He loves her blood, but does her love her?!

Reads R to L (Japanese Style), for audiences T+
Misao and Kyo finally go all the way, and Misao can’t regret the new levels of intimacy, even though all the other demons seem to be able to tell that they are now lovers. But does Kyo feel the same way? Instead of bringing them closer, their new status seems to make him turn away from Misao. Is that just the nature of guys, be they human or demon? Or is there something darker behind Kyo’s sudden lack of warmth?

4.25 stars dropped upon reread

Listen, this volume is literally three chapters of the current plot and two chapters of flashbacks of the triplets. I'm not complaining necessarily, but it was jarring to have so much of the volume not focus on the storyline, but flashbacks. I do love the triplets and didn't mind reading two chapters about them in the aftermath of Sho's torture, but it made the volume feel weak.

Black Bird volume 9 by Kanoko Sakurakouji

Dear Kyo,
Why were you a jerk for most this volume? I shall forgive you, but don’t give Misao the cold shoulder after you two have finally done the dead. I hate guys like that, don’t be like that. Since you are insanely awesome and bring out the fangirl in me, I’ll let you slide.
Sincerely,
Me

They finally did it and now they are considered marry by demon law or something like that. Why is everyone always trying to break them up and eat Misao, they can never catch a break. Kyo’s dad showed up in the last chapter of this volume and I was like, “Oh snap, he knows who the traitor is. Maybe he is the traitor.” So much suspense, I’m not going to start volume 10 until later today. I’ll live with the torture of suspense. I don’t know what I’ll do without volume 11, which my bookstore decided not to get when I was there. That’s all for now, I’m trying not to spoil anything.

On top of a lack of foreshadowing--as mentioned in my review of v. 8--serials also sometimes suffer from retconning. Misao and Kyo have consummated their relationship, but whatever spiritual energy was supposed to have been depleted by the sex act is still in full force, so Misao is in just as much danger as she was in v. 1. I guess she is some kind of magical battery. Lucky Kyo? The tome that was supposed to fully explain how the whole Maiden thing worked has been set aside for the time being, but I assume that that will be sorted out eventually.

I'm not too happy with the emotional back-and-forth of a couple of the stories in these last three volumes. Kyo convinces Misao that he will sleep with a woman of the dragon clan (v. 7), and in this volume he says that they should break it off and she should fully return to the human world. The way these situations is resolved is for him to say: "Just kidding, love ya, babe!" Emotionally manipulating your sweetheart ain't cool, kids.

He emotionally manipulates Jiro in the bonus story, too. Asshole.

I liked Misao's pondering on how gentleness is strength in the middle of the volume, and how she wants to be able to protect herself rather than being saved by Kyo all the time. These internal monologues are one of my favorite things about Black Bird.

Misao and Kyo finally did "it"! Misao thought that once they did it they would grow closer together and more intimate but all their physical intimacy didn't change the gap that was growing between them.

And Yoh, Kyo and Sho's father showed up bringing more secrets and surprises to Misao's life with her demon prince.

Whooo boy this volume was ANGSTY! There was a lot of fall out from Kyo and Misao finally hooking up. Their feelings were a mess as well as threats from the other Demon clans which have decided to use Misao against Kyo after finding out he is in love with her. I will say Sensei's art just keeps getting better and better and some of the panels in this volume were downright gorgeous. I was disappointed with Misao returning to being more of a victim but I hope she can recover herself.

The manga seems to be reaching increasing confusion in this tome. Misao and Kyo have done the thing they were warned not to in order to save Kyou's life from a powerful curse.

Now that he has healed and the blood thirsty low tiered demons gone, Misao notices Kyou now acts... distant. News of the consummation of the "marriage" has arrived to rival clans, and now some Tengu want to demand Kyou to feed them with Misao's blood like she were a commodity when their lives aren't in danger (unlike Ayame who Misao healed because she sincerely wanted to save her).

Someone is starting to manipulate humans to attack Misao and have ended up arrested unjustly. Misao feels terrible and wonders if Kyou's sudden coldness and the victim blaming sent by Raiko are getting into her head.

I think the plot had many possibilities, and it sort of missed the mark here. Raiko is a completely detestable character, but he's actually one of the things that tries to keep the story interesting at this point. I believe the part where Tengu demons are trying to threaten Kyou now that he has officially "won" Misao fair & square seems like a dumb plot point. He's supposed to have absolute power over his clan and has the right to order his 7 bodyguards to kick everyone's butt. In prior volumes, he would have done just that. But now, he's all whatever to everyone and walks around the house. I hope there is a deeper meaning towards his changed attitude and it's not just bad writing.

The artwork continues to be great, but there is a certain scene between Kyou and Misao late in the tome that fully turned me off. It was both pointless and somewhat offensive. I hope the next volume tries to pick things up a bit, or at least explains if there is a reason behind Kyo's behavior or this is just a really dumb plot hole.

This volume was good.

3 Stars!

I read Blackbird Vol 9 for a couple of readathons. They were:

Reading Rivalry - A book by an author that's published 10 books...Kanoko Sakurakoji has published at least 18 books!

Winter Magical Readathon - Read a book that's a part of a readathon - I read Blackbird Vol 9 for Reading Rivalry, which is a reading challenge so I think it counts!

Popsugar 2020 Reading Challenge - A book with the same title as a movie or TV show but is unrelated to it - I've found a couple of movies called Blackbird and none of them are related to this!

I don’t think I loved it as much as the last volume but it carried the story on well. There just wasn’t as much to it, I guess. “There’s no way I’m going to let my loving wife become prey,” is one of my favourite lines because it shows just how much Kyo loves Misao and wants to protect her!

There’s threat in this volume in the form of serial threats around the city where Misao lives. The only way to stop them is her giving up Kyo...will she? You’ll have to read to find out! Raiko appears a little in this volume. “Misao...come back to the side of humanity. If you don’t hurry, someone’s going to end up dead. There’s still time.” This is him trying to get Misao on his side.

“How far will he go to protect me?” Is the last sentiment of the main story in volume 9. All Kyo cares about is keeping Misao safe! Kyo’s father turns up after that...

It was slightly disappointing, but some interesting twists with the returning dad and new clan rumblings. The Little Black Bird stories were cute and honestly the highlight of the book.

This story follows Misao, a high schooler who can see the magical creatures and spirits that are invisible to everyone else. This gift is merely an annoyance until her sixteenth birthday, when she gets attacked by a demon and discovers that she is the Senka Maiden, or bride of prophecy – a human whose blood gives unlimited power to the demon who claims her. Her childhood friend Kyo appears in time to save her, though it turns out he is a demon as well! Kyo is the leader of the Tengu (crow demon) clan, thus the name of the story. His intentions to protect her, however, seem to be pure – and Misao allows him to lick her wounds long enough to fall in love with him herself. Together they must face the challenges that come from courting the Senka Maiden, as well as the curse that befalls her once she bears the child of a demon.

This was a fantastic story! The characters were well done with bold personality traits: we can clearly see Kyo’s determination, his brother Soh’s treachery and underhandedness, the Daitengu’s loyalty, even Misao’s simultaneous naivety and bravery. And I absolutely loved the plot. Unlike Demon Spell (another manga featuring demons of Japanese culture), the story was very complete, with no detail left unexplained or unaccounted for.

*SPOILER ALERT* But my favorite part of all has to be the ending. Misao’s pregnancy is meant to lead to her death, but just when all seems to be lost, hope appears. Even if their ending isn’t perfect, it is happy, and you find yourself happy and grateful for the imperfection because it shows you how much worse things could have been.

Soooooo this volume was so bad and boring I don’t even wanna talk about it. More wishy washy bullshit— “pick a side!! human or demon!!” “really??? I can just go back to the human world and live like a normal high school girl even though we just went over why I can’t do that in the last volume and literally every volume of this manga??” “yes……*waits for you to walk away and grabs you* JK BABE OFC NOT!!! ILY MY CHILDBRIDE 💗”

But anyways the two Little Black Bird mini story chapters at the end with the triplets was literally the only reason this got 2 stars. If the whole volume was filled with *that* storyline, then we’d have an actual 3-4 star rating on our hands because that was actually cute, interesting, entertaining, moving, and involved more of the cast in an interesting way that gives us more context to this story. I came for trashy supernatural romance but holy fwuck I am getting bored of Misao and Kyo’s bullshit. Tighten it up, Sakurakoji.

Oh boy, I got a bit depressed again with Misao's situation >< it was understandable (I put myself in her shoes of how it would feel as people were getting hurt because of ones existence) but that brought me down to a dark space, because I think I would feel the same way, and possible do as she did (sadness ;( )

My only complaint would be when Kyo fake threatened to rape her- Misao already is emotional (cries a lot XD) and can't seem to stick up for herself - but even in the situation they were in, I thought "WOW- TOOO MUCH" Rape has been mentioned a couple of times in the volumes, and I just don't want people (mostly myself) to become desensitized to it, as it's a real and scaring that happens, literally everyday in the world.

I hope the concept won't be used as much in the future...

This was a bit serious review, huh? XD

Still, I'll keep reading, as I do enjoy the graphics and the main plot ;)

Jumping right back in where volume 8 left off, we get the morning after, with all the awkwardness you'd expect. The tengu clan immediately starts requesting her blood, as they believe they're entitled to because the clan "owns" her now. Kyo shuts it down hard and fast, as he should. The rival clans know that Misao is Kyo's weakness and start having minor demons possess humans and creating havok, which in turn also messes with Misao mentally. Kyo's dad makes an appearance toward the end of the volume which should be interesting continuing forward.
Overall I wanted to give this volume a 3 but the extra story about Taro and Jiro after their attack from Sho brought that 4th star. I really wish Misao would stop crying so damn much! It's really ruining a number of panels/moments for me.

Weird things in this volume of black bird:
Apparently sex didn’t fix the issue of being attacked by demons like they thought
Every demon has a FMC lost her virginity radar and they’re sending the MMC PRESENTS???
‘Isn’t it our right as the clan that claimed her to have her for nourishment’ 🤮
Post-nut clarity is weird to have here but okay
Forgot this doesn’t take place in the US and thought there was about to be a school shooter incident 😵‍💫
The MCs have completely swapped horny levels and it’s kinda giving ‘Stop pressuring me Katie. I’m just not ready’ from Monsters vs Aliens
MMC’s dead beat dad is rolling up to reveal there’s a spy
FMC is having regrets about sex because people are being injured

The main body of this volume is disappointingly short - We deal with the aftermath of Misao and Kyo becoming lovers - as well as the usual teen human angst of their uncertain feelings, we have the paranormal element - the foreboding of doom in the future as well as more immediate concerns such as fanatic Raikoh's reaction and Misao still being a demon magnet, now for the Tengu clan as well as other clans.

The highlight of this though is the bonus story expanding on the background of Kyo and the triplets Taro, Saburo and Jiro - We see how Jiro learns not to be jealous of his brother Taro. The artwork here is just adorable.

The overall theme seems to be consent. Consent to being a bride, give blood, etc. Misao visits their main home and other demons see how powerful Kyo is after sleeping with her. Remember when it was a concern that he shouldn’t do that? I don’t. The book still points out how good of a person he is for not trying to rape or kill her like “other demons”. Sho returns as a minor problem again to kinda seed doubt with a mole but he has disappeared. It’s very wishy-washy on true drama as Raikoh returns and does nothing. They have sex and bla bla. Its also heavily implied that Sho has raped women in the village and that coincidentally three powerful triplets were born and aid Kyo.

This one was quite hard to read. I've already been annoyed by the part of Misao's character that cries so often, but this volume put that into overdrive. I do understand the reasoning and her guilt moved me a little in these chapters, but it just didn't show enough. I can't seem to get really into this series because it's just so shallow. All of the characters emotions and reasoning are soooooo shallow. And when it seems that we might see into the human/demon dynamic of Misao's character, the author seems to give up. Maybe we'll see more in the next volume🤷🏽‍♀️

This might be my favorite volume yet. Now that Misao and Kyou have "consummated their love" (they're not married yet lol), every youkai knows that the Senka is Kyou's.

And the tengus are like "cool, so let's use her blood already!" but kyou's like "nope, she's mine and i won't ler her be used like food"

so... lots of humbug, i guess???

Plus, the side story features the triplets and it's really cute.

I’m so happy Kyo and Misao finally go all the way! It seems like it has been an eternity, but it really hasn’t. With Kyo now healed he can fight off the enemies of Misao and the demon hunter.

What we now know is the demon hunter may actually have feelings for Misao. He also plays very dirty. (Naughty demon hunter!)

What tore me up the most was Kyo pushing Misao away after their intimacy they shared. Something is going on and it is hurting her so much, but Kyo will not share it with her.

Cheers.

Kyo and Misao finally get together, but of course, there is trouble in paradise and the other Clans want Miaso's blood for the clan as it has healing properties. Kyo gives shits about what others want and now the demons' clans are controlling the humans to either hurt themselves or others. Misao is troubled that someone is using humans to get her to pick sides, but she loves Kyo. I wonder who is giving information to the others clans. I going to put the next volume on hold.

I would feel like Miaso, too, if someone I thought was getting closer to me suddenly turned distant. I like that they did eventually start talking about Kyo's fears and such. And man, that ending? TENSE.

The short story with Jiro and Taro was also nice to see, since we don't really know the twins outside of Taro.
