Personally, I like the different ways fairy tales are used to portray moral lessons. The villain usually creates the situation for the lesson so that is why i chose a good villain.

The only answer I specifically expect from a fairytale is the HEA. Every good book should have a strong villain. A handsome hero maybe trite, but you can't go wrong. I'm a romantic at heart so, I love a romance--people should feel love and whether it is a person, ideal or object I think every book needs a protagonist passionate about something.

What I really like about a fairy tale retelling is a reimagining of the heroine into something non-traditional - no wilting wall flower waiting pasively for her prince. Examples: McKinley's Beauty, Levine's Ella, Hines' Snow, Talia and Danielle, Mercedes Lackey's Elemental ladies. But that wasn't one of the choices, was it? :) so I voted for villian.

I actually like the adventure the best. The new characters, the different cultures and settings, possibly some strange food, it's love at first sight! Sure a handsome prince sounds charming, but unless there is an accompanying picture, I'm not buying it.

I can't believe villains are winning double over happy endings, no wonder this world is fighting in wars all the time with so many people embracing the evil villains rather than happy endings!!!!

I voted for the HEA but I really like fairy tales for their archetypal stories. Every culture has its own legends and tales, but many of the characters and themes cross cultures, and I find that fascinating. Plus, I like the fact that, at least in fairy tales, good triumphs, virtue is rewarded, and justice is served.
