Shadows are often benign, nothing to truly fear, and yet our minds create from them. We see them twist and form into something sinister, something eerie, something that makes our skin crawl or our heart race. As the fog manipulates the landscape, so does it change the shadows. With our minds, we further pull from the blurry images and a tale is formed. From vengeful women to those that welcome death to haunting moments, these stories are a mixed bag of random dark tales from the mind of Amanda Leanne. Written over the past decade, this is a small compilation of stories pulled from the shadows in the fog.
Amanda Leanne began reading at a very young age and has been writing since grade school. She is a prolific reader, book collector, and writer with an interest in all aspects of art including sewing, painting, sculpting, jewelry design, soapmaking, and various other hobbies. After spending nearly a decade working on her degrees in forensic sciences, abnormal behavioral science, and neurological psychology with the prospect of joining the FBI ViCAP unit, Amanda's health took a turn for the worse. Daily struggles with her medical issues hasn't stopped her from pursuing her childhood aspirations to become an author. She currently lives with her spouse (Kris), her son, and their menagerie in the mountains of Northern Alabama. Leanne writes non-fiction books as well as fictional novels. Her non-fiction books delve into topics such as medical conditions, true crime, lifestyles, and crafting. Her fictional stories delve into mystery, thrillers, eerie tales, science fiction, and paranormal worlds.
This collection of dark and eerie stories contains eleven tales to wet your appetite. The Other side of the Mirror and Something’s Changed were certainly my favourites. I could easily see these being developed into fuller stories. I’m sure each reader will find something to appreciate and their own favourites. I especially liked that each story brought a new voice and direction with it. I would recommend this to all readers who enjoy dipping into dark tales, like me!
This was a fun, eerie little read. Some of the stories felt like it was missing something, like in Death’ll Do You Part, I wish the way divorce works was expanded on a bit more instead of being inferred but I still can’t stop thinking about the story as a whole. Dinners at 7 is another one, very interesting and very quick to the point but left me speechless and I keep wondering what dessert could have possibly been! I’d also love another short story about the aftermath of Daryl Had an Idea, the destruction caused and how people reacted after. Overall, these stories made the book for me.
Great collection of stories written in a beautiful rhythm that haunts for days after. Most of the stories make you think, and could probably have different meaning to each and every person reading them. Really enjoyable read.
The stories were good and well written but the author mentions in the preface that they are dark. I incorrectly assumed "dark" in a horror way. These are dark as in depressing and a little disturbing. I'm not one for trigger warnings but these stories are probably not good for someone with suicidal ideation. If that's not a trigger for you, then read on!
I did enjoy these well written stories. Of course, according to personal taste, some are more enjoyable than others. Some are extremely sad and others are just strange although death runs through all of them. Worth a read as you're sure to find a couple of stories that stay in your mind after the book is finished.
The stories here are short making for a faster and in some cases interesting read as you have to handle short stories like that different.
While not every story was my cup of tea and some a bit to strange or not fleshed out it had some i enjoyed. Dinner at 7 might be my favorite Death'll do you part, somethings changed, and When the chains snap were all soild stories.
Awesome stories! The first two, “Dance with Death “ and “Secret Medicine” were my two favorites but a few of them made my mouth drop because I totally didn’t see the twists coming. Great job!
There are some really good short stories in here. It could have been 4⭐ if it had been proofread/edited better. A fair few misspelled or incorrect words which just threw me out of the story each time.
My favourite short stories from the collection were:
The Day I Danced With Death - first story in the collection and I'm tearing up
Secret Medicine - Scary in the way that it's too close to reality
Daryl had an idea - Again.. TOO CLOSE TO REALITY
When the chain snaps - very descriptive and I didn't see the twist coming
This is a dark set of short stories -- and I don't just mean horror-dark, I also mean depressing, bleak, disturbing, and sad-dark. There are no happy endings (well, I guess that depends on your definition of a happy ending).
I loved the author's writing style -- my favorites in this series would probably be Under the Bright Lights and Couch Co-Op, although all of them are well-written and creative, in my opinion.
