Series: Red Rock Mysteries #14 (must be read in order)
Age recommendation: 9-13
Summary: Bryce and Ashley have both made it to the state tournament for forensics. When they arrive at the school where the competition is taking place, they learn that the school’s best actress, Vanessa, is missing. Can the twins find the missing actress before her important audition?
My thoughts: Lynette is such a pain. And the fact the Bryce is mooning over her for half the book is also annoying. It’s gross; she’s mean, so why does he have to be in love with her and keep describing how pretty he thinks she is?! I love Marion Quidley in this book. Yes, she’s still super weird and awkward and has a crush on Bryce that he doesn’t return, but she’s really smart and sweet and the fact that she wants to learn more about God and Christianity is really exciting. I really like her speeches as well; it was really interesting to read what she had to say. I don’t like how sometimes the Christian content is downplayed/almost joked about, like when Dylan asks how to get Jesus in his heart and then asks if he can get his favourite movie character in his heart too, so Jesus won’t be lonely. To be fair, I could picture a young child actually asking that, but I think the comment was a little irreverent and didn’t need to be included. Other than that, I think this book had the most Christian content of any book in this series. Ashley and Bryce get some really good conversations with Marion and Lynette about the Bible. I only wish the gospel had been explained (more clearly). I liked how Bryce and Ashley caught the people responsible for Vanessa’s kidnapping. It was really smart, and I loved the scene where the people realized they’d been caught. It was so funny! The message about forgiveness was really good, although it seemed a little strange that Sam gave that advice. I guess maybe the authors were trying to show that non-Christians can also have good advice and good morals, not just the Christian characters, which is very true. Basically, the thought was that even though it can be hard to forgive sometimes, it’s what God wants us to do and we can bring glory to Him through it.
Bryce and Ashley are among a handful of students chosen to compete in a special tournament at a mountainside college. When Ashley discovers that a student is missing, she and her brother investigate and find that there’s more to the story than first appears. I love these kids and their story. Quality characters with an exciting plot. On to the next one.
