Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore (In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends

Rate this book
Fandom: The Avengers
Relationships: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson
--------------------------------------------------
Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick.

And some things shouldn't be a chore.

I love this story so much. It's such an amazing blend of humor, and heart that I couldn't resist. I have such a weak spot for the Avengers as family. I love how they are learning about each other, and how much each of them need each other. No sex, or smut, but it's building that way. A great start to one of my favorite new series.

HILARIOUS and FEEL GOOD!

Another funny one!

Okay, this is my first foray to M/M Avengers fan fiction. And this one, Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Steve Rogers (Captain America) is the main couple.

I like the writing. I can compare Tony's voice to Stiles. They are both hell crazy! And Steve is just adorbs.

The rest of the Avengers appear here as well. And their scenes together are very funny and silly.

I kinda like that this was very wholesome. There's no sex in this. (Sorry for those who want smexy nekkid hot superhero lovin') But! Tony and Steve's affection to each other was so sweet, it almost brought me to near tears. That part on the Chapter 4 was unexpected. Man, the author can write!

And I'm not gonna look at this thing the same way again.

A FEEL GOOD AVENGERS FANFIC! A great starter for those who wanna try this.

Epic. In the best, overused, sense of the word meaning awesome. Not in the endless old poetry sense.

Any book that makes me laugh out loud several times deserves 5 stars. I will never look at toasters and roombas the same way again.

So, as is my habit with stuff I find funny, I will leave you with some quotes.

On the topic of chore charts:

“There was underwear on the table?” Steve said, and the tone had a heavy dose of 'what the hell is wrong with you people?' that he was too polite to put into words. “Who put underwear on the kitchen table?”

“I didn't check it for a name label, Steve,” Tony snapped. “I don't know, and I don't care, I'm just saying that we can do this without having to humiliate ourselves in front of visitors by having a chart on the goddamn wall like we're all wearing shorts and hats that say 'Happy Funtime Fuckitall Camp' on the front.”

“That does not seem like an appropriate name for a place one sends children,” Thor said, disapproval on his face, at the same time that Steve said, “Tony, language, really, there's a lady present.” Natasha looked amused, and Tony lost it.

“It isn't a real place!” Tony all but howled. “It is what you are making my tower into! I do not want to live at 'Happy Funtime Fuckitall Camp,' people. I resent the hell out of this! I pay for a cleaning crew, and I don't leave my boxers on the kitchen table!”

“Oh, not mine, then,” Natasha said, and everyone stopped to stare at her.

“While Tony's brain is rebooting from that,” Coulson said, because Steve was bright red and stammering and Clint was grinning at Natasha in a way that boded poorly for him next time they sparred, and Thor was clearly trying to remember if the boxers in question were his, and Bruce was ignoring them all, “Does anyone else have anything to say before I have a chore chart installed?”

This happens during the debriefing after

“Do you know what the difference between a villain and a super villain is, Stark?” Coulson said, leaning his palms on the tabletop, looming over everything like a very snappily dressed gargoyle.

“Style?” Tony asked, pointing both index fingers in Coulson's direction like the gunslinger that he was. He added a wide grin to the gesture, but Coulson didn't seem to notice.

“A villain has a giant mass of robotic vacuum cleaners that he can sic on his enemies. A super villain gives them the ability to fly.”

“In my defense, I do not actually remember installing repulsor technology in the Roombas,” Tony said, choosing his words carefully. It had been a working theory, sure, but he still wasn't quite sure when he implemented it. Maybe sometime on Tuesday night... That one was a blur. “It was a very long couple of days. So I was as surprised by that as everyone else.”

“Screaming 'fuck, yes, suck it,' over the SHIELD commline made that abundantly clear,” Natasha said, her voice droll.

“That was an appropriate vacuum related pun,” Tony pointed out.

4.5 stars. An excellent Avengers fanfic. The author voices Tony Stark with such authenticity she could easily write 'Iron Man' scripts. In this installment Steve Rogers calls a family meeting where a Kaper chart is introduced so the Avengers team members can clean up after themselves. One of Steve's jobs is to give Tony 'hugs.' Tony creates an AI toaster and intelligent roombas. A pre-slash fic so no sex sadly.

All I have to say is that this was pure awesomeness!

Everything from the chore chart, family meetings, Toaster, the Roombas, the dust bunny, the screams - everything!

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers (Captain America) was never a 'ship I considered boarding.

First, because Tony Stark, while high-larious, is a dick and Steve deserves better. Second, because I really don't ship Steve with anyone. He's too pretty, gorgeous to the point of asexual. I don't even see him in the canon 'ship with Agent Carter.

But...this fan fic had me packing my bags and goin' to sea on the good ship CapTony.

Plotwise, this more slice-of-life than actually...well, plotted. Tony, Cap, Natasha, Clint, Bruce and Thor (and Coulson, I think) are cohabitating in Stark Tower. And things are getting messy. Literally. Somebody left his undies on the kitchen counter and the floor needs mopping and the place is a mess.

Tony's like, "Leave it to housekeeping," but Cap's not having it. Enter the chore chart, which features tasks like sweeping the floor and hugging Tony (Cap's job). And though Tony grumbles, he likes Cap hugs very much.

Things get cray-zee when Tony, being Tony, orders an army of Roombas and mad-sciences the shit out of them.

I'm having a hell of a time getting into most of the original fiction books that I paid cashy-money for. This, however, I stay up late reading the fuck out of this. Don't let the fact that it's fan fiction lead you to assume the writing sucks ass. This story has some of the sharpest, snappiest writing my eyeballs have enjoyed in years. I will probably reread it again and again

Finally got around to reading this and I adored it. Wish I had read it sooner. And it was preslash! Which means there is so much more to look forward to! Yay. I love preslash with finished sequels.

I usually don't rate fanfictions above a four. I don't know why, but in my head if I give a fanfiction a four star rating, it's like giving a book a five star rating. But I liked this so much I'm thinking of trashing that rule and giving this five stars. We shall see.
He was bad at all kinds of responsibility, but he hated bringing that up. Steve got that pinched, unhappy look on his face that Tony never knew how to deal with. Most of the time he either threw something more broken than himself in Steve's path and ran, or just offered to buy the Dodgers again.

“Hey, it's a toaster!”
“What?” Steve asked.
“Nothing, never mind, no problems here, why the hell did I think I needed plutonium isotopes on a toaster, really, even for me, that's overkill, so much more subtle to just go with a more stable electron pulse and the result's the same and no one likes radioactive toast.” He pointed a screwdriver in Steve's direction. “No one.”

He had a very bad feeling that the remainder of his day was going to be spent trying to convince himself that being hugged by Steve wasn't exactly what he wanted to spend the rest of his life doing.

“It's coffee time, Pepper. The most sacred twelve times of the day.”

“There needs to be a basic course at all university level science majors that includes basic advice like, 'So they all said you were mad: turning yourself into a monster will just prove them right, so go get a beer and calm the fuck down,' and 'It's really hard to get grants when you're eating your lab assistants or cackling manically: maybe you should just focus on a different discipline now.'”

“Yeeeeeeees?” Tony asked, one foot hovering, ready to make a break down the stairs, not that the workshop was secure anymore because it was missing a goddamn wall, thanks a lot, Captain America, actually, now that he thought about it, that was kinda hot, and was Coulson still talking?
And to think I use to not ship Stony...

So just when the zaniness started going over the top the the point I was about to be annoyed rather than entertained, the story turned a corner and had me in tears with how beautifully set-up the whole thing had been to get Tony and Steve ready to talk to each other.

I can't remember the last time a story had me both laughing and crying, and it was delightfully fun to experience. Beautiful fic, can't wait to move on to #2!

Some Favorite Quotes:
"Tony, but when you hire people to take care of everything then there's no sense of personal responsibility."
"Yeah, I like that. In that I am so very bad at personal responsibility."

Most of the time he either threw something more broken than himself in Steve's path and ran, or just offered to buy the Dodgers again.

Huh, he'd given it wheels. Why in God's name would he have- Oh. Yeah. Toast delivery.
He needed to stop engineering when sleep-deprived.

"Noooooo," Tony said at last, drawing the word out in the hopes that by the time he finished it, Steve will have forgotten what the question was.

"No! No, Tony, do not explain, because if I start seeing logic in your madness, I will have a nervous breakdown."

"Greetings, friend toaster!" Thor said, and the toaster fled.

It annoyed the hell out of Thor when he couldn't punch something, he took that as a personal affront; bad things were meant to go squish on the blunt force of Thor's fist.

Tony grinned, an unholy, unapologetic, 'suck it, mad scientists, I'm madder and more scientific than you,' grin.

I died of laughter. Oh my. This is my first Steve and Tony fic. I'd avoided Avenger pairings in the past because the only character I actually like is Tony Stark and couldn't see anyone else being able to keep up with his level of awesome. This has made me realize that you don't try to keep up such awesomeness; you just compliment it with earnest sweetheartedness and puppy dog looks of utter sadness.

I don't have the words to adequately express my love for this series. The characters are just so spot on and the author always makes me laugh. When I need a comfort read, this is one of the stories I always go to.

I never put fanfiction on my bookshelf on Goodread (except for FSOG and Wallbanger since they're published novels that just happen to be fanfiction first). I have two account, both on AO3 and ff.net with dedicated space for my favorite fics. This one, however, read like a really good comic book. No, seriously, the heroes are on point, it's action packed AND it's the right amount of ridiculous to make it entirely Marvel-like. I've read all of the fics that are in the series so far, but I'll only mark the first one here. Because it's that good! (This coming from a girl who has approximately 3000 fics bookmarked as read, and there was a time I didn't have a system for my finished fics, so there may be a couple of hundred more than that in total). High 5 to the author!

(I want a Roomba of my own now.)

I'm trying to broaden my fanfic horizons, and I sure am glad I picked this one. The voice is spot-on, and the humor is not too cutesy. I'm not even going to pause before I move on to the next one.

Honestly I have no idea how many times I have read or listened to this story. Maybe about 10 times at this point..?
Anyway, I obviously adore this story. This is how I always wanted the Avengers to be - a true found family. I love their group dynamic and the different relationships between one another. Obviously this story is mostly centered on Steve and Tony. I love how their growing friendship/relationship is at the forefront here.
This story has some touching moments but also lots of humor.
I would recommend this fic to anyone who is an Avengers fan.

This is the sort of story where you wish a lot of it were canon, for the interactions. It's also so hilarious that there was one point I was laughing so hard I was practically crying with it, and had to take a time out because it's impossible to read with your eyes squinched shut. THEN, just when you think that's enough to make you love it, it hits you SO HARD in the feels! (Hint: The title's meaning.)

Now, I have to let you know this first installment is really pre-slash Tony/Steve ("Stony"), but it's clean, and the whole Avengers "family" is at least as important an element.

I'm so glad I got curious about the looong series title in a crosslink on the previous Avengers funny fanfic I shelved and reviewed. I will definitely be continuing with the "Toasterverse" (nicknamed for the quirky AI toaster Tony creates)... right now!

P.S. I'm sure my 2022 reading was (at least) my third, not second, but I posted no comment to give me a middle date for this piece.

P.S.2 Augh, I see my fumble-fingers only-for-2-seconds shelving as "wait for more reviews" is now preserved forever in my reading chronology for this work. *sigh* Why can't we remove such accidents?

5/2025 (or maybe even 4/2025): I'd forgotten this novella was listed on GR, so I didn't mark my re-re-re-read until weeks later. 🤦‍♀️

You wouldn't know that, years ago, this story saved my life. The audio-fic, for years, was the only thing that could get me to sleep. Some people don't see any point in fanfiction, but I've always found more meaning there.
I don't know, I have a lot of feelings, and a lot of those feelings are about Tony Stark and his roomba army of doom, and of found families and nervous breakdowns, and about all of the things that the rest of this series includes.

I listened to the podcast version & I really enjoyed it. Loved the humor & the snark. Really felt the pain & dismay when Tony inadvertently revealed his issue with hugs being on the chore chart. I definitely want to check out more from this writer.
