This book is shattering. It shatters any illusions you may have had about the inate integrity of the U.S. Government. It is shattering in that it deepens the worst suspicions you may have ever entertained about the assassination of JFK to the events of 9/11.
This book is mesmerizing, a cross between a really enthralling Stephan King and John Grisham novel.
This book is terrifying, because beyond a shadow of a doubt (the facts have been checked and double-checked, and no one, so far, has come out with a repudiation) it is a true story.
While middle America still blissfully holds on to the delusion that their constitutional rights will be upheld simply because that is the American Way, laws such as the Patriot Act have recently been passed that give the U.S. government the right to arrest, detain indefinitely without indictment, force psyche-affecting drugs on and even murder, anyone, U.S. citizens included, if they are suspected of endangering U.S. security. In other words, what most Americans declare to despise most of all in totalitarian "communist" regimes, they accept with a shrug of the shoulders in their own country, thinking that if a person is accused by the U.S. government, he/she must be guilty.
What these new laws do most of all is invite misbehavior on a grand scale. If a citizen criticizes the government's actions or absence of action too loudly, especially if that citizen works directly or indirectly for the government, such as was the case with Susan Lindauer, then that person can be simply done away with, without even as much as an explanation, on the grounds that it is "secret" and the reasons cannot be revealed under the guise of "national security." That, of course, was and is always the tactic of a totalitarian government, not an open democracy such as the U.S. claims to be.
Who are the real patriots, finally, the ones who go lock-step with what the government demands, or those who question and demand justification? If the U.S. citizenry had acted responsibly and critically, they would never, for example, have accepted the invasion of Iraq by their government in 2003. Neither would they have accepted the sanctions that caused the death of so many innocent Iraqui civilians.
I strongly recommend this book to everyone who is seriously interested in knowing what is really going on in the United States. It is a non-edited version, which means there are many annoying repititions, but just ignore these and concentrate on the story as it unravels and all of its revelations.
