The C Programming Language

This book is meant to help the reader learn how to program in C. It is the definitive reference guide, now in a second edition. Although the first edition was written in 1978, it continues to be a worldwide best-seller. This second edition brings the classic original up to date to include the ANSI standard.

From the Preface:
We have tried to retain the brevity of the first edition. C is not a big language, and it is not well served by a big book. We have improved the exposition of critical features, such as pointers, that are central to C programming. We have refined the original examples, and have added new examples in several chapters. For instance, the treatment of complicated declarations is augmented by programs that convert declarations into words and vice versa. As before, all examples have been tested directly from the text, which is in machine-readable form.

As we said in the first preface to the first edition, C "wears well as one's experience with it grows." With a decade more experience, we still feel that way. We hope that this book will help you to learn C and use it well.

Brian Wilson Kernighan is a computer scientist who worked at Bell Labs alongside Unix creators Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie and contributed greatly to Unix and its school of thought.

Đây là cuốn sách về lập trình đầu tiên mình đọc lại hai lần. Cuốn này tuy là một cuốn thuộc hàng classics khi học ngôn ngữ C, tuy nhiên nó k phải là một cuốn sách theo dạng tutorial for newcomers:

"The book is not an introductory programming manual; it assumes some familiarity with basic programming concepts like variables, assignment statements, loops, and functions."

Cuốn sách không dày về số trang, nhưng đã trình bày rất cô đọng và đầy đủ những gì bạn cần biết về ngôn ngữ lập trình C(Fact: Dennis Ritchie, một trong hai tác giả của cuốn này là người tạo ra ngôn ngữ C. Điều này có nghĩa rằng bạn không phải lo lắng liệu tác giả có hiểu ngôn ngữ này không, có thiếu phần nội dung gì không. "C is not a big language, and it is not well served by a big book." - Preface)

Mình đọc cuốn này theo cách như sau: đọc lý thuyết trước, sau đó bắt tay vào giải bài tập. Nội dung lý thuyết được trình bày rất cô đọng, đi kèm là các ví dụ để minh họa cho lý thuyết. Các ví dụ này thường được viết một cách rất "ngắn gọn"(điều này là một trở ngại lớn cho những tay mơ như mình); tuy nhiên do vậy nên code rất clean, chỉ cần chịu khó đọc kĩ thì sẽ hiểu tác giả định nói gì. Các bài tập có yêu cầu rất mở, solutions tùy thuộc vào mức độ hiểu ngôn ngữ và khả năng code của bạn. Đây là một điểm mình rất thích vì có thể mỗi lần làm thì code có thể sẽ khác nhau. Đối với mình thì có một số bài ở tầm dễ, chủ yếu ở tầm trung bình và cao hơn(trải nghiệm giải bài tập trong sách thực sự rất là painful :'(). Nếu để chọn ra phần mình thích nhất thì là con trỏ(pointer). Phần này sách viết rất clean và đề cập tới nhiều vấn đề rất hay(về xử lý chuỗi, command line).
