Even though Resurrecting Harry is a book about an escape artist (Harry Houdini) who is able to escape the chains of death, one of my favorite characters to write was that of purgatories keeper – Jaden.
Jaden is more than an angelic creature; he is the voice of Erich’s conscious and a catalyst for the story to happen. I also wanted to make sure he was the opposite of what most would expect when they think of a celestial being. He wears leather, gambles, and doesn’t have much faith in romantic love. In fact, he thinks that it’s Bess’s deep love for Harry that is ruining her life after his death.
In his jaded wisdom, Jaden enters a wager with Harry, giving him a new body and younger face. If he can convince Bess to call of the séance she has scheduled on the anniversary of Harry’s death, he will give Harry (Erich) a second chance at a life with her.
One of my favorite playlist songs to listen to while I was writing the book was Celine Dion’s Taking Chances, because both Erich and Bess have to close their eyes and take a leap of faith. As much as this book is about the Houdini’s, it’s about treasuring life and living it to the fullest.

Constance Phillips lives in Ohio with her husband, two ready-to-leave-the-nest children, and four canine kids. Her perfect fantasy vacation would involve hunting Dracula across Europe with her daughter, who also digs that kind of stuff. When she’s not writing about fairies, shifters, vamps, and guardian angels, she’s working side-by-side with her husband in their hardwood flooring business.
Constance is actively involved in her local Romance Writers of America chapter (MVRWA) and the Southeast Michigan chapter of the United States Pony Club.
