The hit comic book series based on Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's hilarious [adult swim] animated show RICK & MORTY continues!
Catch up on the adventures of degenerate genius Rick Sanchez and his bumbling grandson Morty as they explore the outer reaches of time, space, and decency.
This collection features issues #6-10 of the comic book series, including the "Ball Fondlers Special" by guest artist Andrew MacLean, "A Very Special Blumbus," illustrated by series writer Zac Gorman, and a cyberpunk adventure across the multiverse. Plus: bonus mini-comics showcasing fan-favorite characters!"
Zac Gorman is an author and cartoonist from Michigan. He received an Emmy for his work on Over the Garden Wall (Outstanding Animated Series, 2015) and was nominated for an Annie Award for his character design work on Welcome to the Wayne.
For some reason, his webcomic Magical Game Time was archived by the Library of Congress.
Wubba lubba dub dub! Another wonderfully bizarre and deranged "Rick and Morty" comic! The first half of this volume is a story about a Morty who becomes a mad dictator in a Rick-less universe, followed by an installment of "Ball Fondlers" and a rather twisted spin on a classic and wholesome Christmas story.
Just as good as volume one, but still not quite as good as the show. Fans of the animated series will love this.
Even if I didn't get most of the jokes and didn't watch the show yet. I still enjoyed it!
Rick is such a great fun grandpa with a drinking problem Morty is a cool kid who weirdly gets a lot of girls Summer is badass The Mom hates her husband I hate Jerry too.
I am going to keep this review rather short-this is, after all, a Rick and Morty comic, not Kierkegaard. Rick and Morty go to a dimension where there are no Ricks. Morty (this dimension's) has become a dictator and Summer leads the resistance. This is the primary story. It is funny and the art? Well it looks like Rick and Morty. So if you're a fan of the hilarious cartoon, then this comic will make you chuckle. If this show isn't for you then neither is the comic book.
There are some other short stories of varying quality. The best one was the "Ball Fondler's Special" and the rest are only a page or two long and completely forgettable. So this is a great comic for any fan of the show. For the rest of you? I suggest watching the cartoon. If you like it (and I think you might) then go check out this comic.
Pleasantly surprised by how well the series transitioned into comic form. Fun, funny, clever, bizarre. And it gives good attention to the development of the characters, too....
This one may have been funnier than the first go-round, especially the side-splitting Ball Fondler's special. (I LOVED Commander Normalhead Regulararms!) The art in the main story, though, was pretty awful. I didn't even know the redhead was supposed to be Summer until someone said her name.
Well I am on a bender and will probably read all 5 volumes today. The jokes have become more sophisticated with references to '80s and 90's science fiction. That does not mean there are no immature sex jokes. The filler pages were going over my head as they were next level bizarre but enjoyable none the less. There is a whole weird sequence not related to the plot and in the end, you realize they are watching interdimensional tv.
Some fun stories, some ok, some not so great! Great artwork, and the story is pretty much just ok, and that was my main problem, I was worrying so much about the characters not being in character with the show, which was fine, Rick and Morty too were both well written, it was just that the stories were mediocre at best with nothing new to add.
Encore plus fun et plus déstabilisant que le premier tome. On y trouve du cyberpunk, de l'absurde et du glauque, c'est intelligent et dans le ton de la série ! CHRONIQUE -> http://pugoscope.fr/3471-rick-and-mor...
Kinda hard to argue the comic series is canon with the first arc in this. My personal headcanon is maybe the universe had a Rick who passed a long time ago, but someone else might be able to give a more creative excuse. Anyway the first arc is pretty decent, it’s very action and drama oriented with not too much comedy but it’s still entertaining. I don’t think the story is too meaningful or interesting however, and it does feel pretty pointless (which I think is the joke). It’s a fine arc but nothing amazing, one of the weaker ones so far. The second arc is a bit more fun, it’s a comic entirely about the ball fondelers and one of their adventures. It’s actually kinda interesting to learn more about this team and the characters genuinely are pretty fun, I could probably read a 6 issue comic series or vindicators 2 style mini series about them. The joke about all the army men having lives is also pretty funny and possibly the best version of this joke in the shows history. The final story is a little interesting in how it portrays alien traditions, but it’s moreso just weird. It’s also not that funny of an issue, but I do like the final joke and the final page is oddly sweet. Definitely the weakest of these 5 chapters but I wouldn’t say any of them are quite bad. The short stories in this are heaps better than the last volume and I’d even argue are the best thing about this one. The Morty box and the doofus Rick one are genuinely thought were scenes from the show and the others are very funny. This volume is definitely weaker than the first but it still captures a lot of the spirit of the show and has some great moments, the specials are definitely the highlight but the main chapters included are definitely not bad.
I’ve rated this volume a bit higher than volume 1. I always enjoy seeing alternate universe ricks and mortys, how different they are to our c-137 rick and morty, what happens to morty without a rick etc. I also think the christmas monster guy thing at the end was really creepy - how he was able to see what was in Morty’s room, and how this fact managed to terrify even rick. Idk, it was such a short segment but scared me 😂 However, I think the art in this volume didnt capture me as much as volume 1 (not as colourful, and maybe not as true to the show?). I also feel like graphic novel rick isn’t as smart/clever as the rick from the show - at least going based off of what i’ve seen from the first 2 volumes.
If you like the show you'll like the comics. Only downside was the art style changed half way through. I thought of it as a different universe and kept going.
I originally read something that I thought was called Rik and Morty book 1. Then I got this, Rik and Morty Volume 2. And it has some of the same stories as in the other book I read. Not sure on what the deal is. Anyway, it contained good Rik and Morty adventures and I certainly enjoyed it.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
The main story invokes the spirit of Rick and Morty but doesn't have much energy. And then the second half of the book is burned off with a long story without Rick and Morty and a bunch of short stories satirizing Christmas, lamely trotting out the required send-ups of A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life that even cannibalism can't spice up.
Main story was great but, giving 4 stars this time because “The ball Fondlers special” felt like a lazy way to fill extra pages. I’m honestly not reading Rick and Morty to read about completely random characters that I don’t know or care about. That’s my only beef with this volume.
Bua.
