The Valleys in Between

Dear Friend:

It’s cold here this morning but the ice has yet to seize the fountain outside my window. A river otter and two raccoons were in and out of it this morning.

It’s been some time since I’ve published a novel, and there are several reasons for that. I’ve been a busy carpenter here at this old island house where I escaped several years ago to write. A landscaper, too. And a keeper of the forest and its owls and rabbits and toads. I’m also the proud adopted father of an elderly Maine Coon cat and an ever-growing mob of black-tailed deer. But I have been writing. And now it’s time to try something new.

Welcome to my Substack publication. Here I’ll share my experiences of writing life on the island. I’ll also be publishing new work in serialized form, emailed directly to you. I’m hoping to send out one full chapter a week or so, to paid subscribers, beginning early next year. In short, you’ll get the opportunity to read a new novel as it’s finished, before it’s published and offered to the public for sale. I’m grateful that you’re here, and I wish you a very Merry Christmas.

And now I’m off to stoke the fire and disappear into a tub of good morning oatmeal.

Signed,

Your Friend Ryan.

Hello Friends!

I have nothing to sell you today, and nothing yet to announce. I write only to add my voice to the choir of spring colors that celebrate the fact that you exist. You, my friends and readers, have been a blessing to me beyond anything I dared to even hope for in those early days passed in countless coffee shops penning Trevor’s tale in South of Bixby Bridge.

Some of you have asked what I’ve been up to, and when you can expect a new novel. In answer all I can say is I’ve been enjoying the heck out of life—riding rainbows and tickling horses on this island, watching every sunset and wishing for all of you the same sense of peace and comfort that has been visited here on me. There’s a certain kind of light that hangs in the cool evening air here, and I’ll admit its beauty has arrested my attention, and with it my pen. But at last, I have harpooned the great whale of a muse and I’m holding on for the ride as I dive deep into my latest work. You’ll be the first to know when I surface with more to share.

My apologies if you’re one of the many who’ve been neglected by me in responding to your correspondence. I’ll try to save enough of my writing hand to soon get to signing all those books and cards I’ve yet to send. I’m afraid due to a server snafu, many of your messages failed to reach me or were deleted before I could respond. In the future you can get word to me at emailryanwinfield@gmail.com (“email” being part of the address and not a verb) or the old fashioned way by addressing your inquiries to P.O. Box 4252, Seattle, WA 98194.

Wishing you all the best!

In Gratitude,

Ryan Winfield.

New Novel Announcement

Dear Friend,

I wanted to be the first to tell you about my upcoming release from Atria Books. Falling For June is a stand-alone love story, and possibly my proudest literary accomplishment to date. Researching and writing this novel sent me and my trusty notebook halfway across the globe, including jumping out of airplanes in Spain, only to return home again to find my story's ending waiting for me in a hidden mountain glen. Never before has writing a book moved me more; I hope reading it is just as moving for you.

Sincerely,
Ryan Winfield.

New Book Announement

Jane’s Story . . .

Dear Friends,

I received messages from many of you after you had read JANE’S MELODY, saying that you were not ready yet to say goodbye to Jane and to Caleb in that little Austin apartment. The truth is I wasn’t either.

Writing is an immersive process for me. I had walked every step of Jane’s journey in this first book. I had smelled the grass in the cemetery, seen the Seattle skyline at sunset from a ferry deck, and found someone I was searching for on an old Pioneer Square bench. But I feared that Jane’s new life in Austin would remain a mystery to me as long as my experience there remained that of a visitor. So I packed a bag and rented an apartment and moved to Austin to find her. And even though I had to walk the soles off of two pairs of shoes to do it, find her I did.

My apartment was above a bar and the bar hosted live music until two in the morning every night of the week, making it nearly impossible to sleep anywhere except on the floor of a back closet with a pillow and blanket like some refugee from the streets. There were a few nights where I surrendered to the music’s calling, leading to an injurious episode with a mechanical bull and another with a runaway pedicab driver looking for his teeth. But I’ll save those to share with you another time. What’s important here is that each morning when I woke, Jane and Caleb were there waiting to tell me their story. A love story. I wrote it down as best I could, and if you read it when it’s released, I pray it brings you as much joy and as much peace as it has brought to them and to me.

I hope you enjoy the continuation of Jane's story with JANE’S HARMONY. There are pre-sale links from my publisher below.

Sincerely,
Ryan Winfield.

P.S. - If you would be so kind as to do me a small favor when you do read JANE'S HARMONY, please say hello to Jane and Caleb for me. I miss them again already.

Ryan Winfield Announces three book deal with Atria Publishing Group

description

Big Announcement

Dear Friends,

You’ve all heard of the boy who was raised by wolves. Well, this boy was raised by books, and many of those books had the Simon & Schuster imprint on the title page as a welcome sign to the worlds of wonder that waited beyond. So, you can imagine it’s a huge day for me to be able to announce my new partnership with Atria Books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. Atria is now the proud publisher of Jane’s Melody: A Novel, as well two other titles to be released in 2014.

I’m celebrating by giving away a Kindle Fire and signed books – ENTER HERE.

Now, I know many of you are wondering about my next book. All I can tell you right now is that I’m heading down to Austin for the entire month of December. You can probably guess who I hope to find there and I’ll be sure to keep you updated on my progress. In the meantime, if you read on Kindle and like surprises, please pre-order my untitled May release HERE.

And now the important part…

I need to thank my amazing agent, Allison Hunter with InkWell Management, as well as my new editor, Sarah Cantin with Atria Books, for working tirelessly to make this deal happen. But mostly, I need to thank you! The publishers saw in JANE’S MELODY what many of you had already seen, and without your continued support of my work and your passionate efforts to spread the news, none of this would have been possible.

There are just three more things I would like you to do:

1. Help me spread the news and enter to win a Kindle Fire by clicking HERE.
2. Share this blog post with your friends who enjoy reading.
3. Please purchase the newly edited Atria edition of JANE'S MELODY at one of the buy links below.
