Das Boot #1

Das Boot

Alternate cover edition of ISBN 9780304352319

The thrilling wartime novel that inspired Wolfgang Petersen's Academy Award-nominated, blockbuster film! Written by an actual survivor of Germany's U-boat fleet, Das Boot is one of the most exciting stories of naval warfare ever published, a tale filled with almost unbearable tension and suspense. In autumn 1941, a German U-boat commander and his crew set out on yet another hazardous patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic. Over the coming weeks they brave the ocean's stormy waters and seek out British supply ships to destroy. But their targets travel in well-guarded convoys. When contact finally occurs, the hunter quickly becomes the hunted, and a cat-and-mouse game begins as the U-boat hides deep beneath the surface of the sea. Soon, claustrophobia becomes an enemy almost as frightening as the depth charges exploding around them.

Das Boot was an experience, like truly sailing through endless wastelands of sea and darkness. It is a great, long adventure, and it hits the mark precisely because the narrator is a "guest" on board, someone who is never quite sure of what's about to happen. There is surprise, fear, and a thousand questions. The novel is presented as the main character’s logbook, which eventually turns into a meticulous record of his innermost thoughts.

I had already seen the movie adaptation (by Wolfgang Petersen), which is an excellent representation. Compared to the movie, I'd say the novel feels a bit more "accurate" - certain passages are more detailed and make much more sense, the Commander gives the impression of always having everything under control, and above all, entire sections of the book are completely different or absent from the movie, and vice versa. Overall, however, the core story remains the same, and the emotional impact is powerful and impressive in both works.

However, I didn't appreciate that towards the second half of the book, the author-protagonist becomes... extremely prolix. It was really tough to push through that section, not just because of the somewhat excessive repetition of his thoughts, fears, and doubts during dangerous situations, but especially because of the jarring presence of completely disconnected and off-topic "memories" that added nothing to the plot. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for this excessiveness.

Overall tho, it's a book that I really appreciated. It truly managed to make me feel lost among the treacherous waves, facing a dangerous adventure. Das Boot is a reportage of incredibly harsh times that tells an undeniably tragic story, yet it beautifully showcases the tenacity of characters who, despite everything, never give up.
