Aluksi tosi mukaansatempaavaa tarinaa Harvardissa opiskelunsa aloittavista pojista ja heidän ystävyyksistään. Loppua kohden tarina tuntui kääntyvän oudoksi Israel-symppaukseksi, joka jotenkin imi kirjan muusta tarinasta voimaa. Jasonin henkilökohtainen uskonnollinen herääminen liitetään niin voimakkaasti itsenäisyydestä sotimiseen ja epämiellyttäviin sotakuvauksiin (tarkoituksella?), että voisi kuvitella juutalaisuudesta löytyvän lukijaa paljon enemmänkin kiinnostavia näkökulmia. Juutalaisten sorto liitetään voimakkaammin Israelin valtion rajojen puolustamiseen kuin kaikkeen siihen juutalaisten järkyttävään epäinhimilliseen kohteluun, josta lukijalla kuitenkin on jo jonkinlaista tietoa. Tämän tiedon varaan rakentaminen olisi voinut tuoda kirjaan toisenlaista särmää ja tehdä siitä kokonaisuutena ehjemmän.
