I was born in 1970, (I'll wait while you do the math, lol) I'm Canadian, a bit of a patriot, and I live in a small town North of Toronto, Ontario. I have a hard-working husband, two children, and a black, medium-haired cat who thinks I'm his pet.

My addictive personality is appeased by coffee, cheese, chocolate, books, music, the internet...and nicotine which I'm trying to give up.

I have an ongoing love affair with semi-colons, commas and ellipses. Punctuation, self-doubt and moths are my personal nemeses. People have called me an encyclopedia of useless information and I talk...Way.Too.Much.

I have a few tricks to get through writer's block.
Often, music is the key. If I'm having trouble getting a scene to feel right, I'll listen to a few songs that capture the emotion I'm attempting to convey. Once I've set the mood for myself, the words usually fall into place.
If music doesn't work, I'll try the opposite. Living in a small, rural town means that complete silence is out of the question, but that's actually better. I find a quiet spot, close my eyes and focus on my other senses. When I open my eyes I try to describe the sounds and scents I noted, then add more visual details of the place I'm in. Sometimes the results of that exercise make for excellent descriptive scenes. Even if the results aren't useful for the piece I'm working on, the exercise reminds me that there is more to writing than just the visual elements of a story.
I have more tricks and exercises, but in the name of brevity, I'll stop there. ;)(less)

We get to create worlds, people, events...) I think the very best thing, though, is that moment when someone reads something I wrote, that touches them in a deep and meaningful way. Having a reader contact me to say, "You said exactly what I feel." or "I know I'm not alone." My favourite writers do that for me, and now I have the chance to pay it forward. That is definitely the best. (less)

"Hallloooooo? Anybody around?"
I wouldn't be at all surprised if everyone has abandoned me by now. I haven't exactly been a good blogger, have I? Well, I do have a few excuses handy for that. Summer and Fall of 2014 were rather busy for me, and Winter has been a bit of a scramble so far. With the passing of the year, though, I'm finally getting t Read more of this blog post »

“The best part of books was that, at the end, everything made sense. No matter what happened in between the front and back covers, you always knew that someone, somewhere, had planned it all out, and everything had a reason. It was so much better than real life, where things happened all the time without any reason at all.”

“Many people hear voices when no one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.”
Margaret Chittenden

“My youngest brother had a wonderful schtick from some time in high school, through to graduating medicine. He had a card in his wallet that read, ‘If I am found with amnesia, please give me the following books to read …’ And it listed half a dozen books where he longed to recapture that first glorious sense of needing to find out ‘what happens next’ … the feeling that keeps you up half the night. The feeling that comes before the plot’s been learned.”
Guy Gavriel Kay
