WARNING: THIS REVIEW ISN'T WHAT I'D CALL "CHILD FRIENDLY"
It's a snow day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See. True story. That's my backyard.
Like every other snow day, I was woken up this morning AN ENTIRE F-ING HOUR EARLIER than our regular school-day "get up time" by a couple of screaming banshees. The youngest bounded out of his room hollering his plans to build an epic snowman . . . which reminded me of this little story.
"One wintery day I made a snowman very round and tall. The next day when I saw him, he was not the same at all."
Snowmen At Night tells what happens at night (duh) to the snowman you built during the day. The story is adorable, the artwork is quality . . . .
and apparently? It is terrifying. This book scared the crap out of my youngest. When he was just a wee little lad, he had a problem realizing that this:
was actually true.
Rather than thinking how fun it could be for snowmen to have adventures like this after he went to bed:
my kid had visions of these guys tromping up the steps to kill him in his sleep:
Boy am I glad that phase is over. Seriously, who's afraid of a little ol' snowman? They're not only friendly, but they offer some sage advice as well . . .
And if they give you trouble? It's pretty easy to destroy them . . .
If your kids love snowmen the way my nephew loves snowmen, they will love this book. It is about what snowmen do at night when people are watching. They PARTY.
When he finds his snowman somewhat melted one morning, a young boy wonders what the snowy figure might have gotten up to the night before, imagining a series of exciting events, from a trip to the park to a sports competition involving all of the snowman's friends. The snowmen enjoy themselves immensely in this imaginary scenario, something which offers potential comfort to the children who observe their deteriorated condition the next day...
The first of a series of picture-books from author/illustrator team Caralyn and Mark Buehner about the doings of those popular snow figures, Snowmen at Night pairs an entertaining imaginary tale told in rhyme with bright, colorful artwork. The book would make an excellent read-aloud at story time - especially in the winter! - while the artwork provides a more interactive experience, in which children can search for the hidden images in the illustrations. For my part, I found a lot of Santas in the snow! Recommended to all young children who loves snowmen, and wonder what they get up to at night, as well as to those looking for rhyming picture-books with a wintry theme.
Reread this after remembering how much I loved it when I was little. Every December, before the holidays, my elementary school music teacher Mrs. F read this to us. Every single year. And I just loved how all of us kids stopped our whispering and all leaned in slightly to see the pictures and hear the story of how snowmen spend their nights. This book brings back so many dear childhood memories. Ahh, so good <3
A lively rhyming story that imagines the hijinks that snowmen get up to when we are sleeping. Kids will enjoy hunting for the images that are hidden in the impressive illustrations. - Paula C. -
I can't help it. This book just speaks to me me on a fundamental level. I never get tired of reading it. The art is also just beautifully put together. Snow covered moonlit nights have never looked more like I remember them when I was a kid.
Did you like making a snowman as a kid? I know I did! Children put a lot of time into making snowmen and go back for days to check out their masterpiece. In this delightful winter story, the little boy noticed that his snowman looked different the next day. Because of this, he started to wonder what snowmen do at night. He imagines the exciting life that happens when snowmen get together such as enjoying hot chocolate, racing, ice skating, play baseball, a huge snowball fight, and many more exciting activities! I believe that it’s always fun to escape reality and imagine the “what ifs”. Another aspect of this story that I really enjoyed was the fact that it rhymed. I enjoyed the flow of reading it.
I feel that there are many activities that could be done with this in my class. We could look or the rhyming words. I might even do a “guess the covered word” activity. I think this might also lead to fun writing project where the students write about what they think snowmen do at night or pretend they are a snowman and talk about their night. The illustrations are the cherry on top to this book. They are full of bright colors and soft lines that jump out at the reader.
The combination of an enjoyable story matched with captivating illustrations make this story a must read! Has anyone used this book with their class already? I’m hoping my class will enjoy it this winter as much as I did!
Simple but bouncy rhymes detail the overnight exploits of snowmen when everyone is asleep, readers learn they sled, skate, drink cold cocoa, and participate in snowball fights among other things. The pictures are almost three-dimensional in places, where you expect the snowball to leap off the page. Upon reading the copyright page, the illustrator alerts readers they can find a cat, rabbit, Santa face, and a T-Rex in “all these wintertime scenes” but they are thoroughly hidden. I had massive difficulty finding them, and occasionally I simply gave up my search, as some of the small seek and finds are the size of your fingernail and hidden in the spindly drawn tree limbs. If reading this after your family makes their own snowman, be prepared to sneak outside to ensure your snowman acts accordingly, as kids will be looking for evidence of the fun it had overnight.
I've owned this book for years but didn't appreciate it enough until this year reading it to my granddaughter. She loves to count the snowmen while I love the rhythm and rhyme. There are so many fun & creative picture in it, that I don't mind reading it over and over!
One wintry morning, the Buehners opened their front door to find that the snowman they had created the night before had traveled several years, and was now facing the front door. It made them start to wonder….
The color tone in the illustrations is well done. Having a snowman with a pickle nose was a nice touch but for the purpose of a seek and find the pickle could have been hidden on all pages. The mystery of snowmen moving around at night was never truly addressed. Very commercialized view of winter season.
The premise is cute, writing is good (subjective, I know) and the illustrations are lovely. However, I found the book to be a little sexist, what with the snow"men" looking primarily like men (as we would attribute it in the U.S. anyway), that I could tell in most of the images--I suppose snow"women" could dress similar to what a "snowman" looks like. That's a hard one, since I know they also aren't actual humans but, they are at least somewhat representative of humans. But then there was the part about the snow mothers making cocoa, but why not snow fathers, too? They can't make cocoa? For a children's book that I read to my daughter, I would feel more comfortable if this issues were taken into account. However, I have yet to read "Snowmen at Christmas", but from what I have seen in the illustrations it seems to be inclusive of both genders.
A lovely rhyming picture book that explains why the snowman that looked fine during the day, then looks all droopy in the morning. What happens at night? Well, the answer is that the snowmen all get together and play all kinds of snowmen games all night long. They race, skate, and sled, throw snowballs, bump each other and roll on the ground until they are exhausted. A wonderful book to read aloud on a cold snowy day!
Have you ever wondered what snowmen do at night? Well, they have a lot of fun sledding, playing baseball with snowballs, and much more.
I love how the text moves on the page and interacts with the illustrations. I think any story like this captures students' imaginations. They might be looking at the snowman in their front yard a little closer now....
This isn't anything too profound, but it has rhyming (which I'm always a fan of esp. for reading aloud to kids) and it's silly (which I'm also a big fan of).
I don't think I loved it the first time I read it, but I recently re-read while babysitting and liked it a lot. It's a fun, creative book with nice illustrations to add to the mix of winter books.
The concept is excellent; however, I really think it doesn't live up to the potential it has for creativity. Needs more whimsy, wit, and mischief. It does provide challenging hidden pictures on every page to find. Bonus: The oil/acrylic rendering of light in the book.
A great book to read during winter theme months especially for children who don't experience snow this is a great time for children to make fake snow and make their own snowman as well as practice small medium and large.
What do snowmen do during the night that makes them look so different the next day? This book is really cute...imagine all the things your snowman does with the other snowmen after all the kids who made them have gone to bed.
I bought this for my grandsons and I can't wait to give it to them. Such a cute story and the illustrations are top-notch and so appealing. I'm sure this will be one that becomes one of their favorites.
This is a cute children’s picture book about the adventures and fun that snowmen get up to while everyone is asleep at night, and perhaps that’s why they start to look like they’re dropping and sliding over.
Kinda a cheesy storyline; but I think it would help kids to think outside the box. Give them ideas of things to wonder about when thinking about creative writing. Stimulates imagination.
