Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea

Famously referred to as one of the "Axis of Evil" countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortress-like country. While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this graphic novel.

Guy Delisle was born in Quebec City in 1966 and has spent the last decade living and working in the South of France with his wife and son. Delisle has spent ten years, mostly in Europe, working in animation, an experience that taught him about movement and drawing. He is now currently focusing on his cartooning. Delisle has written and drawn six graphic novels, including "Pyongyang," his first graphic novel in English.

About the author

Born in Quebec, Canada, Guy Delisle studied animation at Sheridan College. Delisle has worked for numerous animation studios around the world, including CinéGroupe in Montreal.

Drawing from his experience at animation studios in China and North Korea, Delisle's graphic novels Shenzen and Pyongyang depict these two countries from a Westerner's perspective. A third graphic novel, Chroniques Birmanes, recounts his time spent in Myanmar with his wife, a Médecins Sans Frontières administrator.

Juokingi ir egzotifikuojantys autoriaus įspūdžiai iš Šiaurės Korėjos.

Pykstu, kai kas nors egzotifikuoja mane pagal "Rytų Europos" stereotipą, bet tuo pat metu kartais truputį gaila, kad egzotifikuoti kitus žmones ar kultūras laikoma blogu tonu – taip, suprantu, kad negražu, bet faina įsivaizduoti, kad kažkur gyvena keisti žmonės su keistais papročiais! Bet gal Šiaurės Korėją galima egzotifikuoti? Atrodo, visi sutinkam, kad tai yra keista šalis? Na, žodžiu, šios knygos pasakojimo tonas kelia kažkokį moralinį klausimą, kuris gali sugadinti arba pagerinti įspūdį.

Man tai patiko, kad negraudenama, o pastebima daug keistenybių, pvz apie "Senojo Kim" ir "Jaunojo Kim" portretus, kurie kabo visose patalpose, išskyrus tualetus:

My coffee breaks lead to a few more observations.
The portraits, which are hung high on the walls, have a wider edge above than below.
The angle cuts out any reflections that could prevent you from contemplating the Sun of 21th century and his venerable father. It also intensifies the gaze in this face-to-face encounter. <...>
Both wear one of the official badges that invariably depict Kim Junior or Kim Senior. You can't tell from the portraits, but it's tempting to think they're wearing each other's images, creating the kind of short circuit animators love...

Ko, manau, knygoje nereikėjo, tai visiškai perteklinio sluoksnio apie Orwellą, na, bet jo daug ir nebuvo.

Kažkada apie šiaurės korėją labai patiko, o dabar net ir perskaičius šį komiksą toks labiau meh.. Bandyta pavaizduoti propagandą ir kaip išbrainwashinti korėjiečiai, kurie tiki kad jie laimingiausi žmonės gimę pasaulyje. Kažkaip šįkart tokio įdomumo nebuvo, galbūt todėl, kad tokie faktai nelabai šokiruoja, kaip ir įprasti apie šią labiausiai izoliuotą šalį pasaulyje.

Paviršutiniški dialogai ir pastangos parodyti gražiausias savo puses – pirmam pasimatymui būdingos realijos. Panašų efektą sukelia grafinė novelė apie parodomąją Šiaurės Korėjos sostinę Pchenjaną. Todėl su šalimi nesusipažinusiems (arba pažįstamiems tik iš atominių antraščių, o gal nuotraukų, kuriose brangus lyderis žiūri į dalykus: kimjongunlookingatthings.tumblr.com), knyga turėtų suveikti, kaip kabliukas. O tuomet linkiu susižvejoti šias dvi puikias (ir kraupias) publicistines istorijas: B. Demick „Neturime ko pavydėti: Šiaurės Korėjos kasdienybė“ ir B. Harden „Pabėgimas iš lagerio Nr. 14“.
