Malcolm Timothy Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, author, and public speaker. He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. He has published seven books. He is also the host of the podcast Revisionist History and co-founder of the podcast company Pushkin Industries.
Gladwell's writings often deal with the unexpected implications of research in the social sciences, such as sociology and psychology, and make frequent and extended use of academic work. Gladwell was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2011.

ชอบในหลายส่วน ชอบทั้งตอนที่บอกว่าข้อมูลที่มากเกินไปไม่ได้ช่วยให้การตัดสินใจดีขึ้น และตอนที่อธิบายว่าทำไมช่วงเวลาคับขันเราตึงเห็นอะไรๆ ช้าลง ดีใจที่ได้อ่าน

อ่านแกลดเวลล์เล่มแรก ตัวอย่างเยอะดี แต่ไม่ค่อยอินกับประเด็นของเรื่องเท่าไหร่ คือสรุปแล้ว การตัดสินใจโดยสัญชาติญาณนี่เข้าท่าพอ ๆ กับการตัดสินใจผ่านการศึกษาอย่างถี่ถ้วนเหรอวะ โอเค มีหลายครั้งที่เราเชื่อลางสังหรณ์ แต่ในชีวิตจริง ลางสังหรณ์เราพลาดกันกี่ครั้งต่อกี่ครั้ง เมื่อเทียบกับสังหรณ์ที่ประสบความสำเร็จ โอเค ถ้าสังหรณ์มันฝึกฝนและควบคุมได้ การตัดสินใจตามจิตไร้สำนึกภายในไม่กี่วินาทีเป็นสิ่งที่ฝึกฝนกันได้ มันก็น่าจะเป็นเรื่องของประสบการณ์และการใช้เวลากับมัน นานกว่า 2-3 วินาทีที่ว่าไม่ใช่เหรอ? ไม่นับว่าหลายตัวอย่างทางจิตวิทยาก็เต็มไปด้วยข้อโต้แย้งมากมายอยู่แล้วด้วย ไม่ค่อยเก็ทว่ามันฮิตอะไรขนาดนั้นได้ยังไง แต่จะลองไปหาเล่มอื่นอ่านต่อ

Blink หรือชื่อไทยที่เวิ่นเว้อมากว่า 'คิดให้น้อยลง แล้วจะเห็นได้ลึกกว่า' พร้อมด้วยคำโปรย 'คุณจะมีมุมมองที่เฉียบคมที่สุดเมื่อทิ้งเหตุผลไปอย่างน้องครึ่งหนึ่ง' คือหนังสือเล่มแรกที่ผมอ่านจบในปีนี้ อ่านค้างมาตั้งแต่ช่วงวันสิ้นปี

ไม่อยากรีวิวหรือแนะนำอะไรมาก เพราะไม่ค่อยปลื้มเท่าไหร่ จะว่าไปงานของมัลคอม แกลดเวล ก็มาแนวนี้ตลอด คือดูเหมือนจะมีประเด็นน่าสนใจ แต่เขียนไปเขียนมา ก็มีอะไรที่ขัดแย้งกันเอง และไม่ค่อยมีเอกภาพในเนื้อหา การนำเสนอด้วยเรื่องราวกรณีศึกษาต่างๆ แม้จะดูน่าสนใจ แต่ก็จับเรื่องนั้นมาผสมเรื่องนี้เยอะไปหน่อย มีเกร็ดเล็กเกร็ดน้อยมากมายไปหมด ตัดสลับไปมาจนน่าเวียนหัว

ไม่อยากบ่นเลย (แต่บ่นไปเยอะแล้ว) มาที่เนื้อหาบ้างดีกว่า ที่จริงประเด็นที่หนังสือนำเสนอก็น่าสนใจนะครับ เพียงแต่แนวทางในการนำเสนอและข้อสรุปมันไม่ได้พาเราให้เข้าใจอะไรมากขึ้นเท่าไหร่

สรุปเลยก็คือ หนังสือเสนอว่า มีการรับรู้บางอย่างที่อธิบายไม่ได้ด้วยเหตุผล เป็นการทำงานของจิตไร้สำนึก บางครั้งเราก็ควรเชื่อมัน เพราะมันทำให้เราเข้าใจสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นได้ดีกว่าการคิดใคร่ครวญ แต่บางครั้งเราก็ไม่ควรด่วนที่จะเชื่อมัน เพราะมันอาจทำให้เราเข้าใจสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นผิดพลาด

คำถามคือ แล้วตอนไหนควรเชื่อหรือไม่ควรเชื่อ?

คำตอบคือ ใช้วิจารณญาณเอาเองครับ เพราะในหนังสือสองร้อยกว่าหน้า คุณแกลดเวลก็ไม่ได้ให้คำตอบไว้ชัดเจน

ส่วนที่ผมชอบที่สุดในหนังสือ คือส่วนที่ผู้เขียนไปคุยกับพอล เอ็กแมน นักจิตวิทยาชื่อดัง ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเรื่อง Micro Expression หรือการแสดงออกทางสีหน้าที่เกิดขึ้นเพียงชั่วขณะ แต่ประเด็นที่น่าสนใจนี้ก็ไม่ค่อยจะเกี่ยวอะไรกับประเด็นหลักของหนังสือเท่าไหร่

คำแนะนำของผมคือ เป็นหนังสือที่อ่านได้เพลินๆ เหมาะกับการอ่านฆ่าเวลาระหว่างเดินทางหรือเข้าห้องน้ำ ไม่ต้องใช้สมาธิในการอ่านมาก

ปล. คนคิดคำโปรยทั้งปกหน้าและปกหลังของหนังสือ ควรจะอ่านหนังสือจริงๆ จังๆ ด้วยนะครับ มันเกินจริงและทำให้เข้าใจเนื้อหาคลาดเคลื่อนไปมากทีเดียว
