Ideas are everywhere - conversations (your own or overheard), news items (TV, radio, newspapers, online), things you observe, things you daydream about - your mission if you want to be a writer is to grab onto the next thing you see/hear/read that grabs you, and play with it and tease it out and work it up until you have the bones of a story. You can't let statistics about rejections bother you - if we all did that, nothing would ever get written. Don't write to be published - if you're good enough, it will happen. Write because it stimulates and challenges and intrigues you, and persevere when it frustrates and infuriates and depresses you. Give yourself a deadline and stick to it. Write every day, even if it means getting up an hour early. Dont be discouraged, be confident. Good luck!(less)

As the anesthetic began to take effect. the surgeon removed his mask and smiled at her. 'Sleep well,' said the man who had been stalking her silently for over a month. (less)

August 2025

Hello everyone,

Happy August, hope everyone’s well. The paperback of Moving On hit the shops yesterday (July 31) – it’s significant because it’s a publication date, but also because it’s the first of my books to be published in the UK as well as Ireland. The larger size that came out in Ireland in February wasn’t published in the UK as they generally don’t publish in that size. So it’s good to have

“She replaced her phone, closed her eyes, and forced herself to begin measuring flour, sugar, and butter. For some reason mental baking usually sent her right to sleep.”
Roisin Meaney, Semi-Sweet

“Patrick thought about the meals around Geraldine and Stephen's kitchen table. The roast chickens fragrant with tarragon and lemon, the rich casseroles, Stephen's tangy, oozing blue-cheese burgers. The mismatched crockery, the casual, relaxed conversation. Something Hannah had baked- raspberry roulade, apple strudel, sour-cream coffee cake- usually rounding off the meal.”
Roisin Meaney, Semi-Sweet

“young women accusing him of ruining their lives. He’d walked to work along sunny, tree-lined streets, remembering the crowded, silent tubes of London, the snarl of rainy-day rush-hour traffic, and he’d swum in the clear blue sea at weekends, eyeing the elegant caramel-skinned Italian sunbathers. For the first few months”
Roisin Meaney, The Last Week of May
