It’s April Fools' Day — and Judy’s birthday — and Mr. Todd has a trick or two of his own planned in the latest Judy Moody tale for newly independent readers.
April Fools' Day just happens to be one of Judy Moody’s favorite days of the year. And this year she’s got one thing on her the perfect prank she’s going to play on Mr. Todd, thanks to an awesome present from her brother, Stink. Gotcha, Mr. Todd! But in all the excitement over spaghetti trees, April fish, and fools' errands, Judy worries that something else will be forgotten by Mr. Todd and Class 3T April 1 also happens to be Judy’s birthday! Gulp! Will her friends remember in time, or will Judy be the fool this year? And just what might Mr. Todd have up his sleeve?
"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.
It's clear. Teachers Rock. Also, birthdays are more important to some people than others. Lastly, April Fool's is, too.
A quick read. Medium excitement on this one. I think because we are a year in the pandemic mode, anything that a teacher was doing to celebrate with class was either so foreign to these at-home, zoom kids or far from achievable, that the whole situation was not appealing as other books. I will be avoiding "classroom" stories for a while, I think.
Is a great start for kids who want to start reading chapter books. Has a nice balance of pictures and text. Love that it gets both girls and boys introduced to characters that will want them wanting more stories from Judy Moody and Stink🤓
Judy Moody, and her class is learning all about April Fool's Day all around the world, and how other nations celebrate it. Judy decides to play a prank on her teacher Mr. Todd, but when he reminds her that the day isn't over yet she spends the rest of the day on alert. What prank could Mr. Todd play on Judy Moody?
Genre: Fiction Humor Grade: 2-3 This book was funny. It is a good April Fool's book to read to younger children. In this book they show how jokes can make someone feel sad/bad but it also lets kids know that jokes are just for fun. I think this book would be a good read for a younger class that may have some student that like playing jokes and for students that take joke too seriously.
An amazing book full of funny bits. The sense of humor is excellent. My daughter laughed a lot during this book. The Illustrations are beautiful. Especially the main characters and Mr Todd look so amazing.
A fun addition to the Judy Moody and Friends series. Mr. Todd teaches his class about the history of April Fools' Day, and pranks ensue. I love how these books are always separated into three chapters.
