Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

وسرعان ما أثار هذا الشخص الغريب ، الذي يعيش بمفرده ويذهب إلى الصيد اهتمامًا واسعًا ، فهو لم يتحدث أبدًا لأحد ، ولم يذهب إلى المدينة مطلقًا ، وكان يمارس كل صباح لمدة ساعة تقريبًا هوايته المفضلة مع مسدسه وبندقيته .

وبُنيت الأساطير من حوله حتى قيل إنه كان شخصًا أرستقراطيًا فارًا من وطنه لأسباب سياسية ، ثم تم التأكيد على أنه كان مختبئًا بعد ارتكابه جريمة بغيضة. ، حتى أنه تم ذكر بعض الأحداث اللفظية عنه .

ثم حول الحديث عن الصيد وأعطاني أكثر تفاصيل غريبة عن صيد فرس النهر ، والنمر والفيل وحتى الغوريلا ، فقلت له : هل كل هذه الحيوانات خطرة ؟ فابتسم وقال : أوه لا الرجل هو الأسوأ ، ثم ضحك ضحكة كبيرة وهو يقول : لقد كنت أيضًا في كثير من الأحيان أصطاد الرجال .

ثم بدأ في الحديث عن الأسلحة ، ودعاني إلى الحضور لرؤية مختلف أنواع الأسلحة التي لديه ، وبالفعل دخلت وشاهدت طائرًا جناحه ملفوف بالحرير الأسود المطرز بالذهب ، وكانت هناك زهور صفراء كبيرة رائعة كالنار ، فقال لي : إنها يابانية ، لكن في وسط تلك اللوحة من الأشياء الغريبة جذب انتباهي شيئًا غريبًا .

لقد برز جسم أسود على مربع من الجرانيت الأحمر ، فصعدت إليه لأشاهد ما هو ! كانت يدًا ، يد بشرية ولم تكن اليد البيضاء النظيفة التي يملكها أي شخص على قيد الحياة ، لقد كانت هيكل عظمي ، على شكل يد سوداء مجففة ، مثبته بمسامير صفراء وكان هناك أثار دم قديمة على العظام ، والتي يبدو كما لو كانت قد قطعت بفأس بالقرب من منتصف الساعد .

لقد اقتربت ولمست هذه البقايا البشرية ، التي كان يجب أن تكون تابعة لعملاق ، فقد كانت الأصابع الطويلة غير المألوفة مرتبطة بالأوتار الهائلة التي كانت لا تزال تحتوي على قطع من الجلد معلقة عليها في بعض الأماكن .

وهنا في بضع شهادات للخادم كان يقول : “لمدة شهر بدا سيده متحمس ولقد تلقى العديد من الرسائل ، والتي كان يطلع عليها على الفور ، وفي كثير من الأحيان في نوبة من العاطفة التي اقتربت من الجنون ، كان قد أخذ مفتاحًا وضرب بشدة هذه اليد المجففة المنثورة إلى الحائط ، والتي اختفت ولا أحد يعرف كيف وفي ساعة الجريمة ذاتها ..

“I like to tell people I have the heart of a small boy, then I tell them it's in a jar on my desk.” The ghastliness and horror of this quote from Robert Bloch, author of Psycho isn’t that far removed, in spirit, from The Hand, a four-page literary jewel written by nineteenth century French author Guy de Maupassant.

A heart in a jar, a hand on a wall, a haunted house at night - what is it that makes horror stories so incredibly compelling, stories once heard make such a deep impression and we can vividly recall scenes and images years later? Perhaps H.P. Lovecraft understood the crux of our predilection for the horrific when he wrote, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.”

And this very short de Maupassant story is all about the unknown; but beyond mere theme, it’s the way the author constructs and crafts his tale of terror - attention and precision and nuance given to every single detail. For example, the setting: a gathering in front of a fireplace where a judge expounds on a much discussed inexplicable, "unnatural" Paris crime. He is surrounded by a group of mostly women, which is appropriate since in the nineteenth century world of de Maupassant women were viewed as more susceptible to hysteria, madness and the callings of the occult.

The conversation prompts the judge to cite another case involving what he terms "the uncanny." Immediately, anticipating something horrible, the women implore the judge to relate the story of the case. The judge obliges and thus we as readers hear this story within a story.

And what a story! First, it’s noteworthy this tale of horror and the supernatural is told by a man who states directly he only believes in rational, natural causes, a man occupying that quintessentially logical and eminently establishmentarian of positions – a judge. Then, among other particulars, the judge conveys how events transpired in Ajaccio, a city of small white buildings and houses by the sea, a city bounded by mountains. Such natural beauty but, as the judge explains, the city suffers from many generations of violent murders and massacres, all in the name of vengeance.

A mysterious Englishman, Sir John Rowell by name, a tall, broad-shouldered man with red hair and red beard takes up residence out at the end of the bay. Many legends circulate about the Englishman’s adventurous and perhaps criminal past and the judge thinks it wise to get to know this larger-than-life stranger. Events occur in a manner to bring the judge to Rowell’s house. When asked, the Englishman tells the judge about hunting hippopotamus, tigers, elephants, gorillas, and even doing some man-hunting.

Then the tale takes a eerie turn when the Englishman invites the judge into his house. The judge sees something shocking. We read: “A black object stood out against a square of red velvet. I went up to it; it was a hand, a human hand. Not the clean white hand of a skeleton, but a dried black hand, with yellow nails, the muscles exposed and traces of old blood on the bones, which were cut off as clean as though it had been chopped off with an axe, near the middle of the forearm. Around the wrist, an enormous iron chain, riveted and soldered to this unclean member, fastened it to the wall by a ring, strong enough to hold an elephant in leash. The uncommonly long fingers were attached by enormous tendons which still had pieces of skin hanging to them in places. This hand was terrible to see; it made one think of some savage vengeance.”

Let’s pause here to reflect on the various levels and meanings associated with such a black hand with yellow nails reminding the judge of “some savage vengeance”. Of course the image of the hand has power simply seen as a hand. Additionally the gruesome black hand could represent such psychological regions as the Freudian unconscious or the Jungian shadow or the dark, untamed forces described in Plato’s Phaedrus.

The contrasting symbolism of the red-haired white Englishman and the dreadful black hand is rich indeed, especially in the twenty-first century when we can look back in retrospect at what is truly ghastly: a wealthy European killing endangered species and other human beings for sport.

The tale then takes a supernatural turn when the Englishman tells the judge the chain is needed since the hand always wants to get away. To find out what happens next you will have to read the story. Once read, this story will live with you for many nights when your imagination can run wild. Such striking images, such graphic happenings, all flowing from the pen of a master storyteller.

Let me conclude by quoting an experience recounted by our rationally-minded judge: "One night, about three months after the crime, I had a terrible nightmare. I seemed to see the horrible hand running over my curtains and walls like an immense scorpion or spider. Three times I awoke, three times I went to sleep again; three times I saw the hideous object galloping round my room and moving its fingers like legs.” The heart of darkness, anyone?

A creepy story that is perfect for this time of year. The judge's nightmare certainly brings home the idea that the supernatural is at work (or play!) and it's bone-chilling to imagine the terrifying encounter of seeing a scuttling hand running amok. But more logical readers will appreciate and support the judge's opinion of a vendetta come to fruition. No matter where your convictions lie, the how and why of this inexplicable crime can certainly be explained in accordance with your tendency.

Pierre shows his friends a flayed severed right hand. Rumour has it that the hand once belonged to an old sorcerer who liked it as it was the hand of a murderer. Will this new acquisition bring any luck to its new owner? If you follow the well composed compelling story you'll soon find out. Really recommended. Great classic with murder, mystery and graveyard scene!

Okaaay! Just love my itty-bitty horror oldies and here's a good one....first published 1875.

Did you know that man is the most dangerous animal? It is in this story.

This version of THE FLAYED HAND is a short 16 minute audible and creepy little tale of murder that mystifies and excites a crowd of listeners who demand to know the true facts of a strange case....listeners with an insatiable desire to hear about the inexplicable....gruesome....and bizarre.

And get this....a great big, dried out and chained blackened hand with ugly yellow nails that surely must have belonged to a giant being is at the heart of the story....a hand that always must get away.

Super fast and dark.

Thanks to my friend Bette, who writes a literary column for a group of which I am part. Her article reminded me of how much I enjoy the clarity of this authors prose, and his stories. I went to Amazon and bought a book for my Kindle that includes his novels and short stories. I started at the beginning and will be dipping in and out of these, now and again. This was the first, and was very short.

Can an unattached hand retain evil, and want revenge? That is the Crux of the story, enjoyable, strange and as I said short.

Then I turned the conversation on hunting, and he gave me the most curious details on hunting the hippopotamus, the tiger, the elephant and even the gorilla.

de Maupassant is the sort of writer who could have written about anything, and written about it well. From Parisian Society, to love and heartbreak, to...er, a hand. Yes, that's right, a hand takes center stage in this ever so short story from a master of the short story. But this hand isn't attached to an arm, thus no longer in the land of the living, it has been severed and keep as a trophy. Only now it wants revenge...or is it the owner of the hand?

The story is told to a gathering of woman by M. Bermutier, a judge, who was giving his opinion about the Saint-Cloud mystery. For a month this in explicable crime had been the talk of Paris.

Nobody could make head or tail of it.

"Oh! Ladies, I shall certainly spoil your terrible dreams. I simply believe that the legitimate owner of the hand was not dead, that he came to get it with his remaining one. But I don't know how. It was a kind of vendetta."

Too short to score any higher, it was all over in a flash, but at least it's eerie feeling made it worth reading.

Es handelt sich um eine unheimliche Kurzgeschichte mit einer Erzählung innerhalb einer Erzählung. Ich finde es wirklich interessant, wie zwei Lösungen als Erklärung angeboten werden, aber sich keine der beiden wirklich absolut stimmig anfühlt. Indem das Unlösbare unterstrichen wird, entsteht eine typisch phantastische Stimmung, die im Text selbst angesprochen wird.

Eine wirklich interessante, mysteriöse und kurze Kriminalgeschichte, aber im Vergleich zu Maupassants 'Der Horla' ist sie deutlich schwächer. Es wirkt etwas als würde er noch mit dem Genre des Phantastischen experimentieren, wenn man es mit dem ein paar Jahre später erschienen Werk 'Der Horla' vergleicht. 'Der Horla' wirkt wesentlich komplexer und ausgereifter.

Eerie short story with a narrative within a narrative. I find it interesting how two solutions are offered as an explanation, but neither of them really feels absolutely coherent. By emphasizing the unresolvable, there's a typically fantastical vibe, which is addressed in the text itself.

Really interesting, mysterious and short crime story, but compared to Maupassant's 'The Horla' it's much weaker. It seems as if he is still experimenting with the genre of the fantastic when you compare it with the work 'The Horla', which appeared a few years later. 'The Horla' seems much more complex and more developed.

Ce qui est fascinant pour moi dans la plupart des contes fantastiques de Guy de Maupassant, c’est que l’auteur arrive souvent à créer une atmosphère troublante et vaguement menaçante en évoquant le surnaturel sans en montrer trop, comme il le fait, par exemple, dans Le Horla.

La Main d’écorché est une œuvre de jeunesse de Maupassant et c’est peut-être pour cela que le récit manque la finesse psychologique que j’associe au nom de cet auteur. Le narrateur nous raconte l’expérience avec son ami Pierre, qui, un jour, fièrement présente son plus récente acquisition : une vieille main noire et sèche coupée d’un criminel du XVIIIe siècle qui a été exécuté pour avoir tué sa femme et un curé et pour d’autres crimes atroces. Pierre expose la main comme un trophée macabre dans son logement, prés de son lit, et le lendemain, le narrateur, en visitant son ami, se trouve sur la scène d’un crime. Car Pierre a juste échappé à la mort ; ayant perdu sa raison, il ne peut plus témoigner de ce qui s’est passé, mais son cou montre des traces de strangulation par, comme l’inspecteur dit, une main maigre. Le conte n’y finit pas, mais je ne veux pas abimer la surprise (s’il y en a une).

J’ai bien l’impression que Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, en écrivant The Brown Hand en 1899, s’est laissé inspirer par ce conte fantastique de Maupassant, et en comparaison avec le récit de Doyle, La Main d’écorché semble vraiment mystérieux. Quand même, il est évident qu’il s’agit d’une des premières œuvres de l’auteur parce qu’il y a des éléments, par exemple les réminiscences du narrateur concernant les mures que lui et Pierre ont mangées quand ils étaient jeunes, qui ne sont pas strictement nécessaires pour l’intrigue et qui révèlent l’écrivain tâchant encore de trouver l’équilibre narratif.

Il se peut que, l’un de ces jours, j’aille lire la nouvelle La Main de Maupassant publiée en 1883 pour voir le développement artistique de cet auteur.

The Hand is a very short horror story that follows a magistrate, Monsieur Bermutier’s strangest investigation, which appeared to have a supernatural connection. He narrates the events around the death of an Englishman, Sir John Rowell, who had just moved into town and owned a “black, withered hand,” severed from the body, hung on his wall like a mantlepiece.

This little short story has some really good imagery. The image of Sir John Rowell hunting men in his expeditions to America, the image of the hand trying to get away even after it is severed, the image of it being kept prisoner even at death – all produce the desired discomfort. To a modern reader, this story does bring up questions about power and pride. This prize possession of Sir Rowell seems a rather gruesome object from which to gain pride in one’s hunting abilities.

The story is extremely short – about 5 pages – and this makes it an easy read.

However, as a horror fan (and a newly initiated Victorian-era-literature fan), I felt this one was a little too simple for me. Perhaps I am too used to seeing layered plots and characters. I also felt that this story left more questions than it answered. And while that made it simple to read, I kept wishing for more complexity. For instance, I wished to see Bermutier get close enough to Rowell that the readers could see his descend into insanity over the fear of the Hand.

This story reminded me of The Monkey's Paw by W.W Jacobs. That one took its time to build the setting and the eerie sense of doom, which I felt missing from The Hand.

This is a strange but fascinating short story of a murder committed by a literal hand (as in the part of the arm that holds the five fingers and the palm!)

I loved Guy de Maupassant's style of narration. Though it is a story of mystery that provides unsatisfactory answers, the story is so well written that the reader is satisfied by this.

Short story that dabbles with the supernatural but requires a lot of imagination to chill the blood - the tale alone won’t do it. Probably didn’t help that I listened to an Audible version where the eccentric delivery and phrasing was rather distracting.

Set in Sardinia, the narrator befriends a solitary Englishman and discovers he has a desiccated hand attached to the wall by a chain. He is told it is the hand of an enemy, and notes that the Englishman has surrounded himself with weaponry. There is of course a tragic and possibly diabolical outcome…

I have read a lot of Maupassant’s short stories over the years and they are well crafted and generally very perceptive, particularly those that deal with bourgeois families and their aspirations. This is a bit of an anomaly and although well written probably won’t stay with me.

I liked how the story makes you think there's something very unusual that concerns this murder but LOGIC wins.
I liked the twist.
