The year is 1942, and World War II is in full swing. Odette Sansom decides to follow in her war hero father’s footsteps by becoming an SOE agent to aid Britain and her beloved homeland, France. They are sent to Paris’s Fresnes prison, and from there to concentration camps in Germany where they are starved, beaten, and tortured. But in the face of despair, they never give up hope, their love for each other, or the whereabouts of their colleagues.

O livro é interessante narrando as proezas de Odette Sansom durante a II GG.
Nascida em França, foi nova para Inglaterra, onde casou e teve 3 filhas.
Com o início da guerra o marido foi mobilizado e Odette acabou por se oferecer para ser enviada para França ao serviço das operações especiais.
Larry Loftis narra as aventuras desta mulher, dura de roer, incluindo os tempos em que esteve presa pelos alemães.
Acabada a narrativa, Loftis acrescenta um Apêndice, que mostra que, afinal, a história de Odette é contestada por algumas franjas dos ingleses.
Tendo ela recebido as mais altas condecorações inglesas e francesas a sua vida foi posta em causa.
Ela ainda era casada, mas separada, quando se envolveu com Peter Churchill, o seu capitão no terreno.
A Inglaterra mais conservadora não aceitou que uma mulher que tinha um amante tenho recebido honras tão grandes.
Durante a leitura senti que algumas coisas foram omitidas e que, por vezes, ela se safou por entre os pingos da chuva.

Eu digo que não gosto de ler livros sobre guerras, nem tampouco não-ficção, mas parece que eles me perseguem. Não resisto a uma leitura sobre grandes mulheres, em especial mulheres que tiveram papeis fundamentais em situações adversas, nas quais costumam ser vistas como frágeis e incapazes de certas ações. A história de Odette é absolutamente fascinante, como também é fascinante o papel que muitas mulheres exerceram durante esta e outras guerras. Muito bom este livro.
