Katie O’Sullivan Stopped By for an Interview!
Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Katie O’Sullivan, author of Son of Mermaid, now available for purchase on Amazon. Check below for the link to buy your very own copy.
Tell us a bit about your formative years. Where’d you grow up? Did you have siblings, two parents in your home, pets?
I grew up in a small town in northern New Jersey and had a typical suburban childhood. Two younger sisters, stay-at-home mom and a dad who traveled sometimes for work, but was most often home in time for dinner. We spent summers down on the Jersey Shore, swimming, sailing and dreaming of mermaids. My sisters and I begged until my parents let us have a dog, and now that I have my own home my children have never had to beg for pets. Well, that’s not quite true. I’m done with gerbils and hamsters. Each child had one. No more. Our two big dogs are quite enough trouble as it is!
How did you decide to write in this genre?
When I first started writing fiction, the class I was in urged me to write in an adult genre. I chose romantic suspense, and have two books published and a third contemporary romance out on submission right now. But my first love has been Young Adult for a long time now, and I’m thrilled to have found a home for SON OF A MERMAID at Crescent Moon Press.
I love the idea of connecting with readers while they are still young enough to really care about the characters and stories for long after they’re done reading the book. The YA genre has changed so much over the years, and young readers have so many more choices and opportunities to find books that inspire them!
Who are you currently reading?
I’m a really voracious reader… I just finished Fatal Affair, by Marie Force, as well as Dead Ever After, the last book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Before those I cried my way through John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. That book should come with a warning label!
I like to have one ebook and one book in paper going, because the iPad and nook aren’t always the right option. Next up on my TBR piles are Divergent, by Veronica Roth, and an ARC of Ascendant, by Rebecca Taylor.
Do you write with music or background noise or do you prefer silence? If you write with music or noise, what’s your preference?
I prefer silence when I write, and with a house full of teenagers and big dogs, silence can be hard to come by! I do most of my writing while the kids are at school, or while everyone is asleep. It’s harder in the summertime, obviously, and not just because of my own kids. We live in a summer community on Cape Cod, where most of the homes are empty for a good chunk of the year and then teeming with life during July and August. Luckily, we’re planning on installing central air sometime soon so it will be less of an issue going forward, lol.
Do you have any upcoming appearance, book signings or readings? If yes, where can readers meet you?
I just enjoyed my book launch celebration in Chatham over Memorial Day weekend – the town was packed with visitors for the holiday, and my event was a lot of fun! I love chatting with readers, and meeting new and old friends alike!
I’m busy setting up events for the rest of the summer – so far, I have book signings and chats scheduled for June 15 at Beach Cottage Living in Harwichport, on June 20 at The Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis, and July 29 and August 5 at the Whyddah Pirate Museum in Provincetown. I’ll be setting up at the “Music in the Port” annual Wednesday night strolls in Harwichport during July and August as well – check my website or Facebook page for up-to-date event listings!
Katie O’Sullivan lives with her family and big dogs next to the ocean on Cape Cod, drinking way too much coffee and inventing new excuses not to dust. She writes YA and romantic suspense novels, and works as an editor making other people’s words sparkle. For the last four years, she’s been the Editor of CapeWomenOnline.com magazine and writes a column entitled “The Write Way.”
She hopes her debut YA novel, SON OF A MERMAID, will make a big splash this summer, engaging young readers with a Cape Cod tale of a boy who discovers both his roots and his destiny far below the waters of Nantucket Sound.
