Viena iš ankstesniųjų detektyvo karalienės knygų. Ir jokio belgo užriestais ūsiukais. Čia turim kitą personažą, kuris irgi keliose knygose griežia pirmuoju smuiku – superintendentą Battle. Nors ne, meluoju. Tarsi turėtų, bet iš tikrųjų atsisėdo į antrojo smuiko vietą, kukliai užleisdamas vietą kitam personažui.
Tas kitas – Anthony Cade, toks vėtytas ir mėtytas jaunuolis. Sutinkame jį Afrikoje, kur bičiulis įkalba Anthony imtis užduoties. Net dvigubos – nugabenti velionio vienos (išgalvotos, bet tai ne esmė) Balkanų šalies politiko memuarus Londono leidėjams, o tuo pačiu dar ir gražinti šantažuojamai damai šantažo objektą – jos meilės laiškus. Ir, žinoma, vos tik apsiėmęs to darbo, kaip mat patenka į mįslingų įvykių sūkurį.
Knyga savo esme toks labiau trileris, nei detektyvas. Bet ir detektyvinė linija pakankamai tvirtai į visa tai įpinta. Yra toks kvapelis to laikmečio (trečiasis XX a. dešimtmetis) tokios beveik bulvarinės literatūros. Bet gal tai net savotiškai žavu.
Trys iš penkių. Christie tikrai turi stipresnių kūrinių. Bet noro pasižiūrėti, ar ir toliau tas superintendentas slapstysis kitų herojų šešėlyje, neatmušė.

Britocentristiškas pasakojimas - žmogžudystė prieš pusryčius labai nemalonu, nes svarbiausia - savi interesai ir pinigai. Net jeigu nužudytasis - bele kokio svarbumo žmogus - rasim kitą. Apie ką? Apie tai, kad nereikšmingu atrodęs vaikinas paaiškėja esąs riteris ant balto žirgo. Ir dar šį tą atskleidžia. Ir šį tą randa. Ir net žino - britiškai - kad svarbiausia yra pareiga. Ir viskas vyksta smagiai ir elegantiškai, žavių asmenų apsuptyje. Kaip filme.

Trys žvaigždės, nes pagrindinio herojaus evoliucija man nepatiko, o jis turėjo tikrai didelį potencialą. Kai kurie charakteriai trafaretiniai, ir apskritai - jų per daug.
Vis dėlto rašo A. Kristi fantastiškai gerai - retai jaučiu poreikį perskaityti knygą vienu prisėdimu, o šiuo atveju taip ir nutiko: buvo sunku atsitraukti. Talentas yra talentas.

Pirmą kartą manęs nesužavėjo Agatha Christie knyga. Ji man buvo kažkokia.. netokia. Intriga tęsėsi lygioj vietoj, daug veiksmo linijų, kurios kažkaip vat ima ir susipina tarpusavyje, nors kaip ir nesusiję. Tiesiog šį kartą ne man skirta knyga buvo.
