Love, love, love the concept

The idea of a well written tight list of go-to dessert recipes excited me and this cookbook pretty well hits the mark. It is written in clear casual English as each recipe includes a very short intro/history. This is such a pleasant change from many a blogger who gives NaNa's life story or a grocery cart full of superlatives with every recipe. I also love that there is a picture with every recipe (It should be a law!) The only reason I did not give this book five stars is that, for me, there were too many recipes that my family would not enjoy and or that required ingredients that I would not use beyond that recipe. For example, the brownie recipe called for cognac. I don't want to buy a bottle to make brownies. Yes, I am sure I can google a substitute for cognac, but simple substitutes are not always available for more crucial ingredients in other recipes. My advice is to peruse the table of contents and if the recipes excited your interest, as most did mine, then dig in.

Bought this and asked our library to get a copy as well. The recipes look AWESOME. I can't wait to try some of them out!

Like the other Food52 book I reviewed, I'm hooked on how it's written, photographed and makes me want to begin every recipe.

I don't cook very often, but I do like to flip through food porn and think about cooking, and this book is lavishly illustrated with mouthwatering photography and full of easy, simple tips on baking that don't make it look intimidating. The recipes seem easy to follow for home cooks and there were plenty of ideas outside the typical cakes like bars and breakfast goods.

Baking, compiled by the editors Amanda Hesser and Merril Stubbs of Food52, consists of 60 recipes in the gospel of "uncommitted baking" that won't break the back, bank, pantry, or skillset of home cooks who are short on time and long on need for its contents. This beautifully produced book, in the high quality that readers of 10 Speed Press products have come to expect, is divided into seven sections: Breakfast Goods, Cookies & Bars, Fruit Desserts, Custardy Cakes & Puddings, Everyday Cakes, Special Occasion Cakes, and Savory Baked Goods.

What truly sets this cook book apart, however, is the TLC with which it is arranged. Specifically, an early page headed "Baking Basics" directs the reader to specific tips and lessons offered on a range of topics, including: Making & Storing Ingredients, Shortcuts & Kitchen Hacks, Essential Baking Techniques, and Garnishing, Presenting & Packaging. Each header then identifies the seven or so lessons under that heading--complete with the page on which they occur. Consequently, while one might be less keen on the recipe for Pumpkin Pie Crumble (p. 124), but surely can apply the lesson found on that page for How to Make Cake Flour at Home can quickly asses pages to which they will want to backtrack for the knowledge dropped there. In addition, just before the book's index there is a three-page life saver by occasion type (e.g., baking with kids, for the freezer, for a bake sale, etc.). These will doubtless prove a real life-saver for anyone presented with the happy news that a family member has forgotten to mention a baking task to which they've been committed that has come due.

All told, this book is a gem and I would heartily recommend it for your own library and/or as a gift to the new and/or accomplished bakers in your life. Enjoy!

I thought I would find more tips and tricks in this book than some of their other collections. Strangely, I did not. The focus is on simple desserts and that make explain it. There were all sorts of desserts that I have a serviceable recipe for such as clafouti, schlumpf and slump. There were a few recipes that I will make from here; only one being something totally new and another being a gluten free option. (Pumpkin Pie Crumble, Gluten Free Lemon Blackberry Corn Cake)

The other three that I am going to make are recipes that are buried in a pile in my kitchen. Instead of trying to find them, I am going to use these. (Italian Cornmeal Cookies, Brown Sugar Shortbread, and Pudding Chomeur)

This book would be fantastic for someone getting into baking but who did not grow up with recipes from the back of soup cans or hanging with a grandmother. It updates the idea of the homey and easy dessert. There are a few showy desserts that could wow a crowd or a visiting parson.

it had some interesting ideas for recipes.
sometimes things seemed less "pull off in a snap" and way more pretentious.
i'd love to try some of the recipes however.

I consider myself blessed to come from a long line of solid cooks who know their way around a kitchen. My mother was in her element baking dozens upon dozens of cookies and breads for Christmas. My grandmother kept a variety of freshly baked treats in her kitchen "just in case company stops by." Both would appreiate Food52's newest offering, Baking: 60 Sensational Treats You Can Pull Off In a Snap.

Personaly, I'm thrilled that the 60 treats includes some breakfast treats (I have a love affair with scones going) and some savory delights (pizza dough! Basil onion cornbread! Cheese crispettes!) for times you want a special something that's not sweet. The recipes are divided into seven sections: breakfast, cookies & bars, fruit desserts, custardy cakes & puddings, everyday cakes, special occasion cakes, and savory baked goods. The recipes themselves are clearly written with ingredients listed in a column on the left, an introduction to begin (which often includes serving suggestons, help with less familiar ingredients, and personal anecdotes from the contributor'a experience), and step by step instructions below. Any special technique instructions are also included at the end. (This is why it is always a good idea to read any recipe through to the end before beginning.) For example, p. 63 instructs readers "How to Cut in Butter."

The fact that each section is delineated by a full-spread color photo (try not to drool) and each recipe includes an equally scrumptious image (if only it were scratch & sniff!) had me me ogling the pages like teenaged boys who've gotten their hands on their first swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated. What really hooked me in and made me fall in love with this book were the slight twists on familiar treats that made me exclaim things like "of course!" and "genius!" aloud. The addition of cinnamon and yogurt in "Bestest Banana Bread" now seems like something I should have known before. The recipe for Spiced Parsnip Cake (parsnips replacing carrots) is pure genius. And although it sounds really odd, I'm willing to trust the authors that the addition of a can of tomato soup will enhance a spice cake with cream cheese frosting in ways that will leave your guests asking for more.

I'd like to thank Blogging For Books for the review copy I received free in exchange for this review. I am thrilled to add this to my cookbook collection and look forward to baking delicious treats from it for years to come!

This is a beautifully illustrated book on quick bakes. The recipes are simple and most are written on one page with a beautiful photograph on the opposite page. I read through it a few times then chose 5 recipes to make.

I made the pumpkin pie tart for Thanksgiving. The recipe was easy to follow, and was easy to make. The topping was perfect! Crunchy and enough sugar and spice for me. The pumpkin filling tasted like spiced puree, not pumpkin pie custard. I might spice it more next time or add another egg. The bottom was more like a cake than a crispy tart crust. Good tasting, but unexpected.

I also made the Cuppa Sticka cobbler. It was easy to make, but it seemed bland to me with only white sugar and vanilla for flavor. I used 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 cup brown and added apple pie spice to the fruit and cinnamon to the batter. My husband liked it and said it was very good, but he'd rather have a regular cobbler.

I also made the blueberry torte. When I read that it is actually a no-bake cheesecake, I switched to a square spring form pan and made cheesecake bars. The crust was easy to make. Note that it does bake for 15 minutes then cool for 1 hour. The filling was easy to make. The only changes I made were to add vanilla and whip the whipped cream with the cream cheese rather than just fold them together. The blueberry sauce was easier than I expected to do, but I didn't pour the one cup of sauce over the cheesecake. It never thickened so it seemed to wet to pour over the filling. The whole thing takes about 8 hours from start to finish, which surprised me since the story that preceded the recipe said the original could be made in 30 minutes. It tasted good, but I need to thicken the sauce and thin out the crust next time.

I tried the molasses rolls. The dough came together easily. The only problem I had was that refrigerating the dough stopped the rise after 2 hours. I had to take the dough out of the fridge and let it rise at room temperature in order to knead and shape the rolls. They taste okay, but don't have a lot of flavor. I wonder if the recipe needs more sugar for the yeast? Or if room temperature proofing would be better? The crumb turned out like the white rolls from the store.

I will save the cold oven pound cake for spring. I can recognize the techniques that make it lighter than a traditional pound cake so I'm excited to try it.

Overall, I think this is a beautifully illustrated cookbook with clever takes on classic recipes. It's not for me though, since each recipe needs adjustments for flavor or functionality or something else.

Having grown up during the sixties and seventies and having spent many hours in the kitchens of my aunts and Grandmother who attended many a state fair with entries in pies, cakes, pickles and the such to garner a blue ribbon or two between them I looked forward to perusing this book. I have learned the value of time honored recipes that have been handed down through the family. I am fond of older recipes that have been passed along. There are recipes within the covers of this book that remind me of recipes I had forgotten or lost over the years and few that brought back great memories of the women in the area getting together to cook while the men worked on a neighbor's barn, house or coral that had been damaged due to storms, hurricane or tornadoes that had passed through. My Aunt Trudy use to make a Tomato Soup Cake that she would never share, but the one in the book taste just like hers did. My personal favorite is the Apple Brown Betty With Gingersnap Crumbs. These recipes are easy to follow and do not require years of training to prepare. Enjoy.

Opening this cookbook and reading the introduction, I immediately felt at home. These writers talk to you like an aunt at a family party might, complete with insistence that these recipes only taste complicated, urging you not to worry you can make these, insisting it's easy, I'll show you! Though my black and white Kindle pages prevented me from fully appreciating the glossy photos, the names of the recipes alone had my mouth watering. I decided to put the simplicity and tastiness of the recipes to the test; to evaluate the claim that with this book in hand (or on a flour-covered counter), you can whip up a delicious treat without a lot of time or fuss, About two hours before my book club meeting I took the recipe for Tomato and Cream Cheese Turnovers and made a slight substitution by using some Pillsbury crescent dough (since I didn't leave time for picking up pastry dough and I had it on hand). By the end of book club, all of the turnovers were gone and nobody believed how simple the recipe was, insistent they tasted all kinds of subtle flavors that couldn't have come from just a few ingredients. All in all, I'd say success! I'll be pulling this book out around Christmas for new cookie recipes that don't make me pull my hair out ( or crush up a million candy canes and bake sandwich cookie halves all for one recipe. Who has time for these things??).

Thanks to Ten Speed Press and Netgalley for letting me have a peek at these recipes in exchange for an honest review (My book club thanks you too!)

I love “Food52”, and if you’ve never heard of them, I highly recommend after reading my review, you Google them and subscribe to their newsletters. They are fabulous! Their recipes!? Genius…

This book is filled with recipes that I’m sure I will use over and over again. Updates on classic recipes, new takes on modern favorites and so much more!

The book is divided into 7 main categories – each more delicious and flavorful than the last.Food52 Baking is a fabulous cookbook by the team at Food52. This book has wonderful recipes that use fresh ingredients to make that dish pop. This book not only comes with great recipes but with helpful tips on stuff like how to get your cake frosted just right. With recipes like Blueberry Scones to Peach Tart and even how to make your own pizza crust, this book is destined to be a hit!

For me alone, the pictures made the book, just looking at the pictures makes you hungry for these recipes! This book has recipes that I never would have thought would work like the cream cheese cookies and I love the fact that most of theses recipes call for under 10 ingredients. My only problem now is deciding which recipe I want to try out first!!

Thank You to Food52 for sharing your excellent recipes for the world to know!!

I would like to thank Ten Speed Press and NetGalley for providing me with an electronic copy to review.

The authors of this book immediately try to reassure readers and explain that the key is to find reliable recipes to follow, as well as great tips that will make you a better baker. Accompanying photos to the recipes give the impression that the baked goods were made in a home kitchen. In fact, this book is intended for the home cook to be able to bake great desserts in a limited time period. I love the tips - both the alternate recipes and the helpful hints to make baking easier. Broken down into manageable sections such as Breakfast Goods, Cookies and Bars, and Special Occasion Cakes, Food 52 Baking is sure to please most baking enthusiasts. No matter your experience level, this baking book has easy to follow instructions and great tips of the trade. I would recommend this cookbook to those who have a desire to learn to bake or for those experienced bakers looking for some great new recipes.

They promise hassle-free baking that can be done on a weeknight and they deliver. I'm the sort of cook/baker that cannot meal plan beyond the next meal so I do end up baking the same 5 recipes that I know inside and out and which use just my only bowl without making me wash it between steps. Thanks to this book, I can add (at least) 30 more to this repertoire. Some of the recipes require some prior planning to have some of the ingredients but most of them are simply combinations of things you'd have on hand if you bake with any regularity. Flipping through it, you can succumb to a skepticism that you could actually bake some breakfast biscuits in the morning (I'm /not/ a morning person) but you know, I woke up one day 10 minutes before my alarm so I did just that. Baked some biscuits in the morning...for that breakfast.
The photos are pretty gorgeous and plentiful. Many of the tips are concerned with the final appearance of the baked goods which admittedly is rarely foremost in my mind but many of them also improve final crumb.

I really enjoyed this book and it's recipes.

It's a fairly straightforward cookbook (nothing 'extra' that detracts from it's title) and I really appreciated the "Baking Basics" - especially since my baking skills are pretty much not there :) and I really liked the "Garnishing, presenting & packaging" aspect since I'm a graphic designer and love to make things look nice and presentable (of course I want it to taste good too if it's my food!)

There are interesting recipes, with a touch of international flair (which I love), like the "Baked Cardamom French Toast with Syrupy Meyer Lemons" or the Cream Cheese Cookies, Cardamom Currant Snickerdoodles (yeah, I'm all about the Cardamom!), I really liked the 'Kitchen Sink Oatmeal Cookies" :D

I'd recommend this book to bakers between the beginners and intermediate phases. It's fun but baking is after all a science. And I flunked science in high school ;)

The recipes in Food52 Baking look scrumptious. Many have been gathered from readers, handed down from family members. All are meant to be easy; cookies and cakes, scones and other delectable that can be done with ingredients readily available and on hand.
The majority of the recipes are just that: quick, easy, and not too fussy to be made without completely destroying your kitchen. There is a recipe for scones that I MUST try. And the "Cuppa Cuppa Sticka" Peach and Blueberry Cobbler is my next dish for church potluck. There are some fancier recipes as well for the more adventurous baker; Banana Cake with penuche Frosting and Savory Galette with Greens to name just two.
I do like the photos that accompany the recipes, and the recipes and written plainly and in an easy to follow format. I look forward to more from the editors of Food52.

Food 52 is an online community for cooks of all levels. This is the second cookbook I've seen that has come from their website and this one is all about baking. What I really liked was that in the introduction the authors note that whether you consider yourself an "experienced" baker or not, you CAN bake yummy desserts and treats. This book provides 60 baking recipes - mostly desserts, but there is a chapter on savory baking - that pretty much anyone can make. There are lots of great pictures and definitely a few recipes I want to try. I'm especially excited about the Overnight Orange Refrigerator Rolls because my husband loves the Pillsbury orange rolls, but I'd rather make something from scratch and not buy stuff like Pillsbury. Definitely a good source for simple, but yummy recipes.

I was very intrigued by this book and found it quit interesting but I don't believe the recipes can be pulled off in a snap, at least not for a novice cooker like myself. Judging only by the title I thought the recipes in here would be simple and quick but they don't appear that way. In all fairness I have not yet tested a recipe. I do love the simple clean format of the book. Every recipe has a picture attached and the instructions are clear and labeled with the ingredients neatly listed the side. A MAJOR plus! I loved the layout just wasn't thrilled with the complexity of the recipes, but a more experienced cook would probably love this book. I received a copy of this book from the blogging for books program in exchange for an honest review.

I love to bake, so this book was a natural choice for me. I'm definitely more of a savory than sweet kind of gal, so I thoroughly enjoyed the savory recipes. Grilled flatbreads, pizza dough, cheese crispettes and more combine with the more sweet recipes such as Brown Butter Cupcake Brownies, Chocolate Dump-It Cake, Peach Tart and Cream Cheese Cookies to create a lovely book with a little something for everyone. There's even some gluten-free options!

The book is well made with beautiful photos of the finished dishes. It's a great little cookbook to try your hand at baking. Happy Cooking!

I received this book from NetGalley, for my honest review. Thank you!!

This cookbook has so many wonderful recipes! I really like this cookbook! The pictures are yummy and delicious! They make me want to go right out in the kitchen and start baking! The recipes give both the cups and the grams, so whichever you are most comfortable with, they make it easy. The instructions are very detailed and easy to follow. I tried the brown sugar shortbread, when warm, it is soo yummy and melts in your mouth.

I subscribe to this blog, so I was very excited when I got to preview their new cookbook!! I would recommend to any baker, who wants some yummy treats!! Thank you for all the wonderful recipes!!!

Best of Food52 - A compilation of consistently perfect recipes for busy people who don't sweat in the kitchen all day. Small collection but Love the variety of recipes and quality pictures.

Plenty of simply recipes using seasonal fruit and several simple recipes for potlucks, bake sales or simply to leave on your counter. You might need to buy a decorative cake stand for your table to keep these. Just like you'd need a big wooden bread box once you start making bread at home.

The stellar cover page brownies are a bit of more effort than regular brownies. There are many easier, decadent brownies but I must make these sometime as it has managed to make itself to the cover of the book!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The beginning talks about how these recipes are actually quick & easy, not like other recipes that claim to be easy but take forever and require special tools.

The photos are gorgeous and the directions are written very well. The cream cheese cookies, magic espresso brownies (as seen on the front cover), and summer fruit galette are just a few recipes I can't wait to try!

An outstanding addition to the Food52 series of books. Keeps you on track for simple, hassle-free baking, while offering a few unusual ingredients in easy to follow fashion. I am a cobbler fan and the "Cuppa Cuppa Sticka" Peach and Blueberry Cobbler turned out to be delicious, as was the Spiced Parsnip Cake. Definitely worth a look. Recommended.
