half the town loves and the other half talks about. But our Jane is coming into her own. Calvin True is Jane's dad and has his heart healed by Dr. Sam while he's also caring for Jane. Anyan glamors the doctor and the town into thinking he's always been healthy. Tracy and Grizzie are a couple—Tracy's pregnant! With twins!! They own Read It and Weep, the bookstore where Jane and her dad are employed.

Anyan Barghest is also a shifter, a barghest or big dog (and does Peeler ever take advantage of this for a laugh or ten!). Seems he's been watching over Jane her entire life and has recently realized he loves her.

Ryu and Nyx have been voted in as the Alfar leaders with the death of the king. Blondie is an Original, one of the first humans the creature changed, as well as a wet blanket on Jane's sex life.

Trill is a kelpie and drills Jane on water fighting. Nell Gnome, a.k.a., dad's Nurse Ratched, is very powerful and her territory encompasses Rockabill. She's been Jane's primary teacher. Amy Nahual waitresses at the Sty owned by Marcus and Sarah Vernon, two more nahuals. Iris is a succubus and another of Jane's friends. Her recent ordeal has left her a bit shaky and Caleb, the satyr, is quite happy to help her get past the trauma of her kidnapping and torture. Gus is a stone spirit, bent on protecting his boulder. Miss Carol is Nell's niece and may be forced to take over Nell's territory.

Stuart Gray and his parents, Sheila and Herbert, hate Jane. Which I really don't understand.

Graeme is a vicious, sadistic incubus rapist who firmly believes in Alfar all the time. He's part of Phaedra's crew (damn, I thought she'd died!) as is Fugwat, a slow-thinking spriggan, and Kaya and Kaori who are harpy sisters.

King Melichor and Queen Tatiana with their seconds, Glynda and Straif, created the Creature's prison, believing it was a weapon and yet wanting access to it if needed.

The Cover and Title
I'm bummed. I've been enjoying the intricate covers of the previous three stories. They were like Jane—funny, complicated, and with a wealth of background. This one retains the cartoon aspect with the punkish, tattooed Blondie in her white wifebeater, tight jeans, and an amazingly jeweled belt. flinging purple magic balls while the tightly fitted Jane in her red and black is turned away from us, twisting back in surprise. I'm assuming the opening they are standing in front of with all the bats flying is a metaphor for the spelunking they'll be doing. The remaining third of the cover is split into a large red slice at the top with the title, tagline, and logo while the remaining red slice is at the bottom showcasing the author's name.

The title could apply to several possibilities: Jane herself, the creature Jane encounters (nope, you'll have to read for yourself to see what I mean!), or Rockabill itself. Any of these, or all of them, could be the Eye of the Tempest.

Oh to spend time with Jane once again. I do enjoy her humor. She's always got a quick come back for everything.

I'm glad Jane has started to come into her own. She's standing up for herself and learning more about her powers and using them. She needs to learn to have faith in herself, and a sleeping entity maybe the one to help her find that faith. With a little help from another who will guide her along the path.

I so so SO want her and Anyan to have that private time together. They've been working and working and deserve a few minutes... But, evil never waits for the good guys to have a little fun. The sexual tension is... tough, but it's so well done! I'm rooting for them the whole time!

I love the humor in the serious moments and so enjoy reading these books. I'm looking forward to finishing the series.

The good guys are interesting, engaging, and likable, the bad guys have a sweeping, genocidal agenda, and Jane doesn't get laid--pretty much par for the course right now in the series and a-okay with me. Plenty of hotness to go around and a lot of sweet character development. I'm a sucker for the accidental heroine plot, and this series delivers.

If you take out Jane’s lustful thoughts, distracting observations, and sexual frustrations this story could have been tighter as novella. There was a core of substance in the plot but it was buried under Jane’s hormones, which flared up at inappropriate moments.
