322 books9,656 followersI'm Al, I used to be a space scientist, and now I'm a writer, although for a time the two careers ran in parallel. I started off publishing short stories in the British SF magazine Interzone in the early 90s, then eventually branched into novels. I write about a novel a year and try to write a few short stories as well. Some of my books and stories are set in a consistent future named after Revelation Space, the first novel, but I've done a lot of other things as well and I like to keep things fresh between books.
I was born in Wales, but raised in Cornwall, and then spent time in the north of England and Scotland. I moved to the Netherlands to continue my science career and stayed there for a very long time, before eventually returning to Wales.
In my spare time I am a very keen runner, and I also enjoying hill-walking, birdwatching, horse-riding, guitar and model-making. I also dabble with paints now and then. I met my wife in the Netherlands through a mutual interest in climbing and we married back in Wales. We live surrounded by hills, woods and wildlife, and not too much excitement.

Questa trilogia è una continua scoperta, una fonte vulcanica di idee brillanti.
Un ineluttabile destino attende l' umanità del XXVII secolo e la fuga è l'unica soluzione. Un nemico che sembra non avere debolezze mette alla prova la natura umana, dove pochi devono decidere per molti e prendere scelte difficili.
Un romanzo diviso in tre linee temporali più una quarta per il prologo e l'epilogo. Raynolds si prende tutto il tempo necessario per collegare le trame, forse anche troppo e tende a ripete più volte i concetti più ostici, ma forse è necessario data la natura altamente scientifica dei temi trattati non semplici da metabolizzare. Un mosaico ben studiato e ben raccontato dove la storia è fondamentale e i personaggi ne sono partecipi.
A volte si fatica nella lettura ma si viene ripagati da trovate narrative di alto livello che pochi autori di fantascienza sono in grado di gestire. Ammetto che alcune soluzioni sono un po' tirate ma non tolgono qualità al romanzo.
Ci sono romanzi da ombrellone e quelli che richiedono un po' di sforzo, questa trilogia rientra prepotentemente nel secondo tipo.

A novel divided into three timelines plus an additional one for the prologue and epilogue. Raynolds takes all the time necessary to connect the plots, perhaps even too much and tends to repeat the most difficult concepts several times, but perhaps it is necessary given the highly scientific nature of the themes treated which are not easy to metabolize. A well-studied and well-told mosaic where the story is fundamental and the characters are involved in it.
Sometimes it is difficult to read but you are rewarded by high-level ideas that few science fiction authors are able to manage. I admit that some solutions are a bit forced but they do not preclude the overall quality.
There are novels to be read on the beach and those that require a bit of effort, this trilogy falls purposefully into the second type.

Un libro da gustare con concentrazione. Non è leggero, è lungo e ha molto contenuto: ci sono più piani temporali e più storie che si intrecciano. Comunque, alla fine è stato un piacere leggerlo e mi ha coinvolto parecchio. Una certa delusione l'ho avuta nella conclusione. L'ho trovata troppo affrettata - dopo un crescendo ben congeniato - e nemmeno molto chiara. Dopo quasi 700 pagine, Reynolds poteva essere un pò più chiaro e spiegare meglio tanti punti rimasti in sospeso. Il mio, giudizio è abbondantemente positivo e spero di trovare qualche ulteriore chiarimento in Inhibitor Phase.

Concludo con questo ultimo romanzo la trilogia degli Inibitori di Alastair Reynolds.
Che dire: spettacolare, complessa, avvincente, universo narrativo maestoso con personaggi indimenticabili.
Bellissima New Space Opera. Consigliatissima agli amanti del genere e della SF in generale.

Finisce una saga bellissima, lasciando l'amaro in bocca per un finale che sembra buttato lì di fretta. Rispetto alla mole dell'intero ciclo, riservare meno di dieci pagine per finirlo con l'introduzione di nuove informazioni fondamentali, pochissimo spiegate, mi ha lasciato un po' deluso.

Assolto?
Volume che conclude l'epopea cominciata con "Rivelazione" e che affronta tematiche esplicitate nel titolo. Di carne al fuoco ce n'è molta, cucinata su più piani temporali e gustosa, ma...
Le idee ci sono - anche se qui, a mio avviso, l'autore strizza l'occhio al Simmons di Hyperion -, ma come nel precedente volume, Reynolds insiste spesso — troppo — con il non dire mai quello che succede durante gli eventi della sua narrazione, lasciando comunque il compito di riassumere a qualche personaggio nei passaggi successivi.
Il suo è un tell don't show che non premia il lettore: non lo sorprende in 'tempo reale' poiché non mostra, e lo priva dell'intuizione perché poi spiega. Cornuto e mazziato.
Scegliendo di seguire solo una delle due strade avrebbe raccolto molto di più, almeno con me.
In conclusione, questo di Rivelazione è un Ciclo interessante, non certo una lettura 'da spiaggia', per capirci, e per il sottoscritto, in termini di leggibilità, raccoglie meno di quanto seminato.
Leggerò altro dell'autore; per me assolto.

Romanzo lungo e avvincente, in teoria va a chiudere la saga della Nostalgia Dell'Infinito e del suo variegato e mutevole equipaggio.
La lettura è scorrevole e devo dire che facevo fatica a metter giù il libro anche solo per mangiare, la storia è ben imbastita e condotta, tranne un paio di punti che mi hanno lasciato, come dire, con un senso di "così non va bene". In particolare mi riferisco ai "Nidificatori" e alla loro gratuita apparizione, quasi deja vù.
Spero che Reynolds torni in futuro sull'argomento e approfondisca e chiarisca.
