Robert Lawrence Stine known as R. L. Stine and Jovial Bob Stine, is an American novelist and writer, well known for targeting younger audiences. Stine, who is often called the Stephen King of children's literature, is the author of dozens of popular horror fiction novellas, including the books in the Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room and Fear Street series.
R. L. Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old, and today he has achieved the position of the bestselling children's author in history. In the early 1990s, Stine was catapulted to fame when he wrote the unprecedented, bestselling Goosebumps® series, which sold more than 250 million copies and became a worldwide multimedia phenomenon. His other major series, Fear Street, has over 80 million copies sold.
Stine has received numerous awards of recognition, including several Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Awards, and he has been selected by kids as one of their favorite authors in the NEA's Read Across America program. He lives in New York, NY.
As the story opens, Bernie Bridges ( the protagonist ) was introduced. Bernie is a student at Rotten School. He plays football as a quarterback in the team. He does not like to lose a match and thinks he is the best. Bernie has two friends, Feenman and Crench.
From the first pages the humor of the author ( R.L. Stine ) was pretty good for several reasons. First, Stine can bring something funny from nowhere. For example, this following part of the book, " The quarterback should be brilliant, quick, and good looking right? So they had no choice. It had to be me" - Bernie Bridges. Stine also comes up with funny names for settings. For example, he named the football field R.U. Dumm ( are you dumb ). In conclusion, R.L. Stine is a very funny author.
In continuation of my reading, Bernie and his team tries to get a plan for the team to win. Bernie meets with his friends and tries to change the tactic on the field. Bernie is showing determination at that part of the book. Suddenly, he finds a new tactic, the tactic is called Throw Up Number 6. The plan is to throw the ball to Feenman (which is the number 6 of the team), then Beast blocks every one from coming back to defense, next passes to Bernie who runs to score. This is the result of determination ( the good thing after the working ). This is the plan of Bernie and his friends for the next matches.
The book was given 3 stars for several reasons. First, There is no antagonist. As a result, there is no conflict. Second, there is still no surprise. For example, Bernie and his team still didn't win a match. These are the reasons why 3 stars has been given to the book.
In continuation of the reading, the plan does not work for the first match with it for several reasons. First, the team was too tall and big. Obviously Bernie and his team wouldn't stand the players even with Beast ( the biggest of the team ). Second, Bernie and his team did not have enough pass accuracy and speed. Without that, the team will have more and more difficulties. these are the reasons why the plan did not work.
The author shows more silly stuff in the book for several reasons. First, he wants the reader to have fun when he reads the book. For example, when there is something funny in the book , as a result, the reader laughs and enjoys reading it. Second, authors wants the reader to be enthusiastic for reading the book until the very end. For example, in the fifth grade, the class was reading Joey Pigza, and when Mr. Blakely stopped reading, the class was sad because the whole class was exited of what silly thing will happen next. These are the reasons why the author shows more silly stuff.
The days pass and Bernie's football team is still losing all their matches despite the following plans. Bernie got the team some cheerleaders in spite of gaining confidence. The plan failed a lot of times but they are not giving up because Bernie is in love with the leader who is called April-May June. The team tries to have ball possession as much as possible to make the other team suffer. Bernie and his team could not do more than one pass. These are the plans of the football team.
The characters are weird for several reasons. First, they act like if they are born to be losers. For example, they were so happy because they lost 55 to 3. Second, it is not understandable that people who cannot pass a ball are chosen in the team. As written in the first paragraph, the players cannot complete one pass to keep ball possession. These are the reasons why the characters are weird.
In continuation of my reading, a new plan has been introduced. The plan was a weird plan because Bernie is bringing someone he despise. This someone is Jennifer Ecch; Jennifer Ecch is someone who loves Bernie but who is very fat and big. Bernie thinks she can mess the other team up by running straight. After the first game Jennifer played The team has won their first game ever. This was the successful plan.
The book deserves 4 stars for several reasons. First, the team has finally won its first game. Jennifer messed up the other team for them to succeed. Second, the change of idea every time they lose is a great example of determination. For example, Billy trained his dogs to be good hunting dogs in Where The Red Fern Grows. These are the reasons why the book deserves 4 stars.
Some things I like about Lose, Team, Lose! by R. L. Stine is that they made the main character a underdog. For example, he is short and his team sucks and the cheerleaders didn't even cheer for their team because they were so bad. Another thing that I like is that they made the main character a quarterback so he has self confidence. For example, he talks to April May and keeps trying to ask her out and doesn't feel sorry for himself. On the other hand, somethings I don't like is that they didn't make April May a stereotype cheerleader. For example, she felt happy that Jennifer had a crush on Bernie I would have personally liked it better if she didn't care. I would recommend this book to 4th graders and higher and people who like horror.

Lose Team Lose Bernie has been made the QB of the Fighting Apples. As the book opens, their playing the Hammerhead Sharks from Lindsay Lohan Day School and losing 37-3. They haven’t won a game yet. Maybe one of the reasons is because Feeman and Crench have their helmets on backwards. Bernie calls the next play. A dog appears on the field and Beast takes off after it. Bernie gets tackled. The ball goes down his throat. Coach Bunz has to get tongs to remove the ball. They lose 55-3.
To pour salt into the wound, Sherman brags about how the soccer team won and he scored the winning goal. He’s recorded it on his portal DVD player and replays it (and April hugging him) over and over. Bernie thinks he has to think of a way to make the Fighting Apples winners. Bernie sees April-May outside and tries to get her to go with him to the Sports Award Banquet but she says no for the same reason the cheerleaders only cheer at the soccer games. She (and they) can’t be seen with losers. Bernie asks if they win will she cheer if they win the game next week, but she says yeah right.
Bernie is knocked down by Jennifer who says she’s knitting him a sweater and needs him to go with her to get his measurements. He then has an idea and tells her to tackle him again and then again. Then she gets him to tackle Belzer. He congratulations Belzer for being the teams new tackling dummy and tells Jennier she’s going to help turn the Fighting Apples into killers.
The next game is against the Ben Franklin Prep School Cannibals. Bernie brings out his secret weapon and they win the game by 21 points. The first game they’ve won EVER since the school started. Jennifer says she’s going to knit 10 sweaters for Bernie. Bernie says if she helps them win the State Championship, he’ll help her pick out the yarn. Next, they play the Mercy Academy Mad Dogs. They win 45-O.
Sherman is bragging to Bernie how they won the soccer game and showing him clips when April-May comes by and tells him she has good news. She’s impressed that he let a girl on the team and she says the cheerleaders will now cheer at their games. He demonstrates a cheer for her about him. She gives him one back about Eech. She says tho that if they when the State Championship she’ll have lunch with him if he eats quick. Sherman tries to bribe April May with a hundred-dollar bill. Bernie takes it and buys everyone marshmallow banana ripple ice cream later.
At practice, Sherman sends a bunch of girls over. Bernie is about to tell them they have to leave but he sees April-May and instead tells them their uniforms aren’t ready. Unlike Jennifer, the girls really aren’t that good and Jennifer is now distracted about the sweater. The next game they play the Maniacs. By using distracting tactics, the Fighting Apples when the game 14-0.
Sherman burst Bernie’s bubble by showing them a DVD of the players they’ll have to play if they bet the Pushovers from the Huge Boys Academy (the Bone Breakers). The name pretty much says it all. Sherman knows that he’ll have to think of a way for the team to lose. So, he puts together a sorry team. He even puts a blind guy on the team and makes him QB. Now he has to figure out a way to keep Jennifer out of the game. At first, he tells her that she’s been promoted to “bench captain”. When this doesn’t work and she says she still has to play, he tells her he’s worried that her hands will get swollen and she can’t knit his 10 sweaters and since nothing is more important than letting him down, she decides to sit the game out. Bernie tho realizes he can’t let his friends down and they win the game against the Pushovers.
But the Bone Breakers see Jennifer play and forfeit. Sherman asks April to have lunch with him (he’s over sports) but she says she promised Bernie. On the way there they run into Jennifer who holding up an ugly, multi-colored, too big sweater that says Bernie loves Jennifer. April says it’s sweet and she didn’t know he had a girlfriend. She says they should eat lunch together and goes to eat lunch with Sherman. Jennifer jabs Bernie with her needles and says she has nine more sweaters to go.
My Thoughts: When I saw the title of this one and read only one chapter I REALLY wanted to skip it. Possibly come back to it. I just do not like books about sports! Luckily tho it wasn’t *so* bad. What I thought about most with this one was Jennifer. I know Jennifer might not seem like the most appealing girl at Rotten School, but sometimes it’s the most unappealing ones that make the most faithful friends. And their probably the ones that in the end when the good looking ones like April-May screw you over you’ll be wishing you had one day. April-May might be attractive physically but she’s “shady”. She’s with whatever guy that’s on top at the moment. She’s all about STATUS! That is NOT someone I’d want (someone that only saw me when I was winning). How old is Bernie? Fifth grade? It took a while for me to figure it out. Then what I think is Jennifer is already good at sports. That *would* count in her favor to a lot of guys. She can cut the bangs. She could style her hair. She could lose the weight (if she wanted to). If not she could keep it and make that work for her too. You read about it ALL the time in books how the “unattractive” girl does something with her hair and clothes and makeup and VOILA! She’s no longer “Nightmare Girl”. She’s the IT girl. I seriously think that if she wanted to she could give April-May a run for her money. But what I think will happen is if another guys starts to pay her just a little attention at “Rotten School” and she starts treating Bernie like he does her, watch how quickly the tables turn. I will give him credit tho for having the good sense to put her on the team. I just hope eventually she wises up and stops chasing him. Rating: 5

R. L. Stine is my favorite author. but i only knew about ihis HORROR SERIES . and i read many of them ...but when i came 2 know about the funny series ROTTEN SCHOOL .. i could'nt control myself and the first book i read was LOSE TEAM LOSE . i like this book very much . especially the morning annoncements...... every character is different important n uniquie .... and i like way the story is narrated............. :D
Unlike the first three books in the series, Bernie doesn't have very many schemes up his sleeves in Lose, Team, Lose!, besides for getting a girl to join the football team. The plot has a faster pace than the third entry, but while there are a few jokes here and there, I thought the humor was lacking. Nevertheless, Rotten School: Lose, Team, Lose! is still a fun read (well, a reread for me) for both kids and adults.
I've never been a fan of R.L.Stine - back in the day I wanted to like Goosebumps but I found okay just a couple of them, the rest being mediocre at best - but I have to say this Rotten School - as far as this book goes - works better. This grotesque comedy is kind of funny and the great artwork brings alot of Garbage Pail Kids vibe to it. Some jokes are still an eye-rolling fest but overall I enjoyed it. I'll probably look for some other books in the series.
This book is a very entertaining book about the ''trouble kids'' wanting the football team to lose for their own benifits. It's the type of book that has all those new made of words you have never heard and makes no sense when you do. It's keeps your attention and is very humorous in a way. I would reccomend this book to people, because it also gives a good message in the end.
This book is really funny. In the beginning Bernie's team isn't good at football but when Bernie brings his secret weapon Jennifer they start winning all the games and they make it to the state championship and they win,in exchange Jenifer has to make 10 sweaters for Bernie.Join Bernie and help him win the championship.
Guess what I learned in Ms. Skermont's class? Humans are warm-blooded. I also learned about vertebrates. Slugs are invertebrates. There were no slug races in this one.
